The co-chairs are onboard, the date is set, and the need for the 2022 YES to YOUTH Gala is great. This year’s theme for the black-tie optional fundraising event for YES to YOUTH - Montgomery County Youth Services (Y2Y-MCYS) is “It’s Written in the Stars.” “Let these kids have dreams, not of being beaten, battered and abused,” says Dannette Suding, CEO of Y2YMCYS. Instead, she wants them to believe the sky’s the limit and say, “they want to be president, or they want to go to college.” Donations raised will in part support Y2Y-MCYS’s four mental health counseling centers that deal with suicide prevention, anxiety, depression, and bullying at school.
“Right now, there is an unprecedented surge of teens with attempted suicide, and we are trying to get out that we are here for you.” says Suding, “All of our programs are offered at no cost to the clients, so you can bring your child in for mental health counseling and you will never see a bill.” With 160 qualified families on the waiting list, it’s hoped the Gala will provide the funds needed to hire more counselors. YES to YOUTH - MCYS also offers a safe and nurturing setting where abused, battered, sex-trafficked, homeless,
and at-risk youth can begin healing from the past and become empowered for the future. The updated BridgeWay Shelter recently doubled its previous capacity with a capital project that added one cottage with beds for 15 girls and another with beds for 15 boys. Even so, further support is needed. The four chairs of this year’s Gala share Suding’s passion for helping children. They volunteer their time to multiple committees in the community and are accomplished mothers, educators, and businesswomen. “The kids are what have inspired me,” says Christin Allphin, Executive Vice President of Woodforest National Bank. “Organizations have faced many challenges the past two years, but one thing remains the same, the kids at YES to YOUTH still need our help.” Michele Kooken is the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for STRIKE Energy. By chairing the Gala, Michele hopes to ensure the counseling and shelter programs receive funds to meet the demand. Linda Leto Head, Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for External & Employee Relationships,is an awardwinning educator within technical career programs and has been with Lone Star College for more than 30 years. She draws on her extensive experience to advocate for those can who can not advocate for themselves. “[We] believe that all children should have a safe and loving place to call home and trusted adults to care
for them, uplift them, and provide for their needs,” says Judy Larson Olson, whose occupation is as day job is as a Production Manager for PrimeLending in The Woodlands. The co-chairs of this year’s event are also eager to explain and get others on board with their cause. Kristin Michelle English, Organize with Kristin, says YES to YOUTH provides her the opportunity to show unconditional acceptance, caring, and support to children at the shelter. She wants every child to feel valued and respected. Andrea Aertker taught for eight years in low socioeconomic schools mentoring underserved, struggling students. She is very excited to be a part of YES to YOUTH, because it allows her to continue serving children who need others to believe in them. Bethany Shrewsberry, Doctorate of Pharmacy, in 2016 helped in husband, Cecil’s start his own oral & maxiollofacial surgery practice. She believes every child deserves to be loved, appreciated and shown how unique they truly are. Tiffany Baker runs a real estate team with her husband with RE/MAX Integrity. She loves spending quality time with the children at the YES to YOUTH Shelter because she wants them to know they are important and deeply loved. All of these generous women give back countless hours to the community and they encourage you to help YES to YOUTH Montgomery County Youth Services however
you can. You can participate in the monthly giving program. Come out and tour the shelter, cook the kids a meal, or volunteer another of your personal talents. Or, if golf is more your thing, attend the golf tournament in November with Jeff Maggart. Of course, they’d also be thrilled for you to become a sponsor and buy tickets to the Gala scheduled for Aug 27th. For more information on how you can help, contact development@ youthmc.org

LIFESTYLE LETTER
Seizing the Moment Makes Life Worth Living Look at the latest studies on the subject, and the conclusions are all very similar. What constitutes happiness? What makes life satisfying? Four ingredients: Faith, Family, Friends, and Productivity (work that fills a need, that helps others). But when we prioritize these parts of our lives, it doesn’t mean that our days are going to be smooth and filled with ease. The same data shows that struggle and hardship in the service of something outside yourself is part of happiness too. And it turns out that the “self-forgetfulness” that’s involved in centering our lives on those four key ingredients can give us the courage to face difficulties and do things we may have never done before. In this, our Explorers Issue, we encourage you to move outside of your usual patterns and routines and find ways within our community and elsewhere to chart a course for new adventures with the people you care about, to make a difference in the lives of those within your sphere of influence. Whether it’s a planning a trip with family or friends, giving back to your community during “gala season” for the many excellent non-profits in The Woodlands area (which unofficially kicks off this month), or starting fresh in some aspect of your own life, we have the personal stories, the travel ideas, the local opportunities for connecting with cultural and active pursuits, that can help you reach outside of the ordinary and seek out something new and wonderful. There’s a treasure trove of ideas and inspiration awaiting you within these pages. So take time to explore them, and don’t forget to share with us your own personal projects and innovative ideas that might help someone strike out on their own journey.

