Horses and Dogs and Kids... Oh My!

Welcome to our August "Kids and Pets" issue!

The summer is wrapping up and what a hot one it was here in The Woodlands. Even the kiddos will probably be relieved to get back into air conditioned classrooms rather than brave anymore of the heat and humidity outdoors.

We all love our pets - our fur babies, grand dogs, pups and kitties. We hope you enjoy our cover story on Oaklee the celebrity therapy dog/sunroof surfer!

However, some animals are not as lucky as others. We have such a huge population of homeless animals and it is so important that we learn how to help. It starts with education about preventing more unwanted animals. As I type this, our new rescue pup is lying in her kennel after my husband and daughter saved her life by picking her up from a rural dumpster in Louisiana. Not only did they save her, but they more than likely saved multiple unwanted litters from being born in that area if she had not been found. It does make a difference to help just one! Our story on Nelda Luce Blair and her work with the Humane Society of Montgomery County sheds light on her efforts to re-home pets and help raise funds for animal rescue and welfare groups in our community.

We curated a list of fine equestrian centers that provide boarding and riding lessons. Horses are such beautiful creatures and learning how to ride and care for them properly makes for a lifelong hobby for kids and adults.

Our kiddos can enjoy healthy summer snacks brought to you by Erin Thole, Certified Natural Healthcare Practitioner. She offers tips for summer health such as smoothies and sun and heat protection.

Yes to Youth is a non-profit that is here to help our youth in crisis.  Our story focuses on the counseling services that help with some of the mental health issues impacting our youth.  The  2023 Yes to Youth Gala - Bloom will be held in August and helps to raise funds for those kids.

The issue wouldn't be complete without ART! We feature author Marcus Bridgewater - "Garden Marcus" - and children's artist and painter Cheryl Pilgrim.

We wish the kiddos a bright and exciting new school year. I will be in Florida taking my son Gray to college in August so wish me luck!

OAKLEE THE CELEBRITY THERAPY DOG

A word from Julie Johnson, Oaklee’s Mom.

Q: WHERE DID YOU GET OAKLEE?

THE STORY BEHIND THE SUNROOF SURFER, OAKLEE

Hi, I am Oaklee. I’m still a puppy and only 1 ½ .  My mom was a Bernedoodle and my dad was a full size Standard Poodle.  I don’t look like either one of them. I love to go with my humans everywhere. They take me on trips. I have been to Nashville, Hot Springs, Austin and San Antonio.  I travel very well. I love to sunroof surf with my goggles on. You may have seen me around town! I love to see people happy and they always smile and wave while I am chilling out of the sunroof.  A lot of people know my name wherever I go.

I am very patient and am happy to do what I am told to do.  I don’t get to swim because of my long hair, but I am ok with that. My life is really good and I am always ready for the next adventure!

I love to go to the nursing home.  The people are always so happy to see me. They are never ready for me to leave their room. They pet me and hug me and are always amazed by my hair! Look for me sunroof surfing and I’ll wave back!

Years ago I saw a friend’s Bernedoodle and from that moment I knew I had to have one!  I saved my birthday and Christmas money for several years and actually happened upon Oaklee locally. She was just down the street and was available for pick up immediately.  She is an F1b Bernedoodle which means she is approximately 75% Poodle and 25% Bernese Mountain Dog. She will be 2 at the end of November.

Q: WHEN DID YOU NOTICE SHE HAD A TALENT FOR THERAPY?

We knew right away that she had a calm demeanor and I had always wanted to have a therapy dog that could spread joy to those in need.  We are registered with Therapy Pet Pals of Texas and visit a local nursing home.  Our goal is to start visiting with children and families in crisis as well.

Q: TELL US ABOUT OAKLEE’S PERSONALITY?

She is just happy all the time.  Of course, with great training from GAB Kennels in Conroe, she is a very well-behaved dog and at just four months old she passed the AKC Canine Good Citizenship course, which is required to be a therapy dog. We have socialized her in every way we can.  She has been in a parade and attended fireworks shows to get exposed to every stimulation possible. Oaklee loves to go out and see people. She feeds off of their joy. People will thank us for giving them a smile they needed, cry because she touches a deep emotion, or just relax from petting her soft fur. She brings out the best in everyone and thrives on human interaction.

Q: HOW DID SHE GET INTO THE FORD COMMERCIAL/DOGGIE TALENT?

