LIFESTYLE LETTER
Ever heard the idiom “taking the long view”?
Definitionally, it’s straightforward. According to Merriam-Webster, it means “to think about the things that might happen in the future rather than only about the things that are happening now.” We do this all the time in various areas of our lives.
We invest our money for a future return. We dedicate our time to promising relationships. We pencil in the month’s events in anticipation of happy times.

But in that definition, I find the adverb “only” important. It signifies that taking the long view doesn’t mean we ruminate on the future to the exclusion of the present, but rather, we live each day with a forward-looking perspective. Said more simply, we enjoy today while also contemplating—and preparing for—what can be known of tomorrow. Some dear friends of mine do this all the time; firmly rooted in the present, they live, as they would say, “in light of eternity.”
Taking the long view, by all accounts, is to live on purpose. What better thought to guide the upcoming pages of the edition you hold in your hands: our annual Investment Issue.
Rather than focusing solely on financial investment, we strove to showcase all the ways we can invest our lives here in The Woodlands. Although we, of course, include two finance-related features—top tax tips from Better Bookkeepers Inc., and a spotlight on a financial literacy and career readiness course for the students in your life.
In the following pages, we’ve curated several ideas for how to live on purpose— whether by serving the community à la Rotary, making the most of family time, or taking a cue from Tim Tebow, who is redefining the meaning of “MVP.”
As you read the pages ahead, we hope you will be encouraged to live each day in view of tomorrow. After all, spring has arrived—the season of new beginnings.
Until next month,

Welcoming New Patients.

There is a sense of poetry to the scent of real leather when you open the door to a finely appointed vehicle. It evokes not only refinement, but permanence. You don't simply sit on leather; you settle into it. It absorbs the years, the journeys, the lives lived along winding roads and polished boulevards. And yet, as the modern world rushes toward synthetic everything—leatherette, vegan leather—the question arises, “Is real leather still worth choosing?”
BY TRAVIS HAGER
The answer, as you may suspect, is yes. Not out of sentimentality, but out of truth. A truth grounded in environmental stewardship, craftsmanship, and the elegant honesty of natural materials.

Leather, at its core, is a byproduct of something deeply interwoven with human history: animal husbandry. For millennia, it has offered durability, comfort, and luxury across cultures—from Roman legionnaires’ saddles to the gentleman’s Chesterfield. And while its rivals in synthetic forms attempt to mimic its softness or durability, none have succeeded in replicating its essence.
Contrary to popular marketing claims, real leather—particularly as it is used in the automotive world—is not an environmental villain. In fact, when understood fully, it often proves to be the more sustainable choice compared to so-called vegan leathers.
Real leather is a byproduct, not a primary product. The hides used in automotive interiors are sourced from animals already being raised for meat and dairy production. Without a use for those hides, they would end up as landfill waste. According to the Leather and Hide Council of America, 33 million hides are discarded globally each year—a tragic loss of a natural resource that could otherwise serve a purpose for decades.
In contrast, synthetic leathers—whether polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC)—are plastics derived from fossil fuels. Their production emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and they do not biodegrade. What’s more, many of these “vegan” alternatives contain harmful chemical softeners and microplastics that eventually enter the ocean and food chain.

In the realm of luxury automobiles, not all leather is created equal. If you're investing in an interior, it's worth knowing the terms and understanding what you’re sitting on.
1. Full-Grain Leather
This is the highest quality leather, taken from the top layer of the hide. It includes the natural grain, with all the strength, texture, and unique character that comes from the animal’s life. It ages beautifully, developing a rich patina over time.
Brands like Bentley and Rolls-Royce often use full-grain leather, tanned and dyed by artisans in places like Bridge of Weir (Scotland) or Poltrona Frau (Italy). Expect subtle color variation and remarkable softness.
2. Top-Grain Leather
Slightly more processed than full-grain, top-grain leather has the outermost surface sanded down for a more uniform appearance. It’s still luxurious and durable, but lacks the patina potential of full-grain.

Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW often utilize top-grain for balance between aesthetics and durability.
3. Corrected Grain (Embossed Leather)
Here, imperfections are buffed out and a grain is mechanically embossed onto the surface. It’s more affordable, highly uniform, and easier to clean, making it common in more accessible luxury trims like the Infiniti QX60 or Acura MDX.
4. Bonded Leather
This is essentially leather dust bound together with adhesives and polymers—more akin to particle board than oak. It looks like leather from afar, but offers none of the longevity, breathability, or natural feel. Avoid it entirely in any vehicle claiming to be premium.
To truly navigate leather interiors like a seasoned connoisseur, it’s worth decoding some of the terms automakers use:
• Semi-Aniline Leather: Lightly pigmented and dyed, retaining much of the hide’s natural softness while offering some protection. Common in high-end trims.
• Nappa Leather: Marketing term often used for soft, chrometanned, full-grain or top-grain leather. Not all Nappa is created equal—some is divine, some is merely rebranded corrected grain.
• Vegetable-Tanned: Uses organic materials like bark and leaves in the tanning process. Time-intensive, eco-friendly, and aromatic, but less common in cars due to susceptibility to water stains.
• Chrome-Tanned: Uses chromium salts for quick, uniform tanning. More water-resistant, softer, and common in automotive leather.
If you’re shopping for a vehicle and leather matters, don’t just check the spec sheet—check the seat itself.
1. Touch
Genuine leather has depth and variation. It warms to the touch, whereas synthetics remain cool and slightly tacky.
2. Smell
That classic leather scent is unmistakable. Plastics may try to imitate it, but the synthetic aroma gives them away.
3. Grain
Look closely—real leather will often show pores, scars, and wrinkles. Uniformity can be a red flag.
4. Breathability
Leather allows air flow and temperature adaptation. Ever sat on a vinyl seat in August? Case closed.
Luxury automakers take extraordinary measures to ensure the quality of their leather interiors. Rolls-Royce sources hides from 15 to 18 bulls per vehicle, selecting animals raised in colder climates to reduce imperfections from insect bites. Bentley and McLaren likewise favor bull hides for their thickness, durability, and consistency.
MAINTENANCE: STEWARDSHIP OVER TIME
Leather rewards care. It softens, it ages, it develops character. Much like a favorite pair of boots or an heirloom briefcase, leather interiors become more beautiful over time. That’s part of the appeal for those who think generationally.
Where synthetics crack and peel, real leather can be reconditioned and re-dyed. It’s a material that forgives and endures.
THE CASE FOR REAL THINGS IN A
We live in a time increasingly defined by the simulated: LED fireplaces, fake plants, artificial sweeteners, synthetic fabrics. In that context, real leather—ethically tanned and beautifully crafted—is a rebellion of authenticity.
It’s no longer a question of new vs. old. It’s a matter of integrity. Real leather remains the definitive choice.

PREPARING THE TIKTOK GENERATION FOR FINANCIAL AND CAREER SUCCESS
ARTICLE BY DAWN ALLEN
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

At some point, every young person is expected to answer two life-shaping questions: What do you want to do? and Can you afford it? Too often, those questions collide after graduation when student loans, rent payments, and job searches replace textbooks and schedules.
While today’s youth are digitally savvy—sometimes called “the TikTok Generation,” many are entering adulthood without the tools needed to navigate careers and long-term financial stability. This economy demands financial awareness and intentional planning. Teaching financial literacy and career planning—early—is a critical investment in their future.