Dave is a resident of The Village who enjoys socializing with his buddies in a group affectionately referred to as the “Sundowners Club.” The people and the activities at The Village are important to Dave. Drop by for a visit, and you’ll see him out and about playing poker, bingo and socializing with friends. Dave enjoys the quiet moments too, relaxing in his beautiful apartment with a floor-toceiling glass door and windows throughout. He often listens to concerto piano music (His late wife Rita was a concert pianist.), while taking in the breathtaking view of the surrounding trees, and he can even feed the birds from his balcony! Especially important to Dave, The Village is located close to shopping and dining, making it easy for him to enjoy outings with friends to some of his favorite restaurants, Landry’s, PF Chang’s and Via Emilia among them. Dave’s daughter Carla says her father is “doing well¬—thriving in life.” She loves to see her dad so happy! They communicate daily, and she is thankful that there is never a worry as to how he’s doing because of the technology and helpful staff at The Village.

THE JEWEL OF THE HILL COUNTRY IS THE PERFECT PICK FOR A QUICK GETAWAY! ARTICLE BY MELISSA D’MELLO, THE WOODLANDS WANDERER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY
FREDERICKSBURG CONVENTION AND
Nestled in the heart of the Hill Country and brimming with history, culture and dining options, Fredericksburg has transformed in recent years as a top Texas travel destination. More popularly known for its wineries, this idyllic hill country stop was recently voted the most charming spot for a southern vacation. Fredericksburg is a great place to visit all year long, with blooming wildflowers ablaze in Spring, grape harvest season towards the end of summer, Octoberfest in the fall, and magical holiday time when the whole town lights up like a scene from a Hallmark movie. What makes this unofficial food and wine capital of the Lone Star State unique is its German heritage, which has influenced a melting pot of food and architecture. Fredericksburg is currently celebrating its 175th anniversary until May 2022, with events through April, ending with a grand finale the first week of May. Getting There: Driving makes for an easy and scenic day trip, but you can also opt for a more exclusive, quicker journey by flying directly into Gillespie County airport via chartered plane. Stay: Fredericksburg offers a range of lodging options, from historic log cabins and cozy bed and breakfasts to more unique stays. • Properties in the Heart of Fredericksburg • The Blacksmith Quarters on Barons Creek–Located right off Main Street, this stunning compound of cottages is set on an original blacksmith property. Things to Do: Because Fredericksburg is the epicenter of Texas Wine Country, it's easy enjoy the wealth of wineries in the area and so much more. • History: Learn about Fredericksburg's German heritage with a stop at the Pioneer Museum, head to Marktplatz, the town square where Vereins Kirche, a replica of a 19th-century church, stands tall, and the National Museum of the Pacific War which features WWII exhibits, including a recreated combat zone. • Wineries: Spanning approximately 9 million acres, Texas Hill Country AVA (American Viticultural Area), which includes Fredericksburg, is the second largest certified viticultural area in America. With more than 50 wineries in Fredericksburg’s Gillespie County alone, the biggest question is where to start. Here are our recommendations: Ab Astris, Augusta Vin, Becker Vineyards, Pedernales Cellars, Signor Vineyards, and Heath Sparkling Wines for a little bubbly. • Breweries & Distilleries: Don’t miss out on the many Bavarian inspired biergartens, the oldest brewpub in Texas - Fredericksburg Brewing Company, and Alstadt Brewery. For something stronger stop by Garrison Brothers, home of the first bourbon distillery outside Kentucky. • Shopping: With franchises and chain stores not allowed in the historic district, you are guaranteed to discover rare heirlooms and locally made products. • Art Galleries: Named one of the “Top Five Western Art Towns” by Southwest Art Magazine and home to numerous working artists, Fredericksburg is an

