LIFESTYLE LETTER
Women Celebrating Women Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence with oneself, but at the same time, being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them too. The stories you read in this issue are all written with women as the primary focus. Actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth, our cover story, shares how she was part of a new book to be released later this month, My Moment, a compilation of women's awakening stories when they answered the question 'What was the moment in your life when you first realized you were ready to fight for yourself?' Wow. We're also sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We recognize a few local entrepreneurs and women who are finding ways to give back to our community. I always love putting together this issue. But it certainly made me think that women deserve to be recognized more than once a year. Women are the backbone of our society. Look around in your everyday life, think about the women who have made an impact, and ask yourself ‘What woman influenced me the most?’ Then, if possible, reach out to them and thank them for their impact on your life. Warmly,

Secrets of Sisterhood and Success
Lisa Culp Taylor

O UR TOWN | R EAL ESTATE
“Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success.” –Albert Schweitzer (Theologian) If true, Lisa Culp Taylor and the LCT Team - Parks are the epitome of success. The current female team of 18 has grown organically, providing real estate services to many throughout Middle Tennessee. Lisa takes no credit for the supportive culture she has created. The LCT Team is a group of good-spirited people who cheer on each other’s successes and help each other out when one needs support. “No two people are exactly alike on our team. It is the differences in our personalities that make us stronger. We need balance and we get that from each other,” states Lisa. While the team has a shared love of real estate, architecture, and design, their relationships extend beyond that of typical co-workers. Together they hold spontaneous confetti cannon celebrations, attend monthly after-hours team-planned events, and Lisa frequently treats the team to out-of-office experiences and annual retreats. During their most recent Christmas outing, they considered skipping the dinner they had planned and opting instead to stay in the rented Sprinter van so they could continue laughing, singing, and enjoying each other's company. “That is as much a part of our team as selling real estate.” Lisa’s first introduction to real estate was accompanying her father, a local realtor, to open houses. She loved hanging out in model homes and looking at floor plans with her dad. Lisa worked in new home construction, underwriting, and new home development. With each experience providing her advanced knowledge of how real estate worked, she was still uncertain about starting her own real estate team. Not one to look back with regret, Lisa wishes she had cast away her doubts and started the LCT
Team earlier. The camaraderie and sense of family has been such a positive force. Jokingly Lisa states, “I graduated in the bottom 1% of my class - not because I was dumb - I just wasn’t motivated.” Lisa envisions creating a program she can bring to high school students to showcase successful career options which may not follow the traditional four-year college degree path. While many believe real estate is just showing pretty houses and client dinners, there is an unbelievable amount of work that happens behind the scenes for the buyer’s and seller's protection. “There is no secret sauce. The truth of the matter is, it is a lot of hard work but it is a career that if you put your mind to it, you can do it.” As proof, Lisa shares the journey of one LCT Team member who went from cleaning houses to top producer without a college degree. “Sometimes just being happy is a success. I think we put so much emphasis on if you're successful it's because you’re making a lot of money or because people know who you are. But success is just being happy and being around other people who are happy - having somebody believe in you and having the confidence to believe in yourself.” It is Lisa’s firm belief, “If you always help other people it always comes back to you.” That kindness extends to animals as well. Lisa is very passionate and active in animal rescue and fostering, including adopting her own rescued dogs, one of whom was born blind. “My dogs are my babies.” Lisa loves and spoils animals as much as she loves and spoils her team. Lisa Culp Taylor and the sisterhood of the LCT Team have proven that happiness truly is the key to success. LisaCulpTaylor.com