“I’M EXCITED TO PILOT UTHRIVE ACROSS TWO TEXAS SCHOOL DISTRICTS—AND TO ALREADY SEE ITS TANGIBLE IMPACT!”
Financial literacy extends far beyond basic budgeting. It includes understanding how income, expenses, credit, saving, investing, and risk protection work together over a lifetime. When paired with career readiness, it empowers young people to make informed choices that support both financial security and personal fulfillment.
UTHRIVE ACADEMY: AN INTEGRATED SOLUTION
A comprehensive approach is at the heart of uThrive Academy, a career readiness and financial literacy curriculum designed to prepare youth for real-life decision-making. Rather than treating career planning and money management as separate subjects, uThrive Academy integrates them into a cohesive course. Available to individuals, schools, and organizations, the program meets Texas state curriculum standards while emphasizing real-world application. Its structured, six-module framework guides students step by step—from identifying a career path to protecting the financial future they are working to build.
CAREER PLANNING: CONNECTING PASSION TO PAYCHECKS
The journey begins with helping students align their interests and strengths with viable career paths. Youth explore today’s occupational landscape, learning which industries are growing and what skills employers seek. Just as important, they identify income needs, connecting lifestyle goals with realistic earning potential. This early clarity helps students pursue careers that are both meaningful and sustainable.
CAREER PURSUIT: TURNING PLANS INTO PAYCHECKS
With a direction established, students move into the practical steps of securing employment. They learn how to build a strong resume and cover letter and master the art of job searching in a competitive market. Interview preparation, salary negotiation, and evaluating job offers are paired with professional development skills, teaching students how to communicate effectively, show reliability, and build credibility on the job.

Personal finance is currently a high school graduation requirement in only 29 states, though that number is on the rise. A 2023 survey reflects 4 out of every 5 adults share that they’ve never received an education in personal finance.
We’re seeing the impact of this void as the U.S. hit the highest ever level of credit card debt, with approximately 61% of U.S. adults reporting living paycheck to paycheck as of 2025.
uThrive Academy strives to bridge the gap—because while geometry knowledge may not be put to use in the real world, financial literacy is—for life.
Once income is established, managing it wisely becomes essential. This module introduces financial literacy fundamentals and explores the psychology behind spending decisions. Students tackle major expenses such as housing and vehicle purchases, learn how taxes affect take-home pay, and create realistic budgets they can maintain—helping money become a tool rather than a stressor.
Students are introduced to banking basics, emergency savings, and strategies for future goals. They learn the fundamentals of investing, the financial advantages of home ownership, and why retirement planning should begin earlier than most people expect.
Understanding credit is key to financial independence. This module covers the importance of a strong credit score, how loans work, and responsible credit card use. Students also learn practical strategies for avoiding and eliminating debt, empowering them to borrow with intention rather than impulse.
Financial stability also depends on preparation. Students learn how healthy relationships contribute to long-term security, how to guard against identity theft, why insurance is essential, and the role of estate planning, even early in adulthood. By combining career readiness with personal financial education in one cohesive curriculum, uThrive Academy equips young people to make confident, informed decisions. The result is a generation prepared not only to earn a living, but to manage it wisely, adapt to change, and build a stable, intentional life, one smart choice at a time.

