Then read the wit and wisdom of three brilliant, local women entrepreneurs, as they share advice and encouragement in letters to their less experienced, younger selves in “Dear Younger Me.” And, our very own country singer/songwriter, Morgan Ashley is taking Texas by storm, and was recently named Female Artist of the Year by the Texas Country Music Association. A GRANDE DAME OF DINING EMBRACES WHAT’S NEXT

Texans love New Orleans. In fact, more people from Texas visit the Big Easy each year than from any other state, according to the Hospitality Research Center at the University of New Orleans. Though many of us make a point of visiting frequently, it’s difficult for anyone to say they understand the foodways of this premiere culinary city—where it’s been and where it’s going—if they’ve never dined at Commander’s Palace. Not just for its jazz brunch—though Commander’s pioneered the concept and sets the standard for opulent, weekend daytime dining. (DO order the bread pudding souffle!) Commander’s Palace is known for far more. Today’s culinary landscape in New Orleans has evolved immensely over the last decade-an exciting, crowded field of chefs and restaurants, with a rich array of influences and cutting edge concepts making their way to the forefront in a city whose passion has always been cooking. You can sample classic Creole at one of several historically significant “Grande Dame” restaurants, where the menus are delicious monuments to the way things were. But Commander’s Palace, opened in 1893, has accomplished the feat of taking the rich

old past and making it relevant and modern—innovating a “haute Creole” style that features sophisticated dishes which are also freshly conceived, locally sourced, and a feast for the eyes in that Instagram-able way that has become a requirement. The credit goes to co-proprietors Ti Adelaide Martin and Lally Brennan, two members of the Brennan family of restaurateurs, which has owned Commander’s since 1974. And, in a fabled kitchen previously run by the likes of James Beard Award-winners Paul Prudhomme, Emeril Lagasse, and Tory McPhail--Meg Bickford was recently named executive chef, the first woman to take the helm. Bickford says that as Covid has lifted, a burst of culinary creativity has been unleashed in the city, and Commander’s Palace looks forward to continuing to preserve and innovate. On being the first female top chef at the restaurant, Meg says, “I’m proud and very fortunate. This restaurant has been run by intelligent, powerful, creative women for a very long time. Ella [Brennan] paved the way for current owners, Ti and Lally. And our CFO and directors of hospitality and marketing are women. I’m in an amazing group of people!”

If You Build It, They Will Come From the beginning, the mission of Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center has been to provide its services to anyone with cancer--no matter where they are in their journey or where they receive treatment, remembers Linda Nelson, who oversees Canopy as Director of Business Development, Marketing and Community Relations at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center. “The overwhelming consensus was that the program should be free, and it shouldn’t look like a clinic or a hospital,” says Linda. When the center opened in 2016, Linda says it was a leap of faith. “You always think, if you build it, will they come? And they did!” With 70 volunteers, many of them cancer survivors, and around 74 programs a month, Canopy offers cooking classes, yoga, educational resources, support groups, and more. Its prosthesis fitting services and wig room bring patients from across the Houston area, says Linda. Canopy runs entirely on philanthropic dollars, she says, and owes much to the annual Memorial Hermann In the Pink of Health Luncheon. Canopy is one of the few programs of its kind in the nation, says Linda, and was recently recognized by Interfaith Ministries of The Woodlands as a 2022 “Hometown Hero.” “We want to be that warm blanket when someone walks through that door,” she says. “We know how to take care of cancer patients and their family members. I am sitting in my newly opened art gallery surrounded by paintings I created, listening to Beethoven, contemplating what I would reveal to you about the last 40 or 50 years. So many things I tried—I failed, but I also succeeded. The most painful failure was my corporate career. The exhaustive hours I worked, and the seriousness with which I took every assignment did not enable me to be the laid-back team player that seemed to be the key to business success. To acknowledge a company would rather do without my effort and energy, and chance success with an unknown yet-tobe-hired replacement was crushing! “Me too” was an unknown phrase back then. I endured that too. Personal relationships were difficult too. Again, despite my best efforts I often failed. Dating was more of a chalk it up and move on experience. Casual encounters rarely led to more than that. What I learned, finally, was to take the time to become a friend. So at 48, I married. We lived a life most would envy. Becoming a widow meant success; I was not replaced. Imagine my surprise to report a second marriage. And, the biggest news is one I will not reveal because it is just too amazing. Let me just say, feed your creative bug, and you will find happiness. So take my advice. Don’t take your job or yourself too seriously. But do find a new job before you quit. Good luck! Emily

