A FRESH START AWAITS
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2026 Celebrate the start of a brand-new
year filled with endless possibilities!
LIFESTYLE LETTER
Letter from the Editor As we finish one year, we step boldly into the next knowing that each decision we make helps craft the story of 2026. And just like the anticipation you might feel— for all those book lovers out there—when you can’t quite go to bed until you discover what happens next—will Robinson Crusoe finally get off the island? Will Mrs. Bennet ever cease to be ridiculous, and spare her eligible daughters embarrassment at the next ball?—we at The Woodlands City Lifestyle are anticipating whatever the new year may hold, excited to share it with you. Though the number itself may not gleam with the same style as its predecessor, 2026 is still this century’s version of the roaring 20s. With that in mind, why not be bold and try something new this year? To give us all something to consider, I researched what New Year’s resolutions looked like a century ago. With the United States still in the Prohibition Era, it’s no surprise that 20th-century resolution-makers were focused on practicing self control, cultivating virtue, repaying debt, and caring for their health. But my favorite find was a column in the January 15, 1926 edition of the San Pedro News Pilot reporting that: “Miss Irene Hesenius, Winthrop, Mass., is keeping her New Year’s resolution, to swim in the open every day this winter.” Hesenius is pictured in her ‘20s swimming costume “with the ax she uses to break the ice.” While Woodlands residents may not be able to take a cue from Irene Hesenius—no icy waters here—her lively goal is a reminder that resolutions are what we make of them. By now, you’ve likely considered your New Year’s resolutions, or you might after reading this: our premier edition of 2026, the Health & Wellness issue. And you would be right to. We’ve sought to cover everything from financial fitness to cooking classes, local wellness staycations and fitness studios, a travel feature of Seoul, South Korea, and more. May the following pages bring you fresh inspiration and encouragement for all that lies ahead.

CHEERS TO 20 YEARS INSIDE TWO DECADES OF LEADERSHIP AT THE WOODLANDS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
ARTICLE BY DAWN ALLEN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Ambler connecting with students at TWCA.
22
EDU CAT ION COR N E R | ED U CAT ION
Few leaders begin their journey staring at a million-dollar deficit. But that’s exactly where Julie Ambler found herself in 2006, when she stepped in as interim head of The Woodlands Christian Academy. Asked to keep the school afloat for just six to nine months, she would go on to lead it for two decades—and transform it in every way. “I came in with a background in investment banking,” Ambler recalls. “The goal was to fix the finances and keep the school running.” Determined to keep the doors open, Ambler and the board gathered in prayer.
“We literally got on our faces in the library and said, ‘Lord, if You want us to close, we’ll close. But if You want this school to survive, You’ll have to lead it.’” That night, they placed The Woodlands Christian Academy back into the care of its rightful head: Jesus Christ.
BUILDING ON A FIRM FOUNDATION
From that moment, Ambler relied on both her faith and financial acumen to rebuild the school, focusing not just on stability but on cultivating a place where students and staff could thrive. The school ended that year in the black and has remained there ever since. When TWCA launched a capital campaign in 2007 for a high school facility, Ambler insisted on staying debt-free. “We built what we could with what we had—and paid for it in cash.” Today, TWCA remains debt-free, with more than $40 million in new facilities—all accomplished through faith and good stewardship.
RAISING THE BAR
One of Ambler’s first initiatives was to revisit the school’s mission and align every program with its purpose: to build warriors for Christ: spiritually, intellectually, creatively, physically, and socially. “God gave us minds to use for His glory,” she says. “There’s no reason our students can’t have the best education and a deeply rooted Christian worldview.” With enrollment near 900 students, TWCA’s graduates attend the nation’s top universities and military academies, equipped with confidence, compassion, and conviction.
A SPIRIT OF CARE
Wellbeing is woven throughout campus life, from classroom environment to extracurriculars, and is reflected in TWCA’s counseling program, where licensed counselors teach lessons on kindness, support teachers and parents, and help students navigate the pressures of a digital world. A spirit of care extends to faculty, too. Before each school year, teachers walk the campus in prayer, lifting up every student and staff member by name. Monthly worship gatherings and weekly prayer circles deepen their sense of unity and purpose.
A LASTING FAITH LEGACY
Looking back, Ambler laughs at the irony of her title as “interim head of school.” “They were looking for the real head of school,” she says with a smile. “I guess they found her—maintaining at 20 years!” “I always tell people, our students are polite, kind, and grounded because they’ve grown up in a culture centered on Christ,” Ambler says. “Parents tell us their children are transformed here. And when those graduates go off to college and the first thing they do is find a church—that’s when I know we’ve done our job.”
Sharing a fun moment with students and staff.
Ambler shares a story with eager learners.

