What do we love here in The Woodlands, Texas? All things food, fashion, travel, music and design! And let's not forget it's our favorite time of the year, February starts our Rodeo Season! Speaking of fashion and rodeo, we reached out to the Lucchese Boots team about their new Woodlands location and their iconic collaboration with our very own add country music artist, Parker McCollum. I had the pleasure of personally talking to Parker about his music, hometown roots, creative partnership with Lucchese and his journey up the charts and around the country in his upcoming 2024 tour! We feature the new line of Kendra Scott Jewels and spoke to her about family, Fashion and Philanthropy. Nothing illustrates love more than the story of adoption. Our Life Changing Legacy article introduces us to two families who have experienced the gift of extending their circle of loved ones. I designed my own cowboy hat and you can too! Martha Gene's Hat Bar in Old Town Spring offers everything you need! Choose your hat and personalize with feathers, jewels, bands, etc. A new sculpture has been unveiled to honor the legacy of Coulson Tough and we were there for the emotional ceremony. I hope you enjoy our preview of the Special Olympics coming in March of 2024. We talked to the team of heroes that prepare, host and promote this amazing event, which will be held at The Woodlands High School.

BOOT ROYALTY LUCCHESE MEETS COUNTRY ICON PARKER MCCOLLUM FOR A TRULY TEXAN COLLABORATION

It’s a plain and simple fact, some things are just meant to work together, and the recent collaboration between country star Parker McCollum and Lucchese Boots is certainly a winner. Both quintessentially Texan, their beginnings over 100 years apart, the
family of employees. These boots are a work of art and pass through 180 – 200 hands from start to finish. McCollum has worked with Lucchese to create custom boots of his own, “I started having fun designing boots and had a couple of crazy requests at first to
“THEY LOOK EVEN BETTER THE MORE YOU WEAR THEM” - PARKER MCCOLLUM range of “Parker's Picks” has evolved from his long-time admiration for Lucchese bootmakers. McCollum, who has amassed around 50 pairs of cowboy boots to date, has his own select line of favorites. You can “shop his look” on the Lucchese website for a style that is comfortable yet tough, with more artistry than you can shake a stick at, and McCollum wears them from the stage to the ranch, and everywhere in between! The Lucchese story began in 1868 when Salvatore Lucchese disembarked from a ship in Galveston on which he had sailed from Sicily. Utilizing skills he had learned from his shoemaker father, he opened his first boot-making business in San Antonio in 1883, and began originally making boots for the cavalry, the military and later cowboy boots. Today’s boots have retained many of the original cuts and styles which make them a design classic. Using an organic method the boots are handcrafted and created by accomplished artisans, who pass their skills down through the
see what they’d pull off. I wanted blue king crocodile and they said, ‘Let’s do it!’, they’re awesome boots and I wear them all the time”. McCollum’s custom boots all have his signature embroidered on the pull tab, one of Lucchese’s many unique finishing touches. The recent addition of a Lucchese store to The Woodlands Mall introduces the anticipation of a potential store visit from Parker McCollum. Conroe being his hometown, a large piece of his heart lives here. “I can remember graduating high school, sitting in the seat in the Pavilion thinking – if I ever get big enough, I can come back and play here.” McCollum has indeed played at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion more than once now as well as shows across the USA. One of the pinnacles of his career was performing at The Houston Rodeo in 2022. With family living in Conroe, McCollum enjoys spending quality time with them. If he’s not golfing at Conroe’s Triple C Country Club with his 90-year-old Grandfather, or visiting

