Welcome to the inaugural issue of Thompson’s Station Lifestyle - also serving parts of Spring Hill! You are probably wondering, “What is this magazine about and why am I getting this?” Thompson’s Station/ Spring Hill Lifestyle is all about you and your community. You’ll notice we also feature the stories of businesses and events outside your local area (Franklin, Nashville, Columbia, etc), but these stories are important as they are part of the greater Nashville area we all call home and support. Covering events and happenings, businesses, local experiences, places to go, things to do, and more, my goal is to bring people together - to let you know a little bit more about the people you call neighbors. You can read more about me and why I am passionate about being able to share with you the stories of the people, events and businesses in our area on page 42. But I want to know about you! What makes Thompson’s Station and Spring Hill the place you want to call home? What are your favorite things to do around town? What do you love about your community? Do you have an interesting story to share or know of an upcoming community event? Now that the holidays and new year celebrations are behind us (as well as hopefully the snowy roads) February is time to fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) but remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. We would love to hear from you!

Brandon Lay ARTICLE JESSICA WAYMAN PHOTOGRAPHY DANIELLE DEL VALLE

Country artist Brandon Lay experienced what he calls a “eureka moment” after the first show he played while in college. Originally from Jackson, Tennessee, Brandon packed up his rock-meets-country sound, and brought it to the Nashville area in 2010. He established himself in iconic Music City hotspots like Douglas Corner and The Bluebird Café, eventually giving us songs to love like “Speakers, Bleachers and Preachers” and “Wilder Horses.” These days, Brandon is busy writing

and recording new music, including eight fresh new songs, enjoying his 48-acre home in Spring Hill, and spending time with his wife, Nicole, his son, Ryder (3), and his daughter, Lara June (19 months). “I’ve spent a lot of this down time getting back to my roots. I started out in bar bands, so I’m trying to get back to some of those sounds.” Brandon shared with us some of the music that influenced him as an artist and some of his most meaningful originals. TAKE IT EASY

GO BACK

by Jackson Browne – “Being on the road for months at a time, you start to go crazy. That song kind of centers me a little bit. I’d be out in Arizona or wherever and hear that song and know that I’m not doing something that no one else has ever done before.”

by Bob Seger – “When I hear that song, I think of Destin, Florida in 2002. I was going through a breakup with my middle school girlfriend. She’d given me her dad’s Bob Seger greatest hits CD and broke up with me. That song always reminds me of that spring break trip.”

by Kenny Chesney – “That was the first time I felt like a country artist was really singing about me. Lyrics have always meant a lot to me, but that was the first time I was old enough to start living the songs.”

BREAK DOWN ON ME by Brandon Lay – “I wrote it at my kitchen table one night. I always look forward to playing that live. Everything is so loud, then bringing it back to that song is almost lullaby-like.”

STARTIN’ YOUNG

MORE I’M FOR

by Brandon Lay – I feel like songwriters in general, especially me, put the past on a pedestal. Everything was so rosy and cool. ‘Startin’ Young’ is kind of nostalgic but it also feels a little uplifting. It’s a celebration of youth.”

by Brandon Lay – “That song’s over twelve years old, but I feel like I recently recorded it. I feel like it’s more timely now than ever. It’s a positive message that there’s a lot in this world that I’m against, but there’s still more I’m for.”

Looking for the perfect family fun day just minutes from Thompson’s Station and Spring Hill? Mistletoe Farm is loads of fun because of one adorable animal, or should I say 21 exuberant alpacas! Owners Tom and Leanne Butchko have opened their farm to the public for private tours to enjoy these jubilant creatures. Located just 20 minutes southeast of downtown Franklin between Arno Road and I-840, this 15-acre farm is a dream for animal lovers. But how did a couple of accountants end up with an alpaca farm? Tennessee native, Leanne, and Tom, who grew up in Pennsylvania, had lived in historic 1830’s original homestead in Franklin. Their two youngest daughters had left for college, and they discovered a way to fill their empty-nest syndrome. Leanne explains, “Clients of our accounting firm expressed an interest in becoming alpaca breeders, and we were asked to study the business model and make recommendations. The clients chose not to pursue the venture realizing the amount of work and commitment necessary to properly operate a working farm, but these city folks were hooked." “Neither of us grew up on a farm, but I had experience working on a farm where I boarded my horse in exchange for doing farm chores. The alpacas became an interest of ours, and we bought the farm in 2004 to begin raising these amazing creatures.” Native to South America, alpacas began importation in the late 1980s. Most of the alpacas in the United

