LIFESTYLE LETTER

Feeling Grateful

November 2023 PUBLISHER

Athena West | athena.west@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Maria Dinoia | maria.dinoia@citylifestyle.com

November has arrived and so has the cooler weather. Along with the drop in temperature, comes a sense of excitement as we head into the holiday season. November kicks it off with Thanksgiving, documented for the first time in 1619 as a way to give thanks to God for the blessings of the harvest. Through the religious and cultural evolution of the holiday, the one constant that has remained is that it is a day of being grateful. And gratefulness is the theme that unites the stories of this issue. Starting with our cover story on legendary actor and humanitarian, Gary Sinise. Gary started The Gary Sinise Foundation in 2011, now located in Cool Springs, to honor our nation's defenders, veterans, first responders, their families, and those in need. He says, "I believe we can never do enough to express our gratitude and give support to the men and women who willingly go into harm’s way to keep us safe and free, but we can always do a little more." We talk to two businesses that do so much for the local community Grecian Family Restaurant and Bakery and Hyundai of Columbia. Read their stories to find out how much they give back. Of course, we didn't forget a recipe for pumpkin bread and offer tips for starting a daily gratitude journal. Me? I'm grateful for a supportive husband, three happy and thriving children and family and friends who love me. In this season of gratitude and gratefulness, remember to count your blessings. In the words of Oprah Winfrey, “Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.”

Wheeling And Dealing For The Greater Good AN AUTOMOTIVE TEAM THAT’S DOING MUCH MORE THAN JUST SELLING CARS ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAWN SAINT MICHAEL

D R IV E R’S N OT E BOOK | AUTO + MARI NE

Although Chris Alexander worked in the automotive business all through college, he never planned on it being a lifelong career. But here he is, 20 years later, working in the same industry and happy to be doing it. After joining the Hyundai/Ford Dealership of Columbia almost two years ago, he’s now the general manager and a dealer-partner. And for the last few months, he has been busy shaking things up. “My biggest goal is to change the perception and business model of how dealerships are run,” he says. “It first starts with your employees and their commitment and their interactions with customers. We have very little turnover and high retention. In my opinion, our employees are our greatest investment.” Every morning, Chris meets with his service team at 7:20 and then with his sales team at 8:30. “We don’t try to focus on the big

picture or one big thing. Instead, we focus on one detail and maximize that in a day, which creates an opportunity for 30 details in 30 days to become greater and better.” One of those details is to have sales managers, not just salespeople, meet and greet customers when they come into the showroom. “They don’t only come out to try to convince them to buy a car,” he says. “We want them to introduce themselves right away and thank them for giving us the opportunity to do business with them.” He adds, “We are no pressure sales and our people don’t work on commission. We also pride ourselves on being fully transparent with the car buying process.” What he’s doing is certainly working. The dealership, which is under the Barnes Crossing Auto Group with fifteen dealerships across six states, is ranked number 19 out of 887 Hyundai CONTINUED >

dealerships in the country. “We have the highest numbers of all Hyundais in our region for our service, and right now we’re ranked number one in our whole region in fixed operations,” says Chris. Hyundai of Columbia also uses technology to accommodate customers’ preferences. “We don’t call, we text,” he says. “We don’t have written ROs [repair orders]. Everything is digital.” For those who prefer phone calls and paper documents, they will of course accommodate that. “If you take care of people, you’ll have all the business you need,” says Chris. “I take a lot of pride that we rank in the top in the country. But we’re always looking toward how we can get better, so we want to hear from our customers.” Another goal for Chris is to get more involved in the community and give back, and he’s succeeding with this as well. “We just visited the Vanderbilt Children’s Cancer Hospital which was very, very touching,” he says. “Our Hyundai brand presented them with funding for cancer research, and we were able to meet with some of the kids and their parents.” He’s also working on putting together teams of management personnel to volunteer in the community doing clean up, planting trees in parks and whatever else needs to be done. The dealership has also reached out to local high schools and has supported events in the community such as a rodeo and fair. “In the automotive business, you will hear management speak about how they believe in their people, their employees, and their customers, but I think actions speak louder than words,” says Chris. “There has to be substance and it can’t always be something that you do because you’re looking for a return. At the end of the day, people want to believe in something, they want to be