From Wealth to Wellness Strategies for True Financial Fitness in 2026
As 2026 arrives, “financial fitness” has become less about market predictions and more about disciplined structure, adaptability, and long-term clarity. To explore what true financial agility looks like for the year ahead, The Woodlands City Lifestyle spoke with a veteran advisor with more than 25 years’ experience guiding executives, families, retirees, and business owners through shifting economic landscapes. With credentials spanning retirement planning, estate strategy, and long-term care, the insights of this seasoned expert reveal a simple truth: in 2026, the strongest households won’t just be financially secure; they’ll be financially fit.
intentional cash-flow design. High-income households often assume liquidity takes care of itself, but in practice, unmanaged spending, irregular distributions, and unexamined recurring obligations quietly erode optionality. In 2026, true financial fitness begins with a structured cashflow framework—one that aligns lifestyle, taxes, and long-term ambitions.
TWCL: You bring more than two and a half decades of experience in wealth management. When you consider “financial fitness” for 2026, what foundational discipline do individuals tend to overlook—despite having the means?
Security is no longer the benchmark; adaptability is. For clients entering or already in retirement, 2026 calls for a dynamic withdrawal strategy, stress-testing income streams against several market environments and ensuring discretionary spending can expand or contract without compromising essentials. My guidance is simple: build flexibility into every assumption—taxes, longevity, and
Even among individuals with significant means, the most overlooked discipline is

TWCL: With your credentials in retirement planning, estate planning and long-term care (CRPC®, CLTC®, CMFA® among them), how should someone approaching or in retirement recalibrate in 2026 to remain financially agile—rather than simply financially secure?
“Active management begins with knowing exactly where you stand.”
care needs included. The retirees who thrive are the ones who maintain strategic slack in their plan.
TWCL: For households with complex portfolios, what three metrics or “health indicators” do you monitor to assess their financial fitness—beyond simple returns on investments? For complex portfolios, I monitor: 1. Tax efficiency of investment activity: capital-gain realization patterns, loss-harvesting discipline, and qualified versus non-qualified income. 2. Liquidity architecture: how quickly funds can be accessed without disrupting long-term strategy. 3. Concentration risk: not only in asset classes but across sectors, correlated strategies, and even geography. These reveal more about a portfolio’s resilience than performance alone.
TWCL: Estate planning and legacy governance are clearly part of your focus. How does “financial fitness” connect to preserving heritage for future generations in 2026—and what common mistake do you see in legacy planning? Financial fitness is the discipline that ensures a legacy doesn’t merely transfer—it endures. When families maintain strong liquidity, tax-aware investing, and updated estate structures, they pass on clarity instead of complexity. The most common mistake I see in 2026 planning is assuming documents written years ago still reflect current family dynamics, tax law, or asset levels. Legacy planning must be living work, not a one-time project.
TWCL: In a world where high-net-worth individuals often have access to bespoke investment opportunities, how do you counsel clients to balance the allure of alternative investments with the principle of durability and discipline in their core wealth strategy? Alternative investments can be powerful, but they must complement—not replace—the core plan. My advice in 2026 is to treat alternatives as a satellite allocation that enhances return potential while the core portfolio remains allocated to durable, transparent, and liquid strategies. The allure of exclusivity should never overshadow the need for simplicity and reliability at the foundation.
TWCL: You emphasize personalized advice and digital tools. In your view, what role should technology play in a client’s financial fitness regimen in 2026—and how does it support (or perhaps undermine) long-term focus? Digital tools should enhance awareness, not create reactionary behavior. In 2026, technology is most valuable when it helps clients track spending, model scenarios, and visualize progress toward goals. Where it undermines fitness is in promoting day-today performance watching. Used properly, technology supports long-term discipline while enabling us to make more informed adjustments during our ongoing reviews.
TWCL: When you speak of being “prepared for the expected and unexpected,” what three things would you suggest households do in Q1 to transition from being passive wealth holders to active, financially fit stewards of their capital? To shift from passive wealth holders to active stewards: 1. Conduct a full net-worth diagnostic—assets, liabilities, liquidity, and tax posture. 2. Revisit goals with time-bound clarity, adjusting for life changes, family needs, and evolving ambitions. 3. Update risk frameworks, including insurance, estate documents, and investment allocations. Active management begins with knowing exactly where you stand.
TWCL: Lastly, from your vantage point in The Woodlands and the wider State of Texas, what unique regional or Texas-centric considerations should affluent residents keep in mind when planning their 2026 financial fitness strategy (tax, real estate, business climate, philanthropy, etc.)? Texans enjoy advantages. No state income tax, a thriving business ecosystem, and strong real estate markets—but these come with nuances. Property taxes remain an important planning factor, as do liquidity considerations in energy-exposed portfolios. Philanthropy continues to be a powerful strategy in Texas, not just for community impact but for tax efficiency. With the state’s continued population growth, real estate and business valuations should be reviewed regularly to ensure they reflect true market conditions.

