The best things at this table were passed down. Grandma's stuffing recipe. Dad's carving knife. The stories nobody tells quite right anymore. Families are good at passing things down. The question worth asking this month is whether your wealth is built to make the trip. I dig into that idea a bit more in this issue's Money Matters column. Wealth built through patient ownership can become something worth passing down.

In this season of gratitude, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. Thanksgiving encourages us to slow down, embrace the present, and appreciate the people and moments that bring us joy. This month, I’ve been especially grateful for the small, everyday moments that make life beautiful: the laughter of my daughters, evening walks with my husband, and the chance to be part of such a vibrant community here in Sherwood. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of connection, giving back and celebrating the people and organizations that make Tualatin Valley such a special place. We’re endlessly thankful for our advertising partners, whose support allows us to bring inspiring stories to your doorstep each month, and for the readers who make it all worthwhile. As we prepare to gather with loved ones, let’s take a moment to reflect on what truly brings meaning to our lives. This holiday season, may we find contentment not in possessions or accolades but in the connections we nurture and the good we do for others. Wishing you and your family a season of gratitude and grace, M E L I S S A R O S E N B E R R Y, P U B L I S H E R @ T U A L AT I N VA L L E Y C I T Y L I F E S T Y L E

A NSW ER ING THE CALL

Firefighter Sean George

THE TUALATIN VALLEY FIRE AND RESCUE TEAM ARE MORE THAN JUST FIRST RESPONDERS

Firefighters are there when we need them most, responding to emergencies and helping keep our community safe. But at Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue Station 34, serving the community goes far beyond answering calls. It means building relationships, showing up for local events, supporting one another and treating the people they serve like family. Michael Sherman, the station captain for Station 34, has been a firefighter for two decades. He oversees three lieutenants and a team of 15 firefighters at Station 34. Their station is equipped with a hazmat truck for incidents that involve hazardous material, two water tenders that transport large amounts of water to emergency scenes, and one fire engine. The people of Station 34 are more than just firefighters. They have created a family within their unit, watching movies together after dinner, playing games, playing basketball outside, volunteering around the community, cooking meals for one another, and bonding on a deeper level whenever they can. Most firefighters on the team work 24-hour shifts, spending days at the station and responding to about 10 calls per day. When you walk into Station 34 you are met with a large kitchen, four fridges, and a dinner table. On those fridges you’ll see dozens of hand-drawn notes and pictures from children around Tualatin Valley, giving their thanks, love and support to their firefighters. “We love the cards that we get,” said Sherman. “A lot of them we put up in the station.” These firefighters run thousands of calls throughout their career. One of the things that keeps them from burning out is their connection to the community. During Sherman’s earlier years of firefighting, he transported a woman to the hospital so she could deliver her baby. Sherman ended up delivering the baby successfully in the ambulance. CONTINUED >

It just so happened to be Sherman’s birthday that day, and he now receives yearly birthday cards from the woman that he helped. Recently, Sherman and his crew helped a cardiac arrest patient, resuscitating them and later meeting their family when they stopped by the station to thank the firefighters and hear the impact they made on their lives. “I am so thankful that we have amazing people who love this job and want to serve the community,” said Sherman. Several firefighters have deep ties to Tualatin, having grown up in the area, attended Tualatin High School, are raising their families or still have family who live nearby. “We’re all just like everybody else,” said Sherman. “We’re all invested in this community the same way these community members are.” Some of their favorite memories were formed within the Tualatin community. About 20,000 people came to Tualatin last year for the annual Pumpkin Regatta, where people race on the water in hollowed-out pumpkins. A photo of Station 34 racing in the Regatta hangs proudly in their hallway. They participate in the Tualatin Safety Town every year, where campers come to their station to listen to presentations and get to see the behindthe-scenes work that firefighters do. They attend the Tualatin Christmas light parade and have transported Santa on the fire engine to visit with excited children. Station 34 does a special reading night once a year where they go to the local elementary school in their uniforms and read to children. They give station tours, birthday drive-bys in their fire engine, and attend National Night Out each August, where they go to neighborhood barbecues to spend time with their community. Their love for the people they serve runs deep—far beyond the calls they respond to. A lot of station members attend city and council meetings, investing in making their town the best it can be. Some coach local sports, others read at their children’s schools in their uniform, but all of the Station 34 firefighters remain close and connected to not only each other but the people that make their lives possible, including neighboring stations. “I’ve been doing this job for 21 years now,” said Sherman. “It’s easy on busy days to get burnt out. But each of those calls where we really make a difference reminds us why we got into this job.”

