Letter From the Editor Sixth century: Byzantine silk garments. Twelfth century: long, flowing medieval gowns. Sixteenth century: Tudor ruffs. Nineteenth century: bustles. Twenty-first century: athleisure. A brief glance at these broad examples of on-trend sartorial pieces through the centuries hints at what many fashion historians have concluded: Thougrson’s article spotlights!) But this is not a fashion history dissertation—thankfully. It’s none other than our long-awaited annual Style issue! From a feast-for-the-eyes Scotland travel diary to a tailored menswear forecast, local floral arranging and a behind-the-scenes look at boutique life, this September issue is filled with stylish moments to appreciate. As our fall calendars fill and temperatures (hopefully) drop in the coming months, we hope the following pages serve as inspiration for how to style the remainder of 2026.

tones, neutral palettes and abundant natural light. Seamless indoor-outdoor flow defines the home, from the welcoming front porch to a covered patio and second-story balcony. An oversized gourmet kitchen serves as the home's hub. Four bedrooms and four full baths include a downstairs guest suite, with a game room adding flexibility for growing or multigenerational families. Rich hardwood flooring and custom lighting add refined detail throughout, keeping the home move-in ready for its next family. The home sits steps from Village Green Park's trails, pools and our community’s top-rated schools.

59 FREESIA COURT, CREEKSIDE PARK JO ANNE JOHNSON REAL ESTATE GROUP

This Mediterranean-inspired retreat fuses traditional and modern lines into a home built for luxury and comfort. The backyard oasis steals the show, pairing a summer kitchen with a pool and spa and a large pergola that faces a permanent nature reserve, with no rear neighbors in sight. Fresh paint and new carpet update the interior, and the oversized greenbelt lot in Pondera Point puts nature trails, ponds and parks within walking distance. Inside, a light, bright layout carries that same ease, and the exterior makes

an equally strong first impression. The home suits buyers who want privacy and nature views close to Woodlands amenities.

38 LEGATO WAY, CARLTON WOODS NICKLAUS MIKE SEDER GROUP

Custom built by Stephen Hann on a 1.78-acre cul-de-sac lot, this European-inspired estate showcases a level of detail rarely seen today: a limestone staircase, carved ceilings and a tile roof. The backyard reads like a private resort, with a heated pool and spa, koi pond, outdoor kitchen and a one-bed, onebath guest casita. Inside, a recently updated kitchen, five new AC units, a media room and two game rooms keep the home as functional as it is impressive. The homeowner also gains access to The Club at Carlton Woods, including its golf course, tennis courts and fitness center. The home sold in 18 days, proof that classic craftsmanship still commands attention in guard-gated Carlton Woods.

A RANGE OF WOODLANDS STYLE

From Mediterranean elegance to European grandeur, these properties span the full range of Woodlands style, no two homes ever quite the same.

The best way to wrap your arms around such a multi-faceted destination is by taking on a wee bit of driving. The Return of the Well-Dressed Man

ARTICLE BY TRAVIS HAGER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Fall 2026 26

M UST SE E | S HO P P I NG

For the past several years, men’s fashion has leaned heavily toward comfort, minimalism and an almost deliberate lack of effort. Many trace the shift back to Covid. Fall 2026 marks a clear change. Men are beginning to look dressed again. This is not a return to stiff suits, narrow ties or overly formal wardrobes. The new direction is relaxed, useful and easy to wear. Tailoring is returning with softer construction. Knitwear is becoming more important. Colors are getting warmer. Rugged pieces are being cleaned up and made more refined. At the UNTUCKit location in The Woodlands, Store Manager Miguel Cardenas sees firsthand what local men are looking for: clothes that feel polished, fit properly and work across several parts of the day. That matters in a community where a man may move from an office to dinner, a school event or a weekend gathering without changing his entire wardrobe. The strongest Fall 2026 trend is the return of tailoring. Sport coats, structured shirts and tailored trousers are appearing with more frequency, and the proportions are changing. Jackets feel less rigid. Trousers have more room through the leg. Shirts sit closer to the body without becoming tight. The result feels cleaner and more modern. For most men, the easiest way to adopt the trend is through one good sport coat worn over a button-down, knit polo or lightweight sweater. Paired with dark denim or a well-cut chino, it creates a finished look without feeling corporate.

