February 2023 PUBLISHER

Maria Dinoia | maria.dinoia@citylifestyle.com

WOW! I cannot believe it has been one year since our first issue of Thompson’s Station Lifestyle - also serving parts of Spring Hill! With the holidays and new year celebrations behind us (as well as hopefully the crazy cold weather), our February issue is dedicated to Love Local. We spoke with local residents and parents Alicia and David Seaton of Hidden Bee Farm about how their animal rescue is helping their son and, in turn, is helping others. We visited with Rebecca Stilwell at Spring Hill Antique Mall and Chelsea Howell at Children’s Ballet Theatre who is helping her young dancers learn about life and selfless giving. Read about the unexpected way in which local Realtor and RE/MAX Encore Broker/Owner Kristin Pendergraft explores our beautiful community and beyond. Speaking of beauty, we introduce you to Aerin Lauder, granddaughter of Estée Lauder. She will be the keynote speaker at the Nashville Antiques and Garden Show speaking on beauty, home and entertaining. While we teeter between the chill of winter and the excitement of spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. It has been an honor and privilege to showcase the wonderful people, places and businesses in and around Thompson’s Station and Spring Hill and I look forward to another great year! Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building. Happy February!

Lead A Life Filled With Beauty Add Touches Of Beauty In Every Day With Style Icon Aerin Lauder

ARTICLE BY KELLIE WALTON BENZ | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

For Aerin Lauder, beauty is not only her heritage but also her passion. A designer, tastemaker, style icon and heir to one of the world’s leading beauty moguls, Aerin has been guided by lessons set forth by her grandmother, Estée Lauder. “I worked at Estée Lauder for about 25 years, gaining amazing experience in many different departments,” Aerin shares. “I was always doing interviews on what was in my makeup bag and the items I couldn’t live without. After being asked that question so many times, I felt that there was an opportunity in the marketplace for a lifestyle brand based on feminine, modern and effortless products with strong heritage and storytelling.” Aerin reinterpreted her lifelong lessons in beauty when launching her own lifestyle brand, AERIN. The AERIN brand is based on

the premise that living beautifully should be effortless, offering curated collections spanning beauty, fashion, accessories and home decor. Each collection is inspired by art, travel, fashion and design, with Aerin’s own lifestyle serving as its focal point. “Estée used to say that everything can be beautiful if you take the time, which is very much the concept of my brand today. It is a beauty lifestyle brand, all about attention to detail,” Aerin says. “I am lucky to find inspiration wherever I go. Whether it is through my travels, my home, nature, my friends, family, art, hotels, exhibitions, the list goes on.” The notion that everything can be beautiful through both attention and intention will guide Aerin’s lifestyle lecture at the 2023 Nashville Antiques and Garden Show, taking place February 3—5 at Nashville's Music City CONTINUED >

“There are so many simple ways to enhance the aesthetic of your every day, even at home, which can be accomplished with unique antique finds, luxurious pieces and of course, fresh flowers.”

Center. Beauty is a theme woven throughout the show, in addition to entertaining, gardening and design. Returning for its 33rd year, the show brings together a showcase of antiques from more than 150 dealers, world-class landscaped gardens and educational lectures, panel discussions and book signings. As a keynote speaker, Aerin will address, “The Beauty of Home and Entertaining.” “I love this concept of {Estee's} because it’s all about that idea of using a pretty glass or a beautiful plate every day,” Aerin shares. “You don’t need to save it for a special occasion. There is something so appealing about that because it makes every experience a bit more meaningful. There are so many simple ways to enhance the aesthetic of your every day, even at home, which can be accomplished with unique antique finds, luxurious pieces and of course, fresh flowers.” Aerin believes that the modern woman sees beauty as an extension of herself, her home, her wardrobe and her travels, which is a key takeaway for the AERIN brand and a primary message for February’s show. Incorporating touches of beauty in-home can be as simple as lighting a beautiful candle that transcends to an inspiring destination or adding a statement lighting piece that transforms an entire room. “This concept easily translates into your lifestyle as well, with effortless beauty products and elevated accessories,” adds Aerin. “From a favorite fragrance to a beautiful

cashmere scarf or the perfect overnight bag, these pieces add a luxurious touch to your wardrobe and allow us to bring that element of beauty on-the-go.” Each piece in the AERIN collection, including home decor, clothing and accessories, fragrances, lighting and more, is “curated to make life more beautiful, with a sense of ease and refinement.” Products can be found at select retailers nationwide, or online at AERIN.com. Outside of the office, Aerin cites her most important role as being a mother to her two sons. “Along with the many lessons surrounding business, hard work, passion and drive, most importantly Estée instilled the value of family and spending time with loved ones. This concept is probably the most special of all and laid the foundation for having meaningful priorities and a work-life balance,” shares Aerin. In all things work and family, Aerin draws upon her grandmother’s guidance of maintaining authenticity. “She would say that if you are passionate and true, success will come,” Aerin shares. “I have valued this idea since I was a young girl. Through the years, my goals have ultimately stayed the same – to be authentic to myself and do what I love.” To see Aerin speak on beauty, home and entertaining at the Nashville Antiques and Garden Show or to learn more about the event, visit AntiquesAndGardenShow.com.