A close friend of mine sent Oaklee’s picture to her friend that is a Dog Wrangler.  From there she submitted her picture to an advertising agency and Oaklee was cast in the 2023 Ford Bronco ad on Ford’s website.

Q: OBVIOUSLY SHE’S A LOOKER! CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE GROOMING?

Oaklee’s hair is very important and is a big part of her personality.  She goes to the groomer every three weeks for a scissor cut and trim of the three F’s; face, feet and fanny!  She stays long year round and has never been shaved.  Keeping her coat free of matting allows plenty of air flow through it, thus helping regulate her body temperature.  During the summer we keep her cool with an ice collar when we are out and about and of course, plenty of drinking water.

A REAL SOURCE FOR “PAWS-ITIVITY”

“Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend, never had a dog,” has been attributed to actress Mae West, but could just as easily be a quote from Nelda Luce Blair. As President of the board for the Humane Society of Montgomery County (HSMC), Nelda is able, in turn, to be a great friend to many area dogs and cats.

Locally born and raised, Nelda has always been involved with the animal shelter, first serving as a member of their board of directors in the late 1980s. At various times since its founding in 1972 for “the prevention of cruelty of animals,” HSMC has acted as a rescue, operated the animal shelter, and offered spay/ neuter programs. Five years ago, Nelda once again accepted a board position as the organization revamped their focus. With the “Same Mission, New Vision”

rebranding, HSMC now works to promote animal welfare by assisting other nonprofit groups with their extraordinary needs.

“It’s a great way for everyone to better work together and help the rescues get the things they otherwise might not be able to access,” she said. “With our funding, we’re able to help with bigger ticket items.”

For example, this past July, HSMC provided $35,000 to Montgomery County Animal Services to cover the cost of flying 100 dogs to a mega adoption event in Philadelphia. Another 100 dogs will be transported there in vehicles, according to Live Release Manager Courtney Gawel. The annual event will result in homes for more than 1,000 cats and dogs arriving from across the country and has been the model for mega adoption events in Houston as well.

“This is so important,” Nelda said. “It helps with the overpopulation at our shelter while moving dogs to an area where people are begging for pets. I’m so thrilled we have the funds to do this for the second year and make a real impact.”

Her volunteer position with the Montgomery County Community Foundation is another way in which she is able to make a difference in the lives of our community, including the four-legged members. A grant to the Lone Star Animal Welfare League (LSAWL) allowed them to forward their mission to spay/neuter, vaccinate and chip pets in need. “We need to continue educating the community about how spaying, neutering and vaccinating will make our pets and our community healthier,” said Laura McConnell, President of LSAWL.

Moses is the newest addition to the family!

AniMeals, an extension of Meals on Wheels, provides food for over 300 cats and dogs belonging to homebound seniors each month. The program is fully reliant on donations, which during the pandemic, almost completely dried up. HSMC through Nelda donated enough pet food to cover the program’s needs for a year.

“I’ve always had a special connection with all animals,” she said. “They are God’s creatures, and it is one of my main purposes in this life to care for them.” That purpose is also Nelda Luce Blair’s passion and, ultimately, a real source of “paws-itivity.”

The Montgomery County Humane Society offers a number of ways to support their efforts to keep pets and animals loved. Visit their website at montgomeryhumane.com for a complete list of ways to help.

for the LOVE OF HORSES

“Horseback riding has tremendous benefits,” Anita Varadaraju says. “With horseback riding, my daughter Ria focuses on something besides herself. It has made her more empathetic, more compassionate. A better human being.” It has also made Ria and Peanut Butter, her American Saddlebred horse, top competitors in English Country Pleasure riding.

Horses have roamed the earth for 55 million years, granted some were the size of dogs rather than 16.1 hands tall like Peanut Butter. Over 4000 years ago, man decided to harness the power of these majestic creatures. Horses carried men into battle, brought settlers West, and worked the fields.

Horses could have gone by the wayside with the invention of cars and machinery. Instead, they garnered a more esteemed position. They became beloved partners in the sport of horseback riding.

Sometimes horseback riding is seen as an activity rather than a sport. “If it wasn’t a sport,” Kris Harrelson of Two Stride Farm in Spring says, “it wouldn’t be in the Olympics.” Four-horse chariot races made their Olympic debut in 682 B.C.E.

It’s easy to underestimate the sport’s athleticism because the best riders make it look effortless. It isn’t. “You’re dealing with a thinking, feeling being,” Kris says. “It’s not a robot or a carousel

horse.” Your horse has a mind of its own. Learning to communicate with your horse takes hours of practice to make a ride look easy.