18

D R IV E R’S N OT E BOOK | AUTO + MARI NE

a part of something, and they want to understand the why of it.” Many dealerships, he reiterates, have a terrible reputation. “People don’t always trust us, they don’t believe us, and for whatever reason the industry created these norms. I think the more we get involved in the community, and not just from a marketing standpoint, the word of mouth of what we’re doing will travel.” He adds, “Our employees see that, and they understand why we do what we do, and that their investment is not just an opportunity for dollars and cents. It’s because they feel that they’re a part of something greater than just a job.” He often asks his team, “‘If these were our last five minutes on earth, what would we be thinking about? Would we be thinking about our position? Would we be thinking about how much money we have, or about our cars, our house?’ What really matters is the substance that makes us feel fulfilled and gives us hope. I feel that it is our responsibility to do more for others, not just for ourselves. Fulfillment comes from investing in others and seeing things change for the better.” For the holidays, Hyundai of Columbia will be choosing five local families who need assistance. These families will be given food, presents and some additional financial help. “We have 160 employees and we’re going to ask our team to let us know about families in need and then choose the five most needy,” says Chris. Chris, who lives in Spring Hill with his golden retriever, Jules, enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, Drueann, and being outdoors. “I’m a beach bum at heart. I love to surf, but I also love the woods.” HyundaiOfColumbia.com

MAMA LOVES DOLLY

20

LOCA L’S C H OICE | EN TERTAI NME NT

Like many fans, Amy Szeliga has a vast knowledge of Dolly Parton and an extensive collection of Dolly décor, but Amy has deeper reasons for admiring Dolly. Like Dolly, Amy comes from humble beginnings in the mountains of Appalachia. “My dad worked at a salvage yard and built our house using scrap wood,” she says. “We had a stove for heat and no air conditioning. After I went to college, my parents got a window a/c unit which was so fancy.” Amy’s father attended school until the sixth grade and her mother until the eighth. Amy graduated from Oakdale, a small K-12 school, where teachers inspired her love of reading. “There wasn’t a lot to do besides play in the woods, and since I don’t have siblings, I spent my time reading books. Reading was a way to get somewhere and see something different. “When I was in elementary school my dad brought me a manual typewriter from a junkyard and that was exciting! In fifth grade I got an electric typewriter. I was so happy to have that to write stories on.”

Amy’s dad played in an Appalachian string band and shared stories about Dolly’s history, how she grew up poor and was proud of her parents and her background. “I relate to Dolly,” says Amy. “She started with very little and didn’t let that stop her from anything she wanted to do.” Amy attended Tennessee Tech on a scholarship and majored in education. There she met her husband, Rob, and they married while he was attending optometry school. Afterwards they moved to Williamson County, where Rob had grown up, and opened Spring Hill Eyecare. Amy taught school for 13 years then stepped away to raise her family. The couple has been married 20 years and they have three children: Jackson, 17; Londyn, 9; and Magnolia, 6. They frequently travel to the Smokies and to Dollywood, where Amy relishes seeing the growth of the theme park. “Dollywood is so picturesque, and whether you like food or rides or nature, there’s so much to offer even if you don’t know who Dolly is – if that’s even possible.” Amy’s children often asked her why she admires Dolly. The question led her to sit down one night and compose what became Mama Loves Dolly, a delightful rhyming storybook. The book, published by Franklin’s Clovercroft Publishing with illustrations by artist Izzy Bean, tells the story of Dolly Parton’s commitment to help others. More than a book about Dolly’s life, it’s a lesson on building character. “One of the first things Dolly did after she became famous was, she came back to her hometown to make sure people benefited from her success,” says Amy. “By purchasing Silver Dollar City and turning it into Dollywood, she provided thousands of jobs.” Dollywood grew to include the Dollywood Foundation, which oversees philanthropic efforts that include the “My People Fund,” a project that raised $9 million to help Smoky Mountain citizens after the 2016 wildfires.

