Stretching 24 miles along the coastline between Destin and Panama City Beach, Florida’s Scenic Highway 30A existed under the radar for most Texans until recent years. A breathtaking drive that offers views of rare coastal dune lakes, sugar-white sand beaches, and the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico, 30A is home to some of the most idyllic beach communites in the U.S., says Brenda Quiroga, a Luxury Property Specialist at Corcoran Ferester Realty (formerly Beth Ferester & Co.). Brenda discovered this special part of the Florida Panhandle many years ago while on vacation. Captivated by the striking beauty of the coastline and the relaxed, easy lifestyle, she pursued her real estate license in Florida and did what many in the business told her could not be done—she became a dually affiliated agent (a “double agent,” so to speak) licensed in Texas and Florida, with Corcoran Ferester here

in The Woodlands and with Florida’s Corcoran Reverie, where she works from their Seagrove Beach office on 30A. Now Brenda divides her time between Texas and Florida, helping second home buyers and investors in The Woodlands area find the homes of their dreams along 30A. She says 30A beach properties offer a better ROI than Texas beach properties because the area is a prime destination for visitors from neighboring states and across the country, making homes quite valuable as vacation rentals. Brenda is excited about sharing the “secrets” of 30A with beach lovers in The Woodlands area who want to know more. “I love helping Texans learn how to find their own special 30A property,” says Brenda--a place where they can kick off their boots and enjoy getting a little sand between their toes! “Each coastal village or town has its own personality,” says Brenda. White picket fences and Victorian-style architecture are typical in the picture-perfect town of Seaside, which served as the backdrop for the Jim Carrey film, “The Truman Show.” Alys Beach brings to mind a Mediterranean village on the coast of Greece. The quaint cottages of Rosemary Beach exude a quiet charm. Or, explore other communities, like Grayton, WaterColor and WaterSound Beach, each with its own special character.

RELAX ABOUT THE ITINERARY From golfing to kayaking, from live music to delicious culinary experiences , “There’s no boredom here, rain or shine,” says Brenda. The preferred mode of transportation is the golf cart, she says, used to zip to the beaches or to area parks. At Blue Mountain Beach, just south of Seaside, you can soak up the sun and sample the frozen treats from Blue Mountain Beach Creamery, a local favorite. Cool off indoors with a little shopping at some of the local galleries and boutiques, and at the nearby premium outlets. Enjoy the gourmet food trucks and vintage Airstreams that serve all kinds of mouthwatering delights (“You can be dripping wet and still experience an excellent meal,” says Brenda), or one of the many outstanding local restaurants that run the gamut of tastes. One of Brenda’s favorites is family-owned Old Florida Fish House, where her go-to dish is the grouper.

GETTING THERE Book a non-stop flight from Houston to either Destin or Panama City Beach. Or, pack the kids and the dog in the car and make it a family road trip. “Stop overnight in New Orleans or Biloxi. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to reach 30A’s beaches by lunchtime the next day!”

Cody Johnson

Country music fans in Montgomery County have supported Cody Johnson and Parker McCollum for years. After all, this is where their winding roads to fame began. Cody Johnson went to school just up the way in Groveton, where he learned to rodeo and play music. Parker McCollum graduated from The Woodlands College Park High School and played his guitar for locals long before heading out to Austin to pursue his musical career. Now they are both Country Music Television (CMT) award winners. Upon winning his first-ever CMT Award for Breakthrough Video of the Year, Parker McCollum said, “I try to write real country songs from the heart that mean something, and I appreciate it being recognized.” His fan favorite, “To Be Loved by You,” earned him the coveted trophy to announce his arrival on the national country music stage as well as earning him the prestigious title of "New Male Artist of the Year" by ACM . After pumping up the crowd on the streets of Nashville with a rousing live performance, Cody Johnson took to the CMT stage twice more to accept his awards. The first was in the DigitalFirst Performance of the Year category for his rendition of “Dear Rodeo” during the CMT Campfire Sessions. The second statue was for the prestigious Male Video of the Year. His first chart-topping Billboard single, “Til You Can’t,” scored him the second accolade. “I honestly didn’t expect this to be as big of a victory as it was until you really start thinking about it,” Johnson said after leaving the stage. CoJo, as Johnson is known, has two distinct fan bases, the ones who have been with him from the beginning