Warm, buttery chocolate croissants in the morning are my favorite, and the croissant-making class was an unforgettable experience. The art of making traditional sweet and savory croissants was well taught and achievable for patrons. We prepared a laminated dough, perfected our rolling, shaping, and proofing skills, generously buttered each pastry layer, and added in shavings of dark chocolate before popping them in the oven. I never felt so accomplished and would not have attempted the feat on my own. Plus, I had croissants for dinner and dessert all week. Better than Europe At the Market Street location, floor lead Rhonda Nance shared that the pasta-making classes are wildly popular. She explained that one client came back with high praises from Italy, boasting that Sur La Table’s hands-on experience from start to finish was more wellrounded than that presented in the country known for pasta.
Feeling accomplished making the savory croissants.
“I like that our chefs use food that a consumer would buy for their home versus high-end things you’d never buy or items that are hard to source,” says Nance. “I love that sometimes the chefs will alter recipes slightly if they have extra ingredients, like bacon grease, to incorporate or enhance the recipes; it gives people ideas to get creative.” The Chefs at Sur La Table are dynamic, funny, and, more importantly, they are formally trained at culinary schools with extensive experience. The chefs get rave reviews from clientele for how helpful and informative the classes are, and it brings them back to try their hand at other cuisines. Cooking does not have to be intimidating, and the experts at Sur La Table make it an enjoyable, teachable experience where nothing has to be perfect—well, except maybe when measuring baking ingredients. Even Sur La Table’s own floor lead took a Julia Child-themed class and purchased the cookbook from the store–and learned so much more than she had imagined. Nance shared that her next kitchen endeavor is learning how to master the soufflé. Flavorful Fun Many younger clients and teens enjoy the kids’ themed workshops, expressing an interest in becoming a chef once they’ve appreciated an interactive class. Sur La Table’s chefs incorporate food with fun, which encourages youth to keep pursuing the love of cooking—along with trying new foods. Whatever course you select, it is guaranteed to be an informational, enjoyable epicurean experience, for the seasoned home chef and kitchen-shy alike. Bon appétit!
Voila! Look at those buttery, flaky layers.

Your Staycation: Curated THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL HOUSTON INVITES A WEEKEND OF INTENTIONAL EASE ARTICLE BY TRAVIS HAGER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

LOCA LLY SOU R CE D | L I F E + CU LT U RE
For many in The Woodlands, wellness has become less about a single treatment and more about a rhythm of simple, thoughtful moments. A long exhale. A meal that feels light yet memorable. A quiet night of real rest. When that kind of reset calls, Houston may not be the first place that comes to mind. Yet the Four Seasons Hotel Houston has mastered the art of the urban retreat, offering the calm of a resort woven into the energy of downtown. It’s close enough to feel spontaneous, yet polished enough to feel like a true escape. General Manager Tom Segesta describes the hotel’s approach in a way that suits Houston’s most discerning locals. “Wellness means something different to everyone,” he says. “To some, it’s a great massage. To others, it’s a weekend of healthy eating or simply the chance to sleep in and spend the afternoon by the pool. We give our guests options so they can shape the experience that works for them.”
That idea of choice forms the backbone of a stay here. Step inside the lobby and the pace shifts immediately. The hum of downtown fades and the hotel’s softer edges take over, offering the hushed assurance of a place built for renewal. It’s a striking contrast to the setting outside, where the Rockets crowd pours into Toyota Center, and the return of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo pulls in families and friends for a month of celebration. The Four Seasons sits at the center of all of it, yet feels distinctly removed, like a sanctuary carved into the heart of the city. CONTINUED >