The program that’s closest to Amy’s heart is Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, with over 200 million books given to 2.6 million children worldwide. As Mama Loves Dolly explains, “Dolly knew the way to help children succeed, was to give them quality books to enjoy and to read!” It’s hard to believe Amy has never met Dolly Parton. She certainly hopes to one day. “I want my children to realize that as soon as they are able, they need to help someone less fortunate. Success isn’t success if you keep it to yourself, at least I don’t consider that success.” Or as she writes in Mama Loves Dolly, “But through her good fortune Dolly never forgot … that those who HAVE should help those who HAVE NOT.” ReadingHappilyEverAfter.com

THE

Gary Sinise FOUNDATION

Gary Sinise is a beloved actor and humanitarian known for his exceptional contributions both on and off the screen. With a prolific career spanning decades, Sinise has earned critical acclaim for many film roles, including his role as Lieutenant Dan in “Forrest Gump” and as Detective Mac Taylor in the popular TV series “CSI: NY.” However, his impact extends far beyond Hollywood. In 2011, he founded The Gary Sinise Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting veterans, first responders, and their families. Through various initiatives, the foundation provides vital services, including but not limited to housing assistance, mental health support, and adaptive technology for wounded veterans. Gary Sinise’s unwavering commitment to honoring and assisting those who have sacrificed for their country has made him a respected and devoted advocate for veterans and first responders’ well-being. Gary’s memoir, Grateful American: From Self To Service tells t he story of h ow he f ound his true calling in life. GarySiniseFoundation.org

WHY DID YOU START THE FOUNDATION? GS: Beginning with the veterans in my own family. When I met my wife, not my wife at the time, but when I met her, she introduced me to her brothers who had both served in Vietnam. And her sister was in the Army and she married a Vietnam veteran who was in the Army. And they had a son who was in the Army. And my side of the family, lots of veterans, World War I, World War II, Korea era, so lots of veterans in the family. I actually started getting involved in supporting local Vietnam veterans groups in the Chicago area back in the early eighties. And that was because I was impacted by my wife’s two brothers and her sister’s husband.

And I got to know them, and I started talking to them and picking their brains about what it was like to serve in Vietnam and come home to a difficult situation in the country where the country was really turning its back on our Vietnam veterans. I really was curious about all that. I realized in getting to know them, that while they were serving in Vietnam and going through all the hardships there and the difficulties and the challenges, I was pretty much oblivious, even though I would see it on the news every night. I was just playing my guitar and chasing girls around and doing plays. And so, I started to feel somewhat guilty, and that’s when I started to think I want to do something for our Vietnam veterans. So I started supporting them locally in Chicago. And those were the early seeds that grew in the nineties when I played a Vietnam veteran in Forrest Gump and started working with our wounded. There’s a chapter in my book, Grateful American, called “Turning Points,” and it really is the Sept. 11 chapter, as it reflects on how I view the eighties and nineties as just teeing up something that would take full flight after Sept. 11 into a full-time service mission.

DID YOU FEEL THAT SERVICES FOR VETERANS WERE LACKING? GS: It wasn’t that I felt that they were lacking. I wanted to help by getting involved in a lot of the different nonprofits that were in the military and veteran and first responder support community. So I would just raise my hand and say, “Do you need me to do a fundraiser for you? Do you need me to do a PSA? Can I help you with your mission?” And that’s one of the ways that I found I could do a lot more was by getting involved with a lot of nonprofits. I got involved with maybe 25 or 30 different military support organizations. And by doing that, I really saw where the needs were, because a lot of them were involved in different types of things. Some were helping our wounded service members, some were helping our firefighters, some were helping our Gold Star children, and I was just spreading myself all over the place. I found a lot of people were involved in trying to do something positive. And so, it just became clear to me, at a certain point, that the next step for me in this journey was going to be starting my own nonprofit. It wasn’t that I thought there was a shortage of nonprofits out there in the

26

military world. There are thousands of them, big ones and small ones. But I knew that I could play a role. I’d seen lending my services to these other nonprofits as being effective in helping them. And I thought, ‘I’m just going to continue that by creating my own.’

