LIFESTYLE LETTER
Celebrate the Women Who Inspire Us Life becomes far richer when we honor the women who shape it. Wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, friends—they're the heart of our homes and the soul of our communities. In my life, it was Cathy Snyder, my editor at the Grand Blanc News, who took me under her wing when I was only 15 years old. Over six incredible years, she taught me the power of community and the joy of storytelling. I'll never forget her. And my mother, the daughter of missionaries in Guatemala, who started working at age 5 and didn't stop until she left us at age 83. She still worked full time and, to the end, exemplified love and sacrifice for individuals above all else. My daughters – Lauren, Becca, Nova and Mary – who, each in their own way, have become women of industry, skill, sacrifice and personal growth. They continue to amaze me every day. And my wife, Margaret, whose selfless heart is drawn to the weak, the forgotten, the lost. The lives she has touched are countless — and her influence on our family, beyond measure. With Mother’s Day around the corner, these are some of the women I honor – women who nurture, mentor, support and uplift. Women who leave a lasting imprint, often in the quietest yet most profound ways. In that same spirit, we take the opportunity this month to champion some of the entrepreneurs and women business-owners who add character and value to our community. One of the joys of publishing this magazine is getting to know and spotlight Troy’s incredible women visionaries. They are creators and connectors, leaders and listeners. Whether making waves in boardrooms or quietly serving behind the scenes, their contributions are inspiring. So, who are you honoring? Take a moment to send a thoughtful message. Make that call. Celebrate the women who have shown up, stood strong and poured into our lives in countless ways. To all the women making Troy more vibrant, compassionate and beautiful—we thank you.

Michelle Choice captivates with baby elephant storytime
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE CHOICE, SHEILA DENSTAEDT AND RUKSANA SALAM PHOTOGRAPHY BY DARREL ELLIS STYLED BY MARGARET MEYER HAIGHT Mastering life's lessons takes time, so we asked accomplished Troy women about their journey from eager beginners to thriving professionals. Here, they reflect on life and business, offering advice to aspiring women — including their younger selves.
MICHELLE CHOICE, EVENT SALES MANAGER, FOGO DE CHÃO; FOGODECHAO.COM
“In my 20s, something that mattered way too much to me was my title, Director of Catering and Events. What I didn’t realize is, the value and fulfillment that comes with success isn’t found in the title on your business card; it’s in the daily grind and people that surround you. Often in motherhood you hear, ‘It takes a village.’ Well, it also takes a village in your personal and professional career. I find myself closer to 40 than 20 and one of the greatest successes I find, looking back, is the people that helped pave the way for me to be where I am today. Without those in your corner cheering you on, you won’t achieve the same way. My biggest supporter is my husband. I can’t imagine my current work-life balance as a soon-to-be mother of two, wife and professional without a partner being my loudest cheerleader. Maybe yours is your mother, co-worker or neighbor, but we all need a cheer squad.”
SHEILA DENSTAEDT, VICE PRESIDENT, TROY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE; TROYCHAMBER.COM
“I’ve been fortunate to learn valuable lessons from leaders and mentors whom I deeply respect. However, the most significant lesson I’ve learned is the importance of showing respect to everyone within an organization, regardless of their role, and learning that no task is ever beneath your position. This mindset allowed me to experience every aspect of the roles I’ve held. I firmly believe that to be an effective leader, it’s crucial to understand and appreciate the work of every position within the company. I’ve had the CONTINUED >

opportunity to clean bathrooms, carry cases of water and even set up displays much larger than myself. Each of these tasks, while seemingly small, has reinforced my understanding of their importance to our collective success, giving me a deeper appreciation for the dedication and hard work of all team members. This shaped my approach to leadership. All roles play a part in driving organizations forward. Respecting each contribution is essential in creating a cohesive, successful team.”

“For aspiring businesswomen, my advice is this: Be unapologetically ambitious — get it, girl! Find inspiring mentors, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Trust your instincts but also be open to feedback. Remember, success is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay focused, driven and never underestimate your own potential. If I could whisper something to my younger self’s ear, it would be this: ‘Give yourself some grace.’ I was so driven, determined to prove myself, that sometimes I’d forget

