In Search of Style

“Fashions fade, style is eternal.” — Yves Saint Laurent

Welcome to the Style Issue.

I, for one, am a firm believer that "to each his own" and especially with style. I have always admired how people come into their own style - especially musicians, artists and other creative souls, not afraid to put their talents out there and start something new - a brand new idea, building their illustrious repertoire - and accidentally starting a brand new trend.

This issue is filled with just that - those that weren't afraid to start their own gig - taking the risk of displaying their creativity for others to admire or not. Designers, stylists, artists, boutique owners, architects of the future, etc., helping build The Woodlands community into the style mecca that it has become.  The Woodlands is made up of a melting pot of people from all over Texas, the U.S. and the world. We are fortunate to have received an abundance of goods that seamlessly mesh together. International restaurants, shops, dealerships, galleries, etc. - each offering their own piece of the "style pie."

Fashion plays a role in life - sometimes in ways we would not have imagined. Our fundraising story illustrates just that. Style translates into whimsical, wondrous ways to promote helping others.

I have included quite a few design experts in this issue. Take advantage so you don't experience what I call, "Fashion frustrate."  For example, I am a graphic designer and have a simple, minimalistic style when it comes to the page layout, white space, pops of color and letting photos speak for themselves. However, I cannot design my own marketing materials to save my life. This is because, my taste is always on the move depending upon the latest color scheme, font or design that I see.

Sit back, take a breather and enjoy our September "Style" issue.  Lights, Camera, Fashion!

A Meditative State

When people stop to look at Curt Baldwin’s paintings they get lost in the ambience.  Sublime boats on calm water, the distorted lines of their reflections, a moment of bliss, it’s all about how they make you feel. “Your mind drifts off to exactly where it’s supposed to go, it’s this perfect meditative state,” Baldwin tells me.

Growing up in a lakeside community near the Irish Hills in Michigan, meant endless dog days spent on the water and the freedom which came with it, “an abandoned summer camp was our playground, all my best friends are from the lake,” Baldwin reminisces. His paintings

of boats are dreamy with the occasional nod to sailing know-how, “Rule One” shows a girl with her arm draped over the side of the boat, there’s a tan line where a ring should be, “the lake steals anything valuable, so the first thing you do when you get to the lake is take off your jewelry,” Baldwin laughs, “that’s rule one!”   Other favorites include “The Tubers”- a couple float in true Texas tubing style sporting a cowboy hat and a baseball cap, “The Lifeboat” is in a similar style, with the essential cooler floating in its own tube. Sometimes the paintings are named after the boats, which in turn, are named after the family who owns them, as that’s how they are known to the community, others are named after their engine sizes and memorable moments on the water.

Taking watercolor lessons from a lady on the beach at the age of 15, led to studying art at school, then on

"The Wikoff"
"The Lifeboat"

to working as a graphic artist and web designer, the culmination of all these has resulted in his dreamlike style which he describes as “a balance between minimalism meets abstraction.” In these oil on canvas works, there are no horizons or tree lines, its simply the craft and its illusionary echo in the water. Baldwin paints mostly wooden boats, and the occasional canoe, he works in oil on canvas on panels he stretches, and strip frames his work with custom stained wood which is complementary to the wood of the boats.

Restoring boats has always been a way of life for Baldwin, “The Brass Lass” is a Penn Yan boat he was restoring when he met the love of his life, Maria.  “The Brass Lass” became an important foundation of their love story and marriage, carrying Maria to the shore in her wedding dress for their waterside wedding by the lake. The couple are now excited to welcome twins, I wonder if we will see twin boats in some of Baldwins future work?

Baldwin thrives on the interaction between the people he meets at the many festivals where he displays his work, he is a V.I.P. exhibiting artist at The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival and is currently working on new paintings for September shows in St Louis and Kansas. His advice to upcoming artists is “Paint what you love.”

and Fashion Architecture, Art

Allison Moore is an artist at heart who has always loved to paint, draw, craft and design, so the foray into starting Atelier Haus Interiors was the perfect collaboration. An Atelier Haus is a private studio or workshop used by a designer or artist.

“We work with other designers across Houston and collaborate on projects because we are all so busy and are managing different workloads,” explains Allison. “To have a place where others can come and create and work with one another and not be in a competitive environment was my goal.”

Atelier Haus is more than an interior design firm. They work on renovations, whole home renovations, and new builds from start to finish. Architecture, art, and fashion have been a big influence for Allison along the way. Her design studio is full of colorful bolts of fabric and pieces that will inspire clients to be bold.

Allison explains how she and her team at Atelier Haus watch the trends, and if products are not moving, they move in new products with updated colors or textures on par with trends for what clients are seeking. Atelier Haus also has a gift boutique and curates handmade gifts from artisans from all over the world to support other small businesses and entrepreneurs, mostly from the United States, but a few from across the globe. The unique pieces make wonderful gifts year-round and clients become lifelong customers and vice versa.