“The broader lesson for Fall 2026 is simple: men do not need more clothing. They need better coordination.” Rugged clothing is also becoming more refined. Field jackets, overshirts, suede, corduroy and military-inspired pieces remain popular, and the best versions avoid costume. A lightweight overshirt in olive, tobacco or navy can add depth to a simple outfit and still make sense for a Texas fall. Knitwear will play a larger role this season. Quarter-zips, textured crewnecks, knit polos and lightweight cardigans are replacing the basic sweatshirt as the dependable extra layer. In The Woodlands, where autumn often arrives slowly, fine-gauge knits and breathable fabrics are more useful than heavy sweaters. They can be worn alone on cooler mornings or layered under a jacket once the temperature drops. Color is also moving in a warmer direction. Brown, camel, olive, gray and burgundy will form the foundation of many fall wardrobes. Burgundy may be the easiest update for men who usually wear navy, black or blue. It works well in shirts, sweaters, polos and accessories without demanding too much attention. Brighter accents will appear as well. Mustard, cobalt, pale blue, orange and muted pink can bring energy to a wardrobe, especially when used in one piece at a time. The goal is not to rebuild everything. A single patterned shirt, richer knit or distinctive jacket can make familiar trousers and shoes feel current again. Accessories are returning too. Watches, textured belts, signet rings, scarves and stronger eyewear give men a way to

28

M UST SE E | S HO P P I NG

participate in fashion without changing their entire silhouette. The best approach is restraint. One thoughtful detail usually does more than several competing ones. Another influence is the more literary side of menswear: softer collars, corduroy trousers, relaxed cardigans and vintage-inspired eyewear. Runway versions may look theatrical, but the everyday interpretation is approachable. It gives familiar preppy clothing more texture and personality, especially when paired with modern fit and uncomplicated footwear. The broader lesson for Fall 2026 is simple: men do not need more clothing. They need better coordination. A useful fall wardrobe can be built around six dependable pieces: a well-fitting button-down, a relaxed sport coat, a refined overshirt, a lightweight knit, a proper trouser and one item with color or pattern. Each should work with the others. Each should move easily between business, travel, dinner and the weekend. That is where a store like UNTUCKit becomes relevant. The brand’s focus on shirts designed to be worn untucked gives men a practical starting point, and The Woodlands location allows them to build outward from fit rather than guesswork. Fall 2026 will reward men who look intentional. Not overdressed. Not theatrical. Simply considered.

B E HIND T HE B OU T IQ UE DISCOVERING THE HISTORY AND HEART OF MONKEE’S OF THE WOODLANDS

ARTICLE BY AUNIKA ANDERSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAITE ZAPALAC PHOTOGRAPHY

As shoppers enter a boutique, they’re greeted by thoughtfully arranged displays, hand-selected collections and perhaps the subtle aroma of a fresh candle. What they may not realize is that they’re participating in a timeless tradition. The boutique as we know it today flourished during the 1960s, but the idea behind it evolved over centuries—from the textile marketplaces of ancient Greece and Rome to the elegant Parisian storefronts that helped define luxury shopping in the early 1800s. The word boutique—derived from the French word for “shop”—didn't become widely used in English until the 1950s, and yet the philosophy behind it has endured. Today, boutiques remain places where style is thoughtfully chosen, relationships are cultivated, and every visit feels intentionally personal.

MORE THAN A STOREFRONT

At Monkee’s of The Woodlands, Kristin and Dan Durski have embraced that tradition, creating a boutique where fashion, hospitality and community come together. “I hope people immediately feel welcomed, comfortable, and inspired when they walk through our doors,” says Kristin. “We want our store to feel like more than a place to shop—it should feel personal, uplifting, and fun. Whether someone is looking for a special outfit or simply stopping in to browse, I want her to leave feeling more confident than when she arrived.” Reflecting a distinctly Southern sense of style, Monkee’s offers a carefully selected assortment of apparel, footwear and accessories designed to elevate everyday wardrobes with timeless color and sophistication. “We curate our clothing, shoes, accessories, and gifts to bring our customers pieces that feel special, stylish, and wearable,” says Kristin. For Kristin, opening a boutique wasn’t simply a business opportunity—it was the realization of a lifelong dream. A love of fashion began in childhood, while her grandfather, himself a small business owner, inspired her entrepreneurial spirit and showed her the value of building something that reflected both passion and purpose. “Whether we are finding the perfect outfit for a special occasion, refreshing someone’s everyday wardrobe, or simply creating a welcoming place for women to shop and connect, those personal moments are what make the experience so meaningful,” says Kristin.