WHAT WENT INTO YOUR DECISION TO MOVE IT TO THE NASHVILLE AREA? GS: Well, different things. I’ve lived in California since 1987. I started thinking there might be a different state in the future. So I was looking at all those no tax states. I’m used to California. It’s hard to beat the weather out here. That’s what’s kept us here for so long. And of course, we raised our kids here. I have a bunch of friends in the Nashville area, in the music business and the movie business. A buddy of mine said, “You know what? We’re moving our business out to Nashville. We’re leaving California.” And I had been thinking about Nashville. So I said to my daughter, “If I said I wanted to move to Tennessee, to the Nashville area, what would you say?” And she’s got three little ones. So I needed to know that she was on board, because we weren’t going to leave if she didn’t want to. We weren’t going to leave her and the babies, right? Plus her husband works for my foundation. He’s a wonderful guy. He’s one of the directors at my foundation, and the foundation is based here {in California}. And so that night, after I mentioned that to her, she went online and she sent me like six different houses to look at, and she said, “Dad, look what you could get.” She was all excited. And then my other daughter, I’d been trying to get her to move back to California. She went to college in Washington, DC and she was living there. She got married and I was trying to get her to move back here {to California}, and she didn’t want to. So I said to her, “I talked to your sister about the idea of maybe moving to Tennessee. Would you do that?” And she said, “Yes, I would do that.” With both of our daughters on board, I then went to my board of directors and said, “Guess what? I’m going to leave California and move to the Nashville area, and that means the foundation is going to go, too.” So we ended up moving the foundation before we left. We’re still here in California. We’ve had some complications that have kept us here, but we’re getting ready to move. But my daughters and their husbands are all there.

YOU MENTIONED YOUR SON-IN-LAW. ARE YOUR GIRLS OR OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS INVOLVED IN THE FOUNDATION AS WELL? GS: Both my daughters’ husbands work for the foundation. My son worked for the foundation for a while, but he couldn’t do it anymore. And my nephew worked for the foundation for a while. In fact, when we moved from Woodland Hills to Nashville, my nephew was working for the foundation. He’s a twotour Afghanistan veteran. He was in the Army for 13 years. And he moved with the foundation. And then, you know what? I got a call from him not too long after he moved there. He said, “Uncle G, I love working for the foundation, but I think I want to be a police officer. I’m going to go to the academy in Nashville.” And he just graduated from the academy and he’s a police officer in the Nashville metro area. I’m very proud of him. He’s serving the community there.

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FOUNDATION IN FIVE YEARS? GS: The foundation is always going to be driven by the need. I’ve said this multiple times to our leadership team and to the board. A lot of times they will look at the growth of a foundation based on the amount of money that comes in, and what level you want to be at a certain point, or something like that. I don’t really look at it that way. I want to always be able to expand our services depending on where we see we could be beneficial to somebody. The mission statement is broad. We operate in a lot of different areas, and that’s because that’s what I was doing before the foundation. Like I said, I was supporting multiple different nonprofits doing a lot of different types of things. So I wanted to continue doing that, but I wanted to create an entity that the public could support. Because people were asking me all the time, “Where should I donate and who should I donate to? I want to help the kids, and I want to help the wounded, and the police... And so, I would point them to all these different organizations and everything. And then I thought, ‘Well, I’ll just create something that’s operating in all those spaces.’ We’ll take those resources in. I’ll be able to hire people to actually work full time to expand the mission. I’m just one guy going out there volunteering my time, and I wanted to do more. And building a team and an army whose full-time job it is to carry out this mission is what I wanted to do. And that’s where I see the foundation continuing to grow. I’d like it to dig its heels in and have a strong base for many years to come and be able to expand where we see the needs as they grow and change. CONTINUED >

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE LIEUTENANT DAN BAND, 13 MEMBERS. HOW DID YOU PUT ALL THOSE GUYS TOGETHER? THAT’S A LOT OF GUYS THAT HAVE TO TRAVEL WITH YOU! GS: It was very grassroots. I played when I was a kid and played music through high school. Then I got very involved with acting and starting a theater company. I stopped playing and just focused on acting and building the theater company for a long time. But then in the late nineties, I just started jamming around again with some guys in Chicago. And when I would come to town, I’d call them up and we’d get together and play a little music. In 1997, I did a movie up in Montreal and there were some guys that played. And we ended up playing in a club. I started to get back in the music again. And then Sept. 11 happened, and I started going on USO tours. I would go just as Gary Sinise, the actor, and shake hands and take pictures and sign autographs and visit with the troops and that kind of thing. And on some of those tours, there were entertainers. In the great spirit of Bob Hope, there were singers and rockers and people that were performing. And having a little garage band that I would get together with every once in a while and play, I pitched that to the USO and said, “Hey, would you let me take some musicians on a tour?” And they said, yes. And I thought, ‘Well, I’ll just call it Gary Sinise and the Lieutenant Dan Band. People know who Lieutenant Dan is. That was 20 years ago. Since then, I think we just played our 550th concert.

