LIFESTYLE LETTER
2023: The New Year Holds Excitement! This time of year is full of excitement! It presents us with new horizons and a reset for our own expectations, a new design for life. We approach this issue of The Woodlands City Lifestyle with the intention of offering you ideas that last and choices that will make a difference to you for the long term, as opposed to supplying quick fixes that merely check a box. In this issue, we're offering you inspiration for making lasting, realistic improvements to your physical, emotional and mental well-being. We start off our New Year with a look at The John Cooper School, whose students grace this month's cover. The students of today are the key to the future for all of us. I felt we should take a page from their book, so to speak, because John Cooper focuses on excellence across the board in academics, the arts, athletics, and more, providing opportunities to explore and grow that inspire and enrich the entire community. Whether it's business, finance, food, home or personal health, it's not what you do SOME days that moves the needle, it’s what you do MOST days. For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Eating a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and dessert every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. Like making it a habit to support local businesses or making the effort to say hello to a stranger who needs a smile. So plan the vacation, and work to establish more rest in your week. Create your own exercise program, or join a gym so that you can enjoy that chocolate malt cake next time you're at Truluck’s. It's not what you do every so often when you happen to remember, it’s what you do consistently that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling and awesome 2023!

THE ONCE AND FUTURE SCHOOL
CAN A SCHOOL MEET THE CHALLENGE OF ANTICIPATING TOMORROW?
THE BOX: The cardboard box that Jessica Holloway found tucked away on a closet shelf in her office seemed ordinary at first glance. It was the spring of 2022, and Holloway was settling in as the new director of marketing and communications for The John Cooper School in The Woodlands. Inside the box were file folders and scrapbooks, says Holloway. It turned out to be a historical archive of sorts—a copy of the school’s very first crest, original brochures, copies of school announcements from the early years. Among memorabilia neatly taped to the old manilla scrapbook pages were photos of the undeveloped land dedicated for the school by The Woodlands founder George Mitchell and newspaper clippings from the school’s opening in 1988.

The finding of such a collection of articles and artifacts was serendipitous, as Cooper’s new Head of School, Dr. Stephen Popp, was in the process of initiating a new strategic planning project for the future of the school. It was a treasure trove, says Holloway, “a joyful discovery that was fascinating to us as a team.” What became clear to Popp was that “since its founding, The John Cooper School was sure of its goals, clear in its purpose, and always keeping an eye toward the future.”
SETTING SAIL: A school may have lofty goals in mind at its inception. Like a ship setting off on its maiden voyage, great forethought and expertise have gone into its design, making it sturdy yet agile, able to weather the unexpected, pushing

the known horizon. The question is whether over the course of time it will continue to meet the challenge, leading the way with the same exuberance that marked the day it first set sail. How to create an educational experience that is impactful and relevant, that meets the challenge of the rapidly evolving digital age, is the big question facing educational institutions nationwide. In a 2020 survey of educators conducted by “Education Week,” nearly a third voiced concerns about how to prepare students for the future of work. “How do we help our students navigate today’s world?” asks Dr. Stephen Popp, Head of School at John Cooper. “How do we ensure that when our students are out there collaborating with others, they know how to interact, to communicate effectively, to handle the give and take of sharing ideas and working with others to create something?” The answer, says Popp, goes back to the school’s founding.
A SCHOOL FOR THE FUTURE: The idea of an independent school in The Woodlands was not an afterthought, says Popp. “George Mitchell specifically designated 43 acres for a college preparatory school, and the land was set aside in the original planning of The Woodlands.” The John Cooper School opened its doors 34 years ago with an enrollment of 174 students, grades K through 4, adding a grade every year after that. Its first graduating class was in 1994, says Popp, and the title of the yearbook that year was “Built to Last.” “The early school was a school of the future,” crafted with care by the initial board members, administration, and faculty to emphasize inquisitiveness, says Popp. It was a unique value proposition with a focus on excellence across the board—academically, in the arts, in athletics, and more—educating the whole student, and drawing people to The Woodlands to live and work. Since then, John Cooper has grown to nearly 1,300 students representing around 40 countries, a diversity of families and experiences that stimulates the intellectual and creative environment at the school, says Popp. The campus continues to evolve to meet the needs of its students. The Rock Math + Science Center includes a 125-seat lecture hall, a rooftop garden, and computer and robotics labs. The Glenn Performing Arts Center houses a 500-seat main stage and a 125-seat practice stage. The school’s technology department