art lover’s paradise. Stroll through the First Friday Art Walk or visit the dozens of galleries located on the west end of Marktplatz. • Get Outdoors: For most Texans, summitting the pink granite Enchanted Rock is almost a rite of passage. A stone’s throw away from Fredericksburg, a visit to this natural area offers the opportunity to not only disconnect but take in stunning vistas of the expansive hill country. Fredericksburg is also a popular birding spot, and offers scenic views for bicycle riding and stargazing with two international dark sky parks. • Peaches and Pecans: A favorite Texas summertime staple, make sure to stop by a roadside stand to pick up this fresh fruit from the many surrounding orchards during peach season, which runs mid-May through August. In the fall and holiday season, many roadside stands also offer pecans. Dining Out: From bratwurst to brews, this Texas town flaunts its German heritage. Make sure to try the classics, but leave room for the contemporary eateries.

• Breakfast: Start your day off right with coffee at Caliche Coffee Bar or Java Ranch. For a larger meal stop by Emma and Ollie or the Old German Bakery. • Otto’s German Bistro: A farm-to-table hill county establishment dishing out Bavarian comfort food with a modern twist, like their duck schnitzel • Rathskeller: Located in the basement of an old hospital with a few street-level tables, this snug, rustic spot serves up both German and American plates. For dessert, don't skip the famous peach bread pudding with homemade caramel sauce! • Vaudeville: An exceptional space that houses a bistro, art gallery and boutique. Opt to order a-la-carte from the bistro menu or the prix fixe supper club, which combines French flair with southern comfort food. • La Bergerie: An Artisanal wine bar and market specializing in fine wines, cheeses and charcuterie. Great for a snack in between wine tastings. • Salvation Speakeasy: The only Speakeasy in Fredericksburg hidden in plain sight; a specialty cocktail laboratory on a 10-acre orchard surrounded by blackberries, peaches, pears, plums, pecans and grapes.

For many Texans, their first experience eating Florida stone crab was at Truluck's.
22
LOCA L’S CH OICE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
THIRT Y
It’s been thirty years this month since the first Truluck’s opened on Westheimer Road in Houston in a shiny, curvy diner-style building that was as unique as it was enticing, introducing to Texas the then relatively unknown Florida stone crab. The experience of savoring those plump, freshly cracked claws for the first time at Truluck’s is seared into the minds of many a Texan. Chris Davis is the managing partners of Truluck’s The Woodlands. The restaurant sits on the shoreline of Lake Woodlands in Hughes Landing, its dining room outlined in floor-to-ceiling windows that pull you into the gorgeous view. But the view and the architecture are playing a supporting role--it’s the ethereal nature of its fresh seafood offerings that Truluck’s is known for, along with the warm and impeccable service. Davis says the founders of Truluck’s forged strong relationships with Florida crabbers from the very start. They bought their own fishery and created a foundational commitment to quality and freshness that the restaurant has taken care to stay true to for three decades. That commitment extends across the menu, and is also reflected in the restaurant’s dedication to sustainability and conservancy. Support of the community is also a priority, says Davis.
YEARS
“The Woodlands is unique out of all of our markets,” he explains, not only the restaurant’s appearance and its picturesque location but also the way in which Truluck’s and the community are connected. Each month the restaurant holds a special breakfast to benefit a different local non-profit, which receives all proceeds from the meal. Recent honorees include Interfaith of The Woodlands, Children’s Safe Harbor and Yes to Youth Montgomery County Youth Services. “We’re putting back into the community the support they’ve given to us,” says Davis. Truluck’s “nothing but the best” ethos is reflected in new dishes just added to the menu last month: a decadent Maine lobster mac and cheese, a King Crab heirloom tomato salad with warm bacon, Dutch yellowtail crudo finished with fresh lime and Maldon sea salt, and a salmon crudo with cucumber, lemon and curried crème fraiche. Such thoughtfully conceived new dishes are a fitting addition during this celebrational year for the restaurant. “Celebration” is what Truluck’s is all about, says Davis. “We’re a restaurant geared to the community, who holds a party every evening for their guests.” Happy 30th, and may there be many more to come!