Go Beyond Ballet At The Children’s Ballet Theatre ARTICLE BY KELLIE WALTON BENZ PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

22

K I D S COR N E R | ARTS + C ULTURE

There are few sports that require as much discipline as ballet – an art form rooted in technique that serves as the basis for all forms of dance. While strength, coordination and control are natural takeaways from ballet, its lifelong impacts go far beyond the physical. Spring Hill-based The Children’s Ballet Theatre is a traditional ballet academy that teaches far more than pliés and relevés, with invaluable life skills and acts of service being key takeaways for students. “Ballet teaches students to have poise, that they’re going to be good citizens in the community and that they can do hard things,” Chelsea Howell, The Children’s Ballet Theatre artistic director, shares. “I myself grew up in

the world of dance. My mother was my first dance teacher. It just snowballed from there and one day, I decided to open my own ballet school. I wanted to proficiently keep the arts alive in the hearts of children.” The Children’s Ballet Theatre was born out of a desire to focus on ballet technique, performance and service. Beginning with a preschool academy for children ages three to seven, the theatre offers creative movement classes aimed at refining motor skills and introducing young dancers to the structure and terminology of ballet. Introductory classes in ballet are offered through age seven, followed by the ballet academy for dancers up to 18. “Our classes are structured like an old classical ballet school, where students all wear uniforms and a classical bun,” Chelsea adds. “Students in the ballet academy take one ballet class, and as they grow and mature, that class grows with them. With any art, you keep building upon it so you gain more experiences, knowledge and muscle memory.” Guided by her heart for service, Chelsea created an opportunity for dancers to give back through The Children’s Ballet Theatre Company, a group of dancers aged 10 to 18, merging dance with service. Company members are required to meet certain criteria and complete an interview and audition to join, then follow a schedule alternating dance training and service projects. The group works with MOVE Inclusive Dance, a local studio that welcomes students of all ability levels. CONTINUED >

“This year, we were able to go and help them with their recital,” Chelsea shares. “We danced with them, helped backstage, and, ultimately, helped them do and feel what we feel as well. Our dancers were happy to help and even want to serve in their studios more as well.” In December 2022, Children’s Ballet Theatre celebrated its 10th anniversary with a performance of "The Nutcracker," with a new show slated to debut in the spring with a story featuring all levels and ages. “We don’t just go in and teach ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary or modern, it’s all-encompassing of life,” Chelsea says. “Whatever the path our dancers take, they take a piece of selflessness with them as they go out into the world and open hearts. I find joy in knowing they can come back to this place and know this is home, it’s a safe place for them.” ChildrensBalletTheatre.com

Expect The Unexpected Life Lessons Learned On A Farm ARTICLE BY KAREN CREASON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

26

LOCA LS ON LY | R EAL ESTATE

Growing up on a farm in small-town Ransom, Kansas, Kristin Pendergraft could not imagine how the lessons learned growing up would impact her future. “If I did something on a Friday night, my dad knew about it Saturday morning when he went to the coffee shop. From a young age, I learned never to do anything ethically or morally wrong which would make my parents upset or disappointed.” Farm life and those lessons have carried over to her adult life in expected and unexpected ways. Moving to Tennessee in 2001 for a business opportunity, Kristin exclaims, “It immediately felt like home!” When plans did not work out as expected, Kristin accepted a position as an executive assistant with a large real estate office. Told by her manager, “You are probably the best assistant I’ve ever had, but you are wasting your time. With your exceptional problem-solving skills and love of teaching, you should be a broker/manager, not an assistant.” Kristin quickly earned her real estate license. She became the managing broker for three different large real estate firms, served on local and state realtor boards and continued to actively sell. In 2020, Kristin became the Broker/ Owner of RE/MAX Encore in Columbia. Unexpected is your suit-wearing agent showing up to your closing on a motorcycle. Explains Kristin, “I grew up riding dirt bikes. Owning a motorcycle was on my bucket list. I was sick of watching the back of Syd’s [her boyfriend] helmet.” After seven years of taking the back seat, she purchased her Harley three-and-a-half years ago. The couple enjoys taking rides to Guntersville Lake and exploring the countryside on day trips. Yet those early lessons are still top of her mind. Instead of taking a paycheck as the Broker/Owner,

