YES to YOUTH - Open House for Renovated BridgeWay Home YES to YOUTH - Montgomery County Youth Services celebrated the opening of the renovated BridgeWay Home and the completion of two new cottages, and an activities center. Kids aged 10-17, come to BridgeWay through Child Protective Services. With two new cottages, YES to YOUTH has doubled the capacity of youth in need. The Woodlands Arts Council Reveals Five New Art Bike Racks The Woodlands Arts Council (TWAC) revealed five new Art Bike Racks. This brought the total number of public art benches and bike racks in The Woodlands to 36. The Woodlands Art Benches and Art Bike Racks can be found from The Woodlands Mall to The Woodlands Waterway, Town Green Park, and Hughes Landing on Lake Woodlands. TexaCali Friendship Fruit Cake A HOLIDAY FAVORITE OF DR. SHELLEY SEKULA-GIBBS

When I was a 1st year medical student at UTMB, a nursing student from California, who was married to one of my anatomy dissection partners, shared this recipe with me. I have modified the recipe to make it less calorie rich and baked this fruit cake frequently ever since. Blessings, Dr. Shelley

ingredients: • 1 c. light margarine • 1 1/2 c. sugar • 6 eggs • 1 tbsp. vanilla • Grated peel of large orange • 2 1/2 c. unsifted flour • 1 tsp. baking powder • 3 c. chopped prunes • 3 c. chopped apricots • 3 c. yellow raisins • 3 c. chopped pecans • 3 c. dried apples or figs • Rum

Cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in vanilla, orange peel, flour and baking powder. Beat well. Fold in fruit. Grease three 9x5x3 loaf pans and line with aluminum foil. Grease again. Pour mixture into pans. Cover pans with greased foil. Bake at 275 for 1 1/2 hours. Remove foil and turn temperature to 300 degrees and bake 40 to 60 minutes longer. Cool in pans. Remove from pan and cool top side up on a rack. Wrap cakes in cheese cloth, soak in rum then wrap in aluminum foil. Store in a cool dry place.

Year round, countless residents of The Woodlands and Montgomery County leave the forest to enjoy making a day of it in the rainforest, communing with the butterflies. “In 1991, the Cockrell Foundation and several other major benefactors came together to raise the funds needed for the construction of the Cockrell Butterfly Center. Completed and open to the public on July 1, 1994, the Cockrell Butterfly Center helped position The Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) as one of the premiere science museums in the nation. Visitation to the facility exceeded all expectations and launched the Museum into a new era of service to the Houston community.” The Houston Museum of Natural Science’s CEO Joel Bartsch finds that giving is very strong. “We’ve been fortunate to have extremely engaged and generous patrons who care deeply about our institution and who are committed to seeing it thrive,” Bartsch says. “This spirit of philanthropy spans several decades and continues into the current day, and we remain humbled and grateful for this sustained support.” He oversees the magnificent Cockrell Butterfly Center, a mecca for nature lovers and people from 1 to 91. Nonagenarian Lee Roy Smith, Jr. toured the center last week and said, “I think they must have just received new shipments of butterflies – I’ve never seen so many. I was also impressed with the variety of blooming plant life with some exquisite colors.” CONTINUED >

COCKRELL BUTTERFLY CENTER HISTORICAL FACTS: • Since it opened in 1994, one of the main goals of the Cockrell Butterfly Center has been to promote butterfly watching, pollinator gardening and insect and other arthropod conservation. Educational programs such as Bugs on Wheels, which takes live insects into area schools, encourage the understanding and respect for insects and their habitats. • Recently, after 6 months of renovations, the Center reopened its doors on March 10, 2023. Our “metamorphosis” focused on the rainforest conservatory and included replacing all 535 panes of glass, widening and resurfacing the pathways, and upgrading the lighting. Most patrons cannot tell the difference, but the butterflies and plants sure can! The new windows let in additional light, allowing our flora and fauna to flourish in the upgraded exhibit. The new pathways and additional benches also increased accessibility in the exhibit, making it more enjoyable for everyone. • During our reopening, a new program named “Flight School” was introduced. Patrons have the opportunity to take on the role of “flight trainers” as they release a live butterfly into the conservatory, taking its maiden flight. This experience is available daily on a first come, first served basis. • At any time, visitors can see around 1,500-2,000 exotic butterflies from 60-70 species in the exhibit. • Our visitors can even watch them emerging from their chrysalises! • HMNS also has an insect zoo that is attached to the Center that is included in admission. • The rainforest exhibit where the butterflies are flying is also home to thousands of living tropical plants.