Johnny’s Back
in Town
Fresh from a Stint in Europe, Singer-Songwriter Johnny Falstaff is Seizing the Moment ARTICLE BY LAURA GREEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS SPICKS
Johnny Falstaff is always moving. “I cannot stand to sit still, it drives me up the wall.” The long and lean country music performer, who for decades has been known for his suave vocals, guitar-picking precision and clever lyrics, has quickly settled into being home again in Texas after living in Dresden, Germany. He intended to take some time off once he got here, to recalibrate and ponder the future. “It sounds so poetic,” he muses, “but it didn’t even come close to happening.” Friends started calling and gigs started happening. “That was 3 days after I got home, and it’s been non-stop ever since!” Though often associated with honky-tonk, Falstaff’s musical style defies pinning down. Listen to his most recent album, “Lost in the City Lights,” and you’ll find him equally at home when crooning a moody ballad, belting out a rockabilly tune, or performing the straightforward, honest vocals of traditional country. Falstaff enjoys the mix of genres. Someday, he’d like to explore the idea of performing with a full orchestra. He explains the vibe he’s going for: “Imagine Frank Sinatra singing a country song!” Born in Alice, Falstaff lived in Alvin as a child. He grew up on the classic country of that era, with its electric guitars, base drums and pedal steel guitar, sung by the likes of Conway Twitty and Buck Owens. At around the age of 10, he was introduced to the “countrypolitan” sound, exemplified by Ray Price--a smoother, mellower style, making use of a wider range of instrumentation. An evolution of the “Nashville sound,” countrypolitan bridged the gap between country and pop in the 1970s. “It was a completely different vibe, and it reached out and grabbed me,” he says.
Falstaff has been a successful recording artist and a local fan favorite for many years, starting his own band in the 1990s, ultimately going solo and releasing his first album in the early 2000s. He performed often in Houston and toured across the U.S. Then in 2015 he traveled to Germany and ended up staying. He discovered a thriving country music scene and a loyal German fan base. They were true aficionados, and they kept him on his toes. “It’s really amazing. They would come up to me after a gig and say things like, ‘You play that song so well, and so-and-so recorded that and played guitar with this amp in 1957.’ They would know more about a song than we do!” He spent 15 years in Germany, singing and playing his way across Europe, from Switzerland to Italy to Spain, exploring the cultures he encountered along the way. On one occasion, he was performing at a festival in northern Italy. On a break, he left the festival grounds and walked into a mom and pop café, “and this gal comes up, ‘Oh, you’re a country artist. Are you hungry? My mom made this lasagna last night.’” He sat there and savored the first non-tomato, Bechamel-style lasagna he had ever tasted, while back in the kitchen the grandmother was handmaking more pasta. It was a perfect scene, and the memory is still crystal clear to him. While on a visit back to the U.S. in 2020, Falstaff discovered a swollen lymph node in his neck. After several pandemic-related flight delays, he was able to return to Germany to have it examined. It turned out to be cancer. He went through chemo and radiation, and a year later, at the conclusion of treatment, he was declared cancer-free. “It’s a freak-out when you’re first diagnosed,” he recalls. “You Google it: Half of the results say you’re going to die, and half are hopeful, people who come

out stronger and better than they were before. You run across somebody who puts out a video, who had the exact same thing, and it shows you how they came through. It gives you that thing to hold onto to help you through it.” Inspired by those videos, and hoping to help anyone else facing the fear of dealing with a cancer diagnosis, Falstaff created a series of videos of his own treatment that can still be found on Youtube. Since his return to Texas in the fall of 2021, Falstaff’s schedule has been packed. He’s playing gigs across the state, making stops at well-known Houston venues such as the Continental Club, Cowboy Surfer and McGonigel’s Mucky Duck. He’s in New Orleans throughout April and returns to Texas next month, playing here in The Woodlands on May 14th at the Dosey Doe location on Research Forest. He’s also in the process of shooting a music video. With so much on his plate, finding time for songwriting is tricky. “I have to seize a quiet moment here and there.” Nevertheless, he has a whole album’s worth of songs that he’s “dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s on” so that he can get into the studio and start recording. On top of all this, Falstaff writes screenplays too, first catching the screenwriting bug in 2010 on the B-movie thriller, “Honky Tonk Blood,” the title inspired by a song of his that goes by the same name. He co-wrote the script, and the movie premiered at the River Oaks Theatre. “I’ve written numerous short films” he says, and he has many more
ideas in his head, “but Holy Smokes, there’s only so much time in a day!” “Lost in the City Lights” was released in 2020, just as the world was beginning to shut down due to COVID. As with other musical artists, his ability to showcase the album through touring was placed on hold, and he relied on social media and other online resources to promote it. Though the album was successful, he missed the human element. “There’s nothing like getting out there, shaking hands, sharing a drink and DNA with people.” Now, “I’m back in the states to stay,” says Falstaff. He’d like to travel and perform in Europe again, but Texas is home. On his to-do list are a few states out west that he has yet to explore--Montana, the Dakotas, Wyoming— their expansiveness and solitude quite different from the busy urban setting he called home for the last many years. “Dresden is a pretty big city. I was living in a flat over the street car tracks. Hustle and bustle all the time.” Now, living in Brazoria County in the town of Liverpool, “with a grand population of 550 people,” Falstaff savors the contrast. “We used to have a caution light here, then it broke, and they just took it down.” Sometime in the future, says Falstaff, he’d like to take a break. But even the prospect of a bit of well-deserved downtime is full of plans: “One of these days really soon, I’m taking a sabbatical. I have things I want to finish up and things I want to start.”