But parents say there are no battles of will over putting in the time. You know how sometimes a kid doesn’t want to go to softball practice? This never happens with riding lessons, one grandpa says. For one thing, the common love of horses makes kids fast friends. A mom watching her daughter canter around Two Strides’ arena agrees. We tried all types of sports, she says. Horseback riding is it!

Kris and fellow instructors, Erin Harrelson and Micah Cranford, teach English hunting and jumping. They use eight lesson horses, some rescued and given a new lease on life. With individual personalities and behaviors, “every horse has something to teach,” Kris says, “and every student has something to learn.”

The instructors also train, coach, and accompany riders to local, regional, and national hunter and jumper events. Like other equestrian centers, upperlevel students lease or own their horses. “We don’t just teach horseback riding,” Kris says, “we teach horsemanship.” Kids linger after lessons caring for and pampering their horses.

Augusta Pines Farm is primarily a show barn with riders who compete year-round on pampered European warmbloods. To get a taste for the sport, owner Cindy McCampbell offers beginner lessons in hunter and jumper horseback riding. Kids learn on school horses and compete in local events. If they fall in love with the sport and advance to the show program, students take part in prestigious regional and national events. With this level of commitment, kids jump in with both feet and their parents lease or “buy four feet that all need shoes!” Cindy says.

At equestrian events, riders compete based on their experience level rather than age or gender. This is one of the many aspects of horseback riding that Monique Rideau, the lesson program director, appreciates. In fact, Olympic equestrian events are the only ones in which men and women compete against each other. Gender doesn’t matter.

Brute strength won’t control a horse. Nonverbal communication with the reins, your legs, and your seat will. As students learn to “ask” clearly and their horses respond, confidence grows. Along with boosting confidence, horseback riding teaches kids to be patient, pay attention to details, and take responsibility. “Sometimes you need to accept that there’s no one

to blame but yourself,” Monique says, “and learn from your mistakes.”

Carli Kirsch, co-owner of North Houston Horse Park, likens horseback riding to being a pilot. The rider needs to guide and be in control of the horse.  Unlike an airplane, though, the rider needs to earn the horse’s trust to reach the team’s full potential.

Carli and Melanie, her mother and the equestrian center’s co-owner, teach hunter and jumper disciplines. “We take students as far as they want to go,” Carli says. “There’s no pressure to compete.” If they do choose to compete, though, Carli and Melanie coach and accompany riders to competitions.

For Melanie, the greatest value of horseback riding is developing a strong work ethic. She quickly adds that horseback riding does wonders for a child’s self-esteem. Some kids are shy; some have been bullied. Successfully piloting a 1000-pound animal in a safe, bully- and drama-free space is a tremendous confidence booster.

Horseback riding is a way to connect with nature and cut back on screentime. Many new students arrived during Covid for this reason and continue to enjoy the “sunshine, happiness, and horses,” Carli says. Whether they ride for recreation or to compete, being astride a horse boosts kids’ self-esteem and gives them a new — and higher — perspective.

May Chadick, owner and trainer at Vantage Point Farm in Tomball, teaches English saddle seat, Western and hunter pleasure riding, and carriage driving. She uses Hackney ponies and American Saddlebred horses. She’s adopted several from Saddlebred Rescue. The variety of lessons means there’s something for everyone.

Students may ride for recreation or compete in equestrian events on one of the school’s show horses or a horse of their own. “I very much believe in empowering kids,” May says. To that end, she structures lessons so a child can succeed and be empowered, no matter what her abilities are. May wants the child to “get off the horse feeling like a rock star!”

With three decades of teaching and coaching, May is thrilled with the horse show successes, including Ria and Peanut Butter’s impressive record. Whether they win or not, May has pride in her students. “We have never had a student that ended up in a bad place or chose the wrong path,” she says, knocking on wood. “We have great kids. . . I am incredibly proud of how they’ve grown up.”

NUTRITION: A SUMMER CHECKLIST

DIVE INTO A HEALTHY SUMMER WITH TIPS FROM FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE PRACTITIONER ERIN THOLE, CNHP

The body is a unique mechanism that takes years of research and studying to understand. Even today, scientists are still uncertain how diseases ignite within the body. Fortunately, passionate people like Erin Thole dedicate their lives to a holistic approach when working with the body. Having worked as a personal trainer earlier in her life, Erin’s love for nutrition and health has always been evident in her lifestyle. Because of her passion, Erin went on to obtain her Certified Natural Healthcare Practitioner Certificate through Trinity School of Natural Health. Currently, she is working toward her PhD in naturopathy. Since 2008, Erin has worked with a variety of conditions such as celiac, autoimmune conditions, cancer, and female hormonal balance. When dissecting problems, Erin not only looks at the symptoms but also health history and what the whole body is saying in order to find the root cause. These problems are found through extensive panel tests which are part of her Whole Health Project, a three-month program that dives into making your health dreams into reality. Erin makes it extremely easy to obtain her services. Her practice is based online through email and phone which makes it easily accessible for people all over the nation. She also provides seminars and podcasts for additional information. All of her information can be found on her website, erinthole.com

Summer is a time to go outside and enjoy the nature around you while exercising caution against harmful sun rays. As a resident of The Woodlands, Erin knows just where to take children during the summer which favors both the inside and outside. The Woodlands Children’s Museum offers a cooler adventure for the summer days that are just too hot to bear. Alternatives to swimming include The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and splash pads. When none of these options sound exciting, Erin will take her children outside to a park to go for nature walks. “They get super stoked about a stick that they’ve found or a bug,” describes Erin when talking about the curiosity nature sparks in her kids. Allowing children to explore and discover new things on their own creates simple yet pleasant memories of summer. Of course, we can’t forget about the most exciting activity of the summer: swimming!  While swimming is the most sought-after activity for kids during the summer, Erin warns against forgetting sunscreen. When asking Erin about her favorite sunscreen, she mentioned the brand BeautyCounter as an exceptional brand. BeautyCounter’s sunscreen is toxin-free and used with only the cleanest ingredients. In fact, with over 2,800 ingredients banned from their skincare line, a grouping they call The Never List, you can guarantee that no harmful chemicals are infiltrating your children while they are having fun in the sun. While Erin’s outdoor recommendations are excellent, her tips about food and hydration are even better!

Eating healthy is fun!

As a nutrition specialist with young children, Erin knows a thing or two about how to keep kids happy and healthy during the excruciatingly hot summer months. Her most important tip is to hydrate! “You should drink half of your body weight in water a day,” says Erin. One tip for staying hydrated is to gingerly add electrolytes. Erin mentioned that adding a pinch of sea salt or Himalayan salt to your water helps with hydration. Another one of Erin’s favorite resources is an electrolyte pouch called LMNT. She recommends not using the entire pouch, but instead using half a pouch per 40 ounces of water. When lunchtime rolls around, kids need healthy lunch and snack options that not only keep them hydrated but will also fuel them with plenty of energy. An easily nutritious lunch to throw together is hummus spread on deli meats rolled up along with a fresh and crisp salad. Since salad may not be an exciting option for kids, Erin also recommends loading them up on multiple fruits such as watermelon to also help with keeping them hydrated. Popsicles are also another fun summer addition, but Erin says making them yourself is quite simple. Her favorite combination is putting a puree of strawberry, lemon, and honey into popsicle molds and

freezing them for her kiddos to enjoy the next day. Salty snacks such as pickles and turkey jerky are also excellent additions to the summer rotation. If you’re looking for an easier, hassle-free option to grab from the store, Erin recommends Serenity Kids pouches for kids. Unlike traditional pouches loaded with sugar, Serenity Kids has less sugar than other brands and includes puree from 100% grass-fed and pasture-raised meats. Erin’s passion for nutrition shines through not only her knowledge but through the multiple shining testimonies that each describe a story of nutritional freedom.

Plant a Garden...

SOWING THE SEEDS OF WELLNESS WITH GARDEN MARCUS

It has often been said that gardeners live longer, the time we spend nurturing and growing our gardens, working in nature and getting physical exercise is perhaps a contributing factor. I recently spoke with Marcus Bridgewater about how his love of gardening has changed his life, his outlook, as well as his journey forward, and how he inspires and guides others to do the same.

Not so long ago, Marcus was in a job where working lengthy hours afforded him little to no free time and left him exhausted at the end of a busy work week. Taking solace in his garden he spoke with a visiting friend about the life analogies he observed whilst cultivating his plants. Pointing out the importance of his observations, this friend, encouraged him to go public with his thoughts and expertise and offer these insights on social media. Now a full time CEO, creator and educator, Marcus pulls inspiration and insightful observations from his garden which he shares to help and mentor others. The friend, Dana, is now his business partner and wife.

