LIVING ON SMITH LAKE TIME ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BENNHOFF PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Hot summers and mild winters (mostly!), along with plenty of rain to keep water levels high, make the South an ideal region for enjoying lake life. Only 145 miles from Franklin sits Alabama’s Lewis Smith Lake, commonly called “Smith Lake,” rated the second-cleanest lake in the country besides Lake Tahoe. Smith Lake is fed by small rivers that run through rural areas. It reaches a depth of 300 feet and most channels are 100 feet deep, making the lake cleaner and cooler. Melinda Edwards, a realtor with Lake Homes Realty, grew up on a 100-acre lakeside farm and has lived there all her life. “My granddaddy was a farmer and although land was hard to afford for him, he bought land prior to the lake being formed, and with the creation of the lake, he provided a wonderful place for generations to enjoy.” Melinda wants others to experience the Smith Lake she feels blessed to have. “There’s nothing like seeing the lake from my bed first thing in the morning and watching nature from my deck as I sip a cup of coffee. It’s hard to explain how nice it is until you get here,” she continues. The lake comprises 22,000 acres with over 500 miles of shoreline. “There’s so much to do year-round. In the summer we have boating, jet skis, kayaking, all the water sports, fishing tournaments for large-mouth bass, crappie – over 70 species of fish!”

Winter is perfect for hiking and viewing wildlife – migrating pelicans and ducks, blue herons, protected turtles. “After a day in the sun it’s fun to sit by the fire for weenie roasts and s’mores,” Melinda says. About half of Lake Homes Realty clients come from Franklin, and buyers from other states are also snapping up properties. Franklin residents Mindy & Chris Morrison recently purchased a lake cabin for their family. “We love the cliffs, clean water and friendly people. It truly feels like a community,” Mindy says. “We have many interesting newcomers arriving in the area,” says Melinda. Some are buying ‘legacy homes’ to pass down to children. The better lots start at $100,000 and homes currently go up to $4.5 million. Lake Homes Realty, under team leader Justin Dyar – aka “Mr. Smith Lake” – produced over $300 million in sales in 2022. “Some buyers are joining with another family to purchase properties. That’s a way to afford a second home and split the costs,” says Melinda. One advantage to owning a lake house instead of a beach house is the savings on insurance. “We don’t have hurricanes and floods, as long as you’re not in a flood zone,” she says, “and I believe once you spend time here, it becomes part of your soul.”

1. The 8,000 sq. ft. stunner has 7 bedrooms and 7.5 baths, garage space for 5 cars, state-of-the-art security system, a bunk room, and custom finishes throughout. $3,900,000 2. This brand new construction with saltwater infinity pool sits on a point with breathtaking views up the channel. 3. Built in 2022, the 5-bed 4-bath home is in the exclusive Bear Pen community, one of the most desirable sections on the entire lake! $1,650,000 4. This stunning craftsman home comes with a double-slip boathouse floating on year-round water. ARE YOU THINKING OF BUYING A SECOND HOME?

+| 2.

Melinda offers the following ideas to consider:

Will you be renting out the home? “The rental market around Smith Lake has really taken off,” says Melinda. “Be sure and choose a neighborhood that allows rentals, including through VRBO and Airbnb. Rental income can help cover your mortgage!”

+| If your second home is more than a summer place, choose one with year-round water access. Reservoir lakes like Smith Lake have lower pools in the wintertime, with water levels managed by Alabama Power.

+| 3.

Hire a property manager to look after your home when you’re not there. “Smith Lake has several concierge service companies that will check on your house and your dock and manage maintenance needs for their clients,” says Melinda.

