ASTROS ON TOP OF THE WORLD.
The Astros have done it! They’ve brought the World Series “Commissioner’s Trophy” home to Houston, sending fans into rapturous joy on Saturday evening, November 5th, at a packed Minute Maid Park. All around the city, fans were glued to TV screens, willing their team on to success. This was the culmination of a fantastic postseason for the Astros, with a 11 - 2 record which began with a 3-game sweep against the Seattle Mariners, followed by a 4-game sweep of our fiercest rivals, the New York Yankees. These wins brought us to the best-of-7 Series against the surprise team of the season, the Philadelphia Phillies, for the top prize.
But Game 1 didn’t go as planned. Despite the Astros commanding a 5-0 lead, the Phillies fought back to claim a 6-5 win. Game 2 was a 5-2 victory for the Astros, and then in Game 3, Philadelphia took a decisive 7-0 win at home. And yet, the Astros were not deterred, and the team showed why they are worthy champions, coming up with 2 crucial victories on the road—a 5-0 Game 4, the first combined no-hitter in postseason history, and then a gritty 3-2 performance in Game 5, the highlight being “that” catch at the wall by Philadelphia native Chas McCormick in the bottom of the 8th. The teams returned to Houston, where a win in Game 6 would clinch the Series. It was a tight affair, with Framber Valdez on the mound. The game remained scoreless until the 6th inning, when the Phillies took a 1-0 lead. But then, it happened in the bottom of the inning—with 2 men on base, Yordan Álvarez launched a 450-foot home run to make it 3-1, a superb hit that went some way to repaying his recently signed $115 million, 6-year contract. This was followed by an insurance run, with a Christian Vazquez RBI single that allowed Alex Bregman to score. The Astros bullpen, which had been virtually unhittable in the postseason, completed the job.
An ecstatic Dusty Baker finally added a World Series win to his resume after 25 years as an MLB manager that includes over 2,000 wins with 5 different clubs. And Jeremy Peña, the 25-year-old rookie shortstop, was named the World Series Most Valuable Player, a magnificent achievement for a player on a team chock full of talent.
This is the 5th time the Astros have reached the World Series, but more impressive is the fact that this is the 4th time they have achieved this feat in the last 6 years! It cannot be overstated how strong the Astros have become in the baseball world over the past few seasons —World Series Champions in 2017, followed by World Series appearances in 2019, 2021, and of course, 2022. When Jim Crane purchased the Astros franchise in November 2011 for a reported $680 million, nobody would have predicted what was going to happen over the following decade. Crane began by reinvigorating the farm system which had been one of the weakest in baseball to that point. His efforts eventually bore fruit, with the emergence of superstars like José Altuve, Alex Bregman, George Springer, Carlos Correa, and more recently, Jeremy Peña. Some commentators are starting to use the word “dynasty” when talking about the current period in the Astros history. It’s been successful era bar none for the club. And although we want this success to continue indefinitely, every fan will be cherishing this moment in Astros history. Wherever you were that Saturday evening to witness this fabulous team as they clinched their second World Series, it’s sure that great memories were being made. The dream continues!
Go ‘Stros.! By John Tack

Bring on the Joy!
December 2022 PUBLISHER
Tonya Butler | tonya.butler@citylifestyle.com PUBLICATION DIR ECTOR
Laura L. Green | laura.green@citylifestyle.com
This truly is the most wonderful time of the year! There’s a joy and enchantment that can’t be matched. It’s a time of year that we’re meant to savor our special relationships and focus on what is real. The challenge of the holiday season is to not lose sight of what it’s all about because we’re so busy decorating, rushing around to finish buying gifts, or trying to fit into our schedules the abundance of activities that we tell ourselves are required. Sometimes, we end up checking boxes instead of simply enjoying. It’s easy to say “simplify,” but it can be oh-so-hard to make that happen! This December, our family goal is to curate our Christmas experiences— focus on the traditions we cherish most, and then try a few that are new. With our son already out of the house and our daughter graduating this year, every moment we all spend together seems more precious than ever. So this year, our foray into the “new” involves spending Christmas out of town on a quiet lake. Who knows, this just might become a yearly event for us! I hope that in your own lives you’re able to find quiet moments that allow you to soak in the majesty and special wonder of Christmas, and that you take advantage of the wealth of opportunities in The Woodlands to celebrate the magic of this time of year with family and friends. In this month’s issue, we highlight special holiday events and distinctive gifts that will help to make the season bright. We’re also sharing stories that underscore the importance of reaching out, sharing traditions, and finding ways to give back to those who need a hand. As the year comes to a close, the team at The Woodlands City Lifestyle would like to express its gratitude to the people of The Woodlands area. We appreciate the overwhelming support and positive feedback that we receive from you throughout the year. Please continue to reach out to us with your story ideas and to support the local businesses that make our community so special. We offer our sincerest wish to you and yours for a happy holiday season. Whatever your faith and traditions, may this be the best celebration ever!