Jess Smith is the founder of the popular food blog InquiringChef.com, which she started in 2010 after moving to Thailand with her husband. She explored Thai cuisine, took cooking classes, and documented her experiences on the blog. Over time, her passion for cooking grew, leading her to focus on quick, easy meals for families. Today, Inquiring Chef receives over 5 million page views annually and supports a small team. She shares new recipes weekly through email, her blog, and social media, helping home cooks simplify mealtime without sacrificing flavor.
Smith is now an author. Her debut cookbook, Start with a Vegetable, published in 2025 reimagines meal planning by putting vegetables at the center of the plate.
“Start with a Vegetable was the result of a natural transition in the way I started thinking about preparing dinner for my family. At the end of a busy day, I often didn't have the energy to think about dinner in parts by preparing a separate protein, vegetable, and starch,” says Smith. “I realized that if I put a vegetable at the center of the dish, the rest was easy to fill in.”
The book features 100 flexible recipes proving vegetables aren’t just a side— they’re key to simple, satisfying meals.
As chief recipe developer for the Cook Smarts meal-planning app, Smith worked closely with families struggling to get dinner on the table. She noticed a common challenge: people wanted to eat more vegetables but didn’t know how to build meals around them.
“As I started planning and testing recipes for the book, I just loved how easy it made dinnertime feel. Are there carrots in the fridge? Here are a bunch of ways to turn them into dinner. Nearly all of the 100 recipes are complete meals and include easy swaps to make them vegetarian. The book is truly flexitarian, with vegetable-forward recipes for all types of eaters.”
Unlike most cookbooks, Start with a Vegetable is organized by ingredient. Each chapter focuses on a different vegetable, offering multiple ways to turn it into a meal.
“The concept is resonating with many readers who tell me they love that the chapters are organized by vegetable, making it easy to use whatever they have on hand.”
Smith went through a rigorous testing process, starting with over 300 ideas before narrowing them down to 100.
“I always have running lists of recipe ideas. I started sorting recipes into categories, making sure there was variety for each vegetable. I wanted different cooking methods and types of dishes, so each chapter might have a soup, a salad, a roasted dish, a stove-top dish, and a sandwich or pasta.”
After perfecting the recipes in her own kitchen, she passed them to a trusted friend, an everyday home cook, to ensure they worked under realworld conditions.
“I want to know how these recipes worked for a home cook who was shopping at regular grocery stores and trying to make dinner for a family on a weeknight. She sends me feedback on any ingredients that are hard to find, anything that is unclear in the recipe, and tracks how long it takes her to make it with real-life interruptions.”
To further refine the book, Smith enlisted 30 volunteer home cooks through Instagram and her email list to test the recipes.
“My goal was to ensure that the recipes in this book are reliable, easy, and adaptable. I wanted this to be a cookbook for real home cooks. I'm so grateful to that team of volunteers for helping to ensure that it is.”

As The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival blooms into production this spring, we decided to sit down with this year’s featured artist, Taman VanScoy. Known for his soft, moody landscapes reminiscent of Van Gogh, VanScoy explains how he developed his creative focus and where his brush might wander next.
Taman, tell me a bit about yourself. Where did your love for art originate?
Being creative and making some form of art has always been a part of my life since I can remember. Growing up in an artistic family—my mother a ballet dancer and my father a photographer—at an early age, I was encouraged to be creative.
“Every new series I make, there is usually one painting that stands out as being the most successful or unique of the group.”

You attended a Waldorf school in childhood— known for holistic, well-rounded teaching methods—and studied art at California State University Long Beach. In what ways has your education influenced your career?
My upbringing in a Waldorf school was essential in my artistic development as a child. When looking back I realize how important it was for a child to be given the opportunity to explore creatively without the fear of failure. Once in college, my focus narrowed to painting, and I realized that was my calling.
How would you describe your style, and what—or who—has inspired you most?
My current style would be best described as a type of contemporary impressionism highlighted by controlled yet expressive brush strokes. The dream-like feel of my
work is somewhat inspired by the tonalist painters. Gerhard Richter and Vincent Van Gogh are two of my well known favorite artists. I love Gerhard Richter’s piece “Betty” in particular—it evokes this mysterious, dreamlike feel through its realism.
What drew you to landscapes, and what keeps you engaged in that genre?
I’ve always been amazed how being in nature can affect one’s emotions—from the quiet, almost eerie calm of those few minutes after dusk to the energy felt from a thunderstorm. Painting landscapes is a natural fit for me to explore human emotion.
Is there a specific piece from your portfolio that remains significant to you? Every new series I make, there is usually one painting that stands out as being the
most successful or unique of the group. One of my latest pieces entitled “Spring Reflections” is a good example of my latest techniques—loose yet deliberate brush strokes using paint to highlight the negative space, which in turn accentuates the foreground—coming together in a beautiful way. It’s a special piece that I am honored to have auctioned off at The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival 2026.
If you were to take a break from painting to explore another medium, what would you choose and why?
Printmaking has always been fascinating to me. From monoprints—a versatile, painterly printmaking technique that produces a unique, one-of-a-kind image— to mezzotints—an intaglio printmaking technique invented in 1642—the transfer