States are from Peru, with a smaller percentage from Chile and Bolivia. The fact that they were transported by air made it an expensive process. Leanne shares the history. “Alpacas are part of the camelid family along with camels and llamas. However, the alpaca while resembling the llama is much smaller and more friendly. The llama will carry a pack and could be used for navigating rougher terrain and trails. Their fiber is not as desired as the alpaca which are primarily raised for their luxurious fiber. Peru is still the largest producer of alpaca fiber in the world." Leanne is a smart financier. To launch the farm, she entered an essay contest that was judged by one of the largest alpaca breeders in the U.S. stating why she should “win” an alpaca. Her essay won and their first male was delivered on the first transport from Oregon. Their herd grew to as many as 60 alpacas, but they have found that the best balance to their lifestyle is attained by managing a herd of about 20-25. “We came up with the name ‘Mistletoe’ because there is a significant amount of mistletoe growing in the treetops behind our “boys” barn. The boy alpacas are kept separate from the girls until it’s time to mate. Mistletoe Farm depicts a young girl, who is one of our granddaughters, kissing one of our very first alpacas. We decided to use ‘kiss my alpacas’ as our logo ever since.” “Alpacas are incredibly smart and clean animals, but are largely defenseless. They could kick, surprisingly in

most any direction, but generally will not do so. They could spit, but only on bad people, says my husband. The llama on the other hand, doesn’t seem to be particularly against a quick and unannounced spit.” To protect their herd, they have two beautiful Great Pyrenees guard dogs, Ivy and Delilah. They also have help, thanks to their farm manager, Julie Trcka. The alpacas were an appealing choice for the Butchkos for many reasons. They are not an “end of life” livestock, meaning that they do not get slaughtered. They are small enough to manage, about 150 pounds, and are easy to handle. Leanne has halter-trained them to walk on a lead. They are ruminants, which means they are efficient eaters. They are also extremely healthy, which makes them more affordable to care for. Leanne says, “Even their ‘poop’ is sought after as one of the best garden fertilizers available. It will compost in a noticeably short period of time. Their feet are padded just like a dog, so combined with their lighter weight and reduced food consumption, they are easy on the pastureland. The alpaca is often described as eco-friendly.” The biggest bonus in raising alpacas is that they pay their way by giving up their coat of highly desired fleece which can grow up to 4-5 inches annually around their whole body. Their annual haircut is done by a professional shearer, and will produce 5-10 pounds of the luxurious fiber. Their fur is four times warmer than wool and easily maintained with no harsh chemicals. Unlike sheep and other fiber-bearing animals, the alpaca fiber does not contain lanolin. It is the lanolin which requires the use of the harsh chemicals to get the fiber clean and what can cause allergic reactions in some people. Additionally, it is water resistant, flame-retardant, and hypoallergenic. When you visit Mistletoe Farm, as many people from Spring Hill and Thompson’s Station do, you will get the opportunity to visit Leanne’s store and see all the wonderful products available for sale using the fleece. Leanne makes all types

