Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. When we are born into this world, we arrive as a blank canvas. And with a splash of paint here and a brushstroke there, every experience and every person in our lives, whether good or bad, adds paint to our canvas. Indeed, our lives as they exist currently are layers upon layers of paint that when viewed as a whole, tell the story of who we are. Our experiences, our journey, our passions, and our love. And if the later stages of our lives are spent on adding the fine intrinsic details that complete our masterpiece, then the impressionable early childhood years are the broad brushstrokes that comprise the background. Such was the case for Abel Garcia, who at the age of six, told his grandfather that he wanted to be a famous artist. To which his grandfather in perfect wisdom replied, “Don’t tell me, show me.” But like layers of a painting, as time marches forward some of those marks on our lives and our hearts will get obscured by new experiences and new people. Some even completely covered and hidden, no longer visible to the outside world.

After graduating from New Mexico State University, Abel moved back to the DFW Metroplex and began working as a personal trainer at the local gym. It was there, 13 years ago, that he met his future wife, Rachel. She would visit the gym when she came back to Dallas during the summer and winter breaks from her studies at Florida State University. Rachel invited Abel to join her and some of her friends for a New Year’s Eve party, and once they kissed that midnight, they have been together ever since. Rachel was getting her start as an event planner while Abel was holding down successful jobs, albeit not fulfilling ones. “I actually failed my way into being an artist. I tried a ton of careers and I just felt dead inside. I just knew that I had something to offer the world. I was doing corporate leasing, corporate restaurant management; I had decent jobs but nothing caught my attention like creating. You’re going to go through that as a creative, you are your own worst enemy, you’re always in your head. You’re always presenting a part of you that is not explainable.”

Eventually, with each other’s love and support, they both found their footing and their careers blossomed into entrepreneurship. “Society tells you that you have to have a perfect job,” Rachel adds. “But we have done a really good job of being able to love each other and supporting each other to follow our passions as entrepreneurs.” Rachel is now the owner of As You Wish Events, a luxury wedding and event planning business in Dallas. It was through the encouragement of her mentor that Rachel says she first had the dream of owning a business. “I had a fabulous mentor who really believed in me,” Rachel says. “I had never planned on owning a business until she said, ‘You can do this; you have the talent for it and I believe in you.’ And that’s all that it took for me to spark that dream and to take the bull by the horns and give it a shot.” As You Wish Events also does celebrity party planning, and over the top baby showers, graduation parties and milestone events. “Our biggest budget wedding ever was a $750,000 budget, multi-day wedding. standing in the ballroom at the end of the last night and just looking around thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, I did that, I pulled this off!’ And it was magical, it made me really proud of what I had accomplished, especially at such a young age.” Abel is now an accomplished artist, with an impressive and growing client list that consists of millionaires, billionaires, and professional athletes. His modest art studio, The Creation Station, is located at the Shops at Legacy, and is actually a garage that he has converted into a creative studio space. And while he has some high-profile clients, Abel’s biggest joy is creating art pieces for people who have lost loved ones. “It’s such a huge honor, but I will call Rachel sometimes emotional and crying, because I get in my feels by thinking about how we are all eventually going to have to go through something like this.” Abel’s other great joy is to partner with and donate his artwork to charities or organizations (such as military, homeless, and underprivileged children) to help them raise money for worthy causes. Recently he donated art to be auctioned off to raise money for ballerinas who couldn’t afford to attend camps and classes. “There’s been so many people who have helped me get to where I’m at, it’s my due diligence to give back to communities and organizations. That’s the

power of the art, and I’m a very thankful person to be able to do what I do.” Of course, Abel and Rachel also did the planning for their own wedding six years ago. In doing so, Rachel, being a professional luxury wedding and event planner, felt the pressure of balancing her and her company’s reputation with allowing the freedom of expressing themselves as creatives. “Abel really reminded me of the importance of why we are doing this, first of all; and second of all, that we don’t have to follow a certain trend or anything, we are allowed to be us.” So instead of hiding their brushstrokes, they featured them with bright bold colors instead of traditional whites, and a “Be a part of our art” blind-embossed save the date cards that required the recipients to paint the card to reveal the details. One of the things Abel likes to do when starting a new painting, is to write inspirational quotes, positive messages and Bible verses into the bottom layer. Much like the brushstrokes in our own lives, they will gradually and eventually get painted over as Abel adds layer after layer of paint to the piece. In fact, the person who commissioned the painting or who ends up purchasing it may never even know that it is there. But Abel does and that is an integral part of what makes him, and his art, the masterpieces that they are.

