LIFESTYLE LETTER

Let your lifestyle reflect your personal style

This month, we're celebrating the fascinating and deeply personal world of style. Our style can be expressed in so many ways – through clothes, cars, jewelry, hair, friendships, hobbies, even words – and it becomes almost a mirror of our passions. Maybe even our quirks.

And because personal style communicates how we perceive the world and what we value, it's a powerful tool for connecting, enabling us to find common ground with those who share our aesthetic sensibilities.

The best style, of course, is authentic to who you are. It's okay to always be evolving your personal style, and that's what makes it something no one else can pull off quite like you. You can be the trendsetter, but also, you'll always be the original.

We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or to further explore familiar ones. There is so much here in Troy to uplift our spirits, boost our productivity and ignite our creativity.

This month, here’s to being uniquely you!

CHIRAG AND HARNISHA SHAH’S INNOVATIVE PHYSICAL THERAPY CENTER, FYZICAL, RESTORES CLIENTS’ ABILITY TO MOVE BY FOCUSING ON THEIR BALANCE

BY
ZWEIG | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SIMRAN BAJWA

As it does for most of us, for Chirag and Harnisha Shah, autumn in Michigan means leisurely walks, to marvel at the dazzling array of fall colors.

“We have our route that we always take,” Chirag reveals.

“Our love for nature is immense,” Harnisha adds.

But as our bodies age, many of us feel the need to forego those breathtaking autumn walks. Simply put, we’re too afraid of falling to enjoy a Michigan fall.

Harnisha and Chirag say it doesn’t have to be that way. They own FYZICAL, an innovative physical therapy clinic in Troy that restores physical well-being by improving balance. FYZICAL’s “Fight the Fall” campaign touts the transformative power of balance therapy.

“Balance is the primary reason why patients fall,” Harnisha notes.

Harnisha has a master’s degree in exercise physiology.

“I always had a passion for the human mind and body working together, especially as we are aging,” Harnisha shares. She says FYZICAL’s focus is on getting the mind and body to work in conjunction with each other.

I ask Chirag the biggest challenge FYZICAL clients come in with.

“Compensating for a lack of confidence in their balance by using other body parts, which then creates other issues in the body. So we’re sort of retraining the whole body to get back to the way it should be.”

Chirag agrees with his wife that balance therapy is about the mind-body connection.

“Physically, they're experiencing limitations,” Chirag explains. “But mentally those limitations are causing them concerns, or they’re feeling embarrassed. So when we rebuild that physical confidence, that they can take that next step and not fall over, not feel wobbly, that embarrassment starts to go away.”

Utilizing cutting-edge technology, Chirag says FYZICAL gamifies the therapy process, to motivate their clients to participate in their own healing.

“Obstacles courses, machines that light up different colors, ‘find the blue one and step on it’—our program forces clients to not only walk, but also figure out where they need to go and go there. We have balance boards, we have goggles that monitor eye movements. It's a lot of functional training.”

FYZICAL’s therapists always discuss each client’s goals with them before beginning therapy.

“We have patients who want to go on a family vacation,” reveals Chirag, “or take their dog out for a walk, or simply ‘I don’t want a walker—I want to be able to walk on my own.’ So we help them try to get there, session by session.”

Chirag tells me stories of clients who’ve been able to ditch walkers and canes, others who’ve relearned to walk despite vertigo, after strokes, and more.

“We had a patient come in,” Chirag recalls, “and all doctors had given up on them. They were wheelchair-bound. They came to us as an ‘I’ll give it one last shot’ kind of thing. But we were able to get them up and moving again. It's very very uplifting. That’s what we’re about. We keep you moving forward.”

To schedule a free 30-minute consultation at FYZICAL, call (248) 918-4966.

Maximize Your Retirement Savings: Consider a Roth IRA Conversion

A Roth IRA Conversion is a financial move where you transfer funds from a traditional IRA (Individual Retirement Account) or another retirement account into a Roth IRA. Think of it like changing lanes on a highway: you’re moving your retirement savings from one type of account to another.

A Roth IRA Conversion is essentially about paying taxes now to potentially save more on taxes later, giving you more flexibility and tax-free income during your retirement.

TRUSTWORTHY STYLE

Estate planning attorney Greg Hamilton believes in bold adventures—and peace of mind by protecting your assets

Greg Hamilton has lived quite the stylish life: helicopter skiing in British Columbia, scuba diving off the coast of Borneo, a South African safari, canoeing in the Boundary Waters, backpacking around Europe.
“I like helping people solve problems before they’re problems.”

“We even went cage diving with the great white sharks in Gansbaai,” Greg says. “They are big.”