“I’ve always dreamed of having a design studio of my own,” shares Allison Moore, “We also host and co-host special events.”

Beautiful fabric pillows.
A unique smoked glass light fixture hangs in the studio kitchen.
“To have a place where others can create and work together, not be in a competitive environment was my goal.”

From Galentine’s events, to summer evenings that include: Pinot and Portrait with a friend, and a Christmas in July with the Junior League of the Woodlands, the team at Atelier Haus provides their creative services to the community while networking and sustaining relationships.

They are currently working with National Kitchen and Bath Association and their chair Kay Diamond, to brainstorm how they can open up to area students to gain experience and learn through shadowing in the industry. Allison recalls how difficult it was for her 20 years ago to get into the industry. “The more knowledge we can pass onto the younger generation, and people who love design, the better,” says Allison.

Atelier Haus is very client-driven, be it designing and decorating new builds to renovating and designing for those clients with family heirlooms and their wants and needs. Traditional clients might be looking to design their forever home, or those clients aging in place, and Allison and her team have a plethora of ideas and a variety of options for the long-term inspiration.  The time spent with clients is all consuming once the design process starts, through the project finish until the homes are completed, and even after.

fall fun PARTY PLANNING

BACK TO SCHOOL MEETS FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS WITH PARTY PLANNING BY MEGHAN WARREN EVENTS

ARTICLE BY MEGHAN WARREN

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

We were lucky enough to get Meghan Warren, party planner extraordinaire, to get us excited about fall. Meghan is an expert in customized party planning and design, specializing in children’s parties and special events.

As we transition from summer to fall, the unofficial day for most families is back to school. We threw this BACK TO SCHOOL BASH to celebrate the year to come. This was an amazing way for the kids to reach out to new friends in class and introduce them to others.

We added many nostalgic details that we all remember from our own school days starting with the brown bag lunch! Guests were able to stuff their personalized bags with their favorite lunch items!

Let me point out a few other fun details we added to the party!  Each place setting included a personalized No. 2 pencil, mini cake in a jar and favor bag. For the favor bag, we drew horizontal and vertical lines to resemble wide ruled paper, added a “great job” sticker and an A+. We filled the bag with pencil topper erasers for class. This party will always be a fun memory as they use the personalized pencil and erasers at school.

Friday Night Lights in the Fall is a great time to get your family excited to support their local football teams. Whether you are a college or NFL fan, these football tables are a great way to involve the kids while you are cheering on your favorite team. You can take it one step further and add your team’s colors, logos and mascots.  A fun way to keep the kids involved are Game Day Bingo Cards. It’s a great way to teach them about the sport - they will not want to take their eyes off the game knowing there is a prize at stake! Meghanwarrenevents.com

Fashion Brings FUN into Fundraising

Theme styled parties for a cause come to life

On the Boardwalk nautical themed decor.

Some say, “Forget big hotel ballrooms. If you are chairing a major fundraiser in The Woodlands, book yourself a golf course.” The "Into the Woods" Vampire Ball will benefit the Rotary Club of the Woodlands Foundation from a magical setting on the Palmer Course at Woodlands Country Club.

“We’re super excited to raise money and awareness,” says Patti Rivela, co-chair of the Into the Woods Vampire Ball. “People love this year’s Vampire theme."

Who originated the theme, which includes sponsor levels like Phantom of the Woods.  “I’m a big Anne Rice fan,” says Rivela. Her co-chair Evan Berlin, who serves as board chair of Mosaics and Program Chair with Rotary came up with the concept playing off the Halloween theme. “In the past we’ve made ghosts and spiderwebs as the decor, this year we created an actual theme. As a vampire ball, individuals can come as a vampire of any era

Into the Woods Gala

from Egyptian to modern, or any Halloween costume or even as a human in elegant attire.”

What’s the biggest challenge?  “I find that we must constantly energize and bring new "life blood", staying up with newcomers,” says Rivela. “We must constantly refill the funnel.  That’s true for any size organization.”

While it’s hard to argue with the majesty of the tall pines and serene greens, some events mandate the amenities of an inside locale, such as The Walk. “Since 2012, Interfaith of The Woodlands has been using fashion as a vehicle to share our mission of serving and fundraising for our very worthy community programs and services,” says Missy Herndon, President & CEO, Interfaith of The Woodlands. “Our New York style Runway Fashion Show events have featured designs from Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Tootsies and Alice+Olivia. The Walk, an event created by the Interfaith team and event committee, working with Houston fashion show producer Lenny Matuszewski Jr. in partnership with Saks Fifth Avenue, has continued this tradition, presenting an evening event showcasing the latest trends in contemporary and formal attire as a way to bring people together to support Interfaith’s ongoing efforts to meet community needs for families and seniors.”