“Once you get the ball rolling, things start to take shape and that’s when the fun begins.”
process creates interesting textures I would enjoy exploring.
Surveying your career, what is the greatest challenge you’ve faced? What would you consider the greatest triumph?
Preparing for festivals can be very challenging. The deadline to complete artwork can be stressful, but I’ve found some of my best work comes from firm deadlines. You become hyper-focused and paint without second-guessing your decisions. My greatest triumph would be simply having a professional art career for 25 years. Growing up, that seemed impossible, but I have had success beyond my wildest dreams and feel very honored.
Can you describe what a typical studio day looks like for you?
My day usually begins late morning, assessing and contemplating the previous day's work. Usually I take an hour or so looking at what has changed in the painting and what direction it needs to go. Once painting, the brushstrokes tend to be cautious at first and become more confident as the day progresses. I’ve been a professional
artist for 25 years and I still find each day to be a new adventure. Sometimes daunting, sometimes exhilarating, but always gratifying in the end.
You are The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival's 2026 Featured Artist. What does that recognition mean to you? It is an amazing honor to be recognized, and I am beyond excited. To be selected out of a few hundred extremely talented artists is truly overwhelming. I have tried my best to use this selection as motivation to challenge myself artistically and channel that positive energy into my current series. So very thrilled to be a part of this wonderful event.
What piece of advice would you give to someone who would like to try their hand at painting for the first time but is hesitant?
No matter how long you have been creating art, there will always be some form of doubt and uncertainty as the ideas form, but the only way to push past that hesitation is simply to start. Once you get the ball rolling, things start to take shape, and that's when the fun begins.

5 WAYS TO CREATE ENDURING MEMORIES WITH LOVED ONES

Of all the things most precious to us, family is often the first that comes to mind. And yet, for how dearly we hold them, they so often receive our leftovers—the leftover energy at the end of a long day, leftover minutes squeezed in between obligations.
Time is one of the most valuable gifts we can give our loved ones; it’s the one thing we can never buy, borrow, or make more of. Still, it’s too easy to drift through our days on autopilot, allowing other people and priorities to quietly steal our attention and pull us away from the people who matter most.
That’s why choosing to intentionally invest in the time we spend with our families is so essential. Slowing down to evaluate our habits, schedules, and traditions allows us to take back control and spend our time wisely—on the people we cherish the most. Here are a few thoughtful suggestions to do just that:
A unique—and often forgotten—way to create lasting memories is by learning together. Start a new language, pick up a sport like pickleball (and be sure to check out the new courts in The Woodlands!), or cook an entirely untried cuisine from scratch. Take a class together at Sur La Table, or simply experiment with something new in your own kitchen. What makes learning so meaningful is the experience of trying, failing, and ultimately succeeding—side by side.
Meaningful memories feel even more special when they come with something tangible, like getting your hands dirty by starting a garden together or picking up a creative project. Don’t underestimate the power of building something with your spouse, kids, or parent! Creating a family recipe book, assembling a vacation scrapbook, curating a photo wall, or even building a birdhouse—these projects are sure to make lasting memories that you can hold onto.
For wild, unplanned adventures, consider taking inspiration from a “yes day”—a day when the word “no” is off limits—and fun, and possibly a little chaos, sets the tone. Or plan a surprise trip somewhere nearby, to a picnic on the beach in Galveston or to explore one of the beautiful trails in the Sam Houston National Forest. You could also create a challenge day, where you are the “hometown tourist” visiting new places, or a day full of your favorites. Whatever you choose, let the itinerary unfold naturally, and your family just might thank you for it.
There’s something powerful about serving together. Whether that is walking dogs at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter, delivering groceries with

