Daniel Horsch, director of marketing and brand management for Grapevine, gave us the inside scoop on all of the behind-the-scenes details. As you will read, lots of orchestrated planning makes the city the most wonderful place to be during the holidays. TROPHY WEST CITY LIFESTYLE (TWCL): WHAT MAKES THE CHRISTMAS CAPITAL OF TEXAS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE FOR FAMILIES AND KIDS OF ALL AGES? City of Grapevine: The Christmas Capital of Texas is an experience everyone should enjoy during the holidays! There is no better place to make holiday memories than here in Grapevine. Kids of all ages love all the events that occur throughout the season such as the ever-popular North Pole Express, ICE! at the Gaylord Texan, Snowland at Great Wolf Lodge, the Parade of Lights, the Merry & Bright drone show spectacular and more. Not to mention the addition of the brand-new ice skating rink on Peace Plaza near Harvest Hall on Main Street. It will be the largest outdoor rink in North Texas; there will be fun around every corner this year in Grapevine. Families return yearly because they know that Grapevine always goes above and beyond during the holidays. It’s like stepping into a Hallmark movie as you stroll around historic downtown Grapevine. It’s the people, the history, and the tradition – there’s nothing like it anywhere else in Texas!
TWCL: TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE HISTORY OF CCOT. City of Grapevine: We’ve been obsessed with Christmas long before the State of Texas proclaimed us the Christmas Capital of Texas in 2009. The spirit of the holidays goes hand-in-hand with our values that are steeped in hospitality. You get an unmistakable feeling of joy when you experience the holidays in Grapevine. We do our best to make good on our promise that everyone will leave with a smile from ear to ear when they visit the Christmas Capital of Texas.
TWCL: HOW EARLY DO YOU BEGIN PREPARING FOR CCOT SINCE SO MANY EVENTS ARE INVOLVED – FROM NORTH POLE EXPRESS TO CHRISTMAS ON NASH FARM? City of Grapevine: While some events take planning months in advance, the reality is that we’re always planning and prepping for the holiday season. It’s an ongoing process, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s like being able to work in Santa’s workshop all year long.
TWCL: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE LOGISTICAL CHALLENGES IN PLANNING? City of Grapevine: We welcomed more than one million guests last year. However, that did come with logistical challenges that we overcame. We increased the area of our sidewalks by adding stanchions to help improve the flow of foot traffic on Main Street to ensure our guests were as safe as possible during their visit. Although it took out parking spots for some of our businesses, they were more than accommodating knowing that more people would be able to walk safely throughout the day and night. More crowds also meant increased security, which we source directly from the Grapevine Police Department. Safety is critical and we are in constant contact with the police department to ensure our guests' safety and overall well-being.
TWCL: HOW MANY LIGHTS DO YOU USE TO DECORATE MAIN STREET AND SURROUNDING AREAS, AND HOW MANY CREWS/PEOPLE ARE INVOLVED IN PUTTING UP LIGHTS? HOW EARLY DO YOU START? City of Grapevine: The teams at Public Works assist with putting up decorations and lights all over the city. I can’t tell you exactly how many people and crews are involved but I can tell you that it’s an orchestrated effort on their part. There are multiple shifts that the teams put in to ensure that everything is ready once we “hit the switch” during the 34th Annual Carol of Lights on November 21. This marks the official start of the Christmas season in Grapevine.
TWCL: IF YOU’RE PLANNING TO BRING YOUNGER CHILDREN OR GRANDCHILDREN, HOW CAN FAMILIES BEST PLAN TO VISIT CCOT? City of Grapevine: The best place to start is our website, which will have all the information you need to plan your trip at GrapevineTexasUSA.com. We launched a brand-new website last month so the timing couldn’t be more perfect! TWCL: WE KNOW THAT THE NORTH POLE EXPRESS IS SOLD OUT AND HAS A WAITING LIST. HOW SOON SHOULD FAMILIES START PLANNING FOR NEXT YEAR? City of Grapevine: The North Pole Express is based on the famous children’s story, the Polar Express. Don’t worry, people get it mixed up all the time and still call it the Polar Express when booking tickets. But we’ll also have other opportunities for those who want to stay in the know ahead of next year’s on-sale date which will occur the third week in July. Kids express the fun and excitement of riding the North Pole Express sporting their best Christmas PJs and mingling with Santa.
TWCL: HOW MANY SANTAS, ELVES, MRS. CLAUSES DO YOU EMPLOY TO ENSURE KIDS ARE HAPPY?

City of Grapevine: We work with more than a dozen trained entertainers with whom we’ve worked for years. Some have been with us for 10-plus years! It takes a lot of dedicated individuals to fill these roles. They are what our visitors, young and old, will remember the most during their time in Grapevine so we take great care in ensuring we bring the best people on board every season. This year’s cast is incredible and can’t wait to share the holiday spirit with all the guests who will visit the Christmas Capital of Texas.
TWCL: WHAT ARE SOME TIPS TO SHARE WITH THOSE WHO LIKE TO AVOID CROWDS, PLAN AROUND NAP TIMES, ETC? ARE THERE DAYS/TIMES WHEN YOU WOULD RECOMMEND VISITING? City of Grapevine: It’s almost always busy at night during the holidays. We recommend coming earlier in the week as the sun sets to take in the lights and other activities around Main Street. I would say the same for those looking to experience all the events at Gaylord Texan, including ICE!, whose theme this year is the Polar Express. You don’t have to be a guest at the hotel to experience their events, although many do require tickets. Make sure everyone wears comfy shoes and don’t forget to bring everyone’s favorite blanket. It will be perfect for snuggling with in the stroller. Depending on how far you are from Grapevine, consider building your nap time after your visit if you can come during the day. If not, we can almost guarantee your little one will snooze in the car after getting their wiggles out.

TWCL: WE KNOW THIS IS ALWAYS THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN PEOPLE ARE ASSESSING TAX INCENTIVES AND BENEFITS BEFORE THE CLOSE OF THE YEAR. WHY WOULD INVITO ENERGY PARTNERS BE A GOOD INVESTMENT FROM A TAX PERSPECTIVE? Invito Energy Partners: The primary reason is the tax benefits. Through the tax code, the federal government has incentives to promote private capital to flow to the development of domestic oil and gas production. This allows a substantial portion of an investor’s initial investment to offset and reduce taxable income directly. This means that these investments are uniquely positioned relative to alternatives. Second, the equity markets are down substantially in 2022 and direct energy investments are un-correlated to equities and offer an investor diversification in their portfolios.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