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF A WISH COME TRUE 22
G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
A 1980 photo of Tommy Austin with Chris Greicius, the child who inspired the founding of Make-A-Wish
Wishes are a foundational element of many childhood fairy tales, but they’re by no means childish. The prospect of a wish coming true can help someone summon the will to keep going, to find a path through the darkness, to find a strength they didn’t know they had. Granting the wish of a child who has a critical illness is more than just a nice thing to do. It can change the dynamic of treatment, says Brian Smith, director of communications and marketing for the Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana chapter of Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that has spent decades making wishes a reality for children across the U.S. and the world. “The great thing about Make-A-Wish is that all operations are geared to local work and involvement,” says Shelly Millwee, chief mission and strategy officer for the Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana chapter. “Everything we do in our chapter is for the kids in those areas. When someone volunteers or donates to Make-A-Wish, they’re impacting kids they see at the store, sit next to at church, and wave to on the street each day. The impact is local.” Shelly says that right now in Montgomery County, around 135 children are waiting for wishes to be granted.
Make-A-Wish was founded as the result of the desire to help a little boy in Arizona experience his life-long dream of becoming a law enforcement officer. It was 1980, and 7-yearold Christopher Greicius had been diagnosed with leukemia. Through serendipitous circumstances he became close friends with U.S. Customs Agent Tommy Austin. Tommy, who lives in The Woodlands, has travelled across the U.S. and the world in support of the organization that he helped to found and now serves as director emeritus of the Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana chapter. He recalls a fateful evening when Chris’s mother brought him over to see Tommy and his wife. “He was gray, his teeth were chattering, his hands were shaking. I knew it was close.” He was determined to make Chris’s dream of becoming a law officer come true. No one had ever done what Tommy and his law enforcement friends were envisioning. Yet they kept asking. Putting aside possible legal ramifications and cutting through the red tape, the Arizona Department of Public Safety agreed to help, making Chris an “officer for a day” with all the trimmings. When Tommy called Chris to tell him what was going to happen. “His little voice was barely audible.” But something

switched on inside of him when Tommy described what Chris was going to get to do—meet with the director of the Arizona DPS, receive a badge during a swearing-in ceremony, and take a ride in a DPS helicopter. All of a sudden, his entire demeanor changed, says Tommy. The morning of the ride, Chris called Tommy bright and early. “’I cleaned up my room, made my bed, had my shower. I’m ready to go!’ He was in the driveway when I pulled up. Ear-to-ear smile!” This child who had been diagnosed with only a few days to live was transformed, says Tommy. Just how powerful a wish can be is revealed in a 2022 study funded by Make-A-Wish and conducted by an independent firm that surveyed more than 3,400 participants including healthcare providers, wish kids and their parents, and Make-A-Wish volunteers. “One hundred percent of medical providers said the wish experience provides a child with improved emotional well-being. 98 percent said it improves a child’s physical well-being. 95 percent of parents said the wish brought the family closer together, and 95 percent of wish kids said the experience helped them overcome feelings of sadness--they felt more hopeful about the future after their wish was granted. Shelly says wish requests run the gamut of possibilities: special trips, backyard playgrounds, shopping sprees, becoming a superhero, a fireman--or a police officer, just as Chris Greicius wished. Though some wish kids suffer from terminal illnesses, over 70 percent live into adulthood. A significant number go on to become Make-A-Wish volunteers themselves, says Shelly. The code that law enforcement officers live by is to “never give up, no matter what. You never desert your partner, even unto death, and Chris was going to be my partner,” says Tommy Austin. Chris’s wish was granted on a Monday, and “Chris wasn’t supposed to live through Tuesday.” The wish helped him survive for 11 more precious days. December is a critical time in the non-profit world. “Fifty-two percent of all charitable giving happens this month,” says Shelly. To underscore the importance of the holiday season, Shelly says that Make-A-Wish is presenting “24 Days of Wishes,” each day highlighting a child whose wish has been granted and how the experience has shaped their future. “This month we’re sharing the uplifting force of these stories and how Make-A-Wish affects everyone in the community These are stories we can all rally around-the difficulties, the hope, the strength, and the joy.” The power of a wish is changing lives right here in The Woodlands area, says Shelly. For more information about Make-A-Wish Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana, visit wish.org/texgulf.