the Montgomery County Food Bank, visiting a nursing home, or signing up for a volunteer day with The Woodlands Township, these shared experiences create meaningful conversations around compassion and the importance of service within the community. Look forward to not only deepening your bonds with one another but with neighbors in need.
Creating new—or seasonal—traditions is another way to spark excitement in the family. Maybe it’s Friday family game night, homemade pizza evenings, Sunday walks, or soup on the first day of fall. The possibilities are endless, and inviting your family into the decision-making process makes it even more special. It’s a simple but powerful way to foster thoughtful conversations about how you want to spend your time together—and build memories everyone can look forward to week after week, season after season.
Investing in your family doesn’t have to be overly complicated or costly; in fact, it can happen right at home—and has a lasting return. This spring, let’s commit to removing distractions and create enduring memories with the ones we love!

An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle

ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.

Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.
A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.
Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?
A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.
Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?
A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.
Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?
A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.
“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”
Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?
A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”
Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.
This conversation barely scratches the surface. Tim goes deeper into the moments that rattled him, the joys of fatherhood, and one story he has never shared publicly until now. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

How Rotary Club of The Woodlands Empowers Emerging Leaders and Sparks Compassion in the Community

For more than 51 years, Rotary Club of The Woodlands has been guided by a powerful ideal, “Service Above Self.” This year’s theme, “Unite for Good,” reflects the club’s commitment to working together to create lasting impressions. That impact is visible throughout the community.
Rotary House, the club’s signature project, has provided more than 1,100 complimentary nights of lodging annually for

“Our mission is simple: serve with compassion and act where we’re needed most.”
qualifying patients receiving care in medical facilities in The Woodlands. It eases both financial and emotional strain, offering families a safe and comfortable place to stay during some of life’s hardest moments. The club is now working to expand Rotary House so even more patients can benefit.
Rotary’s reach extends into partnerships with Interfaith of The Woodlands, Yes to Youth, Angel Reach, and Children’s Safe Harbor. Recently, the club helped establish a music therapy room at Children’s Safe Harbor, providing instruments in collaboration with The Sarah Kelly Music Studio. Rotary also sponsors seven Interact clubs whose students lead local and international service projects each year.
At the heart of this work is a diverse membership, with volunteers ranging from their mid-20s to their late 90s, each contributing time, skills, and heart.
Their commitment ensures that Rotary’s values are not just spoken but lived.
“Our mission is simple: serve with compassion and act where we’re needed most,” says Cindy Heiser, president of Rotary Club of The Woodlands.
Among the next generation of leaders rising within Rotary is Andrés Briceño, founder of the Rotaract Young Professionals group.
When Briceño first connected with Rotary, he wasn’t looking for recognition. He was a young immigrant trying to build a life in a new country, drawn to service because it felt familiar and grounding. He had grown up in Venezuela participating in Rotary and Rotaract, and when he arrived in The Woodlands, he sought out the same sense of purpose and belonging.