includes a digital design program and an online media program with a professional-level podcast studio. The school has three visual arts studios and an art barn, with new arts and athletics facilities on the horizon. “Anytime we develop buildings or decide to add students, it always goes back to the foundation of our mission,” says Yvette Aquino, a John Cooper board member for 23 years, including 6 as board chair, whose 4 children graduated from the school. “What has transpired over the decades is a lovely campus and a school of distinction.” The school’s whole child philosophy gives students the gravitas to thrive in the world, says Popp, “an intellectual agility imbued with a sense of care.” John Cooper is one of six mentor schools in the country chosen by Yale University to implement a science-based program to enhance social and emotional intelligence, teaching students relational skills that are valuable at school, at home, and in their future workplace. Anticipating tomorrow is an ongoing challenge, and the updated strategic plan that is currently being crafted will become the school's new North Star, says Popp. “We are guided by a mission that we feel is relevant and resonant, both today and for the future. There will come different landscapes—industry, technology, communications.” He says John Cooper students will be ready.

Wellness Tips FOR 2023
There’s never been a better time to feel healthy and happy, especially heading into a new year. According to three local providers, we maintain our overall well-being by addressing the root causes of illnesses. When traditional approaches fall short, individualized, life-changing healing can be achieved through novel approaches to healthcare.
START THE NEW YEAR WITH HEALTHCARE INSPIRATION FROM THE EXPERTS
Dr. Tiffany Kristensen ACUPUNCTURIST, HERBALIST, AND TR ADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM) PR ACTITIONER “When an illness, disease, or symptom arises, ask yourself, ‘What is my body trying to tell me?’” says Dr. Tiffany Kristensen of Vibe Acupuncture and Holistic Healing Center. She specializes in integrative medicine and has served at Houston Methodist Hospital as the lead acupuncturist. Mind, body, soul, and science merge to help her patients achieve optimum health. They often see her as a last resort or last option, and her personalized protocols are usually the only things that work. Her holistic, individualized approach utilizes acupuncture, herbs, and stress regulation and might integrate other healing modalities, such as cupping and electric stimulation. Dr. Kristensen customizes herbal medicines (adaptogens) that have antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antihypertensive, and cardiotonic qualities. Combined with acupuncture, an immune response is stimulated, and the body is able to balance itself.

Dr. Tiffany Kristensen's acupencture and herbal treatments help patients throughout The Woodlands and beyond.
Health issues such as anxiety, asthma, sinus infections, headaches, back pain, and infertility — especially in severe cases — correlate with strong emotional charges. Dr. Kristensen gets to the underlying causes by working with patients and identifying psychological aspects that lead to disease. “Regulating the stress response puts the body in a different state,” she says. “I also offer pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) Therapy and Red Light Therapy (RLT) and teach classes about thought patterns, breathing exercises, and visualization techniques for long-term health.” Learn more at facebook.com/acupuncturewellnessinstitute.

Erin Thole CERTIFIED NATUR AL HE ALTHCARE PR ACTITIONER (CNHP) "Only a deep dive into the body’s chemistry can determine illnesses and address a client’s unique health concerns," says Erin Thole, a functional medicine practitioner. She focuses on whole health wellness and nutrition and works extensively in the realms of autoimmune, inflammatory, digestive, hormonal, cancer, children’s health concerns, and other disorders. “I've been in practice for fifteen years with a mission of helping clients take back control of their health,” she says. “Functional medicine practitioners are involved in a lot of sleuthing and searching to determine the ‘why.’ If someone has colitis, I want to know what’s going on in the colon.” Thole has utilized distance appointments for nine years, well before COVID made telehealth consultations commonplace. Her distance practice serves clients nationwide. “There is no one-size-fits-all program. I work with each client’s unique biochemistry to determine what dietary, supplementation, and lifestyle changes are best suited,” she explains. “They experience such relief after other treatments simply didn’t work.” Health panels are key in identifying issues and determining what treatments and pharmaceutical-grade supplements are needed. Food sensitivity, hormonal, micronutrient, microbiome, and essential fatty acids panels, as well as an EnviroTOX panel, are available. After a phone consultation, kits are mailed to clients’ homes and then sent to specialty labs to ensure accuracy and help determine a wellness plan. Learn more at erinthole.com. The Happiest Smile A MISSION TRIP TO HONDURAS CHANGES LIVES OF PATIENTS AND A LOCAL DENTIST

