THE D E TA I L S KEEP THE FUN IN YOUR WEDDING PLANNING

TO SAY THERE'S A LOT TO THINK ABOUT WHEN PLANNING YOUR WEDDING IS A VAST UNDERSTATEMENT. FROM INVITATIONS, TO MUSIC, TO FLOWERS, TO CATERING, THE "TO-DO" LIST CAN SEEM OVERWHELMING. BUT IT'S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT YOUR BIG DAY IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN! If you're feeling a bit paralyzed by what lies ahead, take a deep breath, sit down with your sweetheart and map out three or four elements of your wedding that are truly important to you. Once these key pieces are in place, you'll find it much easier — and less stressful — to knock off all the other items on your wedding day checklist. Other tips: Set deadlines (and keep them) to help you feel in control. Stay organized by keeping all of your planning info in one place (whether that's a digital file or physical binder). And delegate, delegate, delegate: Your friends and family are excited and eager to help — so loosen up and let them! To help jumpstart your planning, we've highlighted four Towson-area establishments that are particularly popular among area couples. ARTICLE SUE DEPASQUALE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 12

KATE MCGRAIN AND ANDREW CAPORASO One look at the gorgeous Gramercy Mansion and its grounds in Greenspring Valley, and Kate McGrain and Andrew Caporaso knew they’d found the ideal spot to celebrate their nuptials. Gramercy “encompassed our hope for a garden wedding, while also feeling like home,” Kate says. As they planned their big day, she and Andrew were committed to being as resourceful as possible. “Obviously, weddings are expensive, so we tried to reduce, reuse and recycle to limit our footprint and costs,” Kate says. “We wanted the focus to be on the moments and people of the day.” In keeping with that philosophy, Kate turned to Local Color Flowers—a Baltimore-based floral design business that is committed to responsible use of resources, supporting the local economy and promoting neighboring farms—for her flowers. “While we had mentioned a color palette, since Local Color uses flowers and plants that are local and in season, the bouquets and centerpieces were a surprise the day of!” she says. The couple’s close friend Justin White officiated, and Baltimore caterer Zeffert and Gold provided the delicious fare, including an ice cream sundae bar “to honor my mom’s mom and brother,” Kate says. “It was a fun way to have them there in spirit.” Looking back, the couple couldn’t be happier with the way their wedding unfolded. “We wanted to savor as much as possible of the day and to have folks be present with us, so we asked for no photos during the ceremony, and we wrote moments into the ceremony to pause and drink it up,” Kate says. “And we had the most fun garden dance party we could have asked for!”

midday workout. “It really brought my faith back into perspective and showed me that CrossFit isn’t what defines me—it’s Christ and my faith. And that’s why I got the tattoo Galatians 6:14—it really put everything into perspective.” In the midst of preparing for his 2014 competition, Rich became a father for the first time when he and Hillary adopted their now 4-year-old daughter, Lakelyn—an event that had a large impact on his decision to remove himself from individual competition. “Stepping away from the individual side, that had to happen. When I was in individual, I was so fixated on competing at the highest level—which you have to be to be the best in the world at anything,” Rich says. “There was no balance in my life, and I saw that. When we were going to have Lakelyn, I was like, ‘you know what, either my fitness and me competing at that level is going to have to give or me being a dad.’ I wasn’t willing to sacrifice being a dad.” Rich and Hillary, who now have three adopted children: Lakelyn; Trice, whose full name is Richard III; and Harper Violet, Lakelyn’s biological sister, have found some of that seemingly unattainable balance through Rich’s transition team competitions, which have allowed him more of an opportunity to think about training while he’s training and to not think about training while he isn’t.