Therapeutic Hands Massage
Massages are a great way to treat yourself or a loved one to a little restorative relaxation – something you may want to keep in mind for a special mom in your life that would delight in some pampering as a Mother’s Day treat. Therapeutic Hands Massage, owned by licensed massage therapist Casey Lauritsen, is the place to go in Spring Hill to feel relaxed, happy and healthy. The daughter of a chiropractor, Casey grew up in the Franklin area and developed a special interest in the body and massage therapy from a very young age. “I love that someone can come in with excruciating pain or a migraine, and when they leave, they just kind of smile, and they’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve never felt so good.’ That is an amazing feeling to be able to know that you helped somebody in that way,” said Casey. After working for a while in sports and deep tissue massage including work with the Tennessee Titans, Casey and her family moved to Spring Hill. One day, she came across what would become the space for her studio on Main Street and decided to bring work closer to home. It couldn’t have worked out better for them as the space also includes On the Brink Fitness owned by her husband, Brent Brinkmeier. It’s a one-stop-shop for anyone who wants to condition their body and then soothe and calm their muscles and mind all in one visit. Therapeutic Hands Massage is a calm, peaceful massage studio made up of seven therapy rooms, a couples massage room,
and a treatment room where customers receive luxurious treatments like seaweed salt scrubs and chocolate fondue wraps – an indulgent way to hydrate and nourish the body’s skin. With six other licensed massage therapists on staff, Therapeutic Hands Massage offers a range of massages custom-designed to meet the needs of each individual guest and a variety of body treatments that are sure to send you out into the world feeling refreshed and restored. INDULGE IN THE EXPERIENCE Aside from single therapeutic massages, Therapeutic Hands Massage offers an array of different massages to experience including: Couples Massage – Enjoy relaxation and togetherness while receiving side-by-side custom therapeutic massages. Cold Stone Face Massage – Relieve headaches and sinus pressure with the combined use of massage techniques and cold marble stones. Hot Stone Massage – Indulge in a full-body massage using the soothing and restorative qualities of smooth, warm stones. Warm Bamboo Massage – Allow deep tissue and Swedish techniques combined with the use of warm baboo rods to help relieve pain and heal muscles.

Kristin Chenoweth On Her ‘Moment’ ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA
Kristin Chenoweth has built a memorable career spanning film, television and stage. From Olive Snook in "Pushing Daisies" and April Rhodes in "Glee" to the original Glinda in 'Wicked,' her talent knows no bounds. The Tony and Emmy Award winner tackles a new project this month as a contributor to the newly-released compilation of essays, entitled My Moment: 106 Women on Fighting for Themselves. Chenoweth explains how her latest endeavor came to fruition. "One of my very closest friends is singer/songwriter Chely Wright. We were talking one day and we were gonna write a song called '"Run, Hide, Fight" about what women do when confronted with something that we don't want to be confronted with. And she asked me a question - 'Do you remember the first time that you fought for yourself?' I said no. We asked Kathy Najimy - 'Do you remember the first time you fought for yourself?' She said no. We asked Linda Perry and Lauren Blitzer. One of them said, 'I have to think about mine'. It took me a while, but I had eventually written mine down. I've always been scared of it because I didn't want people to view me as weak or any of the things that people would say. I was scared. Then Kathy wrote hers. Lauren said, 'We need to make a coffee table book and ask all or our famous and non-famous friends the same question. So we did. The stories we got back were so special. Gloria
Steinem, Carol Burnett, Mary Trump, supermodels, an Indian girl who escaped her father's abuse. I'm gonna say it's probably one of the more important things I have done in my career." Chenoweth also recently released her first children's book, What Will I Do With My Love Today? that's been heralded by critics as 'heartwarming,' 'sweet,' and 'meaningful.' She tells the story of how that book came to be. "New York was hit hard by the pandemic. And after eight weeks, I decided I was going to write. But I didn't know what I was going to write. So I was talking to my rescue dog Thunder and said, 'What are we going to do with ourselves today? We couldn't breathe on anyone, touch anyone or even smile (with our masks on), so I thought, 'What are we going to do with our LOVE today then? I thought at first it might be a song. But it turned into a book about how people rescue each other. I'm adopted and I was rescued by my parents. Thunder is a rescue dog and I rescued her, although she rescues me more. It's about us taking on Manhattan and doing random acts of kindness." So does she have a favorite role? Singer, actress, author? She says, "I'm a hybrid. But I love a live audience! When I stand in front of the Nashville symphony and I sing my truth - I love opera, I love musical theatre, I love country, I love pop, traditional, standards - I listen to the audience CONTINUED >