ACTS OF KINDNESS CARING AND SHARING IN BIG AND SMALL WAYS THROUGHOUT MONGTOMERY COUNTY
28
I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE
Despite the challenges of 2022, our friends, neighbors, and total strangers have proven that goodness is alive and well in The Woodlands. Acts of kindness in many varieties have touched innumerable lives, and we are happy to share some of the most heartwarming stories of the season. A third-grade student, a Conroe ISD Superintendent, a beloved business owner, a wellknown philanthropist, and a lieutenant with the Mounted Patrol all weigh in, each with a different perspective of what it means to give and receive. Some are the recipients of kindness and generosity, and others are the benefactors. How awesome to celebrate the power of paying it forward and reaping blessings through the actions of bighearted people in our community.
MISSY HERNDON President and CEO of Interfaith of The Woodlands
Missy Herndon, Founder of the The Will Herndon Research Fund and President and CEO of Interfaith of The Woodlands.
Jo Anne Johnson of Jo Anne Johnson Real Estate Group
Missy Herndon has been a volunteer, wife, and mother for decades. Yet giving back and championing causes hardly prepared her for the news that her firstborn son, only six years old at the time, had Juvenile Batten disease. There was no treatment, no cure, and the prognosis was fatal. “My husband Wayne and I and other parents set out to find a treatment within our children’s lifetimes. Yet, it was difficult to ask for help,” says Missy. “Our hearts were in giving mode, and it was surreal to be on the other end of the equation.” People like her friend and neighbor, Jo Anne Johnson of the Jo Anne Johnson Real Estate Group, were quick to step forward with innovative ways to fundraise for Will. A percentage of sales from Jo Anne’s initiative, HOPE Homes, supports the Will Herndon Research Fund, a.k.a. HOPE (willherndon.org), which was founded in 2009. It’s an extra stream of revenue for research, and the HOPE yard signs raise awareness. Missy has witnessed other acts of kindness in her role at Interfaith of The Woodlands and Interfaith Community Clinic. She began serving in 2012 as Director of Programs and Services and became President and CEO in 2016. People respond when the food pantry runs low, kids set up lemonade stands to raise funds, people donate to the Hand Me Up Shop and participate in school supply drives, and volunteers work at Veggie Village and community donation gardens. All efforts support Interfaith services.
JO ANNE JOHNSON
Few companies are as philanthropy-minded as the Jo Anne Johnson Real Estate Group. Jo Anne believes in the faith-based principle “Give where you live.” She views her business as a ministry, and every member of her team supports a charity. “We owe it to others to give back,” she says, “and we measure our charity dollars as the company grows.” Expanding on Missy Herndon’s story, Jo Anne recalls when Will Herndon received his devastating diagnosis of a rare degenerative brain disease. Will was the same age as her daughter, just six years old, and Jo Anne wanted to help. Will’s parents founded The Will Herndon Research Fund, also known as HOPE, and Jo Anne initiated HOPE Homes to support research for a cure. Her team finds homes in need of renovations, revitalizes them, and is excited when they spring back to life. “A percentage of sales from these homes goes to Will’s foundation, which improves our community one house at a time and supports our dear friends,” says Jo Anne. Fast forward to today, and the Herndons have been world changers through their grassroots efforts to highlight a little-known disease. Will is now eighteen years old, and HOPE Homes is blessed to support him and others with Juvenile Battens. Jo Anne and her tight-knit group are involved in numerous other charities, with the motto: “A team that volunteers together stays together.” Taking care of others and helping people move forward is foundational to their mission.

LIEUTENANT MIKE HEIMER
LIEUTENANT MIKE HEIMER
Alpha & Omega Mounted Patrol We see them on horseback wearing red shirts and providing security and assistance within The Woodlands Township. The Mounted Patrol is a visible deterrent to crime but also forges a special bond with the community year-round. Lieutenant Mike Heimer has been riding for 20 years and notes the number of people who have never seen a horse close up. He enjoys introducing curious onlookers to his mare Nosey and gelding Outlaw. “By now, the horses have received pats on the neck and posed for hundreds of photos with those who live nearby or are visiting from all over the world,” he says. The Township contracts with Alpha & Omega, and most troopers own and personally care for their horses. It’s an ”all hands on deck” effort by the Heimer family. The Lieutenant’s daughter, Jennifer, works at the Sheriff’s Department and part-time for the Mounted Patrol. His 7th-grade granddaughter, Mikki Gassett, helps care for the horses. It takes a special kind of equine for this line of work, and all are tested for suitability. Obstacles, maneuvers, sensory tolerance, and formations for crowd control are part of the training. Ultimately, the horses help move ambulances and firetrucks through crowds, reunite lost shoppers with family members, help locate cars in parking lots (a common occurrence), and perform other good deeds. If you ever spot the Mounted Patrol at The Woodlands Mall, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, the Waterway, or beyond, don’t hesitate to stop and say hello to these goodwill ambassadors!

