KIDS AND PETS ISSUE Savor the last days of Summer As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sports routines and schedules. The summers tend to feel like they fly by faster the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. And while, by the time August rolls around, returning to the routine of school is often a welcomed relief, it generally feels a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our Golden City - kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. They bring so much joy into our lives, once they enter it, we can’t imagine it without them. I grew up on a farm, and I loved our pets, and all animals for that matter. Our story about the Topeka Round-Up Club got me reminiscing about my childhood. I remember after school, I would grab a bridle and head to the stable. We had two Tennessee Walking Horses. I would saddle them and ride them every day. I lived for those afternoon rides. I absolutely adored those beauties and they taught me a lot about caring for animals and the responsibilities that came with pet ownership. When it comes to kids, I have a confession to make - as much as I loved my pets, I never really had much of a maternal instinct. Having children was never a dream of mine. I did grow up and get married and I have three wonderful boys who have grown into fine men. I cannot imagine my life without them. I also have a step-daughter whom I refer to as my “bonus daughter”. Looking back over the years, I am so happy I was given the privilege of raising them all. While parenthood isn’t always a bed of roses, the amount of joy and pride they bring me now was worth every single struggle. So pamper your pets, kiss your kids, and be sure to make time to enjoy the remainder of the outdoor season. Before we know it the air will be crisp, the leaves will be falling and we will be celebrating Thanksgiving and wondering where all the pools, parades, and popsicles went.

Adopting a child is the answer to many couples’ dreams, and Lisa Williams-McCallum of Adoption Services and Law Group, has helped hundreds of families nationwide make these dreams a reality. “Besides myself, there are several adoptees in my family so focusing my practice on this area of the law just made sense,” she says. “I took an adoption law class at Washburn Law School and my professor was adoption attorney, Allan Hazlett. I knew right away what I wanted to practice.” In addition to traditional infant adoption, Lisa says her firm also does stepparent, relative, adult, and foster care adoptions. “I have worked with families to create guardianships, conservatorships - anything that deals with the care and custody of children.” With Lisa’s assistance, David Grantham and Chris Noack are today the loving parents of two boys, Bentley, 10, and Zachary, 8. Zachary’s adoption by David was finalized in September of 2014. Because he and Chris were not yet married (same sex marriage was not legal in Kansas at that time), Chris would have to wait to officially adopt him. Bentley had already been in their lives for much longer. “We became involved with Bentley when he was 6 weeks old, but his private adoption took longer, and he was adopted in June of 2015, nine months after Zachary,” says David. Zachary, who was born at 25 weeks gestation and only weighed 754 grams, had a host of medical issues, but

today he is a happy and healthy boy. “At just 19 months apart, the two boys have always been very close brothers,” adds David. “I carry the insurance for the family, and it was suggested because of that, I be the adoptive parent,” says David. “In Kansas today, same-sex couples have to be married for both people to be able to adopt and that was not an option for us at that time.” The couple married in February of this year, on their 35th anniversary, and Chris then adopted both boys on June 3, 2022. “We brought Zach home from the hospital on June 3, 2014, and ironically, on June 3, 2022, I became his and Bentley’s official adopted father.” They are both so thankful for Lisa, who took care of everything from background investigations to document preparation. “She is very knowledgeable and has a lot

of compassion,” says Chris. “She made the process very seamless and carried the weight.” He adds, “She advocates for the child in every circumstance, and that has also been demonstrated by her work as a Guardian ad Litem for hundreds of kids through the Shawnee County Court system. Her plate is never too full when it comes to a child.” While an adoption agency pairs expectant parents with people looking to adopt, a law firm ensures the adoption is legally secure. “You don’t think to turn to an attorney to begin your family building journey, but adoption is a pretty nuanced area of law,” says Lisa. Lisa also assists expectant parents decide if adoption is the right thing for their baby. “An unplanned pregnancy can be a difficult time in a woman’s life - it is a true act of selflessness to place your baby for adoption. My job is to help make that decision making process as easy as possible and help this mother find her child their forever family.” At the urging of her adoptive mother and son, she found her own birth mother in 2019. “She and my mom have become very good friends,” says Lisa. “They talk regularly and have a lot in common. I now have a large extended family in South Carolina and Georgia and even a cousin who lives in Wichita; he and I are quite close. My son lives in Chicago and my aunt, my birth mother's sister, lives a few blocks from him. Overall, it has been a positive experience.”