HOW ONE DENTAL PRACTICE IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE BEYOND THE CHAIR ARTICLE BY ABBY SNETHEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HAILEY RYAN PHOTOGRAPHY

What makes a smile truly beautiful? Some say perfection, others, uniqueness. For the dentists at New Smiles Dental, it’s confidence. A smile brightens the eyes, can light up a room, and most importantly, can change the way a person sees themselves. For Dr. Nathan Doyel and Dr. Ben Aanderud, that ability to change a life is something they never take for granted. New Smiles, formerly Pacific Family Dental, was established in 1999, and is located near Sherwood High School, directly off Highway 99 West and Meinecke Street. Their team consists of 25 employees including four doctors and eight hygienists. Dr. Doyel and Dr. Aanderud – partners in New Smiles for more than 20 years – have each been practicing dentistry for over two decades. They constantly create a welcoming environment and strive to offer only the best treatment options and care for their patients —just like they would their own families. That commitment shows up in monthly employee training, continual investment in the latest equipment and technology, and a culture that extends beyond the office walls. CONTINUED >

“We want to provide the best care possible,” said Dr. Doyel. New Smiles has two out of eight Implant Specialists in Oregon, right in the same office. They provide a comprehensive range of services, from single to full-mouth implants to bone grafts, crowns, veneers, bridges, state-of-the-art cleanings, sedation options and free consultations. The longevity of their employees and their consistent desire to improve their office, services, and rapport sets them apart from other dental offices in the area. Patients are always at the forefront of the doctors’ minds. “We listen to what their hopes and dreams are,” said Dr. Aanderud. New Smiles has a long-standing motto of treating patients like family, and remaining involved long after treatments are done. Aside from dentistry, the team at New Smiles is involved in various community activities. Back in 2001, their office opened their doors for military personnel who needed checkups before being deployed. When COVID-19 first hit, they were the first dental office in the state to be certified by the CDC to help with vaccinations. They offer free wisdom teeth consultations for high school students, free teeth whitening for established patients and are grateful to give back to their community and schools. The New Smiles family is involved in various events around town. From The Robin Hood Parade and Festival, to the Thanksgiving Day Give ‘n

Gobble, to singing in plays put on by the Voices for the Performing Arts and the Sherwood Foundation For The Arts, to being the Title Sponsors for the sports program at Sherwood High School. The list is endless, and so is their love for their community. Many employees grew up or are raising their kids in Tualatin Valley and are thankful to be able to give back to the community that raised them and their family. Understanding each patient means understanding the Sherwood community as a whole. New Smiles has worked consistently to satisfy each person who walks through their doors and make them feel like a part of the family. “We help anybody who wants to be helped,” said Dr. Doyel. New Smiles stays connected with many of the people they’ve helped, seeing firsthand how a renewed smile can brighten not only their lives, but the lives of everyone around them. Friendships and bonds drive their work that is deeply rooted in empathy, compassion, love and gratitude. People have walked in with little to no teeth and walked out with a bright, beautiful smile, renewed confidence, and a newfound love for themselves. “You can change somebody’s life by changing their smile,” said Dr. Aanderud. For Dr. Doyel and Dr. Aanderud, dentistry has never been just a profession – it’s how they show up in a community that raised their families and shaped their lives. Their gratitude runs far deeper than what happens in a dental chair.

“We listen to what their hopes and dreams are” — Dr. Ben Aanderud

THE LOST Art of ARTICLE BY MICHELLE KARLEBACH, FOUNDER OF SENTINEL SOUND MEDITATION PHOTOGRAPHY BY

LISTENING

HAILEY RYAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Why you should go to a sound bath. Seriously.

