Before the American Heart Association existed, people with heart disease were thought to be doomed to complete bed rest — or destined to imminent death. But a handful of pioneering physicians and social workers believed it didn’t have to be that way. They conducted studies to learn more about heart disease, America’s No. 1 killer. Then, on June 10, 1924, they met in Chicago to form the American Heart Association — believing that scientific research could lead the way to better treatment, prevention and ultimately a cure. The early American Heart Association enlisted help from hundreds, then thousands, of physicians and scientists. From humble beginnings, the AHA has grown into the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Hats for Heart, a part of the Go Red for Women movement which raises awareness about women’s heart disease, will include onsite health screenings and assessments, a riveting fashion show, a purse-onality auction, delicious lunch, heart-warming survivor story and more. Women are our mothers, our sisters, our daughters, our spouses, and our friends. They are doctors, lawyers, changemakers, leaders, encouragers, our household stabilizers, and our master jugglers. They give and give and give often at the expense of their own health resulting in the fact that 1 in 3 women are dying from cardiovascular disease. Hats for Heart is centered all around changing this unacceptable fact.80% of cardiovascular disease is preventable. Through education, empowerment and taking small everyday actions, we can all work together to build a healthier world for ourselves and the women we love. We are actively working to implement sustainable change for better health throughout Tarrant County, and we cannot do it without YOU! Red Bag Project The holidays are all about giving, and what better way to give than by volunteering or joining organizations whose efforts impact your own neighborhood and communities? We recently had the pleasure of shining the spotlight on Altrusa’s red bag food drive, which will take place this month right here in Trophy Club. We asked Debby Gallagher to share with our readers more about this important organization and opportunity to give back.

TWCL: WHAT IS THE ALTRUSA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION AND WHEN WAS IT FOUNDED? Debby: Altrusa International is a civic women’s club that was founded in 1917 in Nashville, Tennessee, as a service organization for women, similar to the Rotary Club for men. Today, both organizations invite men and women to join as members. Some of the projects and organizations that Altrusa supports are Catholic Charities, The Stepping Stones Foundation, Community Storehouse, The Center for

Transforming Lives, Christ’s Haven for Children, The Community Enrichment Center, Christmas is for Children, various Independent School Districts, several food banks, and the Malaik Orphanage in Uganda where we have funded the installation of solar panels and assisted with tuition. The local club, Altrusa DFW, was established in 2002 as a 501(c)(3) community service organization. It is a small but mighty group of about 25 members that impact over 8,000 lives each year. We are a diverse group of highly-skilled individuals united with a strong commitment to service and bettering the community by promoting personal growth, professional leadership, and supportive friendships, through hands-on community service. Several of Altrusa DFW’s projects specifically mentor developing local youth and their understanding of serving the community.

The participating students earn volunteer hours by meeting to sort and prep bags of food, by the delivery of bags and signs, and by collecting and delivering food to Southlake Carroll High School. This year, everyone will meet at a centralized drop off point where several food banks and agencies will have trucks to pick up food to be delivered to their food banks. This will allow us to not overload one food bank while another is still in need. The bags will be distributed on December 2-3, with collection by the students between 1:30-2:00 pm on December 10. Unfortunately, we don’t have the ability at this time to make it to all of the beautiful communities of Trophy Club, but everyone is welcome to meet at the Byron Nelson High School parking lot by the baseball fields on December 10 at 2 PM with your contribution. Here’s a list of things we will be collecting: beans (dried or canned), dry pasta and rice, pasta sauces, macaroni and cheese, instant potatoes, stuffing mix, canned fruit and vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, pancake mix, juice, canned soup, canned tuna or meat, cereal and oatmeal, granola bars, deodorant, laundry soap and supplies, sealed toothbrushes, toothpaste, and toilet paper. We do keep track of our collections from the bags every year, and our goal is a 20% return from the previous year. Altrusa contributes over 20,000 pounds of food collected across Tarrant County and thanks to our part, Denton County as well.

A little over 10 years ago, a small group of middle school boys in the Turnberry and Highlands subdivisions here in Trophy Club took part in a service project collecting bags of food for those less fortunate. They handed out about 200 bags and captained the streets where they lived. This year, we plan to pass out over 2,000 bags with the assistance of multiple groups, including the Byron Nelson High School National Honor Society, Tidwell Middle School, Grapevine Faith, and Smart Initiatives, a student run, nonprofit organization.

Some of Altrusa DFW’s signature service projects include a backpack drive, a school supply drive, the red bag food drive, creating holiday baskets for the local ISD support staff, filling the

gap - which provides household and personal necessities to local families in need, Astra student service clubs, Young DFW, and the Malaik orphanage in Uganda, to name a few. Altrusa is always welcoming new members to join in helping with any of our projects. Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh Rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
