As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids! Our Kids and Family Issue is chock-full of stories about children and the families that make up our amazing corner of the world. Jenny Mollen is equal parts, author, fun mom, and dictator. Well...dictator of her kids lunches that is. We sit down with Jenny as she tells us about her new books. In this issue, we are highlighting kids who are making a difference in our community. We learn the history of Columbia Academy, spend the day with "Spiderman", and hang out with some women who rock real estate! As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love.

Quality education is a cornerstone of an enhanced quality of life and since 1979 Columbia Academy (CA) has been preparing students to pursue their dreams, wherever their life journeys take them. CA serves more than 1,100 students on two campuses: the historic, 67-acre primary campus in the heart of Columbia for grades preschool – 12 and the intimate Spring Hill campus for grades preschool – 6. The Columbia campus housed the Columbia Arsenal from the time it was built in 1890 until 1905 when it became Columbia Military Academy. In 1979, the military academy board transferred the institution to a board representing local churches of Christ and the school has operated as Columbia Academy ever since. The Spring Hill campus opened in 2010 to better serve a student body with growing representation form Spring Hill and Thompson’s Station. Located at 756 Beechcroft Rd., the school operates out of a repurposed building that once served as a training facility for GM mechanics. “There were only 30 students when the Spring Hill campus opened but that number today is 160,” says Columbia Academy president, Dr. James Thomas. “It’s a great fit for families where the parents work in Franklin or Brentwood because they can enroll their children at an established school without having to make daily transportation arrangements to Columbia.” According to Dr. Thomas, families choose Columbia Academy for challenging academics in a nurturing

environment, a curriculum that’s taught from a Christian perspective and a wide range of extracurricular activities including drama, music and athletics. “Private schools have the freedom to teach in a way that is meaningful to the families they serve,” says Dr. Thomas, a 1992 CA graduate now in his 14th year at the helm of his alma mater. “As a Christian school, we have the freedom to teach bible every day and to pray with our students. We’re free to act in the student’s best interest and that’s appealing to many of our families. In addition, we prioritize safety which is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Before they can learn, we must ensure that our students are safe.” Dr. Thomas calls the Spring Hill campus, “The happiest school in Tennessee. Happy students, teachers and families. Our principal, Nathan Hixson, knows everyone in the school community by name. We’re proud of that and we try to duplicate it in Columbia, but on a larger scale.” Once enrolled at the Spring Hill campus, that student is a full-fledged Columbia Academy Bulldog and is guaranteed a spot at CA for the balance of his or her secondary education. CA also has bus service available from Spring Hill and Berry Farms for the roughly 20-minute ride into Columbia. “It is a real blessing to reach out to these growing communities and spread our mission,” says Dr. Thomas. “It sounds like a cliché but there’s a sense of family at Columbia Academy.” CABulldogs.org

Actress Jennifer Jones once said, "If you could choose one characteristic that would get you through life, choose a sense of humor." Well, self-deprecating entertainer Jenny Mollen got the memo. Her sense of humor permeates her many talents and is infectious. Actress, writer, influencer and New York Times bestselling author, Mollen tackles her latest two book projects with wit and playfulness. Dictator Lunches: Inspired Meals That Will Compel Even the Toughest of (Tyrants) Children, due out mid-September is Jenny's first foray into the kitchen with a book of healthy recipe ideas for kiddos. Maria Dinoia with Franklin Lifestyle (FL): LET'S TALK ABOUT DICTATOR LUNCHES FIRST. TELL ME HOW YOU APPEAL TO MOMS WITH IT. Jenny Mollen (JM): Well, I started out just messing around in my kitchen. It was me bored at night. I don't know how to turn my television on, so my kids would go to sleep and I would just be rummaging for snacks in the kitchen and know that I had to make lunch for the next day. And I was like, 'okay, well, how can I make this fun? How can I entertain myself?' And then I started getting notes from the teachers and they were like, 'You can't send a pork bun with instructions on how to reheat it for lunch. We don't have time to do that. I would send fondue one day. I'm like, 'Could you reheat the cheese for me'? But through doing it, it really became a way for me to not only push my son's boundaries in terms of what he ate, it was a way to communicate with him. It was a sublimation of my own guilt as a working mom. I could show up and have this dialogue with him, even when I wasn't there. Even when I'm not the one picking him up after school. I'm a latchkey kid. I come from two parents who work days and dated nights. So for me, food has always been so important and food equals love. And I always wanted to be the kid with the handwritten note. So this is my way of doing that for them. FL: SO WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR KIDS' MEAL INSPIRATION FROM? Jenny: Literally, it's whatever I have in the house. I look at the fridge and I'm like, 'What can I do?' Let's say I have leftover fried rice. I'm like, 'Okay, I'm going to go with a full-on trip to China theme. I'm not a good cook. I'm not somebody who is a professional chef. I am also lefthanded. So if I can do this, any mom can do this. This is really curation more than anything else. And for instance, one of these rice characters, I'll take a mold, I'll put the rice into the bear. I flip it onto the plate. And that's it. There's not a lot of steps. And even in the book, I don't do recipes that are crazy. It just starts with just staring into the fridge and saying, 'What's a story I could tell?'