He found it quickly. Members welcomed him, encouraged him, and gave him space to lead. Within months, he helped charter the Rotaract Club of The Woodlands, a group designed to connect emerging leaders with service opportunities.
In June 2023, just days after the new Rotaract club was officially chartered, Briceño’s life changed in an instant. Driving home after a late restaurant shift, he was in a car accident. The crash left him with very serious injuries. He spent two weeks in a coma and more than one month in the hospital.
His mother, who speaks little English, was overwhelmed and afraid. Rotary members stepped in immediately. They visited daily, sat with her, translated updates, and made sure she never faced a moment alone. Nurses later told Andrés they had never seen so many visitors for one patient.
When he was discharged, Rotary continued to surround him with support. Members provided a wheelchair, walker, and cane, and later organized a fundraiser to help cover his physical therapy. As he learned to walk again, Briceño found himself strengthened not only by medical care, but by the presence of people who believed in him. This is what Rotary Club of The Woodlands does.
That experience reshaped his understanding of service. It deepened Briceño’s commitment to Rotaract and inspired the vision behind The Next Step Up, a project he now leads to help trauma survivors get back on their feet after a life-changing event. Today, he volunteers on a local congressional campaign, working toward a future in public service and continuing to mentor young leaders through Rotary.
“Rotary supported me in every step even before I was able to walk,” says Briceño. “Now I want to do the same for others.”
His journey shows how support, compassion, and community can change the direction of a life.
Rotary’s presence is woven into daily life: members are visible at community events, in partnership with nonprofits, and contributing to projects that support families, students, veterans, and neighbors in need. Their work connects The Woodlands to a global network of clubs collaborating on clean water initiatives, disease prevention, education, and disaster relief. Many do not realize that the worldwide eradication of polio was largely driven by Rotary International.
Locally, the club’s impact is sustained by dedicated trailblazers who give their time, talent, and heart to individuals.
“Our club is powered by leaders whose service strengthens this community, and seeing emerging members step forward reminds us that Rotary’s mission continues through every generation, building a legacy of compassion that endures,” says Heiser.
As the club looks to the future, its focus remains steady. Members continue to stay closely connected to the region, welcome new generations, and serve as trusted partners and problem solvers, helping to strengthen the area with long-lasting purpose.

It’s that time again, and tax preparers are sending up flares because there are changes impacting the tax-return landscape that we all navigate every year. Inked into law last year, the Working Families Tax Cut, aka the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, brings new regulations with quite a few adjustments to the taxtime paper chase.
Be sure to check with your tax-prep person, but the bottom line is that Americans still have to keep track of everything in order to stay on the straight and narrow with Uncle Sam. The IRS website outlines a need-to-know list that includes new deductions and a lot more.
The Woodlands City Lifestyle asked Melanie Bush, owner and founder of Better Bookkeepers Inc., for tax prep reminders as April 15 approaches:
“The most important element is communication. Your tax preparer or CPA can only do what is communicated to them.”
— Melanie Bush, owner and founder of Better Bookkeepers, Inc.
TWCL: What key forms should we gather before seeing our tax preparers or CPAs?
MB: Make sure you have collected all the requisite forms such as W2s, 1099s, 1098s, etc.
TWCL: When we receive all the forms, are they in their final format?
MB: Often your investment forms may linger. For example, the IRS requires your investment companies have preliminary forms mailed by February 15, but they may not yet be final. It’s crucial to get your preliminary form to your CPA, so they may start and then follow up with the final form.
TWCL: What kind of bookkeeping should we finish before seeing our tax preparers or CPAs?
MB: It’s important to ensure all of your bookkeeping is complete and final. Your tax liability could change drastically if you have not reconciled all your accounts and ensured proper coding. Most CPAs insist on proof of reconciliations in addition to your Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, and Trial Balance. The easiest way to handle this is to contract with a bookkeeper for regular monthly maintenance of your business.
TWCL: Do personal life changes impact our tax returns?
MB: The most important element is communication. Your tax preparer or CPA can only do what is communicated to them. If you had any major changes in your personal status that’s key information (marriage or children), but also any major purchases (cars, boats, etc). These items affect your return. If you sell assets or you start a new investment account, they need to know. As with everything in life, clarity in communication is key.
Tote These Forms Into the Tax Office
Tax prep squads are reminding Americans to keep these handy when rounding up forms and lugging them into the tax office: Photo ID, Social Security cards, Social Security Number verification letters, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number assignment letters, plus birth dates, for yourself, your spouse, and any dependents. And don’t forget bank account and routing numbers for checking or savings accounts at a bank or credit union, prepaid card (check the website listed on your card for deposit instructions), mobile apps for sending and receiving money, the past two years’ tax returns if you have them, and IP PIN if you have one.