Hello Dear, I know how much you worry about the future. I feel your fears and see your big dreams. Some days, you don’t know how your future will unfold and who is in it to share it with you. Let me tell you that there’s a sweet surprise waiting for you. Everything you dreamed in your heart is here. Maybe not in the exact way you thought it would happen or in the exact time. But it’s here and it’s real. It has not been easy to get here. You had to persevere and work hard. You had to pray with all your heart and let your curiosity and passion lead the way. Then, you had to learn to trust in amazing people and be part of a community. Your vision is way bigger now. You have accomplished so much but want to do so much more. In fact, you are not even halfway there. But don’t worry, life has been so generous with you and there are beautiful people around you who love you and you love them back. You are enough and you have everything you need to go where you want to go. Some days are hard but every day is a beautiful new opportunity. You don’t have to worry one bit, my love—you got this! What I’ve learned on my journey thus far is that Paulo Coelho was spot on: “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Keep on working, loving and learning. A powerhouse vocalist and killer songwriter, 25-year-old Morgan Ashley of College Station has taken the Texas Country Music Scene by storm. She’s racked up multiple Top 40 songs on the Texas charts and has proven she’s one of the hardest working artists in the state. Whether playing with a full band or acoustic, she captures the audience as soon as she begins to sing. Her talent and dedication have earned her fans across the state and beyond, as well as the highest honor for a female vocalist in Texas--the Texas Country Music Association named her the 2021 Female Artist of the Year. Before moving to College Station, I grew up in Columbus, Texas, where I pretty much did every activity 4-H and FFA had to offer – barrel racing, leather making, cake making, anything I could do. Then one day I decided to sign up for the FFA talent show. I was nervous to get up and talk in front of people, but for some reason, I thought I could get up there and sing. I sang “Famous in a Small Town” by Miranda Lambert and “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. I was so nervous, but everyone was so supportive. I decided to finally learn

to play the guitar that had been sitting in my room and started doing open mic nights within the next two months. Then I started playing shows and have been grinding at it ever since. THAT’S IMPRESSIVE. AT WHAT POINT DID YOU REALIZE YOU HAD THE TALENT TO TAKE THIS FURTHER? When I was taking guitar lessons, my guitar teacher really made me believe that music was something I could pursue as my career. I went to college right out of high school and did one semester. Then, I decided to ask my parents if it would be okay for me to just work and play music. They were on board and said, “Yes, absolutely, work and play music.” IT’S CERTAINLY WORKING OUT FOR YOU. YOU’VE NOW HAD SEVEN TOP 40 SONGS ON THE TEXAS CHARTS AND ARE WORKING ON A NEW EP. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE NEW MUSIC? I am super excited to be releasing a new song this month called “Warning Label.” It’s about wishing the person you broke up with had come with a list of precautions before you entered the relationship. The 3-Time Paralympian on Perseverance, Winning Gold and Giving Back 26

Saying she is an Army veteran, a double amputee, and an Olympic gold medalist is just the beginning of who Kari Miller-Ortiz is. She is a self-described geek who loves sci-fi, and her husband, Jay Ortiz, a strength trainer and disabled veteran who served in both the Marines and Army, and is the reason Kari now lives in Texas. The buoyant personality of this coach and advocate of people with disabilities sparkles infectiously. Kari doesn’t even consider losing her legs the most tragic adversity she has faced. “It was a rough spot in my life, but it wasn’t the most tragic.” Kari believes tragedies and letdowns teach you to be adaptable and how to persevere. They have made her who she is today—a woman with a mission to give back. “Any way that I am able to empower and help other people because I have been given so much,” Kari says. “That’s what drives me.” Kari Miller-Ortiz is a three-time Paralympian, a 2008 and 2012 silver medalist, who won gold as part of the U.S. Paralympic Sitting Volleyball Team at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio De Janeiro. She recently served as coach for the U.S. Sitting Volleyball Team at the Invictus Games, which took place in April in The Hague, Netherlands. Kari first met the Games’ Founder, Prince Harry, while competing at The Warrior Games in Colorado Springs in 2016. Back then, she was more than a bit enamored with meeting the Prince. “I was presenting him with a shirt, and he kissed me on both cheeks, and in my mind, I said, ‘That means we’re married.’” laughs Kari. She and the rest of the U.S. veterans made an impression as well, for this was the trip that inspired HRH, The Duke of Sussex, to launch the international Invictus Games to bring together wounded veterans from around the world. (Invictus means unconquered.) Kari’s journey to get here traversed tragedy and even failure. While serving in 1999, Kari was hit by a drunk driver and lost her legs. Suddenly the multisport athlete who loved to run track and play basketball could no longer compete. So she found a new way. Kari in action

“I had this accident, but immediately I got involved in adaptive sports, immediately I became able to travel the world.” She became a top-tier wheelchair basketball player but ultimately failed to make the Paralympic team. Kari believes what she had already overcome enabled her to power through the disappointment. She tried sitting volleyball, fell in love with it, and ended up being the best in the world. “The best in the world at a sport I had never heard of or done before, all from not being chosen.” Kari says, “Be open. You never know where life will take you.” Adaptive sports were a big part of her recovery, and she strives to help others use them too. Studies show that sports can physically, psychologically, and socially impact those suffering from injuries and illness. Kari feels this is especially true for service members.

“A big part of being in the military is the comradery. We all have this one mission,” Kari says. “So to be taken away from that mission, from that comradery, before you were ready it’s just depressing, it’s a culture shock, so bringing them into sports brings that back.” After her first Paralympics in Bejing, she took a job with the U.S. Paralympics. After London, she joined the Air Force’s wounded, ill and injured program. While there, she helped create community programs and change how doctors assign profiles to service members. Instead of saying they were unfit for P.T., they looked at ways for the injured to participate in activities. “What you get from that is you get the muscle tone, the ability to bounce back if you do get injured, because ya know, people fall down, right?’ Kari says, “but if you

fall down and you have no muscle tone, poor circulation, and you’re depressed, you’re not going to get up.” Now she is the Director of People and Culture for Move United, the largest disabled sports organization across the U.S. It helps fund other organizations that put on events for adults and children with disabilities. Move United has 202 chapters. While it supports other organizations in the Houston area, it does not currently have a chapter here. Kari is involved in outreach to change that. With the Paralympics coming to LA in 2028, Move United hopes to give opportunities to pursue an adaptive sport to 90% of those with disabilities within 50 miles of where they live. They are currently at 70%, and Kari Miller-Ortiz is determined to get them there.

The John Cooper School recently held its annual “Bohemian Dragon, Revelry and Rhapsody Gala” at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center. The highly anticipated event featured live music, dancing, cocktails, dinner, incredible acrobatic performances, and an auction. An impressive array of items up for bid included concert tickets for the likes of Katy Perry, the CMA Music Festival, the Bottlerock Napa Valley Music Festival, The Eagles, Brandi Carlile and Garth Brooks, as well as vacation excursions to the Bahamas, Florida and Barbados. The highpoint of the evening was a special time of recognition to honor retiring Head of School, Michael Maher, who has served the school admirably for the last 22 years. One of the most entertaining galas in The Woodlands this season, this annual event is a longstanding tradition dating back to 1989, the year after The John Cooper School was founded. Bravo! Boulder is an ideal base camp, no matter what your travel profile. Getting there is easy enough. Boulder is a mere 30-minute drive from Denver International Airport.