friends, he’ll be enjoying the downhome cooking at Vernon’s Kuntry Katfish, Vernon's Kuntry Bar-B-Q , or at his favorite Outback Steakhouse where he would previously spend time as a kid after baseball and church. Raised with strong values and respect he says “I come from the best people in the world - I’ll raise my kids in exactly the same way, you really can do anything you want in life” The McCollum/Lucchese collaboration brings together parallel core principles and practices, McCollum explains “Nothing’s rushed or forced, it all happens very organically – they’re extremely authentic, extremely genuine, their custom handmade boots which have been made the same way for over one hundred years, they’re really aware of their brand and what they stand for, that’s really important for me, that’s how I run my career”. Parker McCollum will be performing across the USA during 2024 with his “Burn It Down” tour. Despite his huge success McCollum still has his feet on the ground, and he says “I feel so normal and that’s a really good thing – everything got bigger and crazy and hectic and a lot more pressure, but I still sleep great at night, and I still love going to the ranch”. McCollum is part of a long list of musicians, celebrities, diplomats and presidents who are Lucchese fans and clients, they select boots for their comfort, craftsmanship and quality materials. Lucchese recently celebrated 140 years with the release of 140 pairs of collectible anniversary boots, named “The Bluebonnet”, the design features The Alamo, Lucchese logo and date amidst an intricate Texas bluebonnet design. Lucchese uses an extensive range of exotic skins “The final coloration would be based on a series of dyes, burnishing and finishing of the boots to get that final color, so they’re all a little bit different”
“A GOOD WORK ETHIC AND SOME GOOD MANNERS WILL OPEN MORE DOORS FOR YOU THAN ANYTHING ELSE” – PARKER MCCOLLUM Doug Hogue, VP of brand and product for Lucchese tells me. “There is an interesting secondary market for Lucchese boots, in particular boots that were made in San Antonio in our original location”. McCollum says, “They look even better the more you wear them”, the quality materials and exquisite workmanship make these boots timeless. Lucchese is now being worn by entire bridal parties at weddings, creating the perfect heirloom to be passed down through generations. There are four Lucchese stores in the Houston area, “We like to meet our clients and our customers where they are” explains Angela Hahn, director of retail stores for Lucchese, “a lot of that involves events like The National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, The Houston Rodeo and different events that pop up like Round Top”. Special edition boots are exclusively available at many of these events. We wait with anticipation to follow the step-by-step journey of this marvelous toe kicking, boot scootin’ covenant of two celebrated Texas leaders.
The legendary bootmaker has expanded into a full lifestyle offering, including apparel, accessories, travel, and leather goods.
Lucchese uses time-honored techniques that have been used for generations.

R E A DY, SE T, OLY M PIC S! Learn How to Support the Athletes Participating in Special Olympics Texas!
ARTICLE BY HEATHER DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

AT H LE T E LIF E | FI TNESS
As spring approaches in the distance, so does one of the most rewarding events for The Woodlands community! Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) is working with The Woodlands Kiwanis Club to put together a track and field event for athletes on March 23rd at The Woodlands High School. This event will be a spectacular way to provide the athletes with practice leading up to the SOTX area regional and state competitions. Event coordinator Royce Brooks started out as a volunteer and soon realized his love for this organization. Almost twenty years later, Royce has never looked back. “To be on the field and hear the special Olympians sing the national anthem is the most moving event,” says Royce. Truly, the mission behind Special Olympics Texas is one to adamantly love and support. On their website, they describe their mission as wanting to, “provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympictype sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.” Through these competitions, their goal is to “develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.” East Region Program Director, Kristen Basel also describes the Special Olympics Texas community as a homecoming where everyone comes together to compete and practice together. “It’s really cool when you know you have community connections and volunteers and can take a step back and live in the moment.” Although I’m already hooked by their mission statement, the history behind the organization is even more heartwarming! Special Olympics Texas began in 1963 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver who started a summer day camp at her home in Maryland. Eunice’s goal was to create a place where children and adults with intellectual disabilities could
explore their capabilities in a variety of physically demanding ways. Several years later in 1968, Chicago Park District and the Kennedy Foundation created the First International Special Olympics Summer Games which had 1,000 athletes from 26 U.S. States as well as athletes from Canada. At the time, the only offered competitive events were athletics, floor hockey, and aquatics. In December of 1968, Special Olympics was established as a non-profit charitable organization under the laws of the District of Columbia, and from there it flourished beautifully! For more history on SOTX, go to www.sotx.org/sotx-history-timeline for an in-depth timeline. Currently, SOTX offers a gigantic variety of competitive sports such as athletics, bowling, cheering, cycling, tennis, aquatics, bocce, powerlifting, and so many others to choose from! They even have several games in the works like the recently popularized pickleball. After athletes choose a particular sports genre, then they must train under a certified coach who understands the rules of the sport and understands the guidelines of SOTX competitions and events. Conroe Stars coach David Knight can attest to the large variety of sports and work it takes to be a part of the organization as he has been involved since 1992. When talking with David, he mentioned that Conroe Stars must train for their event at least eight weeks before they go out and compete or practice for competitions. But what David really loves is seeing his students strive to be their very best and watching them create relationships through these events. “It’s like a big family!” Special Olympics Texas has not only become a huge family, but it’s a community that continues to come together to create an even bigger interconnected family ready to support each other. Now we get to my favorite part of the entire article: the fundraising events! Because SOTX