FL: DID YOU ALWAYS FEEL THIS WAY ABOUT FOOD? JM: Well, here's the thing: My dad is a sports medicine doc. We never had red meat. He doesn't eat red meat. I didn't eat chicken until I was in college. Diet and exercise has always played a huge role in my life. And I didn't know, at 15 years old that everybody didn't go home after school every day and not have to go on a run, go on a walk, or do something for their bodies. So I did grow up with more of a heightened awareness on health and fitness and diet and exercise. As opposed to my husband {actor Jason Biggs} who's from north Jersey who grew up eating processed cheese and learned what romaine lettuce was at the age of 25. And I just knew all along that I was going to feed my kids the way I eat. I'm not going to dumb it down for them. I have faith that they can rise to the challenge. I also want to expose them to every possible thing I can expose them to food wise while they're this age, while they're still growing and developing their palette and then later on they can do whatever they plan to do. FL: WHAT ABOUT SUGAR? JM: I get scared when I start talking about it and people think my kids don't eat sugar and it's like, 'No, my kids eat sugar every day. That's why I have to be woke about it. Because the rest of their diet is completely sugar. I know it's polarizing. I know some moms definitely are like, 'Whoa, I don't want to...' They always say to me, 'There's such a disparity between the hot mess that you present on your Instagram page and then this sort of neurotic food-obsessed mom on the other. And I'm like 'They can be together. They can live simultaneously. I just want them to eat real food. I mean Jason's a foodie so he can get behind this because he loves eating everything. He wants to taste everything. He thinks he's Anthony Bourdain. He's traveling to places unknown to eat crickets and whatever. So I just want them to have that spirit of adventure with food because I just think it makes for a well-rounded palette life person. FL: LET'S NOW TALK CITY OF LIKES. HOW MUCH OF THE BOOK IS BASED IN TRUTH? BECAUSE IT'S ABOUT SOMEONE JUST LIKE YOU WITH TWO KIDS WHO FALLS INTO THE INFLUENCER WORLD. IT'S TOUTED AS FICTION, BUT HOW MUCH OF IT IS BASED IN TRUTH? JM: A lot of it is true. And now that I've written fiction, I believe that every writer is just writing their truth over and over and over again but calling it fiction. Because this book is I think, Jason's always joking, but I think this book is more honest than either of my first two memoirs. It's my mommy issues on steroids. It's my darkest fears. And I think that I get into some of my most vulnerable truths in this book that I really couldn't have written in CONTINUED >

“It would give me anxiety because I just kept thinking if I’m so busy curating parenthood online, how present am I in my real life for my actual kids? Even when it’s just a fun picture I want to capture, am I doing it for them or am I doing it for me?”

