Happy new year, dear readers and friends! I, for one, am happy to see 2022 go away. I look forward to the newness and hope a new year brings with it. Our first cover of 2023 is none other than the incomparable Martina McBride. She's been belting out songs since 1992 and she continues her storied career with a bright 2023. Also in this issue, we talk to Meghan Littlejohn of Orangetheory Fitness. She provides your first dose of inspiration this year when you read her story and learn how she battled back from a traumatic brain injury. Harpeth Valley Dermatology, Spring Hill Memorial, Freedom Reigns Ranch and Nashville's Oak Steakhouse all have a story they're excited to tell within the pages of this wonderful issue. Martina McBride Continues to Shine On This Year WITH A TOUR AND AN EXTENDED COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME EXHIBIT Martina McBride has been singing for as long as she can remember. With a career that spans over 30 years, she just completed 12 dates out on the road for her Joy of Christmas Tour, her 12th year of being on the road this time of year. When asked if she likes being out on the road, she says, "Sometimes. It's a balance thing. I also love being at home. I'm kind of a homebody. I try to balance out my tour where we have equal amounts of time on the road and at home. It's an interesting existence. There's that hour and a half on stage where you're connecting with the audience and it's really special. I wouldn't keep doing it if I didn't enjoy it." And it's a good thing for all of us that she does enjoy it, because she'll start 2023 with 15 more dates on The Judds: The Final Tour. The new, added dates include stops in Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Ohio, Florida, and West Virginia. "I say a prayer of gratitude before every show. A prayer for guidance. And I do my own hair and makeup on tour so that's really my time to switch gears from every day no makeup Martina to glamour and getting ready to go on stage. I like that transition period." In addition to being a repeat Female Vocalist of the Year and a Grammy-nominated singer, Martina is a first-rate cook. She released a cookbook in 2018, Martina's Kitchen Mix: My Recipe Playlist for Real Life Cookbook." I'd love to write another cookbook. They are just a lot of work. There's a lot of writing and testing and cooking. It's being creative in a different way than making music." She continues, "I love to cook, period. It's my therapy. My place of joy is to be in the kitchen cooking. I love to cook a lot of different things from soups and salads to braised meats and things that take a long time. I've just recently, in the past year and a half, gotten into grilling a little bit. I was always intimidated by the grill for some reason, but I found it's a lot easier than I thought it was. I also have a smoker, so in the winter time, I smoke cheeses." Martina also has a soft spot for women and children's charities. She explains her global charity initiative, Team Music Is Love. "Team Music Is Love started as a fan initiative. A group of fans contacted me and asked me if they could wear one of my t-shirts to a breast cancer walk. I was like, ‘Sure!’ It started as Team Martina about 15 years ago and I thought we needed a better name. It just kind of grew from there. It's volunteer-based. We do things sometimes in the cities where we play to help the local communities. We've done everything from starting a music school for a girls shelter in Guatemala to helping fund an inner city park. We've done a lot of work with food banks. We've done diaper giveaways, baby showers for shelters. We look and see where the need is. It isn't based on one specific cause." Martina is also really proud of her Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum exhibit, Martina McBride: The Power of Her Voice. Fans can catch the exhibit through August of 2023. Says Martina, "They did a great job!" And what else can we expect from the Kansas native this year? "I'd love to make new music in 2023." One can only hope. MartinaMcBride.com

Thompson’s Station Dermatologists Pile Up The Miles In Pursuit Of Personal And Professional Dreams

They’re former colleagues who became competitors. Now they’re a husband-and-wife team that operates one of the area’s best known dermatology practices. Drs. Megan Morrison and Pezhman Shoureshi opened Harpeth Valley Dermatology in March 2020. But their journey to Middle Tennessee entailed many hours and miles driving about the country. After graduating from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, the doctors landed internships at the same hospital in Blacksburg, Virginia. That’s where their bourgeoning relationship took hold. But they found themselves driving together to distant locales where they’d interview for highly sought-after medical residencies. It was not without its awkward moments. “It’s a stressful time as you're competing against a lot of applicants just for the opportunity to interview for a few residencies,” says Dr. Shoureshi. Dr. Morrison concurs. “It was an interesting beginning to a relationship. It’s kind of like, ‘I want you to get this residency, but I don’t want you taking my spot!’ But the hours in the car and our common experiences and career paths helped us get to know and understand each other.” Perhaps it was fate but they both landed residencies at their first choice: Dr. Morrison at Michigan State and Dr. Shoureshi at Case Medical Center in Cleveland. They were apart, but still close enough to