Soon after Garden Marcus introduced himself on popular social media platforms, the roots of the pandemic were beginning to take hold, forcing us to stop and adjust our routines and lifestyles. It was during this time of contemplation which allowed his followers,

like his plants, to grow tall and strong, they spread far and wide, and relished the nurturing and wisdom that he offered whilst partaking in something simplistic, organic, inexpensive and available to everyone.

Working with children is something that happened by chance for Marcus, offering weekly YouTube guided meditations, his regular followers began to participate with their kids, his soothing voice, energy and calmness offer a welcome opportunity to embrace stillness, introspection and be at one with ourselves. “Fostering community,” says Marcus, “is about reaching all people, it takes a village”.

The ancient practice of gardening is good for us on so many levels, whilst focusing our attention of the aesthetics of our surroundings we can also grow our own herbs, fruit and vegetables, which in turn, improve our diet, having flowers and plants as part of our environments aids our wellbeing. An increase in serotonin, which reduces anxiety, is released when we cultivate plants, whether they be indoors or outdoors, the benefits of this practice are plentiful. Gardening has been scientifically proven to help with countless health issues, so it’s a win win. Feeling the soil in our hands has a grounding effect, reconnecting us with the earth. Gardening can be a sociable

pastime too or one of solitude where we give ourselves some space and alone time.

Daily social media posts from Garden Marcus help to keep us on track, these short bursts of wise words offer just enough guidance for the day ahead, where we can relate to certain situations, the past and our own journeys. They are uplifting and encouraging in the garden path of life and help us to see things from a different perspective, which can ultimately be game changing, this happens when we step back and question where we are and what are we doing, is it right for us, and most importantly, are we happy?

With his first book “How To Grow”, being a resounding success as a wellness and self-help manual as well as a gardening guidebook, he has a second book launch approaching with a picture book which is perfect for children as well as grown-ups.

With interviews in Vogue Magazine and The New York Times, Garden Marcus has also appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show, she is an avid fan! He has cultivated a TikTok following of almost 700K with Instagram close behind, Marcus has remained grounded, approachable and a pleasure to converse with.

Garden Marcus is an offshoot of his company “Choice Forward”, which offers workshops and seminars, motivational speaking, and wellness retreats. These events explore the aspects of kindness, patience and positivity promoted and celebrated through his life coaching and unique approach to mental health issues, physical fitness and spiritual awareness. Extensive travel and study, the observations of different cultures and lifestyles have culminated in the ability to teach individuals and groups in self-improvement, wellness and community consciousness.

So, what’s next in the garden of Marcus Bridgewater? Marcus and Dana recently shared the most important update of their life, a little seedling. Their first baby will arrive in September, congratulations on their future growth into a family.

Our world is a very different place these days, not only for those of us who have been around for a while, but for our youngest generation, our littlest ones, born into a brand-new era, a fast age which is constantly accelerating, upgrading and uploading. Taking time for stories can easily be neglected, those special moments of focus and contemplation, listening to the words, looking at the pictures, being absorbed in the story without interruption.

Artist and children’s story illustrator Cheryl Pilgrim has been inspired by the art narrative since she was a child, growing up in Fort Worth she regularly visited the Sid Richards Museum and was enchanted by the works of Frederic Remington, other influences include Norman Rockwell and author and illustrator, E. B. Lewis. Picture books have a universal appeal, where the story is told in the visuals, and can be “read” just by looking, for children it’s a great focusing tool and confidence builder which helps build early reading skills.

An initial career in education eventually led to a career in art, and Pilgrim now creates outstanding illustrations for numerous children’s books.  To view her work is to reminisce over a more innocent time, it’s like a hug from the past, holding us securely and safely. An expert in capturing the wide-eyed curiosity of a child, Pilgrim’s adorable illustrations are gentle and nostalgic. Children and animals adventure in an ambiance of whimsy and fun. These drawings and paintings are beautifully executed in watercolor, acrylic, pencils, charcoal and mixed media, soft and smudgy, comfortable and cuddly, fluffy and delicately tinted, this is the stuff that dreams are made of.  Animals feature prominently in her work, with personas of their own, artistic armadillos knit and paint, farm animals dance to the rhythm of the drumming rain, we can chase butterflies and rainbows, sail in canoes at midnight beneath the twinkling stars, and cavort with the forest animals all day long.   Working from a purpose build studio adjacent to her home, the art of illustration is a solitary pursuit in which Pilgrim favors quiet time in this private place to get “in the zone” and lose herself in her work.  Initially working on preliminary sketches to send to publishers, then later perfecting them to finished, more detailed works. As well as illustrating for other writers, she is the author and illustrator of

“Big and Little”, a book of opposites, published by Holiday House. Inspired by the personalities of her 2 rescue dogs, a brave chihuahua and a fearful black labrador, who embark on an adventure, exploring a world of opposites along the way. It’s a beautiful book with a lovely message and would make the most charming animation!