HOW DID YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH MISSION LAZARUS COME ABOUT? One of the doctors from Heartland Dental, the parent network for our practice, has been traveling to Honduras with his dad for 20-plus years and needed more help. It was a great opportunity to reach out and volunteer my time and services. Every day we were up by 6 a.m., working 10-hour days. The work was intense. We did as much as we could to help as many people as possible.
WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST NEEDS OF PATIENTS THERE? The most immediate need was relieving dental pain. Treatments ranged from root canal therapy to extraction to really big fillings and crown buildups, which entailed rebuilding the entire tooth. The culture and expectations of patients there is very different from ours at home. When they come to a dental office, it means they can no longer take the pain. They’re emotionally down, because they expect the tooth to be pulled. It was great to give them the possibility of saving it.
A 12-year-old girl came in for treatment with a great deal of apprehension. Previously she had witnessed her parents and older siblings return from a dental office after having teeth removed, and she was trying to be brave about what might happen. We had the opportunity and the supplies to do a root canal and offer care that was not typically provided in her area. It took longer than normal, but we saved the tooth. It was her maxillary first molar, and with the proper care, she’ll get 10, 20, up to 50 years out of it. That’s a huge impact on her quality of life and the nutrition she can receive. Without that molar, she would lose 85 percent of her ability to chew on her right side. We also saw a woman in her thirties who had a lot of decay on six of her front teeth. They were dark in color and holes were beginning to form. If we removed the teeth, the challenges were going to be her ability to eat and how the loss would affect her confidence in smiling. So instead of removal, we were able to get
everything cleaned out nicely, and we provided dental bondings. It was a full-smile makeover! She now essentially has 6 beautiful veneers.
HOW HAS THE TRIP AFFECTED YOU PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY NOW THAT YOU’RE BACK HOME? My colleagues and I are now planning to make the trip twice a year, eventually traveling there four times a year. Working with different doctors who didn’t really know each other before, teaming up to use our skill set to help people who otherwise might not receive this level of care. It’s very rewarding! I love teaching and mentoring other dentists and helping patients. I know I’m making an impact. Whether it’s a patient in Honduras, a patient here in The Woodlands, or someone flying in for care, I’m treating everyone as a family member and providing the best care I can to everyone.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK HERE IN THE WOODLANDS. Dr. Lee and I love taking care of our patients and teaching others. Our practice is very well-rounded, yet the work we do can be very specialized. I provide smile makeovers, and I do many full arch implants that enhance my patients’ self-esteem. It’s extremely rewarding to see the weight lifted off a patient’s shoulders when they can finally smile from the inside out. To me that’s something to celebrate!

THE BEAUTY OF ENHANCING CONFIDENCE ARTICLE BY JEAN CIAMPI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEX WOOD
“Real beauty comes from the inside, from feeling confident and happy,” said Dalasi Owusu from her NU-U Med Spa in The Woodlands. “That is my greatest goal: to help those who come through our doors find that confidence and feel beautiful.” It is a goal that is deeply personal for her. At age 17, Owusu arrived in Massachusetts from Liberia, Africa with her twin sister, her mother and two siblings. Finding herself in a dramatically different country and culture, she discovered the depth of her own inner strength, along with a determination and compassion that would set the course for her future. It would lead her into nursing school in Houston and to her husband, Dr. Anthony Owusu. His Next Generation Orthopedic and Spine Institute is next door. Shortly after her first baby was born, she established Dalasi’s House home healthcare services with offices in Houston and San Antonio to offer support and care for those dealing with health challenges. Then, in 2020, with a set of one-year-old twins added to
her family, she opened the doors of NU-U Med Spa in The Woodlands. Six months later, work began on a sister spa in Ghana, Africa. “Health and wellness are universally important, no matter where in the world you are. We all want to age gracefully,” Owusu said. “The key to building a strong program in order to accomplish that is education. Our team works to understand our client’s goals, to assess the best options to meet their expectations and to educate them on every aspect of the process. Everyone is unique and should be treated uniquely. What may be a great product for your friend, may not be the best choice for you.” From simple facials to minimally invasive polydioxanone (PDO) threading procedures that contour, lift and tighten, Owusu believes everyone can strive to put their very best face forward. Both men and women find benefits from injections of plasma-rich platelets (PRP) for hair growth enhancement and skin rejuvenation as well as Botox and fillers. world, attention to the details of appearance is not just for women, she points out. With the eye of an artist, Owusu quickly sees how small or more dramatic changes can perfect a face or body. Certified for administering injections, she can craft an effective defense in the war on aging with solutions to counteract weakening muscles, decreased fat pads and the impact of gravity. Whether it’s weight loss or recontouring; IV drips to enhance immunity, libido or energy; or naturally inducing collagen production, Owusu and her staff are on the front edge of the industry. “Lips are a big focus right now, and we’re seeing new, artistic ways to utilize lip fillers,” she said. “We’re also wanting sharper, more defined jaw lines, and fox eyes are the current trend in beauty, the lifted, elongated look of the eyelid.” A consultation through the NU-U Med Spa can determine the steps for achieving these aesthetics. She points out that the goal is not to change how you look, but to enhance it, to optimize it. “It’s important to believe in yourself enough to invest in yourself, in all aspects of your life.” With plans to expand into more locations in Texas and Africa, Dalasi Owusu sees the NU U Med Spa as a vehicle for her clients to do just that and as a way to invest in her own dreams of helping others realize their best selves, herself included.
NU-U Med Spa offers an extensive skin care product line including supplements and serums.