slab car community, known for its slow, loud, and bangin’ customizations. Slabs are refashioned old-school American luxury cars such as Cadillacs and Oldsmobiles which have been styled with audacious additions such as spoke elbows, loud stereo systems and sometimes a mounted fifth wheel as custom jewelry. The parade will showcase more than 100 new and never-before-seen art cars from around the country. Expect to see exhibits such as riders, bike and skater groups, wheeled contraptions, bejeweled roadsters and custom-crafted classics, along with fur-covered, metal-modified, fire-breathing varieties. This year’s parade is dedicated to the late Ann Harithas, a leading figure in the Texas art scene. Harithas, a collector and curator, is credited with organizing one of the first public exhibitions of Houston art cars in the 1980s. Art Car Weekend is more than just the parade of cars. It’s four days of showcases, mini parades, live music and kids activities. Festivities open to the public on Thursday, April 7 at Discovery Green downtown. Parade watchers are encouraged to get to the parade route early to grab their spot, and enjoy beverage and merchandise stations along the route.

JOURNEY TO THE FINISH LINE First-Time The Woodlands Marathon Runner Chase Hammett on Preparing for the Big Day ARTICLE BY ERICA HERNANDEZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONYA BUTLER For Chase Hammett, running his first marathon meant learning how to listen to his body and challenge his mind. In the months before The Woodlands Marathon, he bought new shoes, lifted weights and trained hard by running parts of the course long before race day. Chase, an Army veteran and lifelong soccer player, wanted the marathon to be more than just a physical challenge. “I wanted to show people that you're able to overcome things, even if they're difficult,” Chase says. “It’s about taking small steps at a time.” This year, The Woodlands Marathon made a sweeping comeback after dwindling participation during the pandemic. More than 5,000 runners dashed through the city, cheered on by some 25,000 spectators. The course is beloved by runners for its flat, scenic route that winds through the most beautiful aspects of The Woodlands, including a dazzling finish at The Woodlands Waterway. As a Boston Marathon Qualifier, the race attracts elite runners from around the region and the globe. The marathon is the single largest event in The Woodlands, bringing a $4.5 million economic boost to the area and uniting a community already known as a haven for outdoor fitness. The township also hosts the Ironman triathlon as well as various trail and specialty runs throughout the year. “I think it’s incredible how active the community is and how much the community appreciates the value of fitness,” Chase says. “It motivates me to stay healthy and active as well.” This year’s marathon was sponsored by Legacy Capital as a way to give back to The Woodlands fitness lovers. Chase is a managing partner at Legacy Capital’s Woodlands location. While he raced, the team handled race-day announcements and distributed medals. Legacy Capital will serve as the title sponsor for the next five years, says race director Willie Fowles, an exciting development for race organizers. Training for a first marathon proved stressful, but it's the kind of stress that creates personal growth, Chase says. Finishing the race got tougher at mile 19, a leg of the race where even experienced marathoners can hit a mental and physical block called “the wall.” It’s a point when the body exhausts its supply of glycogen, a carbohydrate stored in the muscles and the liver. The body prefers to burn glycogen during exercise, so when a runner CONTINUED >

