KANSAS
SUPREME COURT IN 1995. Before her passing at the age of 80 in 2015, her dream was to leave behind a legacy of beauty and contemplation for the people of Kansas and for all who visited the Topeka Zoo. “Kay’s preferences really leaned towards plants, rocks, water and koi, and the more we talked the more we learned that these are all tenets of a Japanese garden,” says Brendan Wiley, director of the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center. “She wanted a beautiful experience that needed to be serene, where a person could contemplate. That was a powerful notion to her. That idea that you needed to go to a serene place where your mind can truly reflect and contemplate.”

The Kay E. McFarland Living Trust, a permanent
endowment fund, was established to pay for the costs of the garden and for improvements to the zoo. Along with Brendan, good friends of the late chief justice, Howard and Elaine Schwartz, oversee the trust.
“She was able to see some really fantastic gardens all over the U.S. as well as in Vancouver, [Canada], and that experience was something she wanted to bring back to her own state,” says Elaine. Through Brendan, Chief Justice McFarland was able to see for herself the magnificent relationship that the zoo staff had with the animals. “I think that made her feel that she could trust the zoo to do something good with her estate,” adds Elaine. “And when she and Brendan started talking about the garden, that just cemented the deal.”

Visitors are given the option of taking two different pathways. “At the top of the garden, you have a pathway with the seven bridges that’s more difficult to cross, and on the other side is the more flowing, easy going downhill one,” says Elaine. Koji also explained to her that there are five different waterfalls and each one of them has a different sound. “So, if you’re out there contemplating on what’s going on in your life and you hear a different waterfall sound it can speak to you - maybe better than therapy.”
Kay’s Garden was dedicated in August of 2020 after many years of discussion and planning. Garden Master Koji Morimoto helped bring these plans to fruition and when finished, the result was a truly authentic Japanese garden. “One of the unique things about a Japanese garden is that everything is intentional,” says Brendan. “And because they are authentic in nature, there’s no signage in them.” Visitors to the garden, he explains, can download an app for the Topeka Zoo or Kay’s Garden to find out more about the symbolism throughout the garden and to discover the names of the lush plants and colorful flowers. “To the right of the garden entrance, Koji told me that the boulder is there for me to put all of my discontent on so when I walk into the garden, I can experience it without that discontentment, the way the garden should be experienced,” he says.

where people want to come over.”
How do you bring the outdoors into your living space? Here are some tips Stahl suggests:
1. Look at sightlines. Stand at one end of your indoor living space and notice what you can see. That’s where you need to focus. 2. Pick a flow-through paint color to create a cohesive feel. “Pick one simple, neutral color to be the main color throughout the space,” Stahl says. “For example, if the outside of the house is gray, then pick a shade of gray inside. I like our outside and insides to flow because then when we design the spaces, it’s easier. We’re dealing with the same main color to build on.” 3. Choose warm or cool color groups, or pick three colors you’ll use in varying hues and textures. Stahl notes, “People ask me lots about color because that’s their biggest worry. What if I get it wrong? If you get yourself dressed in the morning, you can do color.” Stahl also recommends colors and styles tied to the natural elements of earth, wood, air, and water. “We feel the most at home when we can bring nature into our lives,” she says. 4. Analogous colors, which are adjacent on the color wheel, create a calm feeling, while complementary colors across the wheel create contrast. For example, calming blue, green, and purple are together on the wheel. If you want a little excitement, pick a complementary color to go with them, such as orange or yellow. “You want to feel yourself,” she says. “How do you want to feel? Once you pick your color families, those are what’s going to flow and make everything tie from the inside to out.” 5. Accent colors can pull the space together. “While the base colors stay the same, the accent colors in accessories can change for the seasons or feelings,” Stahl says. 6. Textiles like rugs, sofas, pillows, and blankets, or anything soft, will absorb sound, giving both indoor and outside spaces a more cozy, homey feel. Finally, Stahl advises, “It’s less about looking like a magazine and more about supporting the life you want to live.” CityLifestyle.com/Topeka

BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK Bryce Canyon National Park, located in southwestern Utah, is home to the world’s largest concentration of hoodoos on Earth. With its fascinating landscape composed of hoodoos, horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters and whimsical limestone rock formations, a visit to Bryce Canyon is often likened to a visit to another planet. This stunning landscape, formed by wind, water and snow, draws hikers, rock climbers, photographers, stargazers and cross-country skiers.
5.
GLACIER NATIONAL PARK Glacier National Park is located on the border of Canada and the United States and is often referred to as the “Crown of the Continent.” Visitors will find more than 700 glacial lakes and many hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to strenuous. Going-to-the-Sun Road, known as one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the country, is a paved, two-lane highway that divides the park into east and west regions.
6. ZION NATIONAL PARK Zion National Park’s colorful sandstone cliffs, lush plateaus covered in pine and junipers, narrow canyons, the Virgin River, plus seeps, springs and waterfalls are just some of the scenic wonders here. One of Zion’s most popular hikes is known as the Narrows, the slimmest section of Zion Canyon. Other popular attractions include the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, Angels Landing, Observation Point and Canyon Overlook Trail. CityLifestyle.com/Topeka

ceiling fans can really make a statement! Here are three ceiling fan designs that will help you put your own spin on any room. TIP: Don’t forget to switch the direction your blades turn for the seasons. In the summer, make sure they turn counterclockwise quickly so the air blows downward and you feel the cool breeze. In the winter, set them to turn clockwise slowly so they create an updraft, thus redistributing the warm air that naturally rises and accumulates near the ceiling. Use your ceiling fans to your advantage and you can turn your thermostat up a few degrees in the summer and down in the winter and stay comfortable while reducing energy use.
Modern Modern ceiling fans are a designer’s best friend. These sleek designs can disappear into the ceiling and still cool a room on a hot July day. The understated industrial look is perfect for a loft or smaller room.
Traditional Traditional ceiling fans will stand the test of time. With plenty of stylish options and a wide array of finishes, you’re sure to find the perfect complement to any decor.

A Summer Activity from Topeka Collegiate Encourage your child to continue learning throughout the summer by helping them start their own field journal! Inspired by Charles Darwin’s meticulous notes and love of nature, this hands-on activity is a great way to encourage curiosity and critical thinking throughout the summer months.
Step 1:
Gather your supplies. If you want to keep it simple, all you’ll need is a notebook and pencil. Other items you may want to consider: a camera, magnifying glass, measuring tape and/or colored pencils.
Step 2:
Go outside and take an observation! Find a living organism, make a sketch of your specimen, and begin taking notes. Does your specimen have the ability to move? How so? What does it eat? Does it make any sounds? How large is it? If you are able to touch your specimen, how does it feel? Any other notable features? Answer these questions in your journal.
Step 3:
After taking your observations, go back inside and begin your research. Identify the species, find additional photos, and determine the following: complete taxonomy, habitat, diet, range (regions where it typically lives) and other fun facts.
Step 4: Pull it all together! Write one to two paragraphs summarizing what you
learned about your specimen. Take a moment to celebrate whatever it is that makes this specimen unique and interesting!