When Tiffany Poole started thinking earlier this year about acquiring a spa to add to her growing list of businesses, she knew exactly who she wanted to run the day-to-day operations. Natalia Nakamura was not only her best friend, but also her boxing coach and fiercest rival in the gym that Natalia ran. Both women adhere to the “core four” of priorities - faith, family, finances, and fitness. Tiffany wanted to purchase an existing spa in Colleyville and knew she wanted Natalia to partner with her. “Because we were so close, I didn’t want to put her in a position to influence her, so I started dropping little hints like, ‘What would you do if you had a piece of something bigger? Because you’re running this gym, but you’re just going to cap out your salary and it’s never going to be yours. What if you had something similar

that you would actually enjoy more and you could add your name and be a part of something that you even pass on to your children?” Being a methodical thinker, it took Natalia some time to come to a decision. “I went to her and I said, ‘I’m in,’ Natalia recalls, “But I’m not in if this affects our friendship; because I love you too much. If we are good on that aspect, then let’s do this.” With Natalia onboard, Tiffany acquired the spa and former competitors hit the ground running. “I knew that I couldn’t do it without her,” Tiffany says, “I need someone that can run the day-to-day operations and that’s really her forte’ and her expertise.” The result was a complete remodel and re-brand, transforming the over ten-year-old day spa on Glade Road in Colleyville, into the high-class DiVine Med Spa with the latest in technology and services. But they knew that a new name, a shiny logo, and a high-class facility were pointless if they weren’t committed to having their customers’ best interests in hand. “I understand the stigma behind a med spa, that they are vain, and whatever people want to think about that,” Natalia says. “But for us, we are here to make you feel beautiful and worthy from the inside out. Because that’s truly where our hearts are. Like hey, you’re feeling insecure a little bit; so we want you to come and we want to connect with you in a way that we can help you feel good from the inside out; because that’s where it starts. It goes hand in hand with our fitness background. It all starts somewhere else. It all starts somewhere deeper. So we can give you the services, but you are not going to feel beautiful and confident just by sticking all of this stuff in your face. We’ve got to figure out in your mind and in your heart what’s going on first. And that’s what we lead with, so we want our customers to know that DiVine is way more than just a med spa.” CONTINUED >

“When you come into DiVine Med Spa, we are not going to be there to sell you or upsell you on some product or service,” Tiffany says. “We actually want to educate before we enhance. It really is about how we can achieve what they want, without doing something that maybe harms them in a way just because they thought they knew what they wanted but end up disappointed with the results since it’s not what they really needed. We want them to leave saying, ‘I am happy, I feel good inside, and I love my outcome.’” When asked what their favorite services are, both Tiffany and Natalia immediately listed the Morpheus8, a radiofrequency skin tightening technique used on many parts of the face and body. A good candidate for the Morpheus8 the ladies said, is anyone that has fat, loose skin, scars or stretch marks that they are unhappy with. “It’s going to put surgeries out of business,” Tiffany says. Another exciting new treatment is the EvolveX, which is also a non-surgical procedure designed specifically to increase muscle strength to enhance the shape and tone of your body without any incision, scarring, or downtime. Good candidates for the EvolveX are anyone who has fat and loose skin they want to get rid of, but don’t have any marks on top of the skin and therefore don’t need the Morpheus8. For some people, the idea of going into business with their best friend would be daunting, but Tiffany said Natalia is the only person she would have been willing to partner with. “I actually think it’s more difficult than a marriage. Because with marriage you at least have the romantic feelings to get you through the hard times. But we don’t get that.” Having strong communication skills with your best friend is one thing, but once money is involved, it’s on a whole other level. “For me,” Natalia

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our three tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

1. USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

2. ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

3. UPGRADED HANGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:
