The Woodlands is a treasure trove of art and culture, especially each spring when Fidelity Investments The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival is in high gear. This annual event is a proud tradition in The Woodlands, now celebrating its 18th year in 2023. Presented by The Woodlands Arts Council, its success is credited to hundreds of talented creatives, thousands of visiting art lovers, more than 500 volunteers, and a community that embraces this one-of-a-kind celebration. juried by a committee of published authors and librarians, who are participating in book signings, book readings, activities, and games. There’s an exciting opportunity for the next generation of wordsmiths to apply in a writing scholarship competition as well!

THE ART DASH The highly anticipated Art Dash Party, produced by The Woodlands Arts Council and presented by The Woodlands Compounding Pharmacy, is slated from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm on April 14 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott. Attendees mix, mingle, and enjoy light bites and cocktails with VIP artists, and then participate in a 60-second “dash” for artwork to take home. “Attending the Art Dash Party is an exciting way to get to know the artists and at the same time support our student art scholarship program,” says Jenny Carattini-Wright, Executive Director of The Woodlands Arts Council.

MEET THE FEATURED ARTIST 2023 Featured Artist Cathra-Anne Barker was born in Harlingen, lived in Dallas, and moved out of the state when she was ten years old. “I drew an elephant as a toddler and have been an artist ever since. I was recognized and encouraged by my teachers, and my education in those early years also set me up for a lifetime of literacy,” she says. There’s a backstory behind her unusual name. Her mother loved the novel Wuthering Heights

and the heroine Catherine, nicknamed Cathy. Her father came up with Cathra-Anne. “It was the only original thing that he, as an accountant, had ever done,” says Barker. She and her husband Richard Meyer owned a retail studio in San Diego, California for 24 years, and then moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they are both master potters and sell exquisite ceramics from their website. “Since most of my artwork is sold online, I enjoy traveling to The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival every year and meeting buyers in person,” says Barker. This will be her 17th appearance, and she notes that face-to-face interaction and enthusiastic art lovers are what bring her back. She created two auction pieces, a paired jar and vase motif titled “Turtle Pond” for the Art Dash, which she calls a blast of a party!

Iconic Texan sculptor James Surls with a selection of his work

A Gift fromThe Bower Iconic Texan sculptor, James Surls, celebrates his 80th birthday this year, I was incredibly honored to chat with him about his life, work and upcoming celebrations. Some artists have a recognizable style from the get-go, born in the rural community of Terrell, East Texas, Surls has always been an artist, from an early age he was good at making things, not always functional, or for any other purpose than having beauty and form, sculptures! Graduating from Sam Houston University in 1966, then continuing

his education further afield, he became a professor and taught sculpture in Dallas for 8 years, eventually relocating to Houston after accepting a position at The University of Houston. Recognizing the need for a creative hub for his students, he founded Lawndale Alternative Arts Space in the late 1970’s. Lawndale began as a concept offering studio and exhibition space to students, eventually, exhibiting the works of other artists. Lawndale has grown into today’s

nonprofit art center presenting frequent exhibitions, talks and special events in Houston. Talking with Surls is a poetic experience, his eloquence being an extension of his physical work, which is aesthetically beautiful with meaningful content. A lifetime of work that has been greatly shaped by the terrain, landscape and natural elements of his childhood hometown, directly influenced by living a life encompassed by nature, a communication with the elements and forms of his surrounding environment. The desire to return to a natural environment led, Surls and his wife, sculptor Charmaine Locke, to the Splendora area where they purchased a small cabin in the forest. This relocation was about “moving home”, melding into the earth, the trees, the landscape, the nature which has been his muse since birth. Living and breathing as part of the forests, green grass, rivers, rocks and blue sky, these fundamentals are reminiscent of his past, they nurture the art and stir up memories. Surls refers to the Spendora location as “The Green Envelope”, where immersed in nature the couple were able to eat, sleep and breathe their individual sculptural practices in unspoiled, idyllic surroundings. “We lived beneath the canopy of the trees and when the sunlight hit the ground, it was like a spotlight and we moved with it”, resulting in work as a translation of their relationship with each other as much as their surroundings. Surls, when asked about which artist has influenced him most, replies “Charmaine Locke”, their individual sources and sensibilities blend in psychological pools, language, conversation, life. “We swim in the same states”, he states. The Splendora home and studio grew with time, love, friends, family and collectors. Events were held at the location, eventually becoming a beating heart for art exhibitions and music, despite having no air conditioning and being at the end of a long back road, the nexus was hugely loved and cherished by all who visited.