ALI TRUE SHARES STRATEGIES TO AVOID INJURY WHILE GETTING FIT

MANY OF US START THE NEW YEAR WITH GOOD INTENTIONS, EAGER TO GET BACK IN SHAPE AND LOSE THOSE STUBBORN POUNDS GAINED OVER THE HOLIDAYS. “But you need to ‘be smarter before you go harder,’” advises Ali True, founder of True Balance Studio in Anneslie. Too many people jump into hardcore training programs they’re not ready for, she says. The result? Derailing injuries. “The biggest reason people drop off from their fitness plans by mid-January is because they’ve gotten hurt, or they’re experiencing pain when they work out,” Ali says. “We all have hurdles that often make our health and wellness not top priority. This takes us further and further from the person we need to be better. Jumping back into a training program needs to be slow and progressive, to avoid injury. Our bodies change as we get older, the structure of our spine changes, our bodies are less forgiving and more vulnerable. We need to be mindful about how hard we can push and smart about the form this needs to be achieved.” In the exercises that follow, Ali demonstrates some gentle ways to prevent injury in our quest to get more fit.

Use Band Rows to Improve Posture Driving and excessive sitting at a desk compromise our posture. Choose a band that is taut enough to challenge the muscles. Wrap the band around a stable object. Hold the handles, pull the hands toward the chest, keep elbows close to the body and squeeze shoulder blades together for 5 seconds. Release slowly and repeat 10 times.

Stretch the Chest Using Door or Wall Spending hours looking down at screens can shorten our chest and shoulder muscles. Increasing flexibility takes strain off the neck and may reduce headaches. Face the wall; raise arm to shoulder height; bend the arm 90 degrees, bring the elbow to the wall, using the wall as resistance, and gently turn away. Maintain light stretch across chest and shoulders for 30 seconds. Repeat on other side.

“We all have hurdles that often make our health and wellness not top priority. This takes us further and further from the person we need to be better. Jumping back into a training program needs to be slow and progressive, to avoid injury.”

Use a Spiky Ball to Massage the Feet Abusing our feet by excessive walking or standing in improper shoes can cause joint misalignment and the arch to flatten. Massaging your foot with a spiky ball increases circulation and reduces the risk of injury from exercise. Sit in a chair or stand, then roll each foot, one at a time, over the ball in any direction. Apply as much pressure as you can tolerate for 30 seconds, two to three times per foot.

Calf Stretches to Reduce Pain Tight calves can lead to pain in the ankles, knees and hips. Stand on a step; drop one heel at a time; reach the heel toward the floor and hold for 30 seconds. Only stretch to a tolerable level. Repeat two to three times on each side.

Strengthen the Gluteus Muscles The glutes are essential for proper alignment of the hips, knees and spine. Proper alignment reduces pain and injury to the joints. Use a resistance loop band; place the band just above the ankles, feet shoulder-width apart. The band should be taut but not over-stretched. Walk sideways 10 steps then switch directions. Do not drag the foot. Make sure the knees stay in line with the foot and the toes are faced forward throughout the entire movement. January 2019 | Towson Lifestyle

FINANCIAL BUZZ

five ke y s t o i n v e s t i n g fo r retirement IT'S NEVER TOO EARLY (OR LATE) TO SECURE YOUR FAMILY'S FUTURE

1. DON'T LOSE GROUND TO INFLATION It's easy to see how inflation affects gas prices, electric bills and the cost of food; over time, your money buys less and less. But what inflation does to your investments isn't always as obvious. Let's say your money is earning 4 percent and inflation is running between 3 percent and 4 percent (its historical average). That means your investments are earning only 1 percent at best. 2. INVEST BASED ON YOUR TIME HORIZON Your time horizon is investment-speak for the amount of time you have left until you plan to use the money you're investing. Why is your time horizon important? Because it can affect how well your portfolio can handle the ups and downs of the financial markets. 3. CONSIDER YOUR RISK TOLERANCE

ARTICLE SANDRA L. STOLL, CFP®, AIF PHOTOGRAPHY KEITH SCHNEIDER

Another key factor in your retirement investing decisions is your risk tolerance—basically, how well you can handle a possible investment loss. There are two aspects to risk tolerance. The first is your financial ability to survive a loss. The second aspect of risk tolerance is your emotional ability to withstand the possibility of loss. 4. INTEGRATE RETIREMENT WITH YOUR OTHER FINANCIAL GOALS Think about establishing an emergency fund; it can help you avoid needing to tap your retirement savings before you had planned to. 5. DON'T PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET Diversifying your retirement savings across many different types of investments can help you manage the ups and downs of your portfolio. Different types of investments may face different types of risk.