A gong rises and splinters into space as the room around you slowly disappears. A chime retrieves a long-lost memory and, with it, a sudden rush of joy. Sounds appear, transform and fade before you have time to hold onto them. And then there is the silence in between. Imagine an uninterrupted hour. No one needs you. There is nowhere else you need to be. Get comfortable. You won’t know what is coming next, and you won’t need to. Just listen and notice. That may sound remarkably simple. These days, it isn’t. We spend much of our lives learning not to listen. We tune out the hum of the highway, the spin of the dryer and the plane overhead. We also tend to tune out the birdsong, the trees in the wind and other sounds that were once at the forefront of human experience. Sound meditation reverses that relationship. Instead of filtering out another thing competing for our attention, it gives us a landscape of sound to discover and fully explore. It isn’t an escape, but a tether to the present moment. And if you’ve never experienced one, I think you should.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO MEDITATE

I had studied Buddhism for years, but traditional meditation remained difficult for me. Sitting still and focusing on my breath left me frustrated, physically uncomfortable and painfully aware of my circular, overanalytic mind. Sound changed that. It gave my attention somewhere to go- an anchor and a guide- without demanding that my mind become something it wasn’t.

20

S ELF CA R E | ARTS + C ULT U RE

You don’t need experience, flexibility, physical fitness, previous knowledge or a belief system. You listen. Your mind wanders. You notice it. You reward yourself for noticing. And you listen again. Voilà.

WE HEAR FAR MORE THAN WE INTENTIONALLY LISTEN TO

Our attentional environment has changed enormously. The same human instincts that once helped us notice something new, seek connection or respond to uncertainty now operate in a world specifically designed to keep calling our attention back. Sound meditation offers a way to reclaim our attention by deliberately choosing exactly where it goes.

SOUND ISN’T ONLY SOMETHING YOU HEAR

This is difficult to explain until you’ve felt it. A large gong can produce tones your body seems to register before your ears do. Think of a rumble of thunder so low it’s felt before it’s heard. The resonance of a mustang drum can be enveloping and grounding, a rhythm that might just come from inside you. Chimes seem to caress the air around you, but their sound arrives from somewhere you can’t quite place. Bowls produce layers of tone that meet, separate, settle and disappear. I’m listening alongside everyone else, making choices within the structure of the meditation- when to build, when to soften and when the most interesting thing I can offer is silence. Goosebumps aren’t unusual. Sometimes there are tears. A sound can produce an unexpected emotion, image or memory entirely your own. Sometimes it just feels extraordinarily good.

“I can’t think of many places where people can be complete After listening that intently, even silence feels different.

THERE IS SOMETHING POWERFUL ABOUT BEING PRESENT TOGETHER

Research is beginning to support something meditation traditions have understood for a long time: practicing together can strengthen our sense of connection. We don’t have to know one another, think alike or have much of anything in common for that to happen. For a short time, a room full of people collectively agrees to do something increasingly unusual: simply be present together. Nobody needs to introduce themselves, explain themselves or find common ground. We can be complete strangers- even polar opposites- and still positively contribute to one another’s experience. There is something reassuringly human about that. For me, that’s where some of the magic of group meditation lives.

MEANINGFUL DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN SOLEMN

There can be joy in meditation. There can be curiosity, surprise and whimsy. You might become completely absorbed in the resonance of a gong and, minutes later, hear an unfamiliar instrument that makes you smile. Your mind may wander. You might feel peaceful, restless, emotional, curious, amused or deeply relaxed. You might fall asleep. None of it means you did it wrong. There is no prize for meditating correctly. Curiosity can bring us into the present just as effectively as concentration can. Sometimes delight gets us there even faster. I don’t call myself a sound healer, although I believe sound can have a profound effect on us. What I know from my own practice is much simpler: there is value in giving ourselves time to pay attention—to sound, to the silences between, and to the people around us. There is something that feels naturally good about finding your way back to a more present version of yourself. Just go to a sound bath. Seriously.

Ride Redefined The bicycle hasn’t changed its purpose. An e-bike simply changes what’s possible.