HOW CAN PEOPLE GET INVOLVED WITH YOUR FOUNDATION? GS: We operate all over the country. We have chapters. We have a chapter in Florida. We have a chapter in San Diego. We’re expanding, going to create some additional chapters in different cities around the country. You can certainly donate. You can learn about the foundation and visit our YouTube channel.

ARE YOU STILL ACTING THESE DAYS? DO YOU HAVE ANY ACTING PROJECTS COMING UP? There’s one project I’m involved with if it gets off the ground, and I think it will eventually. I’m an executive producer on it. And eventually, I’ll do something. The last thing I did was before the pandemic. In 2022, I’ve just been focused on the foundation and family business. But I’m not out of the business. I just haven’t been doing anything right now. I’ve been focusing on the mission of the Gary Sinise Foundation and getting us moved from California to Nashville. Gary and The Lieutenant Dan Band will be performing at The Park at Harlinsdale Farm on Saturday, November 4 for Family Day. NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/TH OMP SO N S STAT I O N

Serving Up Greek With A Side Of Love In Spring Hill ARTICLE BY JESSICA WAYMAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Grecian Family Restaurant & Bakery

M UST SE E | FOOD + BEV E RAGE

The word pillar has two meanings – one being a distinctive feature of Greek architecture and the other being someone you can rely on for support and strength. Undeniably, Frank and Sasa Georgalos are pillars of their community. Coincidentally, they are also Greek. Frank grew up in upstate New York where he learned the ins and outs of the restaurant business, attended culinary school and eventually became a chef. Sasa was born and raised in beautiful Athens, Greece. Eventually, life brought them together and led them to middle Tennessee where they purchased Grecian Family Restaurant in 2015. After the Georgaloses took ownership, they enhanced the menu adding more authentic Greek dishes like pastitsio and moussaka. In 2018, they were able to expand their walls and add breakfast and bakery items to the menu. Favorites for breakfast are omelets, sausage and gravy and Greek Sweet Bread French Toast – a Grecian Family Restaurant original. Of course, gyros and chicken souvlaki are at the top of the list. Sasa calls the baklava cheesecake one of the most beautiful things that they make. She knows Baklava, and Frank knows cheesecake. “It’s our baby!,” Sasa joked. Grecian Family Restaurant and Bakery has won several local awards over the past years such as Williamson’s Best 2021 for Best Mediterranean and Best of Spring

Hill and Thompson’s Station 2020 for Best All-Around Restaurant among others. Not only do the Georgaloses create award-winning food, but they also participate in numerous charities, fundraisers and operate their own pay-it-forward meal program in their restaurant. Their generosity may be known best, however, by their annual Free Thanksgiving Meal event. Every Thanksgiving, they close the restaurant doors to regular business and open their arms to people who want to share the holiday with them, whether they’re in need or want to lend a hand. “It doesn’t matter if you’re poor, if you’re sick, if you’re alone, if you’re old,” Sasa says. “If you’re working that day and you’re not going to be with family, and you need something that reminds you of Thanksgiving, you’re welcome to come and eat here.” You’re also welcome to come pick it up. If you’re unable to do either of those, they will bring it to you. Volunteers will deliver as far as fifteen miles away. They feed emergency rooms, police departments, fire departments and many more. Last year, they provided free Thanksgiving dinners to a whopping 1,400 people who either did not have a meal or could not be at their own. Their project, proudly, had around eighty volunteers. “We spend Thanksgiving with a lot of people now,” Sasa laughs. CONTINUED >

The community did not forget Frank when he experienced his own moment of need earlier this year. Health issues took Frank out of the kitchen he so dearly loves and demanded a stay in the hospital and time off his feet. Friends and loved ones started a GoFundMe account and held a fundraiser at the very restaurant where Frank and Sasa have raised funds and spread love and generosity for so many others. “We really appreciate everything everyone did for us,” says Sasa. “It was unbelievable.” Despite this bump in the road, Frank and Sasa continue to give back. Preparations are well underway for the 6th Annual Free Thanksgiving Meal. RestaurantSpringHill.com

Gather Set t ing th e Fa l l Tabl e

The Traditional Table Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table.

For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top of a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. The Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware.

It’s Pumpkin Bread Season

The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort

Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/2 teaspoon ginger • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin • 1 1/2 cups sugar • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil • 1/2 cup melted butter • 2 eggs Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside. 3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup. 4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined. 5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy. 6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended. 7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal. 8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.