Even his marriage proposal came on a chair lift during a skiing trip.

“I wouldn't give her the ring, because it wasn't insured," Greg recalls. “She said, ‘Just give me the ring.’”

Nothing happened to the ring, and Greg and his wife have been married for 40 years. But I notice Greg chose caution in the midst of adventure. It’s telling, given he’s an estate planning attorney.

“I like helping people solve problems before they’re problems,” Greg says.

Greg's practice handles wills, trusts, probate, business succession—matters that necessitate having challenging conversations about mortality. But from Greg's perspective, estate planning is more than death planning.

“There are three potential phases of life: when you're alive and well, when you're alive and not so

well, and when you're not so alive," Greg says. "You want to do your planning when you’re alive and well.”

Greg’s seen what happens to families who don’t plan.

“Money can do very bad things to a lot of people," he shares. "It can rip families apart—it just is sad to see. And the stuff in the house a lot of times creates more problems than the money. I’ve seen people spend over $10,000 in court fighting over a $10 item.”

There are all sorts of details Greg thinks of that I wouldn’t have, like what happens to frequent flyer miles, or pets, or a cremated parent's ashes.

“I enjoy educating people on possibilities,” Greg says.

Greg recognizes those possibilities aren't always easy to talk about. But he focuses on easing people's minds about the future.

“One lady came in on her birthday," Greg recalls, "and she goes, 'I can't believe I'm giving myself this birthday present.’ It is a present. You get comfort knowing that your wishes are going to be set forth.”

Greg also says the worst time to plan a funeral is when you have to plan a funeral. He shares more stories of interpersonal disasters over that subject.

“Let’s just have an open and frank discussion. I mean, you don't have to tell anyone but me the particulars, but if you want any hymns or Bible passages, let's talk about it."

Greg shares his own funeral plans with a bright smile.

“I’m going to have Iron Butterfly’s ‘In-A-GaddaDa-Vida’ play,” Greg says, "because I want people to sit there for 25 minutes!"

Greg and his wife also plan to be cremated.

“My son always likes to say, ‘Dad. You're dead. I’m going to do what I want to do and you can't stop me.’ And I say, ‘Your mother will probably outlive me, because both her grandmothers lived to 100, and only she has the power to change it.’ And then I remind him that he can get written out of getting anything,” he adds, with that playful smile again.

In contrast to his daring adventures, Greg lives in the same Lathrup Village house he grew up in. That’s where he guided his two sons through Eagle Scouts, and coached three sports for the YMCA.

“I’ve taken some risks in my life,” Greg admits. “But not with the end of life. There, I value peace of mind.”

Vertical Gardens Are Moving Indoors

The Stylish Home Design Trend That Will Have You Saying, “Oh, Grow Up!”

Humans have always had a penchant for propagation. Since King Nebuchadnezzar II built The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the original Seven Wonders of the World) in the sixth century BC, artful gardening has fascinated folks. Today, there is a growing trend (pun intended) in home design that echoes that need to nurture, albeit on a much smaller scale. It goes by many names. Environmentalists refer to them as “green walls” or “ecowalls.” Gardeners may prefer “garden wall” or “edible wall.” Designers have dubbed them “statement walls.” But for our purposes here, we will refer to them as the architects do — as “vertical gardens.”

A vertical garden is essentially a wall, or part of a wall, that is covered with plants growing in soil or another type of medium. Though they began as outdoor architectural attractions, these wonderful wallscapes are popping up indoors, and their benefits go beyond a fancy facade.

The most obvious benefit of a vertical garden is the visual beauty it brings to the room. Its unexpected presence adds surprise and drama, while its living tenants, with their varied textures and individual personalities, add energy and a bit of charm as well.

Beyond the aesthetic advantages, living walls have health benefits. They improve the air quality by adding humidity, trapping dust particles, and absorbing many harmful gasses, replacing them with oxygen. They can help with cardiovascular issues like blood pressure as well as breathing problems associated with allergies and asthma. Because they lend a sense of calm and well being, they can even improve concentration, elevate mood, and reduce stress.

Because these living walls are becoming more popular, demand is driving the price down, making them more affordable for the average homeowner. Kits are available and most feature an integrated water delivery system which makes them low maintenance as well.

As for which types of plants to grow, succulents, mosses, grasses, and ferns are all good choices. Tropical vines work well also, as they can trail down or climb up. Pothos and philodendrons have great climbing capabilities, are fast growing, and low maintenance. The design possibilities are as endless as the plant combinations. So bring the outside in! Simply choose a location with bright, indirect light, and turn your wall into a living piece of artwork with a vertical garden.