Atelier Haus was born out of the desire to have a haven where my creativity could flourish. From the moment the studio’s doors opened, it became a space where my ideas could be explored, designs could come to life, and imagination could roam free. The joy of witnessing my client’s satisfaction and the positive impact my creations have on their lives has been the ultimate reward for all the hard work we have put in this year. What truly sets Atelier Haus Interiors apart is my unwavering love for what I do. The ability to follow my passion, and to pour my heart into every project is undoubtedly the greatest victory of all.

In the last few years, I have definitely simplified my Christmas decor at home. I have a beautiful collection of hand-painted glass ornaments that I collected over the span of 15 years. I loved to get them out every year but then I had 2 boys. I haven’t seen my ornaments in 6 years and probably won’t until the boys are off to college. To make life simpler, I began adding assorted photo frames to my tree with pictures of memories from past Christmas’s. The holiday season for me has become more about the moments and memories and I love reflecting that on my tree.

I recently met with 4 authors in The Woodlands area to learn about their stories, and their books! Despite all having full time businesses and ventures, they write in the stolen moments before a family awakens, on vacation, in the backyard, and late at night when the house is asleep. Entwining the story and the words, until it is just right for the telling.

WHERE AND WHEN DO YOU WRITE? I write late at night or early in the day when the world is quiet. I would write when my daughters, Sophie and Veronica, were asleep, then we would discuss my stories together when they were awake.

WHY DO YOU WRITE? I enjoy the art of the story, and writing something that will be passed down and enjoyed through future family generations.

COULD YOU TELL ME ABOUT SOME OF THE CHARACTERS IN THE BOOK? The narrator is called “Yorguide”, and there are lots of mythical creatures including dragons and fairies. Many of the names relate to people and their alter egos. The fun names and personalities were partly created and imagined by my daughters. A creature my daughter made in an art class at school became a character in the book!

Marketing and technology business owner of Nieto Marketing, Melea Nieto has written over twelve books and has another two scheduled to be published in 2024. However, her latest book “The Lonely Little Fart”, is her debut children’s book and is a story about friendship. Her writing is inspired by her children, and her mother, Betsy, who inspired her to believe in herself. Now planning another children’s book, Melea writes because she feels that stories create great memories and says that “It's super fulfilling for me to deliver joy in this way!”

Finally, he finds just the right fit in a little boy who is equally smelly, dirty, and “talks” funny when no one is looking.

WHY DO YOU WRITE? I write because my stories have brought fun, levity, and good memories for my children and their peers.

At Christmastime, the trees we trim in our homes are the center of our festivities, we gather around them to celebrate the season, open gifts, reminisce, and spend special time with friends and family. I find that holiday decorating can be a time of reflection, a childhood memory of my gran magically sprinkling glitter over her miniature tree, the shiny tinsel, and fiber optic trees of my youth, and those which I decorated with my own children, lifting them up high to reach the top branches, and let’s not forget the pets that slept below them, climbed them, or knocked them over when no-one was home! My ornaments are stored in boxes, they are in the attic for 11 months of the year and are annually rediscovered on the 12th month. The memories within these boxes are precious, they’re the warm fuzzy ones you can feel with your heart. They’re made from tatty paper lace, long faded crayons on construction paper, and festive motifs roughly cut from felt. They’re from far-off places, times and people remembered, they’re a treasure trove to hold dear and cherish for the short duration of the holiday season. I have many favorite baubles, so I spoke to 4 art loving residents of The Woodlands, to ask about theirs! The first ornament to garnish Susan Vreeland-Wendt’s tree this year is one which is very dear to her. A silver and blue glass bauble painted in the Ukrainian Petrykivka folk style, with the word “myr” painted on one side. This was a gift from her husband’s children during the height of the conflict in Ukraine, Susan was haunted by the images and reports continually broadcast across the media. “Myr” is

the Ukranian word for peace and proceeds from the sales of the ornament go towards rebuilding Ukraine. Susan, who is an advisory board member for The Woodlands Arts Council told me, “This is the most thoughtful gift ever, for me, the bauble is a symbol of peace”. As well as founding The Woodlands Art Gallery and Studios, gallerist Emily Startz has a passion for cats, “they put a smile on my face” she tells me, “At one point I owned six!” She enjoys painting and has recently illustrated a small cat portrait, namely “Starlight. It’s mounted in a sweet little antique frame which Emily found in a box of her mother’s effects after she passed away, “she loved garage sales and this was probably one of her many finds”, says Emily, the piece evokes memories of her mother as well as her past cats. Original art, handmade gifts and stocking stuffers are available in the “unique boutique”, display in her gallery on 208 Nursery Road, 77380. The Woodlands Gallery and Studios celebrates its second anniversary on December 2nd. Jenny Carattini-Wright has an ornament so special that it’s on display in her home year-round. Jenny is the Executive Director of The Woodlands Arts Council and fell in love with the clay ornament whilst visiting Puerto Rico a few years ago. It’s a one-of-a-kind sculptural piece depicting the three kings, made by artist Aurea Marcano. The lustrous teal reflective glaze of the figures in relief is striking against the matte, terracotta of the background. It’s a fragile piece but stands alone on a small easel. The Christmas tree is not taken down until after the holy epiphany, also known as “Three Kings Day” on January 6th. The ornament makes Jenny appreciate special times with her family as well as being a “reminder of faith”. Our Editor of The Woodlands City Lifestyle Magazine, Jo Hammon, has a Christmas tree filled with cherished treasures, included are these ceramic memories, honoring her pets lost and remembered over the years “I had the ceramic scalloped circles created years ago when I first met my husband. The animals were not memories yet and the ornaments were