THE HEART OF THE BOUTIQUE

Beyond being places for fashion, boutiques become woven into the fabric of the communities they serve. For Kristin, that connection is one of the

most rewarding aspects of owning a boutique in The Woodlands. “I love getting to know our customers personally— learning about their style, their lives, and the occasions they are shopping for,” says Kristin. “It is rewarding to become a trusted part of their wardrobes and to create an experience that feels personal, welcoming, and rooted in the community.” That sense of connection extends well beyond the walls of the boutique. Supporting local charities and organizations throughout Montgomery County is an important part of the Durskis’ mission, reinforcing their belief that a boutique should contribute to the community just as much as it serves it.

LOOKING AHEAD

Fashion will evolve with the seasons, but the essence of a boutique remains consistent: genuine connection. They are places where customers are known by name, where shopping becomes an experience rather than a transaction, and where local businesses help shape the character of a community. For the Durskis, that’s what makes the work worthwhile. In an era of endless online options and fast-moving trends, boutiques continue to remind us that style is at its best when it’s personal.

“Being a boutique owner in The Woodlands means having the opportunity to build something of my own while becoming part of a community I truly care about,” says Kristin.

Imagine bold western hues braided into soft greenery and romantic blooms. The Velvet West is Piney Rose’s newest collection for fall 2026, drawing inspiration from the modern country edge of Ella Langley while embracing the timeless warmth and femininity of Olivia Dean. Each season, the Piney Rose team brainstorms and transforms various artistic avenues into floral designs that feel both nostalgic and fresh. Behind every arrangement is a thoughtful creative process built on inspiration, color and carefully chosen blooms.

INSPIRATION

Every collection begins long before the first stem is arranged. Owners Taylor and Cullen Handfelt, alongside their talented design team, spend countless hours

gathering inspiration from customer favorites, seasonal trends and the signature Piney Rose style. A mood board filled with textures, colors, artwork and music helps shape the vision before a single flower is selected.

PALETTE

Once the concept is established, the team builds a color palette that brings the story to life. While arranging flowers may appear effortless, each combination is intentionally crafted to create balance and emotion. In The Velvet West, pieces such as "Gilded West" pair warm toffee tones with vibrant blues and pinks for a wild, western feel that still feels elegant. Turquoise, mauve and beige accents woven through ribbons and decorative vessels complete the collection’s vintage-inspired aesthetic.

BLOOMS "Crimson Trail" from the fall 2026 "The Velvet West" collection.

With the palette in place, the flowers take center stage. Piney Rose sources blooms from around the world, including Holland and Ecuador, ensuring each arrangement features fresh, high-quality stems. Beloved flowers like sunflowers are thoughtfully paired with complementary blooms and greenery, considering color, texture, shape and dimension to create designs that feel full of movement and personality. From weddings and anniversaries to birthdays and thoughtful “just because” moments, every Piney Rose arrangement is created to celebrate life’s milestones. More than a floral shop, Piney Rose is a place where creativity and hospitality flourish together. As the team shares, “Everything we do is guided by our core values of service, trust, innovation and respect.” Its dedication to the community continues throughout their contributions to local nonprofits as well as providing a free delivery service to customers throughout The Woodlands. With every new season comes another opportunity to turn inspiration into something beautiful—one bouquet at a time.”