to breathe. I held myself to impossible standards, constantly comparing my progress to others, but their timeline is not yours. Stop putting so much pressure on yourself to figure everything out immediately. Trust the process. Things have a way of working themselves out, even when it feels like they won’t. Be kind to yourself.” Special thanks to Jeffrey Jucewicz, Jeffrey Floral Architecture, for inviting our Women Of Troy to mingle amongst his collection of life-size topiaries. Jucewicz, a natural-born creative, started as a hairstylist in 1981. His talent even took him to the set of Kelly and Co., doing makeover shows and styling Marilyn Turner’s hair. His boundless creativity bloomed to floral design in 2007, becoming florist to Art Van Elslander and the Townsend Hotel, before pivoting to custom planters for luxury homes and businesses. Adding an unparalleled element of opulence to his business, Jucewicz became the exclusive Michigan distributor of these awe-inspiring sculptural Bacho topiaries. LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FI NAN CE + LE GAL SE RVICE S
Esse Tuke, the founder and principal attorney of The Tuke Firm, PLLC (thetukefirm.com) in Troy, is a powerhouse in the legal world, balancing a thriving family-law practice with a passion for women’s empowerment, wellness and community engagement.
Tuke with her daughter Joelle Gadoua, a legal intern at the Tuke Firm.
With more than two decades of experience, Tuke has built a reputation as a tenacious advocate, skilled negotiator and compassionate counselor for families navigating the legal system. Her journey, however, is not just one of professional success — it is also one of resilience, dedication and an unwavering commitment to balancing career and family. Tuke’s path to law was influenced by her grandfather. “My parents are first-generation American immigrants from Nigeria, and my grandfather was a lawyer and a judge,” she says. “He studied at Oxford University in the UK and then went back to practice in Nigeria.” Inspired by his legacy, she pursued her undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland College Park before earning her juris doctor from Fordham University School of Law in New York City. Her early career saw her clerking for Hon. Kathleen M. McCarthy in the Family Division of Wayne County Circuit Court, where she honed her legal research and advocacy skills. After working as a litigator and mediator, she launched The Tuke Firm in 2009. The firm, built on what she calls “The Tuke Way,” emphasizes client-focused legal solutions that prioritize family well-being. “At first, I was just trying to stay afloat and support my family. But around 2018 or 2019, I shifted toward growth — hiring, implementing systems and building a strong team,” she says. Tuke’s legal expertise is broad, covering divorce, child custody, mediation and complex family litigation, including high-asset divorces. She prides herself on helping clients navigate emotionally charged situations with clarity and strategy.
“I like being able to help people take highly emotional situations and unpack the emotions to focus on what really needs to be figured out,” she says. “My job is to take chaos and turn it into a solution that everyone can agree on.” Beyond her practice, Tuke is deeply committed to mentorship, diversity initiatives and youth empowerment in the Metro Detroit area. She volunteers with the Rochester Community School District Diversity & Inclusion committee and actively mentors aspiring lawyers. Her advice to young women entering law? “It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Find mentors, build a strong network and align your work with your core values,” she says. Balancing her career and personal life as a mother of four has been a journey of intentionality and innovation. “I had to automate a lot — scheduling systems, hiring an admin and meticulously planning my time. I wanted to be there for my kids while growing my practice,” she says. She also emphasizes self-care, practicing yoga, taking walks and relying on faith. “I pray, I ask for wisdom and I take time for myself. It’s important to step away from work sometimes,” she says. With her strong sense of identity, Tuke also understands the power of presentation in her field. “You are speaking with your outfit, your facial expressions and your confidence before you even say a word,” she says. As a black woman in a predominantly white legal space, she is intentional about how she presents herself. “I make sure that when I show up, there’s no confusion about who the lawyer is.”
“It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Find mentors, build a strong
network and align your work with your core values.”

Valencia Younan, owner of Vines Boutique in Troy
Valencia Younan has always been infatuated with how people express themselves through their clothing. “This infatuation grew my love for fashion,” she says. As a senior in high school, she launched her career in the fashion industry when she was hired as a sales associate by a local clothing store, Vines Boutique (@vinestheboutique). “I loved working at a small business because it fostered more personal relationships with the community, versus the nature of big chain stores,” Younan says. “The owner of that store taught me everything I know — from styling outfits to running a business.” Their friendship continued to grow; when the opportunity presented itself to take over the boutique, she says, “it felt like a natural next step. It perfectly aligned with my dreams and aspirations, allowing me to transform my love for fashion into a thriving business.” Despite being only 20 years old, Younan had years of mentorship from the boutique’s original owner, and earned a bachelor’s degree in human resource development, which helped equip her to manage and grow a business — and helped instill the confidence to embrace every opportunity. In November of 2018, Valencia opened her Vines Boutique, starting her journey as entrepreneur. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / T R OY M I

“My expertise continues to grow as my business continues to grow,” Younan says. “I love finding and curating the most stylish looks and staying on top of upcoming trends to bring to my customers. I believe fashion should be both timeless and exciting. I’m dedicated to helping others feel confident and inspired through fashion.”
VALENCIA YOUNAN’S TIPS FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2025
TIP NUMBER 1: “This year, we’ve been drawn to the beauty of tweed for Spring/Summer looks. Although tweed is generally considered a winter staple, lightness of weight, soft hues and versatility of cuts make it easily transition to any season. These pieces are timeless and can be paired with other pieces for a variety of different looks, whether it be professional, casual, formal, during the day or a night out.” TIP NUMBER 2: “When shopping for your wardrobe, focus on versatile and timeless pieces. Assess what you already own, then invest in essentials and basics that can be mixed and matched with a variety of tops and bottoms. Look for items that can work for multiple occasions, and always add accessories to elevate your outfits. You can take any outfit from season to season and style it in a way that makes a statement.”
Cream Floral and Tweed Top + Skirt. Two-piece separates with sequin embroidery and three-dimensional floral appliqués on tweed. Pair the top with jeans or linen pants; the skirt can mix with almost anything, and easily transitions from day to night.

From Stem To Vase: TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART
Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings. As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the
superstitions associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language. In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.
Florals and Fruit Hanging Florals Add a burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase. Fill the surrounding space with water, then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keep the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.

For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact. No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.
Flower Frogs Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.