as an independent artist and the new fans he has gained since signing a record deal with Warner Music Nashville. “We have an opportunity right now to get all those fans together and to vote on one thing – they did tonight. I am so honored. I was very taken back.” McCollum and Johnson are both amid serious glow-ups. McCollum headlined a sold-out performance at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in October of 2021, setting a record for the most paid tickets for a country artist in The Pavilion’s 31-year history. It also marked a triumphant return to the stage he walked across to receive his high school diploma. A new announcement just revealed he’ll be back for an encore performance on Oct 22, 2022. Meanwhile, Johnson and Parker made history earlier this year by becoming part of the small prestigious group to sell out at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Not to mention, Cody, one of three musicians to sell out opening night. He is in the same company as Garth Brooks (2018) and George Strait (2017), the last hitmakers to kick off the legendary event to a sold-out crowd. “This means the brand of country music I’ve been working on for 15 years is starting to work,” says Johnson. Despite their recent successes, Johnson and McCollum are not stories of overnight success. Neither has forgotten that there is a whole lot of Texas dust on their boots from the roads that originate here and lead to the national stage they now command. Both of these wonderfully talented guys are actively touring. Get their tour dates at parkermccollum.com and codyjohnsonmusic.com.

Jamon Iberico de Bellota

Thomas Perez pours a crisp Spanish Albariño for a couple at the bar in his restaurant, Plane and Level. He’s describing his time in Prawn tortellini with jamon Iberico consomé

Spain, where he studied oenology. His favorite food and wine city in the world is San Sebastian in the Basque Country region. “It’s where I got this idea, this concept,” he explains.

Grilled Spanish octopus with sweet peppers, saffron, and patatas

Crab stuffed piquillo peppers with pimento aioli

Perez and partner Brian Culwell opened Plane and Level in 2020 in a cozy building on Midway in Old Town Spring. They’ve decked out the space in beautiful lights and shiny sheet metal, the kind used as the “skin” on vintage airplanes. “I’ve opened a few luxury hotels and restaurants,” says Thomas, whose resume includes stints at La Table in Houston, the luxury hill country ranch resort The Inn at Dos Brisas, and at L’Auberge in Carmel, California. “I didn’t want to do the same thing again. I wanted to do something unique. I wanted a statement, people taking pictures and posting.” He says he was brainstorming, throwing out ideas, when the notion of a vintage plane came into his mind. The concept came to include a bar top made from a vintage plane wing. The food at Plane and Level is a tribute to Thomas’s love of Spain and the wines he experienced there. He sources the restaurant’s impressive wine list from small family wineries in Spain as well as Italy, Slovenia and France. “Most wines that we acquire have never been to Texas or to the U.S. before. These are tiny wineries. Sometimes we’re buying their entire production.” True to the restaurants and tapas bars of Spain, a cluster of jamon Iberico de bellota legs dangle from the ceiling, and another one, ready for slicing, sits atop the bar behind a row of wine glasses, perfect for a pre-dinner nosh as guests ponder the menu. “My first passion was the kitchen, and then I got into wine,” says Thomas. “I’ve pursued wine for most of my adult life. It wasn’t until this opportunity that I came back to the kitchen.” Plane and Level has a loyal following who are attracted to the menu’s Spanish delicacies, Thomas’s astute wine pairings, and the precision of the preparation. “If you don’t wake up the next day thinking about what you ate here, I haven’t done my job.” On a recent evening, a number of the tables in the small restaurant were filled with guests who had driven from inside the Loop to get here, having previously bonded with Thomas during his time at La Table, he says. Other of his guests are patrons cultivated during the COVID-19 shut-down and the limited-seating months that were hard times for some restaurants. Thomas says he chose to view this time as an opportunity, setting up a wine-tasting table outside the restaurant and striking up conversations with passers-by, who were impressed by Thomas’s hospitality and the superb wines he was pouring. The evening we were there, Thomas pulled out all the shops, showing the depth and breadth of what Plane and Level has to offer. For an amuse bouche he presented guests with a silky asparagus velouté with Spanish pimiento. This was followed by plump PEI oysters on the half shell with a delicate mignonette, and then a softboiled egg custard, served in the shell and topped with a crown of osetra caviar. Galician-style octopus is a mainstay of Spanish cuisine, and Thomas’s pulpo dish with peppers, saffron and patatas was spot-on, as were his crispy croquetas de chorizo with house-made aioli. The albondigas–small pork and beef meatballs– with tomato, manchego and black truffle, were equally delicious and true to their origins. A luxurious duck breast with butternut squash, huckleberry gastrique, and seared Hudson Valley foie gras, offered a lovely layering of flavors and textures, the fresh squash purée providing a playful contrast to the mellow duck and crispy foie gras. “Most of our ingredients come from Spain,” says Thomas. “Our herbs and vegetables are grown locally. We have a local farmer five minutes away.” An outdoor patio seating area was recently expanded. Across the patio from the restaurant is a building that Thomas and Brian have turned into an event space for private parties, rehearsal dinners, and birthday parties. The restaurant is growing, along with its customer base. “I’ve been in the business all my life,” says Thomas. “It’s kind of rare to have what we have.” His mission is to make sure his guests at Plane and Level feel the same way. “If you don’t wake up the next day thinking about what you ate here, I haven’t done my job.”