is a non-profit, they host several different events to raise money which is then used to help feed athletes, coaches, and volunteers as well as support many other aspects of the events. These fundraisers also help raise awareness for Special Olympics Texas. A popular fundraising event is the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Texas which has continued to grow since its original start over forty years ago. As the largest public awareness and grass-roots fundraiser, over 100,000 law enforcement members carry the “Flame of Hope” into the opening ceremony of local competitions. Included in this grand fundraising platform are smaller fundraising avenues
such as Plane Pull, Polar Plunge, and Tip-A-Cop to name a few. The popular fundraising event, Tip-A-Cop partners with Texas Roadhouse where an athlete, aka the guest of honor, pairs with a cop who is the server for the night. Together they raise funds for SOTX as well as spread awareness. There are so many ways to support the athletes of SOTX like donating or volunteering to help make the events something special to remember. If Special Olympics Texas is something you would love to sponsor or become a part of, please contact Kristen Basel at kbasel@sotx.org. All it takes is a loving community willing to support the dreams of those around them!

Kendra Scott was destined to be an entrepreneur from childhood, raised with both parents running their own small ventures, through helping them she learned strong business ethics and practices, which became second nature. Today she is the founder, executive chairwoman and chief creative officer of her own brand. To learn that she began her current business when she had a 3-month-old baby shouldn’t really come as a surprise, her jewelry designs were a component of a previous venture and eventually became the main focal point. “I was designing and making throughout my pregnancy but was reluctant to launch as a business, I would go from store to store with the baby in tow, and take orders for my designs, it just really took off from there” she explains. Now the mother of 3 boys, I asked if any of them were following in her footsteps. “Oh my gosh, 100%, they’ve grown up with the business since they were just babies, I had their pack-n-play in my office, so they’ve been really engaged. Over the pandemic, they started designing a men’s collection, Scott Bros, which we just launched. It’s really cool CONTINUED >

because now they’re the next generation designing something. I didn’t really design men’s jewelry because I didn’t know what men wanted, but now my little babies have grown into that. They are studying business at UT, and have dreams to start their own companies, it’s in their DNA”. Kendra Scott’s Austin ranch is her family home, residence and retreat, where she lives surrounded by the Texas landscape and wildlife. When I asked if nature has a big influence on her designs, she told me - “I can think clearly, when I am around our animals, sometimes when I go horseback riding, my husband and I will take a picnic to have while we’re out. My mind can get cleared and I can think about designs, sometimes I keep a sketchbook in my saddlebag, and I sketch when I’m there. So, nature has always influenced me, going for a hike, or a walk. There are butterflies in this collection, I am so inspired by nature and the best place to do that is in the countryside. We just launched ‘Yellow Rose’ by Kendra Scott, which is all about my ranch and a Texas lifestyle.” The earliest Kendra Scott Designs, which paved the way to today’s empire, were simple friendship bracelets she made as a child, and were woven from colorful threads embellished with charms. There are now 115 stores to date across the USA, with two “Sip and Sweets Cafes”. The Woodlands boasts one located in Market Street, the other is in Austin. Not only is Scott an astute businesswoman who was recently a guest on the business investment TV show Shark Tank, but she is also an inexhaustible philanthropist supporting countless organizations and charities worldwide. The Kendra Scott Foundation supports literacy in education, placing “Little Yellow Libraries” in schools as well as providing grants and scholarships for students. The Kendra Scott Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute at The University of Texas at Austin offers courses, events and programs whilst building a strong community of future female leaders. Kendra Scott is herself a Professor of Practice at UT’s College of Fine Arts and a truly magnificent role model setting a wonderful example of shining bright and doing good.