18

M UST SE E | L IFE + CU LTURE

of items with the fleece including hats, scarfs, gloves, socks, head warmers, shoe inserts, and dryer balls. She says, “We process a percentage of it here on the farm, some at local co-ops and the rest at a U.S. fiber mill. None of the fur goes to waste. Even the leftover amounts make for a great weed barrier in our dye garden. We also put some in our bird houses, and constantly replenish them as the local birds love it for their nests.” Their female herd of 13 produces about three to five babies a year, and they try to sell about the same number. Some want alpacas to be a part of their existing farm, some want alpacas just for their fiber, and others want to jump in with both feet and become breeders. Leanne’s recommendation for anyone interested in raising alpacas would be to visit many farms. Alpacas are herd animals and thrive with buddies so it’s better to start with at least three so they feel safe. Then determine what type of farm you want to have based on barn and pasture size, along with finances. It’s easier to stick with one gender so as not to require two separate facilities. Also, they stay much healthier not co-habitating with other farm animals. They also tend to “graze” all the time, so they would not get enough to eat if there were just specific feeding times. Unlike most other livestock, they will not overeat so there is hay available 24/7/365, even in the months when they are eating pasture. In addition to tours that begin again in May, Mistletoe Farm hosts bridal parties, engagements, homeschool events, and senior living trips. Their alpacas have even appeared in two music videos, and Alpha made it on an album cover. Leanne says, “The alpacas have changed our lives in so many ways. I tell people it's our fur therapy! We love to share the joy and happiness they bring us with people of every age. The smiles and joy we see in our visitors bring us lots of happiness.” Leanne and her lovable alpacas are a delight for all ages! Follow them @mistletoefarm for the most fun you will find on Instagram MistletoeFarmAlpacas.com.

ARTICLE SUE BALDANI

Years ago, dining rooms were often formal affairs that were only used for company and special occasions. Today, people want to take full advantage of all the space in their homes and need dining rooms that are comfortable and inviting for the entire family. “Clients often want something more casual, but they still want a touch of formality and a touch of glam to make it a little more special,” says Patti Lynn Sharp, owner of An Inside Job Interior Design. “For example, the table itself might be a glorified farmhouse table, but then when we pair that with fully upholstered chairs, it feels more glamorous.” Many people have shied away from upholstered chairs in the past for fear that they would become worn and stained. However, the materials used these days are high-performance fabrics that hold up well and can be easily cleaned. Slipcovers are also popular, says Patti, since they can be taken off, laundered and replaced. In addition to the table and chairs mentioned above, adding a simple chandelier and a pretty flower arrangement can create a beautiful space to entertain your guests. But this same room can also be used by kids for doing homework and hanging out with their friends. Over the past year and a half, dining rooms have become especially popular places to gather with

family and friends to eat, play games, and socialize. They have also functioned as classrooms and offices. Patti was always talented at seeing how she could make a space look, feel and function better. After obtaining her B.A. and M.A. in interior design, and then spending almost 20 years working at other architectural and design firms, she decided to go out on her own. An Inside Job Interior Design was founded in Nashville two years ago. “We offer space planning, remodels, renovations – everything from start to finish,” says Patti. Whether an entire house or a oneroom remodel, she works closely with her clients to understand first how they live, and then designs plans from there. Her studio is located in a dedicated building on her farm, where she lives with her husband Wayne. “I have this crazy double life,” says Patti. “We have a farm in Centerville, which is about an hour west of Nashville, and we’re raising alpacas and growing vegetables. Fridays are saved for harvesting, and on Saturdays, I head to the local farmer’s market to sell our produce.” She is also developing a line of home goods with pillows, throws, blankets and more which will be made from the very fine and soft fiber from her Suri alpacas. You can see many photos of Patti’s designs, and of course, her adorable alpacas, on Facebook at @aninsidejobinteriordesign.