Together at the new South Tower of Memorial Hermann Hospital - The Woodlands

Our conception of health and medicine has changed immensely over the last few decades. The demarcation between medical science and other aspects of our lives is much more fluid. New innovations seem to blossom every day and new horizons are now offering greater knowledge and hope than ever before. DR. GIRIDHAR VEDALA Giridhar Vedala, M.D., is a board-certified Noninvasive Cardiologist at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, treating patients ages 13 and up. He will soon broaden his care to include work inside the new South Tower that will be completed this summer. Part of Memorial Hermann’s $250.6 million major campus expansion, the South Tower is predominantly a cardiovascular space with designated cardiovascular beds, cardiac testing spaces and heart catheterization labs. “Cardiovascular treatment options have expanded significantly over the last 1 to 2 decades, and as these procedures have become more standardized and the benefits more clear, Memorial Hermann’s investment in space and resources to provide these opportunities to the local community is inspiring,” says Dr. Vedala.” Dr. Vedala was born in India and grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana. He attended Pennsylvania State University for undergraduate studies and earned his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his internal medicine residency and cardiovascular fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where he also served as a clinical faculty instructor. In 2001, Dr. Vedala joined a cardiovascular group practice in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 2014, to be near family,

34

he moved to The Woodlands, and in 2017, he joined Memorial Hermann Medical Group, Woodlands Cardiology. When not working, Dr. Vedala enjoys playing tennis, watching films, reading science fiction and spending time with his family. “There have been great advances in cardiovascular medicine prevention and treatment. Many national scientific organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and medical device companies have been able to bring to fruition significant preventative and treatment measures to prolong and improve quality of life for our cardiac patients,” says Dr. Vedala. “In the treatment arena, the most exciting and transformative changes have been the opportunity to provide more complete coronary artery revascularization with improved stents, implant devices to limit need for blood thinners in atrial fibrillation, and ability to provide valve replacement or valve repair technologies through percutaneous means as opposed to open surgical procedures. In the prevention arena, improved pharmacologic options for more aggressive management, early advanced cardiac imaging to identify plaques in heart blood vessels, and even monitoring pressures within the heart for patients with chronic heart failure to keep them out of the hospital, have significantly increased chances for our patients to enjoy healthier and longer lives.”