Kristin reinvests her profits into the office to provide the agents with what they need to succeed. “If I can help other agents meet their goals, I'm going to reach my goals. I enjoy helping other people succeed.” Designated a “Miracle Office” by the Children’s Miracle Network, Kristin and her team of agents have raised over $21,000 in 2022 to support the children’s programs at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. “We are a community-driven team. We actively support several families at Christmas, our local high school sports teams and our local fire department in providing educational materials to schools. We give back to the community at every opportunity.” When not working, Kristin plays sand volleyball with her son and others. “I played volleyball in college and coached travel teams. It is something fun I do for me.” With her son and daughter living nearby, Kristin counts her blessings. She plans on taking her four granddaughters on a Disney Cruise, visiting her mother and older siblings in Kansas and continuing motorcycle and train rides with Syd. She is hopeful 2023 will provide her some time to stay home as well. “I am not quite the shoemakers' kids, but I have some projects I'd like to complete in my own home - like painting my kitchen,” she quips. Kristin enjoys working on puzzles and watching anything Kansas State University, but it is apparent she loves her job. “I love helping buyers and sellers - helping people who never thought they could buy a home or helping someone move on to the next stage of life - I love being part of those moments.” The lessons of hard work, dedication, and community learned on a farm in her youth have served Kristin well. Discover Treasure at

Spring Hill Antique Mall

ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

30

H OT SP OT | ARTS + CU LTURE

Rebecca Stilwell

Sometimes you don’t find the best things in life, but rather they find you. This is true in both antiquing, and in Rebecca Stilwell’s case with the actual antique store. She first came across the Spring Hill Antique Mall as a customer living in Chicago, stopping in to shop any time she was visiting Tennessee. As a frequent visitor of the mall since its inception in 2005, she still has the receipt from her very first purchase there. Several years later, the east Tennessee native moved back to the Volunteer State, settling down in Middle Tennessee. Not being the type to sit idle, when she retired from a career in the financial services industry and a short period as an interim president of a design college, she reached out to the mall’s owners Paul and Margaret Greer in 2015 with interest in opening a booth, when they asked if

she’d instead like to buy the entire mall. A newly retired Stilwell was excited by the prospect but needed some convincing that it was the right move for her. After discussing the idea with her husband, financial advisor, and others in her circle, all voices echoed a resounding “yes,” so she dove right in and never looked back. Antiques have long held a place in Stilwell’s heart. From the time she was a little girl, she’s been captivated by antiques, pinpointing the origin of her love to visits she used to make to a family friend’s house as a child. “Their house was always full of antiques, and I always loved the way I felt in their house,” recalls Stilwell. “I remember being in their house when I was five years old and loving the old furniture and loving seeing things that had stories and were old.”

The Spring Hill Antique Mall is filled with vendors who offer a plethora of treasures from antique furnishings and dishware to oil lamps and mason jars. The original owners started with one vendor, and it just kept growing from there. There is even a waitlist for monthly booth rental since they rarely have turnover of their beloved vendors. With items from a range of eras and price points, the mall is frequented by locals and visitors alike— from weekly regulars to tourists on antique-focused road trips. “I think part of what makes the Spring Hill Antique Mall so special is that there is a wide variety,” she explains. “95% of items at the Spring Hill Antique Mall are antique, vintage, or collectible. You just never know what you’re going to find there.” SpringHillAntiqueMall.com

EXPERIENCING THE POWER OF CONNECTION AT HIDDEN BEE FARM ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Genuine connection is a powerful thing to experience. For the Seaton family, what started as a bond between their son Jackson and animals has led to a ripple effect of connection in their community. Just a few years ago, Alicia and David Seaton purchased a farm in Columbia, Tennessee for their family to call home. While they initially had a few therapy animals on the farm for their youngest son Jackson, who has autism, they unexpectedly found their farm growing into one with an impact they could never have imagined. The Seatons were asked to take in two donkeys who had been rescued from an abusive situation. They found the pair of the animals to be both skittish and aggressive out of fear because of their prior trauma. However, their son Jackson had an indescribable connection with the animals that they knew was something special. “When they saw Jackson, they would immediately walk to him and snuggle their head into his chest,” says Alicia Seaton of the rescue donkeys. “Jackson is autistic with limited verbal ability, but Jackson had