hits the wall, the body attempts to shut down into preservation mode, leaving the runner with intense fatigue and foggy thinking. The last seven miles of the race are all a mental game, Chase says, but the right training and encouragement from the crowds helped him push through. “You have so much community support,” he says. “If your mind does get tired, you can kind of look elsewhere for that second wind.” To keep himself going, Chase listened to podcasts, drank liquids along the route and took extra snacks to stay fueled. He also invested in the correct shoes–but not at first. When he started training, he took the advice of popular running magazines and bought a pair of heavily-cushioned running shoes. After a painful first run, which left him with sore knees and blisters, he returned the kicks, opting instead for a minimalist pair of Nike Free running shoes. Knowing what worked best for his body made training much easier, Chase says. He also took advantage of training workshops hosted by the marathon and applied their running strategies. When race day finally came, he was comfortable with his fitness and knew exactly what to expect at every leg of the journey. His advice for anyone thinking about running next year? Just do it. There is no failure in the sport of running, he says, and even if you don't complete your first one, you’re still growing. “Something as big as a marathon is a huge accomplishment,” he says “But learning about your limitations and then exceeding those–that’s invaluable knowledge.”

For Chase, the marathon was about discovering his limitations and moving beyond them.

THE ROAD FORWARD FOR TEXAS WINE
40
LOCA LLY SOU R CE D | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
WHICH GRAPES ARE BEST-SUITED FOR TEXAS?
A Q&A WITH TEXAS WINE WRITER RUSSELL KANE
We’re the Mediterranean of the U.S.A. Our biggest wine-growing region, the High Plains AVA, has warm days and relatively cool nights, characteristics that convey the Mediterranean. And what grapes are winning the awards for Texas wines? Those from the Mediterranean climes of Europe: Spain, France, Italy, Sicily. Tempranillo is a great example. It also links back to our Spanish heritage and the missionaries who planted vineyards in the 1660s. Others are Montepulciano, Aglianico, Syrah; and white Rhone varietals such as Viognier, Roussanne, and Marsanne. Also, one of the world’s oldest grape varietals, Moscato. And the number one harvested white grape—and making great wines in Texas--is the Blanc du Bois, which is a surprise to a lot of people. It can grow almost anywhere. All this is not to say that everyone has stopped growing Cabernet and Merlot though.
WHAT DO YOU SAY TO WINE LOVERS WHO ESCHEW TEXAS WINES? Texas wines are winning double gold and best of show at major competitions. To get double gold, everyone on the panel has to agree, not just the majority of judges. Before COVID, I tracked the 2018 results of the two major San Francisco competitions, which included wines from around the world. Texas won more double gold and best of show than wines from any other region that entered these competitions. We’ve finally arrived.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR TEXAS WINE? Dr. Russell D. Kane is a wine writer, blogger and certified master naturalist whose book, "The Wine Slinger Chronicles: Texas on the Vine," offers an insider’s look at the heart and soul of Texas wine. He spoke with TWCL about the state of the industry and its future.
THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE RECENTLY PASSED A NEW WINE LABELING LAW. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR CONSUMERS? The law makes it a lot easier to identify true Texas wines. It gives the consumer, or restaurant beverage manager, or sommelier the ability to identify wines comprised of 100 percent grapes from Texas. It’s a major step.
THE LATEST DATA SHOWS MILLENNIALS ARE DRINKING LESS WINE AND BABY BOOMER CONSUMPTION IS DOWN. SHOULD THE WINE INDUSTRY WORRY? Though older people are drinking less wine than they used to, I see lots of millennials enjoying wine. They’re in the tasting rooms. They’re at the wine bars. So this may not be as big of a problem as some make it out to be.
We’ve got a lot of support now from Texas universities in winemaking and viticulture. They’ve solved many problems. The current issue is dicamba, a toxic herbicide used by cotton farmers in the High Plains. Cotton is resistant due to genetic engineering, but when dicamba blows through the vineyards, you have devastation. It’s made grape growers seek legal action. Texas is the number five wine-producing state, with a tourism and economic impact equal to the number two state, Washington. We have the advantage, because Texas is centrally located in the U.S., and it’s only a short drive from our urban centers to the wineries. Grapes and wine in Texas are a $13 billion dollar industry. That’s a big number. We’re definitely on the vertical portion of the economic hockey stick, but we have a hard time exceeding local demand! The challenge is how to get more grapevines into the ground. Texas needs not the current 6,000 acres, but twice that, 12,000 to 15,000 acres. If I can live long enough to see that, it will solve our problems, and we’ll have enough wine to export.
