LIFESTYLE LETTER

Wellness in 2026 Begins With Purpose The start of a new year always brings a certain energy to Troy — an eagerness to reset, to reimagine what’s possible. It's time to start thinking about new resolutions, new habits and new goals, right? This Health & Wellness issue of Troy City Lifestyle aims to offer something a little gentler and far more powerful: inspiration rooted in purpose. This month, we’re honored to feature Herman and Angela Moore, two people who many know by name, but far fewer know by story. Their journey is a testament to the power of purpose, as they've moved from young college sweethearts to life in the NFL to business innovators, mental-health advocates and wellness leaders. Their message is simple but profound: Becoming healthy, happy and whole isn’t a moment but a lifelong practice. Their insights on resilience and personal growth feel especially relevant as we begin 2026 in Troy, a city filled with people and businesses striving to become the best versions of themselves. In this edition, we also check in with Troy financial advisor Chuck Vercellone, who reminds us that January is the perfect time to reassess our financial health with fresh eyes. And local dentist Dr. Kristen Balutowicz shares how our dental health — often overlooked — plays a surprisingly important role in our overall wellbeing. Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Just as we don’t indulge in a slice of baklava every day, we can still savor it when we do. Just as we don’t overhaul our routines overnight, we can make small shifts that matter — joining a fitness class, strengthening our financial habits or simply carving out a moment to breathe. That's what this issue is all about. Here’s to a healthy, intentional, purpose-driven year ahead, Troy.

HERMAN AND ANGELA MOORE’S BLUEPRINT FOR BEING HEALTHY, HAPPY AND WHOLE.

ARTICLE BY TODD HAIGHT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DARREL ELLIS

THE POWER

OF PURPOSE There’s a quiet power in the way Herman and Angela Moore enter the photo studio. Purposed together for 37 years, with two grown sons they call the heart and soul of their lives, they speak about each other not in grand declarations but in the seamless shorthand of people who have evolved — gracefully, deliberately — side by side. They speak with affection but it’s obvious they don’t rely just on words. Their chemistry shows in glances, subtle gestures and the kind of comfort that can’t be staged. This is how Herman, a former Detroit Lion, and Angela, a licensed therapist and NASM Master Trainer, move through the world — with an ease that comes from decades of shared purpose. “We’ve always been a partnership,” Angela says. “There were years when I was in school at night or Herman was traveling for football or business. We just stepped in for each other. We didn’t even need to talk about it. We just moved as a team.” Today, Herman’s world centers on entrepreneurship, innovation and mentorship; Angela’s focuses on holistic health and building whole, healed people. Together, they have shaped a philosophy that’s as much about service as it is about success. “We love to build people,” Herman explains. “I do it through entrepreneurship and leadership. Angela does it clinically and professionally. But the goal is the same: to help people become complete.” Their paths were not planned to intersect this way. Angela’s calling was born from pain: losing her mother to a sudden stroke at 13, and years later, her brother to mental health struggles.

“WE JUST STEPPED IN FOR EACH OTHER. WE DIDN’T NEED TO TALK A B O U T I T. W E J U S T M O V E D A S A T E A M.” — ANGELA MOORE

“Very early, I learned the consequences of not knowing your state of health,” she says. “Physical, emotional, spiritual — it all matters. And when you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to handle anything life brings.” Movement became her medicine; service her purpose. In 2010, she founded The Body Principle LLC, now through Empowered by Angela (empoweredbyangela.com). Her integrative health organization based in Troy, with clients throughout Michigan, it provides mental health counseling, integrative wellness coaching, corporate wellness workshops — even school-based youth programming to help young people make healthier decisions in a world that rarely slows down to guide them. Even with the very public role she plays, much of her work, she notes, is “quiet” — unseen, unposted, yet felt deeply. Herman affirms her. “Angela’s work has impacted people for years,” he says. “And not all impact is visible. But it all matters.” It’s a theme that mirrors his own evolution. Widely recognized for his time as a Detroit Lions wide receiver, Herman has spent far longer in business — and with equally impressive impact. His Troy-based enterprise (hermanmoore84.com) spans logistics, branding, manufacturing, social content, technology, personal-care products and more. “Innovation happens when you’re not afraid to step outside the traditional path,” he says. “Every field has rules. But you don’t have to let those rules define how far you can go.” Purpose, for him, begins with clarity. “Define what winning looks like for your business or even your personal life. Then you can work backwards. Set goals. Be disciplined. Stay resilient. Adjust along the way,” he says. “Life has quarters, just like a game. You don’t win games in the first quarter. You identify missteps, make your adjustments, then come back for the win.”