"We source from local farms and ranches whenever possible," says General Manager Tom Segesta.
ENTERING WEEKEND MODE
Set on the fourth floor, just beyond the Spa, Nail Bar, and Fitness Center, the pool area feels more like a rooftop garden than a city-framed deck. Chaise lounges stretch into the sun, and the staff brings refreshments throughout the afternoon that add a sense of ease. Many guests arrive here first, letting the shift in setting guide them into “weekend mode” before they’ve even unpacked. A wellness-focused stay can follow many paths. The hotel’s team enjoys tailoring each visit, and Segesta often sees The Woodlands guests embrace a slower schedule.

The fourth-floor pool deck is a welcomed oasis amid the city skycape.
“We love working with Texans who want a curated staycation,” he says. “A morning workout, a light lunch by the pool, an ELEMIS facial, a CBD massage, a mani-pedi at the Nail Bar, and some time in the Topgolf Swing Suites are all great options. Dinner might be sushi and steak at Toro Toro or a salad and lobster tacos at Bayou & Bottle. A zero or low-proof cocktail from Bandista always makes a great nightcap.”
SUBTLE SOPHISTICATION
Part of the hotel’s appeal lies in its ability to deliver indulgence without going overboard. The dining program reflects this balance. Toro Toro’s menu moves easily between bold Latin steakhouse flavors and lighter coastal favorites. Guests can enjoy a ribeye with potatoes and a dulce de leche dessert or choose ceviche, sushi, and salad. Both paths feel thoughtful and well executed. Fitness-minded guests will find solid options as well. Saturday morning yoga offers a gentle start before a walk or jog around nearby Discovery Green. The Spa’s newer CBD treatments support recovery and relaxation. The Lavender Dreams Soothing Body Scrub helps reset the body at the end of a long day. These small rituals create a weekend that feels refreshing, not rigid. Part of the hotel’s charm comes from the way it blends luxury with authenticity. Segesta notes that local sourcing plays a quiet but central role. “Our guests expect responsible practices across their stay,” he says. “We source from local farms and ranches whenever possible and use local brands and designers throughout the hotel.”
A CUSTOM ITINERARY
That sense of place is one reason many of The Woodlands residents choose Houston over a farther resort. Access is easy. Arrival requires no long drive, no airport, no complicated handoffs. Guests check in and ease into the experience in minutes. The hotel’s location makes last-minute plans for a performance at Jones Hall, a night with the Rockets, or a museum exhibition at the MFAH feel effortless. The concierge team handles reservations, transport, and curated itineraries. “We love arranging touches that make a stay more memorable,” he says. “A private perfume showcase at Le Salon Krigler, a wine pairing or bourbon flight at dinner, a golf pro at the Topgolf Swing Suites, or even a bespoke Mahjong lesson with martinis. If a guest can dream it, we can probably make it happen.” This blend of thoughtfulness, access to culture and sports, and restorative calm positions the Four Seasons Houston as an ideal weekend getaway for families, couples, and solo travelers. It’s close enough to feel easy, polished enough to feel special, and flexible enough to adapt to whatever wellness means in the moment. In a city that thrives on momentum, the hotel has carved out a space that encourages guests to slow down without stepping away from what makes Houston vibrant. A Rockets game on Friday night, a quiet breakfast in bed on Saturday morning, a concert at the Symphony, a nap by the pool, dinner at Toro Toro all fit into the same stay. That mix is the hotel’s signature: a wellness retreat framed by the best of the city. CONTINUED >