Once an adoption is complete, Lisa is still available to help as needed. “She knows how to guide a conversation where the kids are concerned because they all start asking questions at some point,” says Chris. “She directs us on the right path with answers and is a very good female role model for the boys.” “She’s very inclusive and it doesn't matter to her what your family nucleus is - whether you’re single, two females or two males, or from any ethnic background - it doesn't matter to her,” says David. As more people seek out natural remedies and products for themselves, they also want to provide the same alternatives to their pets. The office staff knows the patient by name and also follows that belief in personal, one-on-one interaction. “We have an incredible staff with many years of experience who have stuck with me for multiple years,” Cassidy says. “I’ve got one employee who has been with me and my dad for 37 years. Another has been around 18 years, and some others have been with me for 4 to 6 years, but they’ve been in the business for over 20 years. I feel very, very blessed that I’ve been able to retain the staff I’ve got because I think longevity helps. It breeds familiarity with the office and the confidence of

the patients. We all really do believe in our core mission of a personal touch for everything.” Cassidy is a second-generation orthodontist. He grew up around his father’s practice, which started in 1972, and spent time working in the lab. After receiving a Bachelor of Economics degree from the University of Kansas, he went to dental school at the University of Iowa. Once Cassidy obtained his Doctorate of Dental Surgery, he went to the University of Tennessee for his orthodontic residency and Master of Science in Orthodontics degree. In 1996, Cassidy joined his father’s practice in Topeka. He bought the business in 2002, and his father eventually retired in 2007. “I feel very honored and privileged,” he says about carrying on the family tradition. “It’s fun when you look back, and it has been 50 years of somebody with the name Cassidy doing orthodontics in this day and age when you don’t get that very often.” Cassidy is a tremendous champion of Topeka as a place to build a career and raise a family. His wife of 30 years, Marcy, is Superintendent of Schools in Burlingame. Since their two grown sons are off living CONTINUED >

their lives, the couple shares their home with French bulldogs Fiona and Petunia. One of Cassidy’s great passions is the Mulvane Art Museum. He serves as a board member and was co-chair of this year’s art fair. He also is an active member of Grace Episcopal Cathedral, where he ushers and sings in the choir. Professionally, Cassidy gives back to the community through three organizations. He provides treatment through the Marion Clinic at a reduced price. He donates orthodontic services through Donated Orthodontic Services and the Kansas City-based Smiles Change Lives, which offers low-cost braces to families who can’t afford the entire cost. Providing these services is important to Dr. Cassidy because he knows how a lovely smile can increase a child’s self-confidence. “When you meet somebody for the first time, you see their smile,” he says. “You greet each other with a smile. And if you have a nice-looking smile, it begins the conversation better. Studies show that when you meet people and the have a nice healthy smile, it instills confidence in that person. We can provide orthodontic care for all our patients to really, really increase their self-confidence.” Seeing the transformation in a person’s smile is what Dr. Cassidy finds most rewarding about his work. TOPEKA ROUND-UP CLUB From its humble beginnings in 1937 when a small group of men who enjoyed horseback riding, roping, and coyote hunting decided to form a goat-roping club, Topeka Round-Up Club has always been about social connections. From horse shows to riding lessons to summer camps, that community spirit lives on in the people who belong to the club and work there too. Topeka Round-Up Club is unique in that it is not owned by any one individual or corporation. Instead it is a not-for-profit Kansas corporation owned by its members. Maybe that’s what makes it so special. Barn Manager, Jolene Johnson started working there about a year and a half ago. She needed a place to board her horse and heard that they were looking for a barn manager. “I ran an office for 15 years,” she said. “I figured, I can run a barn…WAY different!” she laughed. Caring for the 55 or so horses is a full-time job, but a labor of love for Johnson. “Besides raising kids and grandkids,” she shared, “it’s the best thing I’ve ever done!” The 300-acre facility, located at 7843 SW 37th Street, offers both English (hunter/ jumper/dressage) and Western riding lessons, and hosts special events throughout the year, including horse shows, trail rides, summer camps, potluck dinners, picnics, educational programs, and more. The staff and board of directors meet once a month to decide what needs to be done. Western riding trainer, Keelan Walter, who

has been training horses since she was a teenager, agreed that the Topeka Round-Up Club is unique. “It’s the only stable in the area managed by its members. It allows people to come in, contribute their own ideas and really have a stake in the place,” she said. “Everyone adds their own flavor.” She has been working at the club for four years with riders of all ages. She said the riders really learn a lot about themselves working with the animals. “Riding is a very positive experience,” she added. “It’s a real confidence builder.” Brenna Mannell, board treasurer, got involved after her daughter started taking English riding lessons there. “Haley didn’t really like traditional sports, but she fell in love with riding immediately,” she said. “I was there with her all the time, so I decided to volunteer. It’s such a great group of people, I wanted to be a part of it. The members really make the place go.” In addition to riding, Haley also works part time at the barn feeding, watering, cleaning stalls, and helping with other horse and facility needs. “It’s just a great environment, Brenna continued. “I love seeing Haley spend time with her horse every day, take responsibility for all his needs and watching them grow and develop together. It’s been an amazing experience.” Another board member, Debbie Haag, whose daughter Savannah has been riding for about 12 years at Topeka Round-Up Club, said, “I know it’s an expensive sport, but my husband and I

feel like the things it teaches them - responsibility, attention to detail, organization, independence - just can’t be compared to other sports.” Savannah is boarding three horses now and is at the club multiple times a day. “It teaches you about taking care of another living being. You have to be dedicated and organized. I have two horses who are recovering from injuries, so I have to exercise them multiple times a day,” she said. “I also have to make sure I feed each of them special grain for their gut or their hooves or whatever they need. It’s a lot of work, but I love it!” Gavin Badger has been taking Western riding lessons for six years. He also works at the club taking care of the horses and teaching young kids at summer camp. “It’s amazing how a 1,000 pound animal will let you ride and train them and be so calm and gentle,” he said.