an instant non-verbal intimate bond with these tragic animals. There was a sense of peace and comfort between them. We later recognized this was not limited to only the donkeys but all animals – often the more abused the animal, the deeper the bond [they had with Jackson]. Our autistic son experienced joy from some of the saddest animals, while [he] also brought joy to some of the saddest animals. It was the most beautiful mutually beneficial relationship that we have been blessed to see.” Upon experiencing this special bond, the family made the leap to not only welcome more animals but also the community to their farm when they established the non-profit rescue two years ago. Since the initial pair of donkeys, the Seatons have taken in numerous farm animals that have been rescued from abusive situations or have found their way to Hidden Bee Animal Rescue due to situations such as their owners passing away, moving without a way to bring them along, etc. The farm and non-profit seek to teach the local community and children—especially those with CONTINUED >

special needs—lessons that build character and responsibility through caring for the animals. “Learning the importance of social responsibility for the welfare of animals was our mission with our own sons and was especially important for our youngest with autism,” explains Seaton. “Teaching him the importance of caring for something other than himself helped develop his own self-worth. His ability to look at these beautiful animals in need with kindness and care gives him purpose. In the end, it gives us the ability at Hidden Bee Animal Rescue to be dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating abused and neglected farm animals by creating a safe haven where these individuals can recover, thrive, and ultimately begin their new happier life.” Hidden Bee Animal Rescue is open to the public for events, school field trips, and events with the special needs community. Individuals and families can schedule an appointment to visit or volunteer at the farm at HiddenBeeAnimalRescue.org. Ways to help include assisting with farm repairs, engaging with animals, supporting monetarily to help with vet bills, feeding the animals, stable repairs, etc. “Through rescue & rehabilitation combined with education around animal welfare issues, there is no limit to what good can be done within our communities & beyond,” says Alicia Seaton.

ARTICLE BY BRIANNA MELANSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANNON LEBLANC

Marketing Magic

Sometimes if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you have to create it yourself. When Shannon LeBlanc was ready to rebrand her photography business, which started as family portraiture and lifestyle photography in 2012, she struggled to find a brand photographer with the same perspective. She realized there was a niche that needed to be filled in the area, so she taught herself and expanded her business to offer brand photography her way. Investing in quality photos is a smart move for any business. No one likes to look at stock photos, selfies, or blurry or outdated photos on websites and social media. Shannon likes to tie in the lifestyle photography aspect to the brand photos. She explains, “I knew I didn’t want to just focus on what they do, but also what makes them who they are.” Tastefully incorporating the person’s interests and individuality in photos makes them stand out and be more relatable when people are researching the business. Clients will always get more than a standard headshot. Shannon continues, “I’m more than just my camera. I’m a mom. My husband and I own businesses. I’m multi-faceted and I want that to be depicted in still photos. Normally I have a 44 CONTINUED >

oz. of unsweetened iced tea from Sonic. So for my most recent brand shoot, I took photos with that 44 oz. iced tea because that’s just who I am.” Shannon is a mother to two children Eloise and Oliver. Her husband, Daniel, is an entrepreneur whose latest venture is Hayes Street Fitness in the Broadwest building in Nashville. He bought Shannon her first camera when she was pregnant with their first child, and has been her biggest supporter. Shannon offers multiple types of packages based on the client’s needs that result in a gallery of their own personalized, professional photos. She says, “I have super new clients who have no idea what branding is, and clients who have already gone through a full brand design and have a logo, all of their fonts and colors, and know the audience they’re reaching.” She walks them through the entire month-long process, working as a team from the start. The first step is completing a detailed questionnaire to figure out their story and what needs to be accomplished. Then they are sent a PDF guide of outfit and boutique recommendations, contacts for makeup artists and hair stylists, and anyone else they could need to make them feel their best while being photographed. She also provides a checklist and tips the clients can use throughout the month to make sure they’re prepared and can simply enjoy themselves on photoshoot day. Shannon makes everything stress-free and sets clients up for success. She says, “For my bigger packages, they also receive an Instagram mockup, so I take nine of their photos and put them on a faux Instagram layout with caption ideas for each photo so I can give them that jumping-off point.” By the end of the session, she and her client are basically best friends. Shannon’s photography has been published nationally for projects with people such as fitness guru Erin Oprea and local influencer Jenny Reimold. She photographed the content for Jenny’s Instagram page for a while and partnered with her for several Home Goods ad campaigns. Shannon LeBlanc does everything she can to make her client’s brand photography experience a magical one. Also a Disney vacation planner, she likes to say she’s the “Fairy Godmother of brand photos,” ready to give businesses a glow-up. lifestylebyleblanc.com