Evins Mill A Mountain Experience Minutes from Nashville 24

F E AT U R E | TR AVEL

Nestled among the forested bluffs and meandering streams of Tennessee’s Highland Rim and Cumberland Plateau, Evins Mill is the ideal place to unplug and unwind. The 40-acre, privately owned historic property is conveniently located just an hour-and-a-half from Franklin in Smithville, Tennessee. From its humble beginnings in 1824 as Lockhart’s Mill to the current scenic resort, the pristine beauty of this designated State Natural Area has remained unchanged and boasts one of the few Eastern Hemlock forests in the region. Upon arrival, take a moment (or ten) to appreciate your surroundings - Edison lights strung in the trees, resting nooks with rocking chairs, statuary, and the architecture of the historic buildings. Take another moment to enjoy the quiet sounds of nature while breathing in the fresh air before you are warmly greeted by one of the seasoned staff members. Pick up your picnic box lunch and walk to the picnic area or enjoy lunch on the porch while sitting amongst the treetops. Plan to tackle one, or both, of the trails that lead to Carmac Falls. The North Trail leads to the most spectacular view of Carmac Falls from above while the South Trail leads to its base. While one does not need to be an experienced hiker, caution is recommended as the trails are unsurfaced and wooded. The South Trail’s final descent is steep and, in one stretch, borders a precipice. But if you go, you will be greatly rewarded for your efforts. Because the property is private and limited in the number of guests, visiting Carmac Falls is akin to enjoying your own private waterfall.

The Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville is one of the largest antiques and horticultural events in the country. It makes its highly anticipated return later this month (after a year off from Covid) at the Music City Center in downtown Nashville. Keynoting the event is entrepreneur, bestselling author and Emmy Awardwinning television show host Martha Stewart. The show typically draws more than 15,000 attendees annually to experience its impressive showcase of antiques from more than 150 dealers, world-class landscaped gardens, and opportunities to engage with some of the nation’s top names in design and horticulture. Chairs Ashley Smith and Julia Spickard have selected the 2022 show’s theme to be “Home is where your story begins” and are thrilled to announce an exceptional lineup of featured speakers and moderators that bridge the entertaining, gardening and design worlds. Show proceeds benefit Cheekwood Estate and Gardens and ECON Charities, which serves charitable organizations to better communities in the Greater Nashville area.

California transplants Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin met when they both moved to Nashville over five years ago. Brought together by a mutual friend, it was friendship at first text, and business partnership immediately thereafter, when the duo launched The Home Edit with the goal of reinventing traditional organizing by merging function with design. Since then, they have organized the homes of Khloe Kardashian, Mandy Moore, and Gwyneth Paltrow, built an Instagram following of over five million people, filmed their own Emmy-nominated Netflix series, “Get Organized with The Home Edit,” alongside Reese Witherspoon’s network Hello Sunshine, and released three books, including New York Times bestsellers, The Home Edit: A Guide to Organizing and Realizing Your House Goals and The Home Edit Life: The No-Guilt Guide to Owning What You Want and Organizing Everything.

Winter Foot Health

ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HOME + DE S I GN

“Running! If there’s any activity happier, more exhilarating, more nourishing to the imagination, I can’t think of what it might be. In running, the mind flees with the body, the mysterious efflorescence of language seems to pulse in the brain, in rhythm with our feet and the swinging of our arms.” – Joyce Carol Oates Test this out, on any given day, in any season, and count how many people you see jogging or running in your neighborhood. Running is, perhaps, the most popular physical activity worldwide with almost 60 million participating in the U.S. alone, according to Statista.com. People run for different reasons, top of which are keeping healthy, staying in shape, relieving stress and for fun. With the cold winter months approaching, are there particular things people need to consider when running in colder weather? We asked Dr. Cary Gannon, a board-certified podiatric surgeon with offices in Spring Hill and Franklin, to give us her expert advice. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING? I have been practicing for 14 years and have spent my entire post-graduate career in Franklin. I ran track and cross country at Auburn University, where I developed an interest in the lower extremity. WHAT ARE MAIN THINGS YOU TREAT PEOPLE FOR? We see a great deal of plantar fasciitis and heel pain, ingrown toenails, bunions, hammertoes and stress fractures. We do a lot of diabetic foot care, wound care and elder care for things like severe fungal toenails. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS TO KEEP FEET HEALTHY IN GENERAL AND FOR RUNNING IN WINTER? Shoes that fit properly are critical. Too often, I see people wearing shoes that are far too small. The foot requires ample room to expand during a run.