+| Work with a local realtor who understands the region’s water access and levels, knows where the flood zones are located, understands dock permitting and access, and who can recommend the best maintenance teams to help with your plumbing, HVAC and other home care needs. 4. BUILDING A F O U N DAT I O N F O R YO U N G MEN IN TENNESSEE ADVA N C E CA MP USA

ARTICLE BY JESSICA WAYMAN

16

LOCA L’S CH OICE | L IFE + CULTURE

Advance Camp USA is a program new to Tennessee that offers young men from fatherless homes the opportunity to learn practical skills while building relationships with others and with Christ. Chad Wallen, the founder of Advance Camp USA, is the son of a former correctional officer. Growing up, his father explained to him the extremely high number of men in prisons who came from fatherless homes. “My heart has always been in a place of prevention versus recovery,” says Chad. “That’s where the heart of this came from – a place of prevention for young men coming up in our communities without dads.” The first Advance Camp originated in Oregon as an activity for young men whose mothers were involved in the Single Moms Ministries. Chad and his family later moved to Texas and started Advance Camp USA there. Meanwhile, a mentor and friend of Chad’s from Oregon urged him to bring Advance Camp USA to Tennessee. Two or three months after new programs in Oregon and Florida were in motion, Chad was inspired to open up conversations which eventually led to the first Advance Camp USA in Tennessee. “Doors started blowing open,” says Chad. HopeUC Nashville, a church in Thompson’s Station, reached out and expressed how deeply the mission of Advance Camp resonated in their hearts. Advance Camp USA meets in Thompson’s Station, but it sets out to take the campers wherever they need to go to learn. If they’re going to learn how to work on bikes, they go to bike shops. If it’s cars, they go to auto shops. Fishing, they go to the lake. They teach trades, they mentor young men, and they share biblical scripture at lunchtime. True identity is what they want to show them. So many young men struggle with the idea of being genetically predisposed to the behavior of their fathers. They are inclined to believe they

“I T’S A LL A BOUT CRE ATIN G AWARE N E SS TO FA LL O N TO T H E RI GHT HEA RTS AN D IN TO THE RIG HT HAN D S .”

will naturally follow in their footsteps. Advance Camp pushes back against that and helps them to discover an identity all on their own. If you ask Chad what Advance Camp’s biggest need is, the answer is not money – it’s awareness. Through awareness, everything else finds its way to them. When people hear about Advance Camp and what they offer to young men, sometimes they offer a donation. But just as importantly, they may offer their time as a mentor or their teaching skills as a professional of one of the trades they want the men to learn. An average camp hosts between twelve and fifteen young men at a time. Right now, the camps take place once every quarter, but as the program grows, it will hopefully reach a schedule of every other month or even every month. Currently, there are 26 Advance Camps throughout the year, and Chad flies to nearly all of them himself to host the program. The next Advance Camp USA in Thompson’s Station is scheduled for this April. Registration is available up until the week before camp. Those interested may find more information and register at AdvanceCampUSA.com

Chad Wallen, originally from Oregon, now lives in Granbury, Texas with his wife Kelsey and their three daughters. He and his family have fostered 15 children over the course of eight years. His passion is changing the trajectory of the lives of fatherless young men.

RIVERSTONE POOLS HAS BECOME A FORMIDABLE PLAYER IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE’S MOST LUXURIOUS BACKYARDS

20

C UR B A P P E A L | HOM E + DE S I GN

Like a cannonball off the high dive, Riverstone Pools is making quite a splash in Middle Tennessee’s residential pool market. From Columbia to Gallatin, and Dickson to Nolensville, the locally owned outfit has designed and built about 100 pools in a little more than two years, according to company co-founder, Jason Grieco. “With so many people moving into the Nashville area, there has been, and continues to be, a strong demand for residential swimming pools,” says Grieco. “Many families are moving here from colder parts of the country and they want that backyard experience for their kids. But we serve a lot of longtime residents who have decided that a pool would be a great addition to their home.” Grieco and his wife, Courtney, formed the company along with their friend and neighbor, AJ Steynberg, in 2020. Their inspiration came from watching another neighbor’s not-so-pleasant experience with a pool contractor. “A job