Feeling very much at one with the universe, Surls feels that he has been “conjuring from a psychological place where human beings have been conjuring from for thousands of years”, we are all part of something much bigger. Composing with wood, which he shapes by hand using an ax and blades, Surls also works with bronze, stone and stainless steel. During the Splendora years, he used whatever the forest provided. The work begins with drawings, they are manifestations of personal feelings, connections and universal communications. These drawings have been featured alongside his sculptures in countless exhibitions and books. We are incredibly fortunate to have several of Surls’ magnificent pieces of public art in the Houston area. “Tree and Three Flowers” is situated at the junction of Kirby and Westheimer, a bronze and stainless-steel amalgamation of plant forms, leaves and thorns, is 38 ft tall and weighs just under 7000 lbs. Created by Surls in his Colorado studio, it was then driven all the way to Houston. The sculpture depicts morning glory and cactus flowers as well as tree branches, aspirational and symbolic, and native to Texas. In many of his sculptures, there is an exploration of the human psyche, the flower depicting the softer side of our nature, the cactus, the pricklier side. Being thrown off a horse when he was 14, and landing in a thorn bush, has augmented the fact that you may have a beautiful life but at times it will be difficult, regardless. Other recurring symbols include the needle and thread, the thread connecting and binding everything together, bowls, knives, swords, vessels, representations of comfort, female and male, boats symbolize bridges to other places, the mystery of the universe. Eyes look to the past and the future, the house represents security. Locally, the sculpture, “Nature’s Language” is positioned in the foyer of The Woodlands Towers, additional public pieces in the Houston area include

A recent project involved creating a sculpture from a fallen limb of a prominent oak tree in the LBJ Ranch House, the home of President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife Ladybird. Throughout the years the tree has provided shelter for animals and community, political gatherings, meetings with world leaders, cabinet members and dignitaries, where treaties were signed and peace was made, together beneath the shade tree. “History Walk”, was recently auctioned, the buyer being obligated to place the work in the publicly accessible library, to be enjoyed by the community. In 2020 Surls was the recipient of the International Sculpture Center Lifetime achievement award in Contemporary Sculpture, an honor established to recognize individual sculptors who have made exemplary contributions to the field. “A gift from The Bower” is a celebration of James Surls octogenarian status and the 40th anniversary of Diverse Works, of which Surls has supported over the years. The exhibition will take place at the Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature (LSCAN) in Splendora and will showcase newly commissioned sculptures from multiple artists as well as Surls and Locke. In a natural outdoor exhibition space of small clearings in the piney woods, these sculptures will be in restorative surroundings, focusing on our relationships as humans with nature and land, reminding us that as far as the environment goes, we are all guests. Surls personal piece for the exhibition is a tree stump saved from Hurricane Alicia in 1983, originating from a big water oak tree that was pulled from the ground by the storm. Surls has

elevated the piece in order to expose the tangle of roots as well as what is left above. Tree stumps being symbolic of the first settlers, clearing forests to grow crops, digging up entire stumps from the ground, an act of survival and progress. Later, stumps were used as bollards. The sculpture represents an appreciation of the trees for their magnificence, providing shade as well as the wood for boats, houses, spears, a monumental number of positive things from a living, breathing organism, a growing lifeline enabling survival. “A Gift from The Bower” is described by Surls as “a dream come true”. Each sculpture being made in collaboration with musicians, writers and performers to create an all-around creative experience, co-curated by Jack Massing and Xandra Eden. Opening festivities include live performances, artist talks, and special tours that will take place on Earth Day Weekend, April 22-23, 2023, from 11am-7pm each day. Pelicans cruise in long, lazy rows above the surf line while the shrimp boats run with their nets stretched out like wings of their own. The Gulf Coast has a flare and flavor that is distinctive: a dash of salted air on a sun-kissed shoulder and a peppering of sand still on your feet. At the core of what sets this region of the Gulf apart is its food. Finding the best, the freshest, the most authentic is not unlike stumbling upon the treasures of pirate Jean Lafitte who also stalked these waters. Levi Goode, owner and chef at Goode Company’s new Fish Camp restaurant in The Woodlands, has many treasured memories fishing with his father at the family’s fish camp on the backside of Brazoria County’s Christmas Bay. Those memories are melded with a contemporary, sharable approach to create Fish Camp’s authentically rustic feel. “As a kid, we’d wade-fish in the morning and gig for flounder at night under the moon or by the light of a Coleman lantern,” Levi recalls. “Those fish would get cooked up immediately, really fresh, and that’s the basis for what we want to present now.” Fish camp offers a seasonal menu that rotates to feature the freshest catch, an oyster bar and a well-developed cocktail list. Because he believes not all shrimp are created equal, all of Goode Company’s seafood is locally sourced. With over 34-years in the seafood business, they still use the same shrimp and oyster supplier, according to Levi. “This guy went to high school at Brazosport with my dad. He’s in his 80’s but still doing it! We want to support our local fishermen; they’re salt-of-the-earth people. We want to keep this incredible resource that’s right here in our backyard healthy and sustainable.” Same as Levi Goode, Abbey Hebert, chef and owner of House of Roux, developed a passion for the cultural food of her childhood from her family. Until she was well past 100-years old, Abbey’s great-grandmother passed along a love for the traditional Arcadia Parish, Louisiana cooking to several generations. With her

own twist on those family recipes, Abbey and co-owner Cody Nicholson offer deeply authentic, down-home fare created daily in their scratch kitchen. Their original shrimp and chicken pot pies are wildly popular. Those who know show up early before they’re quickly sold out each day. “Cajun culture historically is poor, so they know how to make the smallest amount of ingredients into the most delicious meal, how the simplest ingredients used the right way can have the greatest impact,” Abbey said. “We stay true to our culture.” Since opening last July in the MoCo Food Hall in Conroe, House of Roux has drawn a fun-loving, relaxed crowd for the raw oyster bar serving the best selection from around the country, shucked while you watch; the weekly off-the-menu specials; and oyster happy hours. Those who live too far away can have gumbo, etouffee, boudin balls and gumbo pies shipped directly to their doors across the country.

Zachary Schilleci also understands that the most important ingredient in a Gulf Coast recipe is family. Because his father is a New Orleans native and many of his family are spread from here to Mississippi, understandably creole cooking flavored his childhood. Schilleci’s New Orleans Kitchen, located in the Market Street area of The Woodlands, perfectly reflects that. “It’s a New Orleans flare to Gulf Coast cooking based on our family’s recipes,” Zachary said. “Everything is made from scratch in our kitchen, no bases. We make roux the slow, old fashion way. That’s how we did it at home.” Schilleci’s is known for their consistency and quality. The intimate, French Quarter-styled dining room only seats 64 and reservations are always recommended. They boast one of the best wine lists around with nearly 500 labels, most of which are small productions from family-run wineries. “Our ability to serve an outstanding menu consistently comes down to our low staff turnover,” Zachary explained. “We have six or seven members of our staff who have been with us since nearly our first day twelve years ago. We are very much a family.” That deep sense of family, cured for generations in salt water and a unique spice blend found only along the Gulf Coast, creates a unique cuisine that draws us all home.

We’re not talking about Star Wars Day. We’re talking about May 4, 1964, the day the U.S. Congress designated bourbon as a distinctive product of the U.S.A. While the ‘bourbon law’ is not yet 60, distilling spirits — whiskey (including bourbon), vodka, rum, gin, and agave spirits — follows an age-old path. The distiller heats water and starches (usually grains), then adds yeast. During fermentation, yeast converts the carbohydrates to sugar and alcohol. Distillation then separates the water and alcohol. Some spirits are bottled at this stage; many are aged. Bourbon, by law, must be made in the U.S. from at least 51% corn and aged in new, flame-charred American Oak barrels. Before we move on, it’s time to dismiss the notion that only silver-haired, cigar-puffing gents drink bourbon. Drinking distilled spirits is on the rise with more women and younger people imbibing than ever. Native Houstonians Caleb and Crystal Butler, have in-depth knowledge of distilled spirits and the beverage industry. They enjoy exploring Texas’ beverage scene and sampled spirits in area tasting rooms just in time for May 4th, 5th — Cinco de Mayo, and 6th — the Kentucky Derby. Their recommendations begin in Houston. William Price Distilling Company, located on Wakefield Drive in Central Northwest Houston, specializes in rye whiskeys, aged

five to six years, and single malt whiskeys sourced from Balcones Distilling in Waco. “We enjoyed a flight including their mainstay Straight Rye 101 and the sherry-finished single malt,” Caleb said. From the spacious bar, you can view the colossal 1500-gallon copper still, which you’ll learn more about during a distillery tour. A food truck serves tasty edibles on weekends. Just 700 feet away from William Price Distilling Company, you’ll find Avonak Distillery. Work by local artists adds a pop of color to the clean, contemporary tasting room. It’s a perfect backdrop for sampling spirits crafted from locally sourced ingredients. “You won’t find punchy high-proof whiskeys here,” Caleb said. Their bourbon is “a tame 80 proof but drinks even lighter and would be a great introduction to anyone just looking to dip a toe into drinking their spirits neat.” The Post Oak Straight Bourbon is their slightly more complex, caramel-colored iteration thanks to aging longer in charred oak barrels. Avonak Distillery excels in its cocktails. Caleb noted, “We found the “Suffering Bastard” to be the standout of our visit as it allowed gin, their specialty, to shine.” Next stop: Kooper Family Whiskey, off Highway 290 in Ledbetter, Texas. Troy and Michelle Kooper opened the state’s first whiskey-blending house in 2015. They source whiskey from Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois,

and Indiana, age it, and either blend it or bottle it as a single-barrel whiskey. You’ll see barrels aging in the tasting room, which has a cozy cocktail bar feel. “We can vouch for both the Smoked Old Fashioned and Whiskey Sour as well as pours of their limited-edition distillery-only whiskeys,” Caleb said. “Rye drinkers will appreciate the blended Barrel Reserve Rye . . . a rye full of spice, fruit, and a hint of tobacco.” If you’re interested in sampling their single-barrel whiskeys or their bestselling Prodigal Son Straight Bourbon Whiskey, which is aged at least four years, head to Ledbetter, as they’re only available there. A short drive west on Highway 290 brings you to Giddings. The historic freight depot is home to Dime Box Distillery Tasting Room and a 3000-strong collection of vintage cocktail swizzle sticks. Friendly bartenders poured

Caleb and Crystal the distillery’s Sixth Street bourbons and ryes, named for Austin’s legendary live music scene. The family-owned distillery ages its award-winning Sixth Street bourbons for at least four years, according to owner Peter Leidel. A label on the spirit’s guitar-shaped bottle specifies the number of years it’s aged. “If you’re a little more adventurous, you’ll find barrel strength (higher proof) options aged for six to nine years,” Caleb said, “and a selection of sotol, a close cousin of tequila and mezcal.” Closer to home, Bartletts Distillery in Conroe is Montgomery County’s only distillery. The entire process from fermentation to bottling is done locally. Owner and distiller Van Brackin serves malted whiskey, rum, and agave spirits in his Cheers-like tasting room. Head there for Cinco de Mayo. Van said, “we’re making the best margaritas in town!” Back in Houston, Poison Girl and Eight Row Flint round out Caleb and Crystal’s list. They highly recommend visiting Whitmeyer’s Distillery Tasting Room when it reopens. In the meantime, May the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth be with you.

Conroe: Music Lives Here! TEXAS MUSIC FRIENDLY CITY WELCOMES THE 2ND ANNUAL CONROE CROSSROADS FESTIVAL - APRIL 13-16, 2023

Music is in the air bringing renewed life to the streets of Conroe, Texas. It is a movement that started over 25 years ago with a group of passionate volunteers and music enthusiasts who worked to bring vibrance back to a sleepy town, one performance at a time. Festivals, concerts, and live music venues were born into what would become a distinct music destination with an undeniable sound. In December 2018, the City of Conroe received the official designation as a “Texas Music Friendly City” by Governor Abbott and the State of Texas, confirming the obvious to music lovers, songwriters, and musicians. In 2021, Texas Music Magazine and the City of Conroe partnered to sponsor The Conroe Crossroads Festival, a four-day festival offering a variety of musical genres, including Country, Blues, Southern Rock, Americana, and Jazz, at several music venues in Historic Downtown Conroe and the Lake Conroe area. With something for nearly every musical pallet, this year’s lineup of 40 live performances at 11 public and private venues ranging from parks and theaters to restaurants and lakefront locations is just around the corner. Performances will run from April 13-16, 2023.

Django Walker grew up in and around the Texas Music Scene. He is the son of Jerry Jeff Walker with a writing skill that has a southern rock/country writing style and a talent for storytelling.

Legendary Harp man and Blues award-winning songwriter Steve Krase has been nominated for Best Blues Band five times, including Best Instrumentalist twice and Best Blues Player. This musical genius has also represented Houston at the International Blues Conference in Memphis, finishing in the semi-finals.

FOLK FAMILY REVIVAL / UNCLE MASON’S FAMILY JAM

Hometown celebrated songwriters and musicians, Folk Family Revival cannot be categorized in any one genre of music unless “Pure Fun” could be a category. They are a bit of funk, southern rock, and boogie tied up in a cool, messy bow. Lead singer Mason Lankford also hosts Uncle Mason’s Family Jam to close out the festival, a crowd favorite!

TimLightyear is an accomplished singer, songwriter, musician, producer, and all-around musical genius. A song he co-wrote while a part of the hit group Shane Smith and the Saints, “All I See Is You,” aired on the hit TV Series Yellowstone Fall of 2021. His guitar chops will have you sitting on the edge of your seat for every riff!

Plan a swan ride on the Waterway and see maps online for routes, driving, and parking tips. When it’s time for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, happy hour, and nightlife, choose from a wide variety of sipping, dining, and dancing options. Our local restaurants and bars can’t be beat!

WHAT DO WE DO TODAY? Is it bright and sunny outside? Book a climb at Texas Treeventures Aerial Adventure Course (a thrill seeker’s dream), and hike and bike at George Mitchell Nature Preserve. Access is near The Recreation Center at Rob Fleming Park, which is hosting a Spring Home Landscape Gardening Class on April 15. The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival is in town on April 14 to 16. Join the crowds in cheering the Ironman Texas triathlon contestants on April 22 along the Waterway. The LPGA Chevron Championship is slated for April 19 to 23 at the Jack

Nicklaus Signature Course in Carlton Woods. Pickleball enthusiasts can watch a mixed doubles tournament on April 23 at Shadowbend Park Tennis Courts. Treat guests to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion outdoor amphitheater for a lineup of great concerts. Have a Guy’s Night in The Woodlands at Top Golf or spend a day golfing at The Woodlands Resort. Join The Woodlands Cars & Coffee for a Cause at Central Park, sponsored by The Woodlands Car Club, from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. every month.

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES

It’s always a delight to rest and refresh at the Woodlands Resort and Spa, the Spa at The Waterway inside The Woodlands Waterway Marriott. Get pampered at several spas on Market Street as well.

The carousel at The Woodlands Mall is always a hit, and Kiddos also love the splash pads at Market Street, Creekside Park, Town Center, Waterway Square, Grogan’s Mill, and Cochran’s Crossing. The Story Book Maze between Town Green Park and the Library is loads of fun, and The Woodlands Waterway and Lake Woodlands are strewn with art benches (try counting them all). At Play Street Museum, a miniature play city includes a Waterway Trolley, a bank, a school, and a doctor's office. At The Woodlands Children’s Museum, put out flames at the Fire House, build a castle, and attend Rhyme Time for babies and toddlers on the first and third Tuesdays this month. The Woodlands Methodist’s indoor Safari Stop playground is free to the public and a blast!