the other two or as memoir in general, because I would be protective of the people in my life. I wouldn't want to hurt their feelings. Even though the opening of my second book does start 'Names have been changed except for my mom. Her name is Peggy.' FL: WHEN DID YOU FIRST DECIDE THAT YOU WANTED TO TACKLE BEING AN INFLUENCER? JM: I fell into it accidentally, to be honest. I had my second son, I moved to New York with a following really that started on Twitter. I mean, Twitter really launched my career because in that particular time, 2010, Twitter democratized comedy for female writers in L.A. and all of a sudden people were getting book deals off of just having a big following and telling funny jokes in however many characters or less that it used to be. I think it's changed now, but I think it used to be 140. And I used to think in Tweets. So unlike LA, where the currency is really fame and you're only as popular as the last pilot you shot, I moved to New York at a time when, if you had a following, like I did of females between the ages of 18 to 35, you could really monetize that. And brands would approach you. And I found myself selling maxi pads and posing for the cover of Parents magazine and doing all these wacky things that sort of pushed me into that world that I never really went searching for. None of us did, the influencing thing, it sort of happened to all of us. One day we were posting pictures of our feet on vacation and the next thing you know, you're selling dog food. It really just happened to us. And I always laugh because if in high school, somebody had asked what I wanted to do when I grew up, I would never have said, 'well what I want to do is just post pictures of my life and document myself, picking a chin zit in the middle of the night while also making money for it.' FL: YOU'RE A PODCAST HOST, YOU'RE AN AUTHOR. YOU'RE AN ACTRESS. YOU'RE AN INSTAGRAM PERSONALITY. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE ROLE BESIDES MOM AND WIFE, OF COURSE? I think at the end of the day, I'm just a writer. It's like all the other stuff, nothing fills me like that. So that is really my true passion. Once I found writing, and once I wrote my first book, I was like, 'I'm never going back to acting. Why did I ever think that would be fun?' I hate being held hostage on the set. I get food anxiety when I'm stuck in a trailer and I'm like, 'All there is is this last granola bar and we're here until tomorrow.' It's so stressful. And there are so many cooks in the kitchen. It's almost like I don't want to facilitate somebody else's story when I could tell my own. And that might sound so narcissistic, but you know, as a writer, you create the world. There's so much freedom and so much creativity. JennyMollen.com Instagram: @dictatorlunches @jennymollen

MAGNOLIA FARMS ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH FEITEN

The Perfect Place To Say “I Do”

Set on 40 acres in the rolling green hills of Tennessee, sits picturesque wedding venue Magnolia Farms. Sometimes weddings go by in the blink of an eye, with couples barely having time to take it all in, but the team at Magnolia Farms goes the extra mile to provide couples the opportunity to not only bring their dream wedding to life, but also allow them to soak up every minute of the celebration. Known for its “Southern charm mixed with modern amenities” the Eagleville property has served as a venue for 13 years before being renamed Magnolia Farms in January of 2020. Magnolia Farms is unique in that couples can not only enjoy their special day on the property, they can also celebrate and prepare all weekend long with their family, friends, and bridal party in the two historic homes, built in the 1800s. “We’ve got our two-day package and then we also have a three-day package,” explains Operations Manager Ann Catherine Blackburn. “The benefit of that is if they have a Saturday wedding, they can check in Friday at noon, so they can get settled and decorate and get comfortable with the space and really have plenty of time to make it their own and make it unique with all of their decorations. They also are able to have their rehearsal and rehearsal dinner onsite. We really try to make that a priority." The ability to not only stay in these onsite accommodations, but also enjoy these events leading up to the big day, brings a sense of calm to an often times chaotic weekend.

26

LOCA L’S CH OICE | L IFE + CULTURE

By having everything in one location, couples can spend more time creating cherished memories with loved ones and providing ease to out of town family and friends, rather than stressing over details and spending time running around to all of the festivities that accompany their wedding day. In addition to making the weekend as easy as possible, Magnolia Farms provides an experience that focuses on the charm of the area by helping connect couples with vendors that are local to the area. With 30 weddings scheduled for this year, the venue is about to enter into fall, which is their busiest season of the year. Under new ownership as of June 1st, Magnolia Farms is undergoing improvements and renovations, including adding a pavilion to host outdoor, covered weddings as well as plans to offer a third house to accommodate guests in 2023. The new ideas go beyond just their wedding clientele. “[The new owners have] a lot of ideas of how to incorporate the community even more,” says Blackburn. “Whether it be a little harvest festival or just events for the community and kids, like a movie night. Back in March, we had a really fun craft fair that was hosted by Maker’s Market Tennessee. It was so fun to just see all these small businesses that are in the area bring all of their products and have a little booth at Magnolia Farms. It’s fun just to see the town grow.” MagnoliaFarmsEvents.com