DR. CURTIS NULL CISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Curtis Null has the best job in the world as CISD Superintendent, with a front-row seat to many acts of kindness. Some stories go viral, such as a giant student-driven school supply and backpack initiative with hundreds of volunteers. A special needs Buckalew Elementary student was cheered on by classmates as he landed basketball at recess, featured on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt: Kids Edition. But other stories are simply quiet examples of students being great human beings. “Every once in a while, you’ll hear someone say, ‘Kids today,’ and sigh or shake their heads. But I’ll tell you that kids today are philanthropic and loving. I wish the world could see what I see.” One of the greatest honors for a school is to be invited to perform by the Texas Music Educators Association. It’s a big moment in a big room, and Dr. Null noticed that one Mitchell Intermediate 5th grader had become overwhelmed. Just as she was nearing the point of no return, a girl next to her reached out and held her hand. It was such a kind gesture, and the struggling girl relaxed and finished the performance. “These little examples happen daily and might not be big news in the world but mean the world to the people involved,” says Dr. Null. He sees staff members anonymously buy books at book fairs and help families who can’t to buy a new pair of shoes. “They work to change their lives.”

Eight-year-old Seth Parsons was on the walking trails at Carl Barton Park with his parents, siblings, and grandmother when he saw a commotion at one of the ponds. Another boy had caught a small turtle with a fishing pole and needed help to free it. Seth leaped into action and managed to dislodge the hook, much to the relief of the turtle and a small crowd of onlookers. Thanks to Seth’s act of kindness, the turtle swam safely away. Seth’s proud dad, Garrett Parsons, a Harris County Precinct 4 Deputy Constable, caught the action with his camera. He notes that it isn’t the first time his kindhearted son has stepped up to help. Seth once came to the aid of a girl who was injured on the playground and escorted her to the nurse’s office. He’s also a big brother to his three-year-old sister Emily and newborn brother Lincoln and cares for the family pet, a chocolate Labrador named Rufus. Seth’s favorite toys are robots, space toys, and police toys. “I want to be a Fire Marshall when I grow up,” he says. When asked why, he explains, “I really like saving people, and I want to be a hero like my dad.” While he waits to grow into his role as a first responder, Seth enjoys studying science and history and playing baseball and flag football. He looks forward to soccer next year and will remain on the lookout for ways to help others. I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

The McCollums, Home for the Holidays After a whirlwind year of touring, recording, winning major industry awards, and marrying the love of his life, Hallie Ray Light, country music superstar Parker McCollum is unplugging his guitar, stepping away from the mic, and heading home for the holidays. The first leg of his much-needed vacation is in Nashville at home with Hallie Ray, where they will be celebrating their first Christmas as a married couple and creating their own family traditions. “We are really excited about Christmas,” said Parker. “We love this time of year. We got some of our first ornaments together last year, and I know collecting ornaments for our tree is something we’ll continue to do.” “We are looking forward to putting Christmas lights up on the house and decorating the tree for the first time as our own family,” added Hallie Ray. “Parker’s tour schedule is slowing down quite a bit, so we can just enjoy each other. He will be spending a lot more time at home, and I think that is the perfect way to spend our first Christmas together as a married couple.” Hallie Ray loves to cook and is also excited about incorporating some of her favorite recipes into their holiday traditions. “Growing up, my sisters and I made Puppy Chow with my mom and snacked on it throughout December. Last year I made a Christmas tree out of garlic cheese balls, and they were so good! I will most likely make those again this year,” she said. Downtime in Nashville may include some Christmas shopping as well, but Parker shared that he already has a lot of that covered. CONTINUED >