maintain their relationship which led to marriage on November 2, 2013. “We didn’t see each other that much at the beginning,” says Dr. Morrison. On one of the rare occasions that they were together, Dr. Shoureshi remembers, “going to a piano bar and falling asleep, not from the late night, but the long hours!” Holidays meant more long car rides for the newlyweds. “We would drive to my parents’ home in Florida, and Nashville was halfway,” says Dr. Morrison. “We really liked it and that’s what led us to move here in 2015.” It doesn’t hurt that both docs possess musical streaks as well. She taught piano prior to med school; he plays guitar, including lap and pedal steel. They’re also frequent patrons of live music events, whether they’re in small neighborhood venues or in Nashville’s large theaters and arenas. Today they reside in downtown Franklin with their 2 1/2-year-old daughter and soon-to-be 1-year-old son. Rural hikes and downtown strolls are favorite family activities. In addition to Thompson’s Station, there’s a Harpeth Valley Dermatology location in Smyrna. Dr. Morrison is Fellowship-trained in Mohs Micrographic (cancer) Surgery while Dr. Shoureshi practices general dermatology. Rounding out their staff is Dr. Benjamin Bashline. Spring Hill and the surrounding communities hold a deep and genuine place in the hearts of the family and staff of Spring Hill Memorial Park, Funeral Home and Cremation Services established by the Stephens Family. Pam Stephens, a third-generation funeral director explains, “My mother was born in Spring Hill and she and my father wanted to give back to the community. Thompson’s Station and Columbia were growing rapidly, and they knew there was a need for a funeral home.” With the help of family members, the cemetery was established in 1998 and the funeral home was completed in 2000, which expanded services with Williamson Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens in Franklin. Pam’s daughter, Mandi Goodrich, joined the business in 2000 and explains how their family tradition of serving families with compassion and care has continued. “We have a team of family service counselors and funeral directors who follow up with every family we serve, and can provide them with grief resources including a library of books, web resources, and grief share groups. It’s the goal of our entire team to not just be there for the service,

but to make sure we continue to lend a helping hand.” One of the home’s added values is grief dog Mac who helps families through the grieving process. Mandi learned about grief dogs after attending an industry conference and Mac, a sheepadoodle (English sheep dog and standard poodle), went through extensive training to learn about comforting people. Pam says, “I have to say it was one of the best decisions we ever made! Spring Hill is home to a new location of Orangetheory Fitness. It is the third franchise for owners and operators Meghan and Scott Littlejohn, joining their studios in Franklin and Murfreesboro. The Littlejohns have a very personal connection to the program’s mission and the importance of exercise in overall health and well-being. “It changed our lives and we made it our mission to change others’ lives through Orangetheory,” says Meghan. Several years ago while living in South Florida, Meghan suffered a near-fatal case of meningitis and acute encephalitis,

resulting in a traumatic brain injury which left her unable to perform basic life skills. “Our children were young. It was the scariest time in our lives,” recalls Scott, who is a cardiology physician assistant. “Meghan was an executive in a national healthcare recruiting firm, who then, amongst many things, could not read or write.” She endured two years of intense rehabilitation, but after exhausting efforts to improve her cognitive and neurologic function, her doctor prescribed two hours a week at Orangetheory Fitness,

Although primarily focused on teenagers, the organization also assists children and young adults who've been through trauma. Carissa Ramsdell, FRR founder and executive director, can sympathize with those who come to the farm, both human and animal. “Because of the abuse and trauma I endured growing up, I was super angry at the world, at God, and everyone and everything,” she says. “But God basically used my horse, Boston, who was also dealing with a difficult past,

to save my life. Through working and training with my horse, God unlocked my own heart.” Freedom Reigns Ranch was officially founded in October of 2015, but Carissa was helping kids with her horse, which she got in 2009, long before that. “Some kids from church were going through some challenging things, and being outside with one of God’s most beautiful creatures was really something that brought them a lot of peace.” While caring for and training with Boston, she watched them become more confident

and empowered. “They stepped outside of their own comfort zones in a way that led to growth, not only with a horse, but in their everyday lives. We basically combined a broken horse with a child whose heart had been shattered and watched God heal both at the same time.” Shortly after, a friend came to volunteer, someone donated a pony, and then she ended up taking a rescue horse that had been abandoned in a dog pen. “It just snowballed, and all of a sudden these kids were coming and more people were coming to help,” says Carissa. “Then more horses needed rescuing too.” At that point, she knew she had to start her own nonprofit. “Caring for horses is expensive, plus we felt from the very beginning that we were never supposed to charge anything. So we really needed to create an avenue for folks who believed in what we were doing to support it.” This summer, the ranch will have officially provided more than 10,000 hours of mentorship. “We have about 50 individuals that come twice a month for the season and some who stay for multiple seasons because they really need this safe space to continue to thrive in their lives,” she says. For many of these kids, getting up on a horse and trusting it is life-changing. “I see this unbelievable thing happening where they're building this relationship with the horse,” she says. “We usually share that horse's story -- over half of our herd has their own history of abuse, starvation and neglect. As you watch, it's like these puzzle pieces coming together and you see how they realize that the horse that had been thrown away by the world, means the world to them and they connect that with their own life. That then translates into their own emotional sense of well-being.” The ranch has been leasing about eight acres in Thompson’s Station, which houses 12 horses, but it needs to expand to provide its services to more people. “We have a wait list that extends 12 to 16 months and over a hundred kids are on it,” says Carissa. “Our hope and prayer is for someone to grant or donate 25 to 40 acres somewhere in Southern Williamson County or even Northern Murray County.” They’re also busy raising money for a long-term lease and/or to build up the new land and make any renovations necessary. Carissa says she’s amazed and overwhelmed to be a part of something like this. “Going from not having a reason to live 10 or 15 years ago and feeling like I would never overcome what I had been through to watching so many kids find hope again, there is nothing better.