Pilgrim has a great love for animals and donates her creative skills to a biannual event for pet charity, Friends 4 Life, at these events she paints pet portraits to help raise funds for this worthy cause.

Three times winner of the poster competition for the yearly Texas Arts and Crafts Fair in Kerrville, she depicts Texas animals in humorous creative situations. She can also be found exhibiting her own work at the fair.

Pilgrim’s educational background means she recognizes the need for teacher resources, and has created learning experiences to complement her stories, including songs, poems, games and other activities which can be utilized as part of classroom studies.  The visuals in her books make learning fun and interesting for the students as well as the educators. Pilgrim enjoys visiting schools with her publications as well as classroom zoom presentations.

It’s been a busy summer for the children and their families at YES to YOUTH - Montgomery County Youth Services. Group sessions and peer counseling combined with fishing trips, art activities, sporting events, and visits with furry friends help bring healing to kids in crisis. The children do what makes sense to them, from journaling to communicating their emotions to the necessary family work in a safe space.

The mission is a proactive approach to supporting the physical and mental well-being of at-risk children. “YES to YOUTH provides crisis intervention and counseling services to children and families from all walks of life and backgrounds. We offer a shelter—a safe and nurturing home—for displaced youth as well,” says Michele Kooken, Chief Executive Officer, YES to YOUTH.

A CHANCE TO BLOOM

Whether a child faces emotional struggles, behavioral issues, or homelessness, YES to YOUTH is a much-needed community resource. Services are offered at no cost because every life matters.

Zach Richmond, past Chairman of the Board, notes that a flower, even in a crack in the pavement, will grow if it’s watered. “Out of hardships come opportunities to bloom,” he says.

Many parents didn’t grow up in the online world of cyberbullying. They may not be aware of what kids are exposed to on apps and social platforms that influence and drive behavior. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” says Richmond. “Awareness is everything.”

He notes that YES to YOUTH is often the first responder at local school districts and that the free counseling services make a huge difference.

There are many success stories of youth growing into successful adults with opportunities to become nurses, teachers, chefs, engineers, or the next CEO.

“When you donate and support YES to YOUTH, you’re making a difference. You’re helping families in crisis. You’re keeping kids off the streets and giving them a future,” says Richmond.

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT

Shelby Chaddick, Director of Counseling, YES to YOUTH, often shares a quote by clinical psychologist Dr. Russell Barkley: “The kids who need the most love will ask for it in the most unloving of ways.”

Children have endured a lot in the past couple of years, notably changes in school routines and isolation from friends. The more commonplace stressors such as divorce, the passing of a grandparent, or moving to a new area can exacerbate feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and anger and result in acting out.

Although mental health has not always been a mainstream topic, the pandemic opened up healthy discussions among the public. “Talking about the struggles that our youth experience gives the community opportunities to help,” says Kooken.

For every 970 individuals in Montgomery County, there is only one mental health provider. The national

average is 330 to one. “These are our neighbors. These are our kids,” says Kooken. “This is why YES to YOUTH is such an important resource for the most vulnerable in our area. Supporting the Yes for Youth mission helps the organization save lives by treating not just the symptoms but the causes.”

THE BLOOM GALA

This year’s YES to YOUTH Gala is slated for August 12th, right around the corner. There is no better theme than “bloom.” This one word captures the whole purpose of this annual gathering—to reach more children in need and help them thrive.

The Bloom Gala will honor Kristin L. Young and The Howard Hughes Corporation. Andrea Aertker, Tiffany Baker, Kristin English, and Bethany Shrewsberry are the 2023 Gala Chairs.