“LIFE HAS QUARTERS, JUST LIKE A GAME. YOU DON’T WIN GAMES IN THE FIRST QUARTER. YOU IDENTIFY MISSTEPS, MAKE YOUR ADJUSTMENTS, T HEN COME B ACK F OR T HE W IN.” — HERMAN MOORE That mindset — forward-looking, unfazed by obstacles — has shaped his leadership philosophy. “Forget titles. Tell me who you are and what you actually do. When you think of yourself as a brand — every day — you carry yourself differently. You show up differently.” Purpose, in their home, is not a lofty concept. It’s daily. Intentional. In their marriage, it means supporting each other

unapologetically — giving one another space to grow without fear of outgrowing. In parenting, it means raising sons who believe they can try anything, fail boldly and still be valued and encouraged. In service, it means meeting people exactly where they are, whether that’s a struggling teenager regardless of ethnicity or socio-economic factors or an entrepreneur trying to navigate a shifting economy. FINDING YOUR PURPOSE: TIPS FROM HERMAN AND ANGELA MOORE Transformation is built through small but consistent choices. From Herman and Angela Moore, here are guiding principles for becoming healthier and more purpose-driven in everyday life.

And in health, it means understanding that transformation is not a moment. It’s a lifetime. “There’s no timetable,” Angela says. “As long as you keep trying, you’re not failing. Every day is another chance to do better than the day before.” “We all seem to define ourselves by what we’ve lost rather than what we’ve gained or learned, don’t we? I did for a long time,” she says. “Now I realize everything in my life has shaped and defined who I am today. And I really like her.” When asked about legacy — what they hope people will feel decades from now because of the seeds they’re planting today — their answers are almost startling in their clarity. “I want people to say they became the best version of themselves because of the work we did together,” Angela says. Herman adds: “I want to be remembered not for the touchdowns, but for who I was as a man. Authentic. Purposeful. Impactful.” “When it’s all said and done,” Angela says, “I want to know we didn’t sacrifice each other for the sake of profit or success. Ultimately — we need to be the goal.”

16

I NSP IR E D BY | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

Start where you are. Don’t be ashamed of your starting point; own it. Every step forward counts. Define your win. Decide what success means to you and work backward to identify the steps you need to take. There’s power in asking for help. It’s the most courageous thing you can do. Protect your personal brand. Live it every day and show up with intention. Don’t sacrifice your personal brand, who you are, for an immediate or temporary gain. Focus on today. Small daily decisions shape your future.

When Chuck Vercellone talks about financial planning, it’s never just about the numbers. The longtime Troy-based financial advisor, owner of Wealth Strategies (wsgllc.net) and an Investment Advisor Representative with Osaic Advisory Services, believes that true financial wellness comes from clarity, purpose and relationships built on trust. “I don’t want to be looked upon as just the financial guy,” he says. “I want clients to turn to me for whatever issues they have going on. It’s not just about how much money you make; it’s about whether you’re on track to live the life you want.” That human-first approach has defined Vercellone’s work for more than four decades. Since entering the industry in 1984, he’s helped hundreds of clients navigate life’s milestones — sending kids to college, buying their dream home or finally stepping into a well-earned retirement. Yet for him, the heart of the work isn’t about spreadsheets or markets. It’s about dignity. A Lesson in What Matters Most Vercellone’s career is rooted in a deeply personal story. His father, a pencil-and-paper draftsman for a small firm, lost his job in his early 60s when the company was sold. With no pension and only a small IRA, he was forced to take part-time custodial work to make ends meet. “I believe he aged 10 years that first year,” Vercellone says. “I do what I do so my clients never have to go through what my father did. I want them to retire on their own terms and live out their years with dignity.” That experience became his lifelong motivation — to educate clients early, help them plan intentionally and build a foundation strong enough to weather the unexpected. Before he ever handled a financial portfolio, Vercellone was the assistant manager of the women’s shoe department at Hudson’s in Ann Arbor. A chance call from someone in the financial industry planted a seed, though he didn’t act on it immediately. “I turned him down at the time,” he says. “Four years later, I called him back.” The early years were challenging. Starting out with little training, he learned through persistence and real-world experience. Over time, he built a client-focused practice that reflects his values: honesty, education and empathy. Financial Wellness 101 For readers hoping to start their own journey toward financial well-being, Vercellone’s advice is simple but powerful. “You’ve got to have goals,” he emphasized. “Without knowing why you’re saving, you’re wasting your time.” He encourages clients to start by building a solid emergency fund — three to six months of expenses — before diving into long-term investments. “Don’t clean out your bank account to start saving for retirement if you can’t afford to replace the muffler on your car,” he says. One of his most timeless lessons: Pay yourself first. “When you get paid, make saving your first expense,” he says. “If you wait until the end of the month, there’s never anything left. Even $100 a month adds up. You’ve got to move yourself to the front of the line.”