A LOOK INSIDE THE COLORFUL WORLD OF CAMI BOYETT
I NSP IR E D BY | A RTS + CULTURE
On the cold drizzly day I visited artist Cami Boyett in her studio, stepping over the threshold was akin to arriving in wonderland, to an enchanted snuggery, or perhaps even over the rainbow. Engulfed in the colorful charisma of her studio, Cami’s lively paintings preside in this orderly space, which is brimming with upcycled antiques, deer antlers, books, painted soft furnishings, chandeliers, and shelves stacked with inspiration in every nook. Cami’s paintings express the same kind of exuberance and convivial excitement that her workspace does, so it’s not surprising to hear that her inspiration includes the idyllic garden which surrounds her studio. A restful country oasis, with beehives and magnolia trees, where upcycled planters spill with color during the warmer months. Refusing to be pigeonholed into a specific artist genre, Cami’s artworks span from completely abstract, to more representational pieces, as well as 3D works, where she upcycles
antique bone China flowers, alongside deer antlers, and other rescued treasures to create one-of-a-kind, assemblage works. Not limiting herself to one media, Cami creates her paintings using acrylics, oils, pencils, colored markers and collage elements. A painting begins with washing color onto canvas, allowing it to drip and dribble to make its own shapes. Later, the design is introduced, a profusion of color, texture and energy, sometimes handmade paper is added to the mix before the final detailing work, outlining with a fine point brush, highlighting lines and shapes. All the time retaining remnants of the original background, adding balance, creativity and design to its spontaneity. Working with her unique style, color palette, and artistic flair gives an individuality to Cami’s work which is instantly recognizable, pulling together all her collected elements and makes for a cohesive journey through painting, upcycling, 2D and 3D. This inspiration is the result of a compelling childhood and cherished memories including visits to her grandmother’s home, a house filled with antiques, art and treasures. Inspiration also came from an upbringing filled with travel to Madrid, California, Texas and most memorably, Acapulco. Living there in the late 1960’s, Cami became influenced by the flower power scene and the designs and textures it presented. Her father worked for Disney and Cami became inspired with the graphic illustrations of Mary Blair, which were motivation enough to begin art classes upon her return to Houston in the 1970’s. Studying illustration and oil painting eventually led to a career in advertising in the early 1980’s. Later starting a family and subsequently relocating from Houston to Magnolia in 1996 she established her graphic design company “Boyett Design”. Continuing to paint from the family home the need for studio space became crucial,

so she and her husband built her “art cottage” for this purpose. In addition to her painting, Cami still runs “Boyett Design” today with a commercial client base which includes those in The Woodlands area. A recent collaboration with Birkenstock has resulted in a limited-edition collection of sandals featuring 2 of her favorite paintings, “Jubilee” and “In Living Color”. Each pair of sandals is completely different as the pelt is printed with the full painting, the pattern pieces are cut from this, so there are no repeats. These sandals are available via http://www.mgsandalfactory.com, but you need to be quick, as this is a limited run of only thirty pairs per design and almost half have already gone! Current work includes an homage piece inspired by Grant Woods infamous painting “American Gothic”, Cami introduces her own personality to this classic using her colorful palette and signature style. This painting is the first in a new series acknowledging famous classics which are inspirational pieces and personal favorites. We are very excited to follow the continuation of this wonderful creative art journey, and see more of Cami’s beautiful bright work in the future! camiboyettstudio.com instagram.com/cami_boyett_studio