that should’ve taken one month, ended up taking seven months,” says Grieco. “The crews would come over, work an hour, and leave. There was little communication and their yard was left in a messy condition. That’s when AJ and I started talking. We saw an opportunity to do things differently and went to work.” Grieco obtained his contractor’s license, assembled a team, and Riverstone Pools dove in headfirst. With finance and accounting degrees in hand, hands-on pool construction experience, and years of service with established and startup businesses, Grieco was up to the task. He had worked as a CPA before joining his family’s retail pet store business. When that enterprise was sold to a national chain in 2015, Grieco was retained to manage the transition. “We stood up 60 stores in two weeks, then added 100 more in two years,” he says. “I was tasked with everything from leasing to buildout, staffing and banking. To do that, we had to put together teams that were competent and efficient.” Those skills and experiences have transferred over to Riverstone Pools where no two jobs are identical. It begins with the type of pool itself: fiberglass or gunite (concrete). “Fiberglass pools are fabricated off-site then transported to your home where they’re installed,” says Grieco. “Gunite is shot through a high-pressure hose onto a custom-built frame that’s installed in the hole that’s been dug. If there are no issues, fiberglass pools can be completed in a about a month. You’re somewhat limited in terms of design but fiberglass pools have come a long way. We’ve put some in some tight spots. We’ll crane everything in, go straight over the house, and drop the pool into its location.”

The Grieco Family

“With gunite pools, your design options are virtually limitless. The world is your oyster. But the process is slower and can take three to six months, depending on the complexity of the job.” Pool sizes vary greatly. A cold plunge pool, which is primarily for therapeutic purposes, can accommodate one-to-four people at a depth of three feet. A common size for a small pool is 20 x 10. The largest fiberglass pool available is 40 x 16. Depths range from nine inches on a tanning ledge to eight feet, which is required for a diving board. Pools can also be heated for year-round use. The entry level price is about $80,000 with the average fiberglass pool running about $125,000. About 25 percent of project expense goes into the deck. “We include four feet of swept concrete around the pool, so you don’t have to spend a lot of extra money on a deck if you don’t want to,” says Grieco. “But we do build some elaborate decks and hardscapes with waterfalls, firepits, walled spaces and pool houses. Some jobs run up to $1 million. Basically, anything outside the house we can do.” About 100 splash-happy families agree. RiverstonePools.com

Clean Is Cool Nate Bargatze's Wholesome Path To Success ARTICLE BY JOE WEST | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANIELLE DEL VALLE @ THE BOBBY HOTEL, MAKEUP BY MERCY ANDERSON As Nate Bargatze prepares to embark on his most expansive year of comedy to date, he’s proving overand-over that his style of wholesome comedy is without a doubt, cool and trending. If you haven’t come across Nate this past calendar year, you’re certainly in the minority. He’s been making the rounds on late night television, clips from his performances are going viral on social media, he’s the host of his own podcast, Nateland, and has multiple stand-up comedy specials across streaming services.

When he’s not entertaining arena-sized audiences, he’s also dabbling in acting. Sure, there are a few other comedians with a similar resume, but it’s Nate’s brand that sets him apart from most others. Nate is known for his observational humor, storytelling and southern charm. What some may not have noticed is his comedy is not opinionated, it’s not political, and it's certainly not risqué. “This is the comedy I want to do,” he says. “When you’re a clean comic, you don’t really want people to CONTINUED >

"I think sometimes clean comedy has a stigma and I don’t think it has to. I think you can make clean comedy cool.”

think about it. That’s the goal. I like when people don’t even realize I’m clean and I also like when people are there because I’m clean.” Nate says his style wasn’t a conscious decision. “Luckily, I started this way,” he says. “It’s just how my brain works. I think sometimes clean comedy has a stigma and I don’t think it has to. I think you can make clean comedy cool.” Raised in Old Hickory, Tennessee, Nate is one of the few touring comedians who appear to adhere to a strict clean brand of show despite the lewder approach to comedy by some of his peers. He doesn’t hold judgement against others, having partnered with many comedians with different styles. “On the Nateland podcast I introduce a lot of other comics,” he says. “When they are with me, they are clean, even if they are not always clean outside my shows. I don’t make anyone do anything. This is just what I do.” That doesn’t prevent him from wondering if he should be mimicking some of those styles. “I remind myself that I don’t think that’s what I’m being called to do,” he says. "I'm called to be entertaining." Nate takes pride knowing his comedy can bring the whole family together and appeals to all. “I have a 10-year-old and there’s not a lot you can do with them anymore.” He says it’s nice when the family can do something together and compares it to some of his own experiences growing up. “[Comedy] was such a big deal. Going with your family and a kid seeing their dad laugh really hard. I remember how great it is and how great it feels. You just want to recreate that for people.”