I think that was the best thing we did, making him so it could be anybody under that costume.” In 2021, an anonymous Columbia resident was determined to decrease some of the tension caused by the pandemic and politics by putting on the Spiderman costume gifted by his boss. When he put on the suit and felt its power of positivity, he knew what he had to do. He was inspired by others around the country who have made an impact on their community in the red and blue suit. So he officially became the friendly neighborhood Muletown Spiderman. It’s now his “great responsibility” to put a smile on all of the civilians of Columbia. Muletown Spiderman can be seen in the square meeting fans, especially on the weekends. He’s thrilled to be able to make people laugh and brighten their day. He loves when people yell out “Spiderman!” and then ask for a picture. Local shops like Tin Cottage and Smith & York Co. have been extremely supportive of his mission. Marianne at Tin Cottage says, “Muletown Spiderman and MJ have definitely become a fixture in the Downtown Columbia scene. Local kiddos come in on First Fridays looking for the webbed crusader and Spiderman always has time to stop for selfies! There’s always excitement when he is in the shop.” After gaining popularity around town, he now provides entertainment for birthday parties and events. Spiderman says, “I have been practicing flips and those are still hard for me, but I can do somersaults and can climb up and hold onto walls and do poses.” He continues, “I’ve discovered I’m really flexible, so I can go down low on my legs like Spiderman does when he shoots his webs.” Muletown Spiderman’s favorite movie is “Spider-Man: No Way Home” since it features three of the actors who have played Spider-Man. On his days off from spider duties, he is a house boat builder just outside of Columbia. He recently moved in with his new fiancé, who he calls his Mary Jane. For Mule Day, she and his friends all dressed up in his Spiderman costumes to join the festivities downtown. After all, as Miles Morales says, “Anyone can wear the mask.”

Splash Making A Big Splash Locally

"We believe that learning to swim is a lot like learning a language. You need to continue to work at it consistently to develop proficiency. We encourage families not to see it as an activity just for summer, but something that is refined through the fall and winter months." These great words of advice are spoken by 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Davis Tarwater, owner of two local SafeSplash Swimming Schools, a franchise company originated in Denver. With one location in Cool Springs, the other in West Nashville, they offer lessons for infants, toddlers, children, and adults. CONTINUED >

Davis adds, “As someone who has had a lifetime love of the water, and an extremely fulfilling career as a professional swimmer, this was the perfect opportunity to pair my passion and business interests in a way that serves families in the Nashville and Franklin communities.” SafeSplash Cool Springs opened just over a year ago and Davis explains that while the opening was delayed due to supply chain issues, they’re now building their staff to meet the needs of a greater number of children, teens, and adults. “We are constantly looking for highly motivated, responsible instructors who love working with kids and bring that passion to work every day,” he says. Lessons are 30 minutes with a 3-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio for people of all abilities. Students range in age from six months to adults; the majority under age five. Davis notes, “At SafeSplash, families can expect small class sizes, a responsive and accommodating staff, and consistent skill tracking so parents and kids can follow with a clear understanding of the skills worked on each week.” He continues, “Our main goal at SafeSplash is to instill a life skill that leads to a healthy respect and enjoyment of the water. We understand not all kids will want to pursue an athletic career in swimming, but we do believe they should have the opportunity to learn to swim correctly.” Semi-private and private lessons are also available for those looking for a more personalized experience, and for kiddos with special needs. “We take pride in meeting kids and families where they are and catering a class type and curriculum to everyone coming through our doors. We know that swimming is a life skill® and that all children are safer and happier when they learn the basics of water safety.” There’s no better way to dive into fall! SafeSplash.com

Joyfull Arcade A GAMER’S PARADISE IN SPRING HILL

ARTICLE BY KATIE SHANDS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Williamson County native Nathan Mallory never planned on opening an arcade, but when he resigned from an executive position in April 2021, he began asking for help from above to reveal the next step for his career. “The entire business plan came to me at once,” Mallory says. “The name, the floor plan, the business model, the reasoning, even the scripture it would be named after [John 15:11 …that your joy may be full]. I stayed up all night writing it down.” The only problem—he and his wife had no extra money to invest into a new business venture. Mallory says his wife was totally against the idea until God spoke to her about the matter. “The Lord replied to her, ‘Why are you worried about money? I can provide. Check your mail.’” Inside the mailbox, she found an envelope full of cash from an anonymous donor.