Proper attire is also a must. We recommend dry natural fiber socks, headgear and layered clothing. Compression gear, such as compression socks, sleeves or pants are also important for recirculating blood and for aiding recovery. DO YOU SEE ANY DIFFERENCES WITH CONDITIONS OF RUNNERS COMING TO SEE YOU IN WINTER AS OPPOSED TO SUMMER? I always see more injuries in summer as opposed to winter. People who run during the winter are typically seasoned runners who have been training for quite some time. Novice runners generally commit when the weather is nice. Oftentimes, these newly focused athletes develop plantar fasciitis, stress fractures and other injuries simply because their bodies are not accustomed to training. ABOUT CARY GANNON Dr. Gannon was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and now lives in Williamson County with her two daughters. She studied at Auburn University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, and was a competitive member of Auburn’s Track and Cross Country teams. She attained All Southeastern Conference (SEC) Scholar Athlete honors while achieving varsity letter awards in Track and Cross Country all four years of eligibility. Her experience as a Division I runner led Dr. Gannon to pursue the pathology of the foot and ankle and guided her to the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. After becoming a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, she attained chief resident status at Southeast General Hospital – a partner of the University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio – where she amassed over 1,200 surgical procedures specific to the lower extremity. FUN FACTS WITH DR. GANNON Q: Why did you choose your field of specialty? I ran track and cross country at Auburn University and became interested in injuries affecting my teammates. While at Auburn, I shadowed Auburn's team Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. James Andrews who encouraged me to consider treating the smaller bones of the hands or feet. I chose feet! Q: My first year was... Hectic. I had a new born baby and new medical practice. I don't think I slept for about four years! Q: What's the best career advice you ever received? Set personal boundaries. You can't do everything. Q: What is your hobby or indulgence of choice? This is so embarrassing...I watch zit-popping videos on YouTube.

MEET ATHENA WEST: THOMPSON'S STATION PUBLISHER ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. My name is Athena West. No... I am not Greek (though I try my best to live up to the strong Greek name I was given). My father was taking an elective in Greek Mythology in college when I was born. I was supposed to be "Kimberly." but at the last minute my Dad convinced my Mom to change it. I have a husband who is just as much my friend as he is my spouse. We really just like each other! We have two teenagers who I love... but couldn't be more different from each other. The "nature vs. nurture" argument is an easy answer for me. Nature! Raised the same... very different personalities, interests, etc. We moved to the Middle TN area on a whim eight years ago and it was the best spontaneous decision we made for our family. We are embedded in the community and love everything about Tennessee.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN PUBLISHING? I am a former television journalist who was a reporter at three stations until I decided I didn't want to be the next Barbara Walters! There is a lot of glitz and glamor in the TV business.... but there is a lot of burn-out! There is a saying in television news..."If it bleeds it leads." I loved reporting on the "feel good stories" about community at the end of every newscast. So when I moved to Tennessee, I decided I wanted to use my journalism and love of story-telling by owning and publishing Franklin Lifestyle in 2016. I am now honored to be able to tell the stories of the people, events, and businesses in the growing Thompson's Station and Spring Hill areas.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT? I think accomplishments are just stops along the journey. I don't have a favorite accomplishment. I am just true to my gut instincts, beliefs, and the internal moral compass that exists in all of us. We just have to listen to it. We have a saying in our house that comes from the great Wayne Gretzky: "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." I love helping and encouraging others to take a leap of faith. I take pride in helping others succeed and being a part of their journey.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS FOR THE MAGAZINE? Many hands make light work. I want input from business owners, residents and readers to feel like this is their magazine. To tell their stories and give people the opportunity to 'tell the story behind the story.' I am always in learning mode and I encourage emails, ideas, and feedback. Perhaps something readers read will spark a friendship, a laugh, and support for each other. Welcome to Thompson's Station Lifestyle.