It’s working. Nate’s comedy and his career certainly have momentum, and he continues to churn out great material. His third hour-long stand-up special called Hello World dropped on Amazon Prime earlier this year. “I feel really good about this last special,” he says. “You never think you’re going to come up with something else. Every single time, [I question] how am I ever going to come up with something new. There’s nothing else to talk about, but you just have to trust you’re going to find something.” Hello World was taped in Phoenix, Arizona as an ‘in-the-round’ performance where the audience sits 360-degrees around the stage. “I love in-the-round,” he says. “I don’t move a lot and it makes you move and be a little more animated.” Nate will be performing a similar show at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on April 15. This will be his largest show ever and will be in front of a home crowd. As the audiences continue to grow, connecting with fans can become even more challenging, especially in venues that have multiple seating tiers. “I try to make it feel like I’m talking to each person individually,” he says. “But I’m hoping everyone is connecting with each other. You’re all laughing together, with the people next to you, and that’s the bond.” Asked if there is additional pressure performing in front of a local crowd as opposed to other venues around the country, Nate replies, “Everybody’s here. It’s different in that sense. You’re doing the same act. Maybe I reference Nashville more being from here, but I want everything to be more perfect.

“It’s home. I remember handing out flyers in New York on the sidewalks to get five minutes of stage time at the end of the night at one o’clock in the morning in front of four people. As I’m out there in the freezing cold in New York, I remember thinking if I could get to Bridgestone it would be crazy, but you don’t really think you can get there.” Nate won’t find himself in the position of having to hand out flyers for his shows any time soon. His tour last year was his largest ever and 2023 sets up to be even bigger. He’s fully booked coast-to-coast until June and then will begin his first European tour later this year. Sometimes Opportunity Knocks

Sometimes You Have To Create Your Own Opportunities ARTICLE BY KAREN CREASON PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRENTON LEE PHOTOGRAPHY

O UT D OOR LIV IN G | HOME + DE S I GN

Fifteen years ago, Charles Darby’s parents gave him sage advice: Take what you have and build what you want and need. His parents' joy and love for helping people set the standard for how Charles wanted to live his life. “I did not want a job - I wanted a way of life.” Charles’ passion for landscaping aligned perfectly with his personal value system. Landscaping affords him the opportunity to work and live close to his family, while helping others. Charles began his landscaping journey by working for a successful landscaping company. Determined to succeed, he did what his boss did and learned much in the process. Ambitious, young, self-motivated and comfortable with knowledge gained, Charles branched out on his own and launched Opportunity Landscapes and Nursery in 2012. Aptly named Opportunity Landscapes and Nursery “because I knew if I was given the opportunity I would supersede expectations with my ability.” Charles obtained his business license and started to beat the bushes. In his first week, he landed his first job which paid the equivalent of three months’ salary of his former job. He then struggled through a three-month drought. Not one to lose focus, Charles took all the outdoor jobs no one wanted

to do, both challenging and mundane. “I trusted that growth of the company would happen organically and soon I would be utilizing my skills for enhancing outdoor properties.” It took time to earn the respect of vendors, the industry, and clients. As his unique design skills and outstanding quality in landscape and hardscape installation became known, Charles started receiving multiple referrals. It is through passion for his landscape career that Charles can envision the future of plant and tree growth potential and thus provide the client with a broad range of choices. Charles states “I visualize the clients project in three, five, and ten years and can provide guidance on how to create a full and lush landscape and avoid the common landscape mistake of plant or tree overgrowth. Planting in layers with different textures can create a stunning and tranquil environment adding property value, while allowing the client the enjoyment of outdoor living.” The Opportunity Landscapes and Nursery approach is based on feeling, emotion, respect and obedience to nature. “Nature is our gift. She provides us with everything and sometimes we don’t appreciate it.” So many look from their windows at “dead” features - walls, fences, bricks and streets. life. Much like people, landscape comes in different colors, sizes and shapes. They both live and grow, get transplanted, adapt, take root and continue to grow. Charles sees his strengths as “doing the job, leading the team, accountability, and overseeing the quality of our work. I have exceedingly high and exacting standards.” He loves that he can shine a light on others. “I want to give my workers the opportunity to be the star I know they can be.” Charles has created a motivating work environment where opportunities abound. His team is dedicated. “I will, and have, taken a good person over a good worker. I can train a good person to work but I cannot train a good worker to be a good person.” Business has grown through referrals and that means a lot to Charles. “I would rather have the respect of others than a million dollars.” So valued as a leader in the