Having Enough Love to Give and Make a Difference

Young photo of Serenity.
Two families choose adoption and leave a life changing legacy that has affected their families in a most heartfelt way. Skeeter and Bonnie Hubert knew they had enough love to give and make a difference in the life of one youth. The impact on their family was forever changed. “Start with a desire”, said Skeeter Hubert. “The rest will fall into place. I cannot explain how it falls into place; it just does.” At age 15, Serenity came into the Hubert’s home as a foster child, which led to an adoption. Serenity was in survival mode and had an outcry to CPS about her mother’s choices with drugs and other negative associations the young girl knew were detrimental to herself.
Hubert family when Serenity was younger.
As the girl and her mom were moving from a hotel into a house with some men, CPS got involved and placed Serenity in foster care. Unfortunately, the CPS involvement did not scare Serenity’s mother into good behavior as the young girl had hoped. The school was notified of the potential situation that typically might result in school absences. Still, Serenity kept showing up as a reprieve and safe space during the day, not losing hope. One day, Serenity was in Bonnie’s office, who happened to be her school counselor at Conroe High School and was staring at the Hubert’s family photo and said: “That’s all I really want is to have a family.”
As the young student was yearning for something, the Huberts were at a point in their life where they too were seeking and praying about when and if it could be the right time to increase their family. The family met with Serenity on the weekends through various CPS placement homes for family time, and it started the process for the Huberts to become foster parents. It was meant to be as the family embraced Serenity and adopted her as one of their own. The Huberts adopted Serenity Armstrong at age 17 in 2014, and the young girl found a thoughtful way to surprise the family with an enormous Christmas gift that year – she had changed her name to Hubert, and even paid for it herself. One could only imagine the tears of joy shared that morning. CONTINUED >

She has walked in their shoes and is out to help encourage them through her own story. “No matter how imperfect you may think your family or home is, providing a parentless child a forever home will not only bless the child but your home too.” says Skeeter. James and CeCe Ray had always had a heart for adoption since CeCe’s brother was adopted growing up. With three kids of their own, it was not on the radar. As their oldest daughter was getting ready to graduate high school, James had dreams about having kids or adopting. CeCe knew it had to be God-related because they had not been considering adoption.

While the family put their name and applications in with multiple adoption agencies, that is different from how their adoption story came to fruition. Through the grapevine, word spread in the community that the Rays were considering adoption, and CeCe’s cousin’s daughter happened to be seven and a half months pregnant at age 17. She delivered early and asked CeCe to be there for the delivery, and there was no pressure on the girl to give up her baby, as the Rays were looking to adopt an older child. But after three weeks in the NICU, the girl pleaded with CeCe to take her baby and love him as their own, and the baby boy was transferred to Texas, and the Rays brought him home to add to their family with two four-year-old boys. Over a few weeks, the Rays were offered five babies. CeCe was sitting with their newborn, and her cell phone notifications were going off about a social media post that her church pastor posted about a need for a newborn baby boy, born in a bathtub. As others reached out to CeCe as a resource for encouragement, the couple simultaneously knew God had chosen them to adopt that baby boy 24 hours later. In 2019, the Ray family instantly grew with two newborn boys within six weeks. Now the boys are four years old, and the family moved out in the country to Montgomery for more space to raise their family where the boys run outside amidst nature. “It wasn’t in how we intended our story to go, but it goes to show that when we opened up our hearts, God led the way,” shares CeCe. “We had to be open and ready, and God blessed us tremendously.”

THE MARTHA GENE BOUTIQUE AND HAT BAR
The finished design!
Nestled in the quaint community of Old Town Spring, Martha Gene Boutique offers the most wonderful hidden gem. The Hat Bar is a place to get Rodeo ready - it’s a place for friends to gather, couples to meet and for budding designers and western fashionistas to express their artistic flair. The first step is to select your hat from the huge selection of cowboy hats lining the walls, there’s a magnificent selection in all shapes, sizes and styles, bright, neutral and pastel in color, made from a range of materials including vegan leather, felt and straw, all sporting a variety of different brims. Next, personalize your hat! Choose your favorite accents and trims from the many fabulous boxes of charms, findings, feathers, leather laces and bands, chiffons, braided trim and ribbons, as well as some quirky antique matchbooks and playing cards featuring armadillos, jackalopes, there’s even an ace of spades with a bullet hole in the center! Boutique and hat bar owner Krysta Miles and best friend Brittany Carbajol are on hand to advise and assemble your choices, making your design a reality. Upon completion of your design, they offer services such as singeing the edges with a burner for an antiqued look. They specialize in freehand scrollwork, and can burn designs and drawings, patterns, emblems and monograms, special quotes and words onto the surface. The result is a classy western look with an artistic twist. “We can do just about anything on a hat” Krysta tells me. The Martha Gene Boutique and Hat Bar is in its fourth year of business, Krysta was raised by her grandparents, Martha and Gene and chose to honor them with her company name. Martha being a crafty lady who could turn her hand to anything, was a terrific inspiration.