and they speak back to me. It's a relationship that I love. Live entertainment is my favorite." Speaking of Nashville, Chenoweth is now an official resident. "I have no living room furniture or extra bedroom furniture. I can use my kitchen, but I never use my kitchen anyway," she reveals. "I would say to you by August, after some film and TV and other projects, I should be there full-time." Chenoweth is also a passionate supporter of the arts. Ten years ago, after a state-of-the-art performance center was built in her hometown of Broken Arrow, OK with her name on it, her dad said to her, 'You gotta do something with that.' So she started Kristin Chenoweth's Broadway Boot Camp, now in its seventh year. "You audition online and come for one or two weeks to learn from Broadway and television's best. We've had kids from 32 states and 22 countries learning singing, acting, dancing, songwriting, tech, anything media. I'm going to add ad-libbing soon. It's a fun, hard, fabulous and wonderful summer arts program. It's everything I dreamed it could be and it just continues to grow." OfficialKristinChenoweth.com

Empowering Women A ROADMAP TO SUCCESS FOR BODY AND MIND
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BETH MILLER

G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS
Candice Storley has always led an active lifestyle. She grew up swimming competitively, doing CrossFit and then went on to pursue professional careers in both show water skiing and aerial arts. In order to stay on top of her game as a performer, she focused on both fitness and nutrition for overall wellness. Today she is a Functional Strength Training and Nutrition Coach and owner of Prism Strength who is passionate about sharing her knowledge with other women. “My mission with Prism Strength is to empower women by building their strength, which bleeds into their self-confidence and their abilities inside and outside of physical fitness,” she says. “I want women to know that they are capable and really powerful. As women, we are in high demand from both our families and our careers,” says Candice. “I take that into account with each person's program and training session. We aren’t squeezing our lives into our fitness and wellness journey; instead, we are integrating our training and nutrition habits into our existing life.”
To do this, she gives women a coaching “roadmap” that is tailored to their particular goals and lifestyle. Candice’s other focus is to make the process fun and enjoyable, something women will want to do on a long-term basis. “I like to encourage clients to supplement their strength training with other things that they enjoy doing, such as yoga or hiking,” she says. She really loves working with people, and offers both online and in-person training. Clients who live in and around Thompson’s Station have the ability to come to her personal gym, which she greatly encourages. “My partner Joey and I just bought our first home here last year and it’s on six acres,” she says. “In addition to the house, we have an extra building on the property that we turned into an awesome gym since we both love to work out. The gym and property have everything you could need to meet your fitness goals. It's the coolest set up and I'm really excited to be able to share that with other people.” PrismStrength.com

AFTER LEAVING EVERYTHING SHE HAD WORKED FOR TO SAVE HERSELF, VALERIE HOPKINS BUILT A THRIVING BUSINESS ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BENNHOFF | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
AND HELPS OTHERS DO THE SAME
Valerie Hopkins believes any woman can succeed in business, regardless of her circumstances. She should know. Eighteen months ago, Hopkins left a harmful marriage with only her two young children and the clothes on her back. “I wasn’t even wearing shoes that day,” she says. For years she had been spray tanning friends and burying the money they paid her in her backyard so it wouldn’t be taken away. “It took seven years to get the guts to leave and all I had was my tanning skills. My son said, ‘Mom, you gotta have skills to pay the bills!’” After settling with her kids in an apartment, she upgraded her products and watched YouTube videos on how to start a tanning business. Her clientele grew. “My ‘salon’ was actually my bedroom that I turned into a tanning salon during the day. Clients came for a tan and ‘therapy,’ We’d talk and catch up. I was exhausted from trying to heal, trying to help my kids heal and still make money. Sometimes I wanted to throw in the towel.”
28