These recipes feature kid-favorite flavors with an added taste twist. The only tricky part is waiting for them to freeze.

KIDS AND POPSICLES ARE THE PERFECT SUMMERTIME PAIR

CHERRY LIMEADE POPSICLES ingredients: Makes 18 to 24 • 2 cups sugar • 2 cups water • 1 cup lime juice • 2 cups tart cherry juice

directions: In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat. Add the cherry juice and taste. Add additional sugar or water if needed. Let come to room temperature and then refrigerate until well chilled. Pour mixture into popsicle molds. Freeze until firm.

SPICED GRAPE POPSICLES ingredients: Makes 18 to 24 • 2 quarts Concord grape juice • 1/2 cup sugar • 12 whole cloves • 4 cinnamon sticks • 3 tablespoons whole allspice

directions: Put all of the ingredients into a large saucepan. Bring the mixture to barely a simmer and let it cook for 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and pour the juice through a cheesecloth- lined strainer into a bowl or pitcher to remove the spices. Allow the juice to cool to room temperature, and then refrigerate until well chilled. Pour mixture into popsicle molds. Freeze until firm.

Pickleball The Preposterously Popular Pastime That Has Nothing to Do with Pickles ARTICLE BY KELSEY HUBER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY THOMAS HALL If you haven’t heard of pickleball, you will! It’s the fun new sport taking over the world. Well, okay, maybe not the world, but it’s sure getting popular here in the U.S. Pickleball, it seems, is as fun and friendly as its name implies. According to the website usapickleball.org/what-is-pickleball/histor y-ofthe-game, the game was invented by congressman Joel Pritchard, Barney McCallum, and Bill Bell in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, WA. Many people wonder about the origin of the name. Joan Pritchard, Joel’s wife, named the new sport. The University of Washington had a top-tier rowing program.

The regattas pit the best teams against each other. Afterward, the leftover “spares” from multiple universities competed in a just-for-fun “pickle boat” race. She thought the new game combined bits of other games and decided that ‘Pickle Ball’ was an appropriate name. Topeka native Eldonna Coats is the USA Pickleball Kansas District Ambassador. She started playing pickleball 15 years ago. After volunteering to promote the addictive sport in Topeka, she then expanded to the district level, and now covers the entire state. “It’s a fun game,” she said. “Once you start, you don’t want to quit. Over the last five years, I’ve taught over 400 people to play.” CONTINUED >

Coats, who met her husband on the pickleball court 12 years ago, says part of the reason the sport is so popular is its social appeal. “During open play, you meet lots of people as you rotate. The courts are smaller (roughly a third the size of a tennis court), so there’s plenty of opportunity to interact.” Coats’ friend, Susan Hoge, Pickleball Coordinator at SportZone in Topeka, confirms the sport’s addictiveness. “Eldonna and I played softball together,” Hoge shared. “She introduced me to pickleball, and I was just immediately hooked!” She says the pickleball community is a friendly group. “You can show up anywhere in the country, and just ask to join in and people will tell you how it works and include you in the community.” Hoge said she and her husband planned a road trip to meet their kids and grandkids in Panama City Beach and stopped at pickleball courts along the way to play. Facebook communities make it easy to locate groups and see schedules. “It’s like having ready-made friends in every city!” she laughed. Making new friends is one of the fringe benefits of pickleball. “Playing pickleball has led to a lot of other social offshoots,” said Hoge. “We have formed other groups with friends we’ve met through pickleball. My husband has a group of guys and gals who go on bike rides and we are part of a bocce ball group and a group that plays cards as well.” So how did this mash-up of tennis, pingpong, and badminton get so popular? “It started with the retired crowd,” Coats said. “Then the younger segment stepped in.” Games are short and quick, so there’s time for interaction. The rules are easy to learn and all ages can play. “I’ve seen a grandma and grandson playing,” Coats said. “My mother learned to play at 81!” There’s really no limit to its mass appeal. The rules may be fairly easy to learn, but don’t assume it can’t get competitive. While most play on a recreational level, Coats says there are two professional

pickleball leagues. In fact, Wichita boasts four of the top-ranked players in the world! The cost of entry is low. “All you need is a good pair of shoes, a paddle and a couple of balls,” Coats said. “And you can play year round with indoor courts.” If you’re interested in learning how to play, Hughes Courts (725 SW Orleans in Topeka) offers free beginner lessons at 6:00 pm every Wednesday through Labor Day (weather permitting). Players can usually follow up lessons with a beginners round robin on Saturdays as well.