A LOCAL’S GUIDE TO A WELLNESS WEEKEND AT
Four Seasons Hotel Houston
For readers in The Woodlands, the ideal staycation at Four Seasons Hotel Houston begins before you even reach the lobby. The short drive downtown creates a welcome shift in pace, giving you enough distance from routine without turning the weekend into a production. Once you arrive, the goal is simple: settle in, slow down, and let the city’s rhythm fade. Start on the fourth-floor pool deck. It’s the hotel’s most surprising space, a relaxed oasis framed by palms and warm light. Order a light lunch, stretch out on a lounger, and let the afternoon drift. Many guests end up lingering here longer than planned, which is part of its charm. When it’s time to move, the Spa makes for an easy transition. A massage or the Lavender Dreams Scrub sets the tone for the evening, and the Nail Bar offers a clean, polished respite before dinner. Toro Toro is the house favorite for its mix of bold dishes and lighter options, while Bayou & Bottle gives guests a more casual setting with salads, seafood, and a solid zero-proof cocktail lineup. If you’re in the mood for something beyond the hotel, the city’s best diversions sit just outside the door. Catch the Houston Symphony, a Rockets game, or plan your stay around the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for a weekend with its own sense of celebration. Return to your room for a quiet nightcap from Bandista, then sleep in. Breakfast in bed is more than a comfort here, it’s part of the ritual. When you finally head back to The Woodlands, the reset stays with you. It’s the kind of weekend that feels restorative without trying too hard.
Four Seasons Houston can tailor your weekend stay to your definition of relaxation.

ARTICLE BY CAROL MOWDY BOND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MCMLS-KEVIN BRADY LIBRARY
More Than Just Stacks The New Kevin Brady Library and Community Center Stamps Community Engagement into a Redefined Library Space When its doors swung open in September 2025, the Kevin Brady Library and Community Center began a new chapter. And it wasn't just of the literary type. Architectural and construction teams redesigned a previously-used-as-a-grocerystore space into a modern venue replete with community spaces and freshly arranged book shelves for the public to explore. Part of the Montgomery County Memorial Library System, the location— named for former U.S. representative Kevin Brady—replaces the South Regional Library on Lake Robbins Drive. Construction began on the new library during summer 2024 with the goal of establishing a new community anchor to support the present and empower the future.
NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S LIBRARY
As with any library, there are books, and lots of them. They are part of well-defined spaces for children, teens, and adults, plus innovative reading nooks and built-in study pods. And there’s even a large, dedicated area that gives teens their own library space, and eight study rooms and two conference rooms. Plus, a future play area is planned for the Children’s Department with educational

and age-appropriate toys, as well as more technology (including gaming equipment for teens) in the Young Adult area. “The Kevin Brady Library provides various services and programs for all ages to choose from and enjoy,” MCMLS Executive Library Director Dr. Janna Hoglund said. “The library represents our commitment to lifelong learning and connection. It is a space where everyone can explore, discover, and grow together.”
A FLAGSHIP FOR NOW AND THE FUTURE
In fact, this 48,000-square-foot flagship comes with its own community center, making it a destination that includes just about everything the area could imagine. The location embraces wide-open spaces that welcome community engagement, plus plenty of amenities that are ready for the public, and others in the works: the library area is developing a professional podcast studio with audiovisual production capabilities. And a specialized space with various advanced equipment will include 3D modular printers, a 3D scanner, VR equipment and more.
DID SOMEONE SAY BALLROOM?

for weddings, banquets, and large events. In addition, guests will enjoy the state-of-the-art, theater-style-tiered classroom that seats 98—ample space for lectures, training, and educational purposes. On top of it all, there are boardrooms, event rooms and meeting rooms. Plus, there’s space for a Friends Bookshop operated by The South Montgomery County Friends of the Library for children’s, young adult, and adult selections shopping.
Popular classes continue, ranging from Senior Game Days, to Baby & Me Storytime, and everything in between, including daily community activities and summer reading programs. Some might say there’s no better time to get a library card. The Kevin Brady Library is located in the Grogan’s Mill Village Center at 2250 Buckthorne Place. JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Time for Some Seoul Searching
REINVIGORATE YOUR TRAVEL LIFE BY EXPLORING SOUTH KOREA’S VIBRANT CAPITAL CITY ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAURA L. GREEN