The clothing boutique came first, and Krysta thought the Hat Bar experience would be a fun addition to the store. If you’re unable to visit the Old Town Spring location, there are opportunities to attend numerous pop-up events or even design your own hat virtually, and it will be shipped to you. “There’s not another hat bar where you can come in and get freehand burning done, we are the only one in greater Houston, we were nominated for The Houston Chronicle’s Best of the Best in Western Stores this year.” Martha Gene Boutique is on the up and up and looking to expand this year with a second location. You can reserve your space at the Hat Bar and find out more via marthagene.com

“His life is put together with the symbolism in the statue” — Son, Bruce Tough
52
M UST SE E | ARTS + C ULT U RE
On a glorious December morning a quiet crowd gathered at Coulson Tough Elementary School to honor a Woodlands visionary, developer, planner and architect. The late Coulson Tough, whose birthday coincided with this day of dedication, worked closely with George Mitchell. He led the way with the introduction of public art in our community, resulting in what is now one of the largest outdoor sculpture programs in the country. This latest addition is a sculpture of the man himself, appropriately positioned at the entrance to his namesake school. Coulson Tough Elementary School Principal Christy Julien reminisced about how Mr. Tough would regularly greet the children coming to school and how he would take time to read to them. There are still recordings of him reading stories in the school library. The sculpture, created by Houston artist Bridgette Mongeon, is an interactive life-size bronze featuring Coulson Tough seated on a bench. Designing the sculpture from photographs, Mongeon said she got to know Mr. Tough through the love of his family and was able to realize his energy whilst working on the piece. It’s a symbolic work with details you see when you look closely, “I hope to continue to educate with this sculpture, I hope to come to the school and talk to the kids about writing and art, and science, technology, engineering and math,” Mongeon said. Students can create their own art in the form of brass rubbings from the blueprints he holds in his hands, highlighting prolific buildings he designed such as The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, The Woodlands Waterway Hotel & Convention Center, The Tremont House
Hotel and The San Luis Resort, Spa & Conference Center. His favorite sculpture in The Woodlands - The Dreamer by David Phelps, is also featured. “His life is put together with the symbolism in the statue” stated son Bruce Tough. “He loved building things, he loved creating things, this is a jewel in the crown for him, and being part of The Woodlands and building a city in the forest. He loved education and this is a testament to him”. “I want to thank Howard Hughes for this recognition of my father,” he explained - “The naming of Coulson Tough Elementary was my father’s greatest honor.” “We are proud to embody Mitchell’s legacy and reflect his commitment to education with a new sculpture of one of his most trusted advisors and past leader of our company, Coulson Tough— a sculpture that adds another inspiring and meaningful piece to our acclaimed collection of public art,” said Jim Carman, President, Houston Region for Howard Hughes. The Woodlands is home to over 90 pieces of public art to date. “Art changes the way people feel, you can see it with your soul”, said Dr. Curtis Null, Conroe ISD Superintendent. “We give great thanks to the visionaries who designed and developed this area. Coulson Tough had an impact on not just The Woodlands, but on all of Conroe ISD. We are thankful to be able to honor him and are grateful to Howard Hughes for extending his legacy.” “Every student will remember Coulson along the way”. The six-foot-wide sculpture is designed so you can sit beside him, I couldn’t help but notice how many people naturally held his hand when they did.

BENEFITS OF INFRARED SAUNA AND CRYOTHERAPY
Health and wellness trends are on the rise and are netting impressive health benefits. Despite their polar opposite temperatures, the promising properties of infrared sauna, red light therapy, iv therapy, and cryotherapy can amp up your health regimen. Submersion in both the hot and cold temperatures tackles multiple health benefits in a short amount of time. Hyper Restore Wellness is like treating yourself to a relaxing day at the spa. While you are familiar with the sauna that warms the surrounding air and causes you to become warm, the infrared sauna uses infrared light to actually stimulate heat from the inside out like a mini fever that stimulates your body to detox. The stimulation of sweat helps to improve blood flow and circulation, two necessities in targeting the look of cellulite. And, on top of that, an infrared sauna sweat session could help improve skincare issues. The known healing properties have become a popular addition to supporting a whole-body health regimen that promote faster healing as well.