WILL HERNDON Will Herndon was only 6 years old when he was diagnosed with Juvenile Batten Disease, a rare and fatal neuro-degenerative brain syndrome caused by an autosomal recessive gene mutation. At the time, there was no treatment, no cure, and no research on the horizon. Surreal and unacceptable to his parents, Missy and Wayne, they created HOPE: The Will Herndon Research Fund to raise awareness and fund a cure. 13 years later, Missy and Wayne’s dream for their son, and children everywhere affected by Batten, is now a reality. In his 14th week, Will is now officially known as BBDF 101 Clinical Trial Participant #1 at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston and the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. “If this trial treatment works as we hope, it will slow the progression of Will’s disease,” explains Missy. “Potentially changing what is a devasting, terminal childhood disease into a chronic condition. For Will and our family, it means life.” Clinical trials for rare diseases are not made—they are forged—and in this case, in the blood, sweat and tears of a passionate fundraising family and the community rallying behind them. Since its inception, HOPE has raised nearly $9 million dollars (Yes, you read that correctly!), putting Batten on the medical help map and The Woodlands on the charitable giving map. Over the years, Will has lost his vision, has seizures, has suffered cognitive losses

and speech impairments, but like his parents…has never lost hope. Once the drug receives Federal Drug Administration (FDA) final approval, Will’s wish is that all children suffering from Juvenile Batten Disease will have access to it too. In the meantime, this fun-loving teenager dutifully takes his medicine 6 times a day, travels to a slew of medical appointments both near and far, attends The Woodlands High School, plays Challenger Baseball at ORWALL, horses around with his beloved brothers and cousins, paints and dreams of his future as a zookeeper.

RONALD DYKES Ronald Dykes is president and managing partner of Diamatrix, a provider of products and services to ophthalmic surgeons, and a celebrated artist. Founded in 1993, Diamatrix helped usher in a new era of cataract surgery with its revolutionary Trapezoid diamond blade. Designed in conjunction with Clear Cornea pioneer, Dr. Charles H. Williamson, M.D. of the Williamson Eye Center in Baton Rouge, this patented blade design helped make Clear Cornea Cataract Surgery the most effective and efficient surgical procedure today. As a cataract and refractive surgery market innovator, Dykes is proud to have launched the Xpand Iris Speculum, an intraocular expansion and retention device that expands the iris, enlarging the pupil during intraocular surgery which

36

can be removed following the procedure without damaging the eye tissue and allows for increased procedure visualization. Originally from Sacramento, California, Dykes joined the U.S Navy and served in Vietnam. After he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Connecticut, he became intrigued by ophthalmic technology, because it allowed one to see the eye in ways never seen before. In the 1980s, after studying at Georgetown University of Medicine in Washington, D.C., a job with The Avery Eye Institute brought Dykes and his wife to The Woodlands. After working at Diamatrix for over 10 years, Dykes’s son and daughter purchased the business. Not one to slow down, Dykes is now developing a handheld post-surgical stigmatism device and recently opened the Art of the Eye Studio in The Woodlands where he can often be found teaching art to his beloved grandchildren. “I’m always looking for the differentiator in the market that will create better outcomes for patients,” says Dykes. “We are made by our creator in his image, and, therefore we are creators—we are by nature creative.” City Lifestyle salutes Dr. Giridhar Vedala, Will Herndon Ron Dykes, as they mark significant change in their own lives and in the lives of others. Special Thank You to Memorial Hermann Hospital for providing us access to the beautiful new South Tower.

KENNETH MCKEY LEAD ORGANIZER MEN’S GROUP

Kenneth McKey, lovingly known as Kenny, is as brave as he is gracious. A doting husband, father, and grandfather, Kenny has a lot to live for. And, with a story like his, he has a lot to share, too. Kenny currently serves as the lead organizer for the Men’s Group at The Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center, a place of hope and restoration for those affected by the process of battling cancer. Most would falter given the task of facing such grand requests for support, but for Kenny, it has become second nature. While he himself has been cancer free for several years now, the traumatic experience of discovering his Stage 4 Throat Cancer diagnosis and subsequent battle to overcome his illness has gifted him the commendable capacity to courageously support others in their time of battle.

Realizing that it takes a village to traverse the choppy waters of diagnosis, radiation, chemotherapy, and everything in between, Kenny jumped at the serendipitous opportunity to organize a Men’s Group for Canopy. Some four years later, and Kenny’s efforts have aided in the establishment of a solid group. Now, on the last Friday of every month, the Men’s Group sits over a meal, a football game, or a game of cards, to offer hope and healing with one another while ensuring an uninterrupted ear and promising a place of positivity and support.