industry, Charles is asked to consult on projects and to advise, teach and help others in the profession. Opportunity Landscapes and Nursery was recently named by Trees.com to the 2022 Top 20 Best Gardening and Landscaping Services in Nashville placing them above longer-established businesses. Charles states, “My goal is to continue the career that I love while leading the company to greater successes. Our new lifestyles demand outdoor property beautification - Opportunity Landscapes and Nursery can make that happen.” Feeling very fortunate in the choices made, Charles states, ”I am always fulfilled and feel thankful and honored by the opportunities I have been given to enrich the lives of many – just by planting a tree.” OpportunityLandscapesAndNursery.com

TRANSFORMING OLD STORAGE SPACES INTO NEW LIVING AREAS

38

H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E SE RVI CE S

Make Over Your Garage With Style Home improvement is a never-ending process. New designs, improved materials, repurposed space – all these things and more can add style and value to the family home. Since homebuilding began, there have been several improvement projects which have proven to be particularly popular with homeowners across the country. Closet upgrades, bathroom retrofits and kitchen redesigns top the list, with each improvement known to increase home utility and resale value. However, despite the wide range of remodeling projects, one area of the home seems to have often been overlooked – the garage. Traditionally, most garages have been relegated to just being places to park vehicles and to store tools and outdoor equipment. Recently, garages have begun to receive much needed attention from remodelers and homeowners. Spawned in part by the “man cave” and “she shed” trends, the humble vehicle storage area has found a new lease in life. Indeed, today’s garages are increasingly being transformed into extended living areas. While storage remains the dominant use for the space, it is now storage with style. “Although the trend is a relatively recent phenomenon for many homeowners, we have actually been doing garage remodeling projects since 2000,” says Sandra Sokol, owner of Closets by Design of Nashville, Middle Tennessee’s leader in optimized storage solutions. After spending years viewing garages through the filter of vehicle and tool storage, many homeowners are unaware of the many different design options available for space transformation.

“Most redesign projects begin with the installation of custom cabinets,” says Sandra. “In our factory in Franklin, we manufacture our own cabinetry, including tall floor units, work benches, upper storage bins and rolling cabinets. By building our own cabinets, we can ensure that they are perfect dimensions for each garage.” One of Closet by Design’s most popular cabinetry lines is their proprietary Silver II collection. “The Silver II cabinets and accessories are crafted in black- and silver-colored materials,” says Sandra. “The modern color scheme coupled with special finishes give the Silver II line a sleek, industrial appearance, which is perfect for many customer garages.” Along with cabinet replacement, Closets by Design also offers other storage upgrades, including their Design Wall coverings, which provide additional hardware and accessories for storing yard, gardening, sport and leisure items. They can also provide custom garage flooring solutions for further enhancing garage appearance and utility. Homeowners seeking to upgrade their garages are often uncertain as to how to begin their projects. Fortunately, Sandra and her team make the process simple and painless. “We begin every project by providing an in-home assessment during which we will discuss customer preferences and options,” says Sandra. “Subsequently, we will measure, design and price the project – all during the same appointment. If the client is ready to move forward, we will complete the contracts and assign an installation date at the same time.”

As with all Closets by Design projects, customers are involved from start to finish. “We want our clients to be fully involved in the design and pricing process,” says Sandra. “We encourage them to pick and choose all options, which enables them to establish their own budgets. All in all, it is a very comfortable and fun process for both our clients and our designers.” To prepare for the project implementation, homeowners will need to temporarily clean out their garages of any boxes, tubs and other items taking up storage space. These items can be returned to the garage as soon as the cabinet and/or flooring installation is complete, which usually takes just one day. Depending upon the size and complexity of the project, most projects can go from approval to completion within just a few weeks. Immediately thereafter, homeowners can begin to enjoy the storage and increased home value arising from their upgraded garage. Nashville.ClosetsByDesign.com