“Through creative expression from different traditions, art gives voice to the many varied experiences of our community.” The Woodlands’ own Farima Fooladi is remarkable in that she is a painter with the rare ability to combine existing and imagined personal memories with artistic and literary references. “I go for a run through a nature preserve close to home before I paint,” she says. She moved to Creekside in The Woodlands six years ago and is the mother of two. She is originally from Tehran. In the new exhibit, “Nos Populi: We the People”, the featured artist creates complex installations that blur the distinction between fantasy and fact. Womble Bond Dickinson’s office at 717 Texas Avenue in the Houston Skyline District offers a professional workplace for attorneys, patent agents, paralegals, legal assistants, and other legal industry professionals who help clients achieve their business goals. But through June 6, Womble Bond Dickinson’s Houston office also showcases a different type of outstanding work—the creativity of four local artists. WBD has announced its Art & Diversity Initiative, a series of rotating art exhibitions organized to engage with local artists and create greater visibility. This exhibition reflects their interpretation of select themes during an annual two-part series. The theme for the inaugural exhibit is “Nos Populi: We the People.” The new exhibit features works of art highlighting diverse cultures, perspectives, and identities of Houstonians. The exhibition brings together works of accomplished Houston artists Fooladi, John Bernhard, Luisa Duarte, and Nel Gaskin. “We are honored to launch this innovative exhibition because we believe this exhibition reflects our commitment to D&I to and within the greater Houston community,” says Jeffrey Whittle, Managing Partner of the WBD Houston Office.
“We the People” is a celebration of the strength and beauty that can be found in our differences, and provides a reminder that, as a society, we are stronger when we are inclusive,”’ says WBD Patent Agent Azie Aziz Ph.D., the exhibit’s primary organizer. “Our Art & Diversity initiative is aimed to support visual artists, who are often society’s storytellers, to engage with the community. We would like to think these works do tell a story about Houston as well as represent the firm’s core value, which is “respect for the individual,” says The art creates a personal touch and offers mindscapes that offer a chance to think creatively and wander somewhere we might never have imagined before. “Art is a powerful tool for promoting understanding and inclusion,” says Kevin Hall, Chair of the firm’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. “Through creative expression from different traditions, art gives voice to the many varied experiences of our community.” The other artists include John Bernhard, a Swiss-American artist, photographer, and writer who traveled North America extensively before settling in Houston in 1980. He has chosen the medium of photography to explore the everyday world from new perspectives, breaking away into different pathways of artistic expression. Luisa Duarte is an accomplished Venezuelan American multidisciplinary artist has a background in architecture, she has garnered widespread recognition for her distinctive and original artistic style, characterized by sharp-edged shapes that range from composed monotypes to vibrant paintings. Nel Gaskin is a visual artist who paints her pieces from pure imagination, combining emotion and a variety of expressions in the characters she creates.

Live Fierce New Heart Health Initiative
The American Heart Association and St. Luke’s Health Join Together to Improve Heart Health in The Woodlands
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION The American Heart Association in The Woodlands, and throughout Montgomery County, is leading breakthroughs in science and technology and raising awareness of heart disease and stroke treatment and prevention. Through its recent partnership with St. Luke’s Health, the Association is now implementing Live Fierce, a dynamic health program dedicated to saving and improving lives. The Live Fierce campaign will also encourage other organizations in The Woodlands to join in its heart-healthy programming, driving more equitable health for all. Over the next three years, a variety of Live Fierce programs and initiatives will be implemented. Currently, two of the campaign’s goals include healthy nutrition education and blood pressure monitoring, recognized as major health needs within our community. The two organizations will host virtual culinary demonstrations led by Chef Andre, a leading chef from St. Luke’s. The programs will target local seniors and feature heart-healthy recipes aimed at fighting hypertension and high blood pressure. Those suffering from cancer, as well as their families, will be a key audience of the culinary demonstrations. Participants will have the chance to register for the events online and then watch the livestream videos from their own kitchens. Additionally, thanks to the generous partnership with St. Luke’s, the American Heart Association is working with Interfaith Ministries to better implement blood pressure monitoring systems. Our support will provide Interfaith with 3 portable blood pressure machines to accurately measure patient blood pressure. Interfaith will also be the recipient of a stationary Blood Pressure Kiosk, allowing their clients utilizing other community-based services the ability to check and monitor their blood pressure outside of the clinic. Tips around managing risk factors will also be available at the kiosk.