They’re from far off places, times and people remembered, they’re a treasure trove to hold dear and cherish. treasured keepsakes hanging each year on our tree. When our beloved pets passed on, the decorations became even more meaningful to us. When we had children, we were able to tell the stories of Lacy, the cat, Hershey, his dog, Annie, our bunny and Luke the golden retriever who loved the snow. It was a way for us to share part of our hearts with our children who never got to meet these lovely 4-legged angels. They hang on our tree to this day!” These nostalgic trees are our personal stories so far, they are truly extraordinary and significant, and each year we lovingly add to them, a little bit more! Santas Robin, keeping watch!

One of my personal favorite tree ornaments is a little bird. It’s originally from my parent’s Christmas tree and now lives on in mine. This little British robin has always been known in this house as “Santa’s Robin”, since long before the elf on the shelf, it was Santa’s messenger, and would watch and report all good, and not so good deeds, back to Santa himself! This lovely little bird now sits quietly on a branch of the tree, no longer a tattle tale as the children are grown, but simply representing the festive season and all that it means.

Family has gathered, lights are twinkling, and cooler weather is creeping upon us! While holidays bring memories to last a lifetime, there can be moments of stress creating the perfect dinner. Fortunately, three of our favorite restaurants, Local Table, Butler House, and Fieldings, have graciously offered to disclose some of their holiday classics. I must warn you though, after reading these delicious holiday meals your mouth will be watering! First up for tasty meals is Local Table. Next on the list of divine eats is the Butler House off of Gosling, just North of 99. You might have already seen this striking white house with its large outdoor patio. Modeled after owner Bryan’s home in Butler, Pennsylvania, he and his wife, Marina, wanted to bring a cozy and intimate piece of home with them to Texas. If you’re looking for an atmosphere big on family and community, Butler House contains all that and more. On their menu, they have an entire page from the owners that explains the story of The Butler House and how it became a community favorite. Currently, they are offering items on their fall menu, and will soon offer items on their winter menu. Executive chef, Jairo Ramirez, is very particular that the winter menu only be released on the first day of winter. So, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for its release! While they do not promote specific Christmas packs, they do have the ability to cater and provide a Christmas dinner to order. If catering at home doesn’t sound like your ideal gathering, they also have a variety of spaces that can easily host all your Christmas gatherings.

Last but absolutely not least is Fieldings. Neither of the two Woodlands locations will disappoint with their perfectly crafted food, drinks, and intimate atmosphere. When you walk past someone on the street, you never know the impact they have on the community. Coming up on 25 years in the restaurant industry, Amber Scheer is one of those inspirational people who put so much of her heart and soul into the community. Starting as a host, Amber slowly worked her way up, and on the way to her current position, she discovered that hospitality was her true calling. “I love being around people and making relationships happen,” says Amber. She is not only excellent at making people feel welcome, but her heart for non-profit organizations is obvious! Amber has hosted golf tournaments, food drives, served on Interfaith Gala committees, and the list goes on! She is also heavily committed to her role in the non-profit program, Leadership Montgomery County which dedicates itself to shaping future leaders of the community. Two large non-profits in the area that Amber continuously works with are Interfaith of The Woodlands, one of the

biggest non-profits in The Woodlands, and YES to YOUTH. While she loves all of the non-profits she works with, YES to YOUTH is closest to her heart. Hopefully a last stop before a permanent home, YES to YOUTH works to provide a safe and nurturing space for children. As a mother herself, this non-profit greatly tugs at her heart. Once a month, Amber goes out with a team to cook for the children of YES to YOUTH. They also do dinners for holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving. One concept Amber made clear is that she could not do any of this without the help of her amazing team at Truluck’s. “We all love and care so much about The Woodlands and want it to be the best place to live always.” Amber is a loving wife and mom to her five-yearold daughter, Savannah. This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