THE FUSION OF CULINARY, FINE WINE AND ARTISTIC CREATIONS

The Wine + Food Week event was launched and created by Constance McDerby along with her husband Clifton nineteen years ago in Galveston, Texas. The attendance at that time was approximately 300 people. The following year Wine + Food event attendance tripled and then the following year tripled in attendance again!  When Constance moved her Wine and Food event to The Woodlands in 2005, attendance reached 4000+ participants. The Woodlands embraced the idea of world renowned chefs and sommeliers bringing their best to our community.

Constance would be the first to acknowledge the help of 500+ people who volunteer their efforts to make this event one of the top ten culinary and wine events in the country. “So much goes into preparing, presenting and activating the elements of Wine & Food Week. Each year we see our partners up their game which exponentially increases the quality of the patron experience.

Since its inception, this annual event has blossomed into a highly anticipated cultural phenomenon, captivating the palates and senses of attendees from near and far and this year (2023) for the first time, the ‘Arts’ has now been included to further demonstrate how this event has evolved. Artists with live paintings, ballet ensembles dancing, electric violinist serenading guests, and beautiful artwork featured on the labels of fine wines played into the overall theme. “We are also big believers that art, like wine and food, feeds our souls so we are paying tribute to that idea with this year’s theme, as well as highlighting The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival  and New Danville  which are event beneficiaries. Chefs and winemakers alike treat their craft much like an artist does making sure each dish or wine is a true work of art,” added McDerby.

The equal “Art” is presented by a tapestry of culinary excellence, regional flavors and artistic expressions all merging into a highly anticipated cultural phenomenon, captivating the palates and senses of attendees from near and afar. Chef and Owner of Pacha Nikkei, Masaru Fukuda, won Top Honors with the Chef of Chefs Award and won $5,000.00 for honors by Goya Foods.

The wine component of the event was equally extraordinary. Domestic and International winemakers have congregated in The Woodlands, presenting a diverse array of varietals, blends and vintages to

The Bronco Power Boost

The New Essential in Your Home

The story of the Bronco Power Boost starts with Billy’s former business of installing gas- powered generators in Nashville, TN. When three potential customers had their permits denied by HOAs in the space of a week, Billy knew he would have to find a solution or go into another business. The dilemma caused him to awaken at 3 a.m. with an idea that would change his life. The following wee hours resulted in a sketch of the Bronco that would eventually end up on his patent.

For the next month, Billy worked on the Bronco on the wall of his garage and applied for a patent pending. A few weeks later he was in meetings with ABC’s Shark Tank. This was when Billy thought, “I’m really onto something.” Soon after, the Bronco Power Boost had its full utility patent and UL approvals.

So, what is the Bronco Power Boost? Billy’s simplest answer is this: “I’m going to put a box beside your electrical panel that’s going to save your electricity in it. When you have a power outage, it is going to switch over automatically and run the essentials in your home.”

The standard Bronco battery will run the essentials in the house like garage doors, refrigerators, living room (including ceiling fan, lights, Wi-Fi, TV, receptacles to charge cell phone and laptop) master bedroom (lights and receptacles for CPAP and medical equipment) and in most cases your whole office. When the power comes back on, the Bronco will automatically recharge. The unit is hands and maintenance free, and the LIFEPO 4 battery will keep you in power for 16 to 20 hours, with the option to add additional plug and play batteries for power extension up to several more days.

The Bronco may have started out in Billy’s garage, but it didn’t spend much time there. After building only 150 units, he received a call from the VP of Howard Hughes. The real estate development corporation wanted to run a Bronco promotion in their Woodland Hills and Bridgeland communities. The expected order of 30 Broncos turned into 150, and that is when the Bronco Power Boost began its steep scale upwards.

With Billy at the helm, even during its short lifespan, Bronco Power Boost has not remained static, and improvements are ongoing. Ayantra, a California based software/hardware company, has made the Bronco smart, and the unit works on a cellular-based system that sends updates directly to the customer.

Popular On-Wall Garage or Exterior Wall Demand-Response-Ready Battery System

Through this, the units are integrated to perform demand response with ERCOT and local utility should you option in. With the addition of two solar panels, the Smart Bronco will automatically run your home for free whenever the sun shines. It’s clear that Billy and his Bronco are just getting started.

Billy went to the Ion District in Houston to find investors and was able to secure a deal with a Houston Investment Group. Bronco Power Boost now has its own campus right here in Houston, an impressive progression in only three years. The company is now in over 12 states, and its spread is growing fast. The Bronco Power Boost is manufactured here in the Houston plant creating jobs in our city.