This happened two more times that week, all addressed From Your Friend. The money kept coming as close friends and family pooled their resources, and in February 2022, Joyfull Arcade opened for business. “We’ve created a fun, safe, and very cool place for gamers of all ages, focusing on the ‘play together’ aspect of gaming,” Mallory says. The consoles and PCs are linked by more than 40 in-house accounts, enabling everyone in the arcade to play the same game simultaneously with the push of a button. According to Mallory, this is a unique concept in the industry. “Even our software company that serves hundreds of amusement parks and arcades says there’s no one doing what we’re doing.” There’s truly something for everyone at Joyfull Arcade. If you’re a fan of retro games, you’ll want

to check out the 10 custom-built arcade towers that offer more than 10,000 games from the 1970s to the 2000s. For music lovers, there’s a Rock Band room with special-edition instruments and surround-sound. The arcade also has motion cockpit simulators, 12 gaming PCs, and 5K virtual reality with the same headsets used by NASA and SpaceX for training. Private party rooms are available, as well as couches and massive screens that make Joyfull Arcade the perfect hangout spot. Mallory and his team have worked hard to create a safe and welcoming environment for gamers. If you want to join in the fun, stop by the arcade at 2001 Campbell Station Parkway, Suite 4A in Spring Hill. JoyfullArcade.com

THE TREMAYNE GROUP

What happens when you bring together a group of smart, motivated, and dedicated Realtor® moms from Franklin, Spring Hill, and Thompson’s Station? You get The Tremayne Group at Ten Oaks Real Estate - a professional real estate team that “Works Here, Lives Here, Shops Here.” Team lead Amy Tremayne states, “We know these communities. We are at the same pool, dance classes, and schools as your children.” Many on the team also specialize in niche areas of real estate so collaboration is critically important in meeting and exceeding their client's needs. Amy and her team are quickly becoming known for their award-winning service and as a valuable resource for new homeowners and residents. The Tremayne Group at Ten Oaks RE's strategic methods help both sellers and buyers. Each seller's listing includes professional staging, measurement, signage and photographs. Their targeted marketing campaign includes scheduled open houses and social media posts. Using these combined strategies, Amy is able to secure top dollar offers for her sellers. Strategies for buyers include partnering with local lenders which allows for faster closings. Completion of a walk-and-talk

inspection makes offers more appealing as contingencies may be waived. Knowing the market allows the team to enter competitive offers and avoid appraisal gap issues. Amy laughs, “We are not kidding when we say we are the eyes, ears, and nose of real estate. We check everything for you - whether it is an in-person or a virtual showing!” From contract to close, Amy and her team are there every step of the way ensuring that timelines and schedules are being met on behalf of their clients. “Together, let’s find your dream home” is not just a tagline. Amy is committed to helping buyers and sellers and her efforts are being recognized. This year, Amy was named a “Top 5% Nashville Real Producer” by Nashville Real Producers and the Ten Oaks Real Estate “May and June Top Real Estate Producer” nationwide. When not working or studying for her brokers license, Amy can be found driving her daughter to dance, swim or gymnastics and hanging out with her family. LUXURY DESIGNS THAT FIT YOUR LIFESTYLE Sebring Design Build, which started in the Western suburbs of Chicago over 23 years ago, focuses on managing every aspect of home building, remodelling and interior design. In addition to only hiring the most highly talented craftsmen and other tradesmen, Bryan Sebring also believes the people on his team need to have strong ethical values. “The culture in the company is really important,” says Bryan. “I’m building a business here in Tennessee, and I’ve had

about 150 interviews with subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers in order to look at their work and make sure the quality is there. That’s important, but it’s also about the relationships I have with them that they’re people I can trust. Character is the number one thing I look for when hiring because I’m sending them out to peoples’ homes.” Bryan also strongly values family, and decided to move with his wife and children to Franklin in 2020 so his

daughter, Brye, could pursue her musical career. “Work-life balance is very important to me,” he says. “I worked very hard in my business and especially early on before I had kids. I have four now and as they grew up, I made it my focus to go to their sporting events and all of their plays. I wasn’t going to miss anything.” Relocating to the area, he says, turned out to be a great move for both his family and his business. “The people are so kind and generous and nice, and that’s what we wanted. We live in Westhaven, and we love our community. People are friendly and it’s just so peaceful.” Shown below are just a few examples of the amazing work that Sebring Design Build can do. In the first kitchen pictured,

“the homeowners were tired of their nonfunctional, outdated kitchen,” says Victoria Pelly-Lauer, AKBD, the designer on the project. “The goal was to transform the space into a high-end, accessory-filled space, perfect for having multiple family gatherings.” The quartz countertops, high-end appliances, custom cabinetry, and large island certainly gave them that.” When completed, she says the family gave them a 5-star review. “We listened to their priorities and made sure each was incorporated into the design. They mentioned we were able to finish the project within the time frame they were expecting, as well as provide quick and effective solutions when unexpected issues popped up.” SebringDesignBuild.com CONTINUED >