Matuszewski produces events and shows for over 40 plus charities and philanthropies annually. “Each of them has a specific mission statement yet they use the fashion show as the entertainment vehicle which raises those very important dollars for a very worthy cause, just like Missy stated,” he says.  "Over the years the retailers have changed some, but the “heart” of the show remains the same: fashion with a purpose."

“We anticipate attendees will make a signature mark with their own style and creativity. There is certainly a great canvas for everyone to show their own unique personalities!”
— Mitzi Pearson.

Fundraisers find that donors enjoy more style, and fashionable fun. “The idea of incorporating themes to move away from the black-tie format and create an experiential event was introduced in 2022,” notes Callie Thompson, Development Director for the Montgomery County Food Bank. “This approach has not only increased attendance but also enhanced the overall gala experience for our supporters. Attendees are encouraged to dress on theme or cocktail attire.”

The 2025 Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope Gala will take place in February of 2025, marking the Food Bank’s 40th anniversary of service to the community. “The gala has evolved from a traditional blacktie/formal event to an exciting, themed experience,” says Thompson. “This change allows attendees to

Great fashion at Into the Woods gala

engage more creatively with the event and look forward to unique, memorable experiences each year. Themes from past galas include "One for the Records" (2022), "One Small Step" (2023), and "On the Boardwalk” (2024).

Last year, The Woodlands Charities expanded to assist nine non-profits, including Rotary as one of largest beneficiaries, taking it to a new level that will also benefit a special project for YES to YOUTH.  Now the Rotary Club of the Woodlands, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary, has taken the event under its purview. This event replaces the annual Crawfish and Cornhole event, which Rotary After Hours hosted for many years.

“Montgomery County continues to have a wide variety of events – plenty of Clay Shoots, Cornhole tournaments, and Golf Tournaments to support their cause,” says Ann Wolford, President of The Wolford Group.  “I believe what you are seeing with the increase in galas is newer organizations in the community starting to have them as fundraisers (in addition to those who are already holding galas).

2023 Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope space themed gala titled One Small Step encouraging the community to unite together.

For YES to YOUTH, we have three signature events each year - Galentine's Luncheon, Gala and The Maggert Golf Tournament,” says Wolford.  “Each event has its own unique experience and theme and audience.”

Rotary has long been an important player on the fundraising scene.  “Our community is getting more creative, for example, with the Yes to Youth Pop Art Gala,” explains Rivela. “We are stewards of all our Rotary funding and we have so much in kind donated. Many of our décor items. Ann Ecklebright of Sprouts Floral Design is lending us key treasures and advising us on how to do amazing things for less.  We’re “all hands-on deck” because we have no staff and no development director. It’s a labor of love.”

“The role that fashion plays is an important playful one,” says Rivela.  “So much of life is so serious as are our many of the causes for which we raise money.  Some of our Woodlands rotary focuses are. helping families with cancer, helping people needing blood donations, helping seniors, helping our Yes to Youth shelter kids, and the severity of their lives just to name a few.  Life is always so serious.  Spirited events like this offer joyous opportunity making a difference in a playful fun way which is good for the soul and just darn fun!”

“The role that fashion plays is an important playful one.”

New Lifestyle Denim!

Your Four Seasons Wardrobe

For Fall 2024, Tommy Bahama will debut Indigo Palms, a new lifestyle denim collection for men and women. Inspired by the year-round wearability of denim, Indigo Palms features sun-washed indigo, expertly crafted fits and thoughtful details in everyday denim and denim-related sportswear designed to seamlessly merchandise with other pieces throughout the entire Tommy Bahama brand.

“Our goal with Indigo Palms is to help make Tommy Bahama your four-season go-to destination for head-to-toe dressing. We’ve designed Indigo Palms to incorporate some of our most popular products and fabrics, featuring greater softness and stretch,” explained Bradley O’Brien, EVP of Product Design and Development for Tommy Bahama. “We want Indigo Palms to both stand on its own and be easily outfitted with the broader Tommy Bahama collection.”

Indigo Palms offers the ultimate in comfort and style derived from soft and stretchable fabrics, clean design and the fine details that Tommy Bahama customers

have come to love. Taking cues from heritage denim, Indigo Palms adds innovative new washes, perfected fits, sundrenched pigments and garment dyed fabrics. Rich textural sweaters and luxurious suede jackets round out the assortment. Fashion also meets responsibility in its sustainable approach, from eco-friendly washes to recycled cotton and polyester fabrics. Lived in and well loved, Indigo Palms is destined to become a go-to favorite.

The men’s collection features the updated modern straight leg Indigo Palms Jean, the relaxed fit Island Drifter Jean, and the classic Sea Coast Corduroy 5-Pocket jean. Updated fits and enhanced-stretch waistbands work together to ensure the ultimate in comfort and mobility, whether for casual business settings or nighttime and weekend socializing.

In women’s, building on the popularity of Tommy Bahama’s skinny and boyfriend jeans, Indigo Palms elevates denim with outstanding fits and on-trend silhouettes in washes from white to natural and black.