I NSP IR E D BY | TRAVEL
If the usual bucket list travel destinations seem uninspiring, Seoul provides a refreshing reset. At once ancient and hyper-modern, it’s a place for restoring body and mind.
WHERE TO START
This city of roughly 9.6 million people can seem overwhelming. Get to know its roots with a visit to Gyeongbokgung Palace, the first royal palace of the Joseon dynasty, originally built in 1395. The expansive grounds include the National Palace Museum and the National Folk Museum. Visitors dressed in traditional hanbok attire, available for rent from nearby shops, receive free admission. Or purchase the Discover Seoul Pass to gain access to this and other sights citywide.
DESTRESS WITH A SPA DAY
Seoul’s beauty and wellness culture attracts spa travelers from around the world. Myeong-dong and Gangnam are home to many of the most popular clinics, offering multi-step facials, scalp therapies, injectables and other services. After your session, maintain the glow by shopping at K-beauty icons, including Olive Young, Laneige, and Innisfree.
SAVOR THE FOOD SCENE
From push carts to Michelin-recognized bistros, get to know the city through its cuisine. A night market food tour (bookable through Viator or Klook) is the perfect primer. At Gwangjang Market, sample kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), tteok-bokki (spicy, CONTINUED >

cylindrical rice cakes), and yukhoe (marinated raw beef). Pair these with a traditional rice wine or with soju, Korea’s signature spirit. Devote a full day to your tastebuds by heading to Ikseon-dong Hanok Street in Jongno District. Snag a pair of freshly baked, buttery loaves from Jayeondo Salt Bread, then walk around the corner to Seoul Café for a caffeinated beverage. Spend the morning exploring alleys lined with shops in traditional hanok houses. Some of the best Japanese food outside of Japan is found in Korea, so for lunch, search out Hoho Sikdang, a Japanese comfort food spot known for salmon sashimi, steam baskets filled with beef and vegetables, and omurice, a silky omelet wrapped around fried rice. Cap the day with a classic Korean barbecue dinner at one of the many outdoor grilling tables clustered near Jongno-3 subway station. Experiencing one of the city’s acclaimed fine-dining restaurants such as Mingles, Jungsik, Born and Bred, and A Flower Blossom on the Rice is a worthy splurge requiring reservations weeks—sometimes months—in advance through the CatchTable app.
TEA AND COFFEE CULTURE
You’ll often find a pitcher of barley tea (boricha) on the table in place of water at traditional restaurants. Attend a Korean tea ceremony at a traditional tea house and taste the delicate oolong and green teas blended with fruits, flowers and leaves. Or enjoy a pot at a modern tea cafe like Osulloc or Delphic, where throngs of Korean young people enjoy fine teas and the minimalistic vibe. Coffee culture has exploded here in recent years, with multiple cafes on every street in popular areas. Extravagant dalgona (whipped) coffee and lattes topped with donuts (or even corn!) share the menu with traditional matcha and espresso drinks. (Note: Coffee here is considered an afternoon and evening ritual, so for an early morning java, confirm café hours in advance.)
RETAIL THERAPY
From mega-malls to galleries and street markets, Seoul is a shopping mecca. Korean ceramics, fabric art, and hangi (traditional paper) make distinctive souvenirs. Phone bling and K-pop merchandise crowd the shelves in stalls and shops throughout Myeong-dong and other shopping areas. Attached to the Fairmont Hotel, the sleek Hyundai Seoul in Yeouido-dong houses floor after floor of designer brands. Spend a day at Lotte World Tower & Mall, a mammoth complex featuring eight floors of shopping, along with a hotel, restaurants, a movie theater, a concert hall, and an aquarium.
FURTHER AFIELD
A side trip via high-speed rail to the city of Gyeong-ju will take you into the heart of the Silla Kingdom which unified the three ancient kingdoms of the Korean peninsula. Take in the serene temples, ancient burial mounds, Buddhist statuary and other archaeological wonders before returning to Seoul.

End with a tour of Seoul by night: The I Love Seoul Tour whisks you to Gangnam’s Banpo Bridge Fountains, a multi-colored extravaganza over the Han River, followed by a hike along the Namsan section of the city wall for views of N Seoul Tower and the twinkling skyline of this unique and welcoming city.

The New Frontier of Health U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
54
S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.
3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive selfcriticism to continuously raise the standard of care.” To hear the extended conversation with Dr. Kyle Gillett, scan the QR code for an exclusive podcast episode.