HOUSE OF GARZA TROY GARZA’S FEARLESS MIND FOR DESIGN

ARTICLE BY LAURA L. GREEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS SPICKS

M AK E R’S ST U D IO | A RTS + CULTURE

Troy Garza is perpetually curious. You can feel his mind working when something intrigues him. He wants to understand the process, so that he can use it to make something all his own. He has no reticence when it comes to finding out what he needs to know and then jumping right in with his own experimentation. At the photo shoot for this story, his mind was on the equipment and how to light a subject. He takes his own photos for social media, and he’s looking for ways to better convey the brilliant sheen and the rich colors for which his pieces are known. What if a series of mirrors were used to bounce the light around the room, he asks? The conversation plunges deep into the weeds over the principles of light behavior in photography. Furniture is Troy’s passion, but it’s not his only one by any means. He and his sister Mandy have two shops that sit side by side on a quiet corner a few blocks off Main Street in the old town area of Tomball. 209th Designs is brimming with Troy’s work, much of it in monochromatic white and gray, and it runs the gamut from refinished furniture to art canvases to clothing. The adjacent Muse: 301 is filled with larger statement pieces, a mix of furniture and art by Troy and his fellow artists and craftsmen, who work alongside one other in a set of buildings behind the two shops.

A 1956 Mercury engine block transformed into a coffee table

A wooden deck with a few chairs and couches sits among the buildings, with a wall-size mural emblazoned with the words, “Viva Arte!” serving as a backdrop to the seating area. It’s a focal point that brings together the disparate structures into a cohesive “artists’ compound.” Years ago, Troy and Mandy’s mother had her own shop in Tomball, the well-known Dahlia’s Boutique, which was located on W. Main Street. When their mother passed away, Troy says their desire to continue her legacy led them to open the two shops, and to see where the journey would take them. On any given day, the buildings are filled with activity, and it surprises new customers to see the extent of the work going on, like something you’d find at an artist’s colony in Marfa or L.A. or New York, says Mandy, who manages the shops. “I’m the mother hen of the businesses. I work amongst all men. I actually prefer that at the moment. We all show a level of respect. We protect each other without drama.” She and her husband Charlie also run a cool and kitschy cigar bar called Henry’s Place, housed in a vintage Spartan trailer that’s located on the compound. You may find Troy’s friend, woodworker Jim Gott in the woodshop, sanding a live edge coffee table he’s built. Another friend, metalworker John Cobb, may be creating a fire pit or a wine rack from a car engine block. Other members of this crew of creatives are doing prep work--repairing and sanding, readying a piece for Troy to paint in the building they call the “Poor House”—“The place where the magic happens,” says Troy. Artists are often characterized as brash or disorganized. This is not Troy. He has a calm, meticulous nature and an ability to break down and coordinate the steps of all these processes, likely honed by the years he spent as a kid helping his dad, whose job was in avionics at Hooks Airport. Troy has a checklist. He keeps track of the time involved in creating a piece, how much material is needed, the flow of the pieces through each stage, from acquisition to repair to sanding to finishing, then on to the customer’s home or to the showroom floor. “I know every square inch of a piece,” he says. “You have to learn that connection. When I hear the sound of sanding, I can tell if it’s being done correctly. It’s not menial work.“

Years ago, Troy created his own clothing line. He had studied fashion design in college and was working at his mother’s shop when he developed a fascination for finely crafted wood furniture. Early-tomid 20th-century pieces—hardwood bureaus and chests of drawers and consoles that were of sturdy character with beautiful lines. The kind of furniture that no one was making anymore. He searched out one of the few local furniture refinishers he could find to teach him the craft. It was 2014, and the craze over chalk paint was killing off traditional wood stain refinishing. He knew the fad wouldn’t last. Chalk paint was a quick and easy home décor fix, but it wasn’t art. “No one knows they’re in a cult until they’re in a cult,” he muses. Troy continued to learn everything there was to know about furniture refinishing and was delivering pieces to clients when he began to notice in some high-end homes a kind of kitchen cabinet finish that captivated him. Richly colored, shiny finishes, like you’d see on a new car. He started asking questions. It turned out the cabinets were done in lacquer.