A Life in Balance Away from the office, Vercellone finds peace in the simple things — family, music and the occasional round of golf. He cherishes time with two grown daughters and granddaughters. “They’re three and five now,” he says. “That’s what really drives me.” And while he jokes that he rarely makes it to the golf course, there’s one constant he can’t live without: the sound of music. “I’ve got it playing all day long,” he says. “Mostly blues, some ’60s and ’70s rock — the good stuff. I can’t always tell you what song just played, but I know when the music stops.” Focus, Family & Fulfillment After 40 years in the business, Vercellone’s focus has sharpened. He’s learned the power of saying no, the importance of narrowing his practice and the value of surrounding himself with other experts. “Clients appreciate that my focus is on their financial plan and not on selling products,” Vercellone says. “I don’t try to be everything to everybody. I’m a specialist. I do planning and money management. If someone needs insurance or Medicare advice, I’ve got trusted partners for that.” His advice: “Don’t try to be everything to everyone,” he advises. “Find what you love, focus on that and build relationships with people who share your values.” For Vercellone, success isn’t measured in quarterly statements; it’s measured in gratitude. “When a client who never thought they could retire calls to say, ‘Thank you, you made it possible,’ that’s what fills my tank,” he says. In a world driven by numbers, Chuck Vercellone brings something rarer to the table: heart. His message is clear — financial wellness isn’t about wealth alone. It’s about confidence, connection and living a life that, like good music, never stops playing.

CHUCK VERCELLONE’S TOP-3 FINANCIAL WELLNESS TIPS

1. Pay Yourself First. Before you pay the bills, pay you. Even $100 a month makes a difference. “If you wait until the end of the month to save,” Chuck says, “there’s never anything left.” Automate transfers to savings or investment accounts so it happens without thinking. 2. Build Your Foundation. A strong financial plan starts with an emergency fund. Aim for three to six months of expenses in a liquid account. “Don’t invest every dollar you have,” he advises. “If your car breaks down, you don’t want to dip into retirement savings to fix it.” 3. Know Your ‘Why.’ Goals give your money purpose. “If you don’t know what you’re saving for, you’ll lose motivation,” he says. Define what matters most — whether it’s college, retirement or travel — and align your plan with that vision. JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / T R OY M I

KB Dental turns dreaded visits into family fun.

ARTICLE BY LINDA DITCH

A visit to the dentist isn’t at the top of most people’s list of favorite activities. But, the team at KB Dental wants to change that perception. Their goal: to make patients of all ages feel comfortable throughout their visit, and happy that they took steps to care for their oral health when they walk out the door.

Dr. Sara Hannoodi

With locations in Troy and West Bloomfield, KB Dental (kbdental.com) can be a one-stop shop for a family’s dental needs. When Kristen Balutowicz, DDS, bought the practice in 2016, she was determined that patients wouldn’t feel like they were going through an assembly line. The practice offers everything from basic oral hygiene services, including fillings and root canals, to more technical procedures such as restorative dental implants and cosmetic porcelain veneers, Invisalign and teeth whitening. “We want to treat patients like an extension of our family, and provide good care in a friendly atmosphere,” Dr. Balutowicz says. “We offer a boutique-style experience with a very high standard of care that features the latest technology. “We like to have fun, and we worked hard to build a team based on teamwork, where everyone works toward a common goal,” Dr. Balutowicz says of the group, which includes doctors Jennifer Murri, Dawn Mann, Sara Hannoodi and Ashley Metz-Suska. “We’re here for the patients, to do a good job and treat them well.” For those anxious about visiting the dentist, KB Dental offers a comfort menu to help ease their nerves.