Mary Beth McGinnis Takes Art to a New Frontier ARTICLE BY CAROL MOWDY BOND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARY BETH MCGINNIS

The Woodlands Arts Council is introducing a new vision for its annual fall show. Formerly known as the Texas Fine Craft Show, the event debuts Sept. 26-27 with a new name, The Woodlands Fine Craft, Art & Design Show. The transition embraces art and design beyond fine craft alone, but with a longstanding commitment to exceptional craftsmanship. At this curated, indoor event, patrons will revel in wearable design and jewelry, art and sculpture, and fine craft and home décor. Among this fall’s artists is the incredibly talented, Houston-based Mary Beth McGinnis of McMB’s Studios. McGinnis holds a math degree and worked in tech, building database applications on different platforms while nurturing her lifelong passion as an artist. She transitioned away from tech into art and its application to furniture. And now she rebuilds and recovers furniture pieces by hand with intense detail.

These days McGinnis is creating work that’s innovative and uniquely her own, and functional in all categories—art, living, sustainability. We asked her to tell us about the genesis of her original designs and processes including her commissioned works. TWCL: How did you get started in the art world? MBM: When I was five to six years old, we lived in Afghanistan. I loved the colors and patterns in the paintings and carpets. I drew these designs in school and in my spare time. Mom recognized my artistic passion, and she went out of her way to find me art classes outside of school, even into high school. When I retired from my tech career, I took adult education painting classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. This helped with what I’m doing now and encouraged me to think outside the box. My husband and I bought our first house, and I hand-painted our china pattern between crown and picture moldings in our dining room, marbleized pillars, and painted clouds on our newborn son’s ceiling. I moved on to painting canvas floor cloths and Monet-inspired scenes on cabinet knobs. TWCL: Discuss your art project that was a finalist in Australia’s 2000 Mosman Art Prize exhibit. MBM: My husband got staffed for 10 months on a Sydney, Australia, project. I bought art supplies and studied most of the original Cubist artists and their approaches to Cubism. I spent my time in Australia creating Cubist paintings of our children. The one that was selected for the Mosman Art Prize exhibit was a painting of our daughter dancing in the garden. TWCL: How did you transfer your art into furniture? MBM: After finding a couple of cool chairs at a garage sale and choosing fabrics, an upholsterer negatively judged my fabric choices.

Annoyed and frustrated, I needed to learn how to upholster because who needs the judgment? A one-weekend upholstery class and a beginning tool set gave me the courage to try and taught me the basic skills I needed. I thought I’d just do the dining room chairs, but upon completion, I felt so empowered by being able to do whatever I wanted that I couldn’t stop there. Our daughter is an accomplished artist, and I found a place where I could get her paintings printed on upholstery fabric. That was the first step to it becoming art. I collaborated with other artists such as Elisa Boughner, an amazing Illinois artist who does landscapes, florals, interiors, etc. This expanded my capability and vision—I was seeking to do something truly innovative and unique. I started studying fashion and fine art. I taught myself to sew, rug tuft and metal leaf. Every time I learn a new concept, the possibilities endlessly expand. TWCL: Discuss the fusion of art, living and sustainability. MBM: A lot of fabulous, old chairs are ending up in landfills, when all they need is a little TLC, glue, a subversive screw or two, new stuffing and a new lease on life. I feel like they’ve already experienced hardships. My goal is to make them strong, beautiful and the center of attention. My preference is for the strong foundation in older solid pieces. The chairs I use for projects are heavy, solid wood pieces, but they have many more years left in them. The ones I take in are unique and substantial. The same goes for textiles. I source the finest durable fabrics. TWCL: Describe the satisfaction and fulfillment you find in your completed work. MBM: I put my heart and soul into each piece. All my pieces are 100% functional. No cheap frames, no cheap textiles. My style is random, eclectic, adventurous, fun, unexpected, non-traditional. I love all my children—artistic and reality. I get great joy

out of each piece I finish. But once completed, after a bit of separation and a glass of wine, I’ll nod my head and think,“Yup, that’s a good one!” TWCL: What can visitors expect at your venue in the 2026 Fine Craft, Art & Design Show? MBM: The same textile and furniture quality with some new concepts. I’m adding drips, splats, flowers, etc., in a street-art kind of style. It’ll be fun! TWCL: What do you see for your future projects? MBM: The sky’s the limit. S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/TH E WO O D L A N D S