The process was not easily replicated, and the paint could not be obtained through a big box home improvement store. He connected with custom painters to understand the process, figured out where to source the paint, and began to experiment. Soon he was perfecting his own furniture refinishing style with lacquer. His first pieces, the ones he learned on, were placed on the floor for the 2020 grand opening of 209th Designs. Within a week, he’d sold out. He started looking for old furniture at donation center stores and in resale shops. It didn’t take long for the word of mouth about his work to spread. Now, when he gets to the shop in the morning, he sometimes finds an old piece of furniture sitting out front. “They’d rather give it to me than to Goodwill,” he smiles. Troy has a vision for other mediums too. He and metal fabricator John Cobb met through mutual friends and started working on concepts that take car parts and transform them into furniture--fire pits, coffee tables, and wine racks made from old engine blocks. Other smaller parts become lamps

and vases. They were using parts they’d found wasting away in salvage yards, and as the word spread, people starting bringing the parts to them. Troy says they had stumbled upon a niche, people who wanted their homes to reflect their love of cars and boats and aviation. Inspired by fashion clothing from Dolce & Gabbana and AMIRI that can cost over a thousand dollars at places likes Saks Fifth Avenue, he’s also devised a special paint and a technique for applying a splatter effect to jeans, t-shirts, and even reading glasses. It involves hand-splattering the pieces with a flick of the wrist that he perfected after consulting a professional bass fisherman about the art of casting a fishing line. When luxury fashion house Versace made the jump into home furnishings, the sofas and chairs oozed the color and style that the design house was known for—there’s no mistaking a Versace couch, says Troy. He wants to take that excitement and artistry and make it attainable to people in all walks of life, to add a jolt of excitement to everyday environments. “What if Versace opened up a Chili’s? It would be absolutely awesome!” The Garza siblings have another property with a house on it behind the compound, and they’re mulling its future use. Troy envisions an AirBnBtype living quarters, where aspiring artists can stay while they help out and learn their craft. He says it’s important to leave a legacy that others can follow. “Serious students only,” he emphasizes. “Are you willing to immerse yourself ? I can teach you the techniques, but not the lifestyle. I grab a brush, even on prep day.” Another thing that can’t be taught is the connection with the piece. “A piece is like a person, like a new friend. It’s sad to see it leave.”

In the face of grief, Midge and David connected and found hope in their long walks, picnics, weekly Spanish classes, and the process of healing together. This special connection organically blossomed from companionship to something deeper - true love - and the couple joyfully tied the knot at The Village’s beautiful Waterway Room in March. The nearly constant laughter and larger-than-life smiles in no way indicate the harrowing story between newlyweds Midge and David. In the winter of 2019, Midge and David moved into The Village with their ailing, long-time partners, who sadly passed not long after.

Working for You

Carol Knott Tefft was phenomenal to work with! My house was only on the market for 6 days. She went out of her way to help me close f rom a distance. I’ve also worked with Carol on a few other sales, and a few rentals. Carol’s honesty has led me to some great real estate decisions. Most Realtors have become complacent and lazy in the internet age, but Carol still provides the great level of hometown service everyone loves. She always answers the phone and greets you with a smile. Keep up the good work Carol!”

A Peek at Our Community’s Open-Air Markets and What Makes Each One Unique

There’s just something about the spring air that begs for a stroll along the aisles of a farmers market. For some, it’s the draw of fresh produce while others find the eggs to be the item of desire. And for others still, it’s simply the contagious energy that comes with neighbors connecting with their farmers and their food. Whatever the desire, The Woodlands area boasts an impressive variety of markets, each with its own unique style.

Showcasing a collective of vendors that satisfy a rigorous application process, the Montgomery Farmers Market is intent on empowering its visitors with the knowledge needed to shift away from the Truckitarian model of the modern food supply chain. Focused on creating the space for neighbors to establish long-term, collaborative relationships with farmers, the Montgomery Market is unique in more ways than one. If the idea of a food revolution resonates, this market is a must see.

Continuing several generations of family farming, the Theiss Farms Market on Rayford houses the second storefront location for the Theiss family. Daily, this conveniently located market offers an open-air, family-owned alternative to the larger grocery stores for items like fresh produce, eggs, honey, and just about anything gardening related.