For generations, the bicycle has been wonderfully simple: two wheels, pedals and your own power. E-bikes haven’t replaced that experience - they’ve expanded it. The biggest difference is exactly what the name suggests: an electric bike adds a motor and battery to assist you while you ride. You still pedal, steer and choose how much effort you want to contribute. Turn the assistance down and do more of the work yourself. Turn it up when you encounter a hill, a headwind or simply want a little help getting home. That assistance can change what’s possible. A rider who once enjoyed ten miles may comfortably now ride twenty. Someone who stopped cycling because of hills may discover riding again. Couples with different fitness levels can ride together without one struggling to keep up. And a person who wouldn’t consider commuting by traditional bicycle may find an e-bike makes leaving the car at home surprisingly practical. But choosing an e-bike involves considerations that don’t exist with a traditional bicycle. Start with how and where you plan to ride. Then consider fit and comfort, motor response, battery capacity and how naturally the assistance feels. Don’t assume the bike with the biggest motor or longest advertised range is automatically the best choice. Safety and support matter, too. Look for a reputable, UL-certified electrical system and consider what happens after you buy. Who will service the bike? Can replacement batteries and parts be obtained? Is warranty support readily available? The best e-bike isn’t necessarily the fastest, most powerful or most expensive. It’s the one that makes you want to ride more.

E-BIKE OR TRADITIONAL? Traditional bikes: Simple, lightweight and powered entirely by you. E-bikes: You still pedal, but choose how much assistance you want. Hills become easier, longer rides become possible and differences between riders matter less. The question isn’t which is better - it’s which one will get you riding more often?

MONEY MATTERS

The Best Things at This Table Are Passed Down

“I will be honest: I ruined Thanksgiving with homemade cranberry sauce. Turns out my family loves the gelatinous goo from the can. Years later, they still bring it up. What I have never ruined is the plan. Same portfolio, same patience, same discipline. Some things you do not experiment with.”

Look around the table this month and notice what is actually there. The stuffing recipe came from your grandmother, who got it from hers. The pie crust technique took three generations to perfect. The serving dish has survived four moves and more than one near miss on the kitchen floor. Nobody at the table invented any of it this year. Someone received it, took care of it, and handed it forward. That is worth being thankful for. It is also worth studying, because the table is quietly showing you how wealth actually works. The best financial inheritances follow the same pattern as the best recipes. They are not handed over cold. They come with instruction. Someone stands next to you in the kitchen and shows you how it is done, year after year, until you can do it yourself and teach the next person. Wealth without wisdom causes problems.

Wealth with wisdom, passed the way a family passes its recipes, can quietly change the trajectory of a family for a century or more. That means the work of legacy is not done at the reading of a will. It is done at tables like this one, in conversations about what the money is for, why the plan looks the way it does, and what it will take to steward it well. Families that have those conversations raise children who become the next link in the chain. Families that skip them hand over assets without the recipe. None of this happens fast. The tortoise wins the race every time, and nothing worth passing down was built in a single season. But it happens reliably in families that decide it should. So this November, be thankful for what was passed to you. Then ask the better question: what are you preparing to pass on?

The Ripple Effect of

Gratitude Make your gratitude more specific. Instead of saying, “Thanks,” try saying why you’re grateful. For example, “Thank you for making coffee this morning. It made my hectic morning feel so much less stressful.” Specific appreciation helps people feel truly seen and encourages more positive interactions.

ARTICLE BY RISE THERAPEUTIC SERVICES

We often think of gratitude as something personal—a simple “thank you” or a quiet moment of appreciation. But gratitude has a much bigger impact than we usually realize. Research shows that when we express genuine appreciation, it doesn’t just make someone feel good in the moment; it can create a chain reaction that spreads far beyond that interaction. On an individual level, practicing gratitude activates areas of the brain associated with dopamine and serotonin, two neurotransmitters that help regulate mood, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being. But one of the most powerful things about gratitude is how it influences the people around us. When someone feels genuinely appreciated, they’re more likely to show kindness and generosity to others. Psychologists refer to this as prosocial reciprocity—the tendency to pay positive experiences forward. For example, a supervisor who sincerely thanks an employee may inspire that employee to help a coworker who’s struggling. That coworker, feeling supported, may go home and have more patience with their family. One small moment of appreciation can continue to ripple outward in ways we never see. Like a stone dropped into still water, the first impact may seem small, but the ripples travel much farther than we expect. A single expression of gratitude has the potential to strengthen relationships, create a more supportive environment, and encourage kindness that extends well beyond the original moment.

GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up

Every year, City Lifestyle sends checks to hundreds of families in need across the country through our annual Giving Campaign and our non-profit arm, Kingdom Building Foundation. But none of it would be possible without you. We can only help the people we know about, and

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.

We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.

“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.

Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.

This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.