The list includes weighted blankets, nitrous oxide gas, noise-cancelling headphones, sunglasses to block out the bright lights, televisions and squishy balls. When kids come for an appointment, each doctor takes the time to talk to them. They let children touch and hold the instruments and get creative in describing what’s going to happen. “We have certain words for things we use, like sleepy juice, Mr. Bumpy, the polishing tool, and Mr. Whistle, the drill,” Dr. Balutowicz says. “And I will make up a story so they can try to picture what’s going on, like, ‘Okay, I’m going after the sugar bugs. Oh my gosh, there’s a mom sugar bug. She’s wearing purple shoes. Oh, there’s the baby sugar bug.’” Adding to the “treat” in treatment: Each patient gets to choose a gift from the practice’s prize boxes. Kids choose from fun toy items after each procedure; an adult prize box offers a selection of gift certificates, wine, golf balls and more to choose from after completing their entire prescribed treatment. “It’s a big hit,” Dr. Balutowicz says. “We know it’s not fun to have dental work done, so we want to celebrate when patients make a commitment to improving their oral health.” JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Pro tips from local coach Amy Bellinger.

HEALTH

Amy Bellinger is on a mission — one that was inspired by changes in her own life. A longtime interior designer, the fitness enthusiast realized the same desire to create comfortable, beautiful spaces for her clients’ homes also applied to their health. “As a woman in my late 40s, I experienced firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate hormone shifts, stubborn weight gain, energy dips and poor sleep,” the West Bloomfield resident says. Discovering FASTer Way to Fat Loss, a fitness program that helps clients to lose weight and gain muscle while teaching them how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, Bellinger (fasterwaycoach.com/?aid=AmyBellinger) discovered that “whole-food nutrition, strategic strength training and sustainable habits could completely transform how I felt in my body — and change my body composition,” she says. “After my own health transformation,” Bellinger says, “I felt drawn to health coaching to help others feel stronger, healthier and more confident.” Being a coach, she says, has “allowed me to guide so many women back into the confidence they thought they had lost.” Here, a few of her favorite helpful tips.

Amy Bellinger helps clients to teach their body to burn fat for fuel through intermittent fasting, carb cycling, macro tracking and effective 30-minute at-home workouts. “I help midlife women burn stubborn belly fat, build muscle, balance hormones and create sustainable healthy habits through whole food nutrition, strategic strength training and mindset coaching,” she says. Gone, she adds, are the days of undereating and overexercising.

• Batch Cook “I keep my food simple and family-friendly — when you have foods prepped and ready to go, you’ll be far less likely to grab mindless snacks because the nutritious choice becomes the easy choice,” she says. “I batch-cook protein like chicken, ground beef, turkey and hard-boiled eggs so I always have healthy options available. I do the same with my vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and Brussels sprouts so meals come together in minutes. While my vegetables are roasting I’ll add in sweet potatoes and cook rice a couple of times a week, so meals are grab-and-go. This keeps me consistent even on the busiest days. I add these items to salads, egg scrambles or bowls with a base of rice or potatoes.” • Planning and Prep “Eating at home is always healthier and, let’s be honest, less expensive than eating out at restaurants or going through the drive-thru. A little bit of planning and prep goes a long way and will ensure you are in control of how you fuel your body,” Bellinger says. “When I do go out to eat, I set realistic expectations that it won’t be perfect. I focus on dishes with protein and fiber to keep me full. Most restaurants are accommodating when it comes to special requests: Ask to have your protein grilled instead of fried, for example. Most importantly, enjoy time with family and friends.” • Pack and Go “Be prepared on the go by having healthy snacks prepped and ready. I always aim for a balance of protein or healthy fat paired with fiber to keep me energized,” Bellinger says. “A great option is hard-boiled eggs because they are high in protein and perfect with cucumber slices. I also love tuna paired with seed crackers when I want something crunchy. For quick and portable, apples and berries are amazing high-fiber options that require zero prep. Add a handful of nuts or a spoonful of nut butter for the perfect combo of healthy fat and fiber for steady energy.”

CHEERS cherries TO CELEBRATE HEALTH, WELLNESS & DRY JANUARY WITH THIS SUPERFOOD MOCKTAIL It’s been said that “life is just a bowl of cherries,” and it just so happens that cherries might improve your life. This nutrient-dense, heart-healthy fruit may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, combat inflammation, help the body manage stress, speed recovery after exercise, balance your mood and help you sleep. To say it is a superfood may be an understatement. So it’s only fitting that we include a mocktail recipe with cherries as the star ingredient this month. Let’s drink to health, wellness and a wonderful year ahead! Cheers!