ARTFULLY SIT UATED
ARTICLE BY ANNETTE PALMER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOAN TILTON
In a society where life is fast and we are constantly on the go, The Woodlands Arts Council encourages us to stop, think and take a moment. Quite an accomplishment, and one which is deeply seated in our community and growing steadily, a few benches at a time. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a treasure in our midst. “The project began in 2014, after the success of The Waterway Arts Festival. The underwriting for the benches benefits the year-round education and outreach programs of The Woodlands Arts Council," said Jenny Wright, executive director of The Woodlands Arts Council. With the recent addition of 6 new benches, the collection now sits at 30 unique sculptural pieces. “Public art is a key part of The Woodlands DNA as it courses through our community like a mycelium network exuding vibrant healing energy," states Nickole Bobley, founder of Artfeel which was inspired by the Art Benches. Artists from near and far are featured in the collection, the benches exude fun, discovery, memory, education, reflective waterside pieces, sound sculptures, interactive works, and are a wonderful tribute to our society, appealing to all age groups and walks of life. Follow our beautiful map and make it a family venture. Rather it is a bike ride, run, or a slow long walk. There is always a bench around the corner in the heart of The Woodlands to wake up your sense of wonder. Which is your favorite? thewoodlandsartscouncil.org

The Woodlands is filled with diverse people from various walks of life, and fortunately, the opportunities to volunteer are just as diverse. For every cause near and dear to our hearts, there’s a place to give back. Why Volunteer? Volunteering is a labor of love that is absolutely vital to the day-to-day operations of nonprofits, bringing monumental blessings to the community. There is nothing quite like the satisfaction of supporting those in need, and giving back can also yield rewards on an interpersonal and career level. According to Shelly Mark of the Junior League of The Woodlands, donating our time and energy changes our lives as well as the lives of others. “Volunteering enables us to build friendships with people who are united around a common cause,” she says. “We develop and enhance skillsets that help in our professional lives and personal missions.” Throughout her life, Shelly moved a lot. “Family and community were where you were in the moment,” she says. Settling in The Woodlands ten years ago brought a sense of connection, and

Shelly became involved with passionate people who were energized by making a difference. Today, she is chairing one of the most vital outreaches held each January — the Little Black Dress Initiative. An Awareness Event. How do you create an annual event that highlights issues affecting others for a lifetime? From January 23–27, The Little Black Dress social media campaign will highlight Junior League-driven initiatives, especially those that address poverty and its effect on women and children in our local communities. Sharing social media posts and wearing a little black dress or a Little Black Dress t-shirt will help spread awareness and raise funds. Past years’ efforts raised over $55,000 for the 13.1% of women and children in our area who live in poverty. Be Involved! Consider joining Junior League during its membership drive this coming spring or other amazing nonprofits throughout Montgomery County. Learn more at jlthewoodlands.org.

C O C K TA I L C U LT U R E Is Drinking a Social Obligation?
Our social lives often involve happy hour, dinner cocktails, and beer while watching our favorite sports. The problem is that we might feel obligated to drink. Author Adam Lamb shares why alcohol, the “cornerstone of the modern American social life,” can actually hold us back when it comes to family, career, fitness, and health goals. Lamb’s emancipating message is shared in his book Better Than the Binge: Overcoming the Social Obligation of Alcohol. His intention is not to preach but simply explain how and why he developed new habits and a new life. “I wasn’t an alcoholic or out of control,” he states. “I quit because I assessed my life and wanted to improve all aspects by removing things that didn’t serve me. Alcohol was at the top of the list.” Social drinking is something we celebrate from the age of 21, and binging during gatherings is not uncommon. Alcohol loosens inhibitions, but if we can’t have a good time without being inebriated, we have to wonder why. Lamb examined his reasons for drinking and decided it didn’t align with what he wanted for his future.
At first, he felt like a social outlier and noticed that others felt uncomfortable when he ordered iced tea instead of a mixed drink. It led to conversations about working out in the early morning without feeling foggy, a more authentic connection with his wife and children, and a better focus on his skyrocketing businesses. There were no downsides to Lamb’s new lifestyle, only positives. Now, in addition to running his businesses, Lamb is a high-performance coach for Christian men who want to leave behind habits that hold them back and make room for what moves them forward. “When people realize that zero alcohol consumption eliminates the risk of missing an opportunity, saying something unfortunate, behaving inappropriately, or facing a DUI, most people aren’t inclined to drink as much,” he says. He wrote his book to encourage thought processes about self-improvement and exercising free will while living life to the healthiest and fullest. You can find Better Than the Binge: Overcoming the Social Obligation of Alcohol on Amazon and at betterthanthebinge.com.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS
Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.
BRUNCH AFTER BARRE Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SATUR DAY Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.
Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!