Instead she wrote down her goals. “I wanted to provide nicer things for my kids, get a car, see my family in Connecticut." Those dreams are slowly happening. “I never thought I’d be this lucky,” she says. “I made it because of the people who supported me. Now I’m able to give back.” Hopkins donates to organizations that help women move out of bad situations. “The more I give, the more I get back. It’s insane! I would never want to go through that period again,” she says, “but I know I was meant to go through it for a higher purpose.” Her business, Wanderlust Spray Tans, shares space with J&J Beauty Company in Spring Hill. She uses alcohol-free products that won’t dry the skin, and she provides scent drops and powders. She also offers clear solutions that don’t stain clothes, perfect for brides. Mobile tanning is available by appointment. “Women need to know they can get through tough times and be successful, as long as they surround themselves with good people. I’m here to help.” WanderlustSprayTans.com

HOW THE WELL OUTREACH IS HELPING TO REDUCE FOOD SCARCITY WITH DIGNITY Started 16 years ago when Spring Hill had a population of 11,000 residents, The Well Outreach began as a small church ministry food pantry to help feed people in crisis. Now boasting 50,000 residents, the city of Spring Hill welcomed The Well Outreach to its permanent 7,000 square foot facility on 5306 Main Street two weeks before COVID started to force closures. The 501(c)3 nonprofit was forced to pivot and began offering drive-through food pick-up services.
As one of only a few food organizations without qualifiers or geographic boundaries, and the only food ministry with day, evening, and weekend hours, the Well is excited to finally open its doors to those in need. Its motto, “It takes a community to feed a community” highlights the need for volunteer support as well as its focus on feeding the working poor. Serving those facing food scarcity with the highest level of excellence and dignity,

The Well offers its guests access to a unique open-shop client-choice food pantry. Guests are invited into the lobby for a cup of coffee and to visit the welcome center. Executive Director Shelly Sassen states, “To a lot of people what we give away is food but what we really try to give away is hope through the medium of food.” Using a shopping cart, guests are able to select the items they want from the open shelves. Currently, 500-600 families are served each month. Guests can also pick up household, elder care, baby and hygiene items.
The Well also provides nutritious, non-perishable, brand-name food for the weekend to children of food-deficient households through their JetPack program. The cool drawstring backpacks are distributed to 25 schools and 850 students each week during the school year. To understand the value of The Well Outreach is to understand that one in seven children in Tennessee faces hunger. Unfortunately, we cannot “see” food scarcity and many of us are unaware of our neighbors in need. SpringHillWell.org

Over 500 miles from Nashville sits the quant village of Glen Ellyn, Illinois. A suburb located 24 miles straight west of downtown Chicago, it’s a great place to raise a family right in America’s Heartland. But when someone living there had already made a significant impact in Nashville with her soulful voice and musical talents, what does her family - who has supported her career from day one – decide to do? They move to Nashville, of course. That “someone” is 18-year-old independent music artist Brye Sebring, whose parents, Jenny and Bryan, made the decision in March 2020 to move their family – Brye, Brayden, Bryce, and Brock, from Glen Ellyn to Nashville. Says Brye, “My family has been insanely supportive of my music! Before I had any team members, my parents were my team. They were with me during every label interview, helped me buy equipment, and came to every performance.” On an interesting side note, her father Bryan has kept his successful Naperville, Illinoisbased home building and remodeling business, Sebring Design Build, going strong while also growing a solid business presence in Tennessee. Brye currently has seven songs on streaming platforms, and will be releasing an EP (extended play) with six new songs. “LEMONS” has racked up over 35 million streams on Spotify alone, and “Apocalypse” hit a half-million streams a few months ago and is still going strong. Notes Brye, “I’m signed to a distribution company, Imperial, under Republic Records, and they do an incredible job of getting my music out.” She adds, “We have a good family friend who knows the industry really well. He set up a phone conversation with Janet Weir of 42 Entertainment/Red Light Management in Nashville, who also manages Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd. They weren’t looking to work with any other artists, but after meeting me and my parents they decided they would take me on.” “My entire team is based in Nashville, and in the short time I’ve lived here, I’ve met so many writers and producers who I just adore,” says Brye. “I never would have found those connections in an Illinois suburb. Thanks to Nashville, I have learned so much about the industry, production, and my own music.” BryeMusic.com/@BryeMusic