“This is the first time in my life that I shopped early. I went shopping for Hallie Ray in October. I felt very grown up doing that,” he said. “But I’m sure there will be some last-minute gifts.” After some shopping, overdue alone time, and catching up on some R & R, the McCollums will be spending the remainder of the holiday season—leg two of their vacation time—in Parker’s hometown, Conroe. “Conroe and this time of year just go together for me. I look forward to this all year long,” Parker said. He has spent every Christmas of his 30 years at his grandmother JoJo’s house, and this year will be no different. Christmas in Conroe means getting to spend time with his mom’s family, the Yancey’s, and his dad’s family, the McCollums, which includes his Meemaw and Papa. Then add all of his aunts, uncles, and

cousins who either still live in the Conroe area or also make their way back for the holidays. It’s a time for reminiscing about his childhood, especially Christmases growing up with his brother Tyler, and sister Michael. “I was the youngest, so I was always up the earliest and would try to get everyone else up. As soon as we’d open all the presents, we’d get to eat my mom’s Christmas breakfast casserole,” he said. He said his mom still makes this breakfast casserole every year. She explained it as something she started making when her kids were babies, and it has evolved over time. “It’s the French bread casserole that you pour eggs, milk, and cheese over, and then you can add whatever else you want. As they got older, I added more to it and it got a little more interesting,” she said. “My mom always did a great job going all out for Christmas, she really did,” said Parker. “Even when we didn’t like it, she made us put the decorations up together and the lights in the yard together—we did it all. That’s probably why I am so fond of this time of year.” Christmas memories in Conroe also include Parker getting his first guitar when he was 10 years old. Yancey bought guitars for both of her boys in 2002 and recalls it was money well spent. “They picked them up and never looked back. That’s the one thing they did that I never had to ask them to practice. They were obsessed after that,” she said. And then there was Parker’s fourth-grade year when the spotlight found him not once but twice. “I took Michael to the Crighton Theatre for an audition,” said Yancey. “Parker and I were sitting and doing his homework when the director came out and said, ‘I’m going to audition him next.’ I told him we just came for my daughter, but they wanted him to audition. The next morning, I got a call, and he got the part of Tommy, the lead boy in ‘Miracle on 34th Street.’” “My sister got a small role without any lines, and I got the lead role for the little kids. I think they just needed a little kid to do it,” added Parker. That same year he played the lead in Giesinger Elementary’s production of “The Nutcracker.” “Yes, they happened simultaneously. But that is the extent of my acting career,” Parker said with a laugh. The holiday season also provides the perfect opportunity for reflecting on the past 12 months and giving thanks for incredible blessings. Parker and Hallie Ray have each had milestone years. Parker toured with country artist Thomas Rhett, opened for his hero George Strait, and recorded a show for Austin City Limits. He had his second national No 1 song, set the all-time record for attendance at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, and sold out the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo—something he had dreamed about since he was a kid. Christmas Day 2002: Parker, holding his first guitar, with sister Michael and brother Tyler.

Parker’s tour schedule is slowing down quite a bit, so we can just enjoy each other. He will be spending a lot more time at home, and I think that is the perfect way to spend our first Christmas together as a married couple.”
“It was so insane to be out there on that stage at NRG. You work for something for as long as you can remember. Then one day, you get off the bus, and you’re doing it. It was really hard to take it all in. I’m glad we’re getting a second chance to do it this next year. I will probably take the day in a lot slower this time and try to enjoy it more,” he said. He also turned a hand injury into a positive 2022 memory. When he couldn’t play guitar, he called on his brother, Tyler, to join his band for a few weeks and play acoustic guitar while he recovered. “That was so cool for me because he was such a big influence on me as a kid and the whole reason I found out about songwriters and learning to play guitar and

doing this for a living. So, to do shows that big and have him there on the road—the vibe was just so good. To have a little bit of home with you on the road is always a good thing,” he said. In 2022, Hallie Ray teamed up with her two sisters, Kamri and Kaylee, to launch their own company, KiHK. “We wanted to start a brand that represented everyday athleisure, combining all three of our styles! The brand name, KiHK, was created from each of our initials with a lowercase “I” to form a word that makes sense,” she said. Hallie Ray and her sisters design their own products by first starting with individual ideas and then combining their concepts into one final product.
A glimpse behind the scenes in the runup to a concert.
“I think that is what makes it so fun, seeing all three creative minds bring one product to life and then getting to share that with our audience. We always strive for our pieces to be trendy and comfortable, making our customers feel and look their best,” she added. In 2023, Hallie Ray and her sisters hope to expand KiHK to reach a larger audience with their stylish athleisure. Parker plans to put out a new album, start a headlining tour, and open the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. But for now, they will cherish the December slowdown, trim the tree, and take in all the holiday season has to offer. — Merry Christmas from the McCollums!

CREATING AN ELEMENTAL SEASONAL AMBIENCE USING ORGANICALLY INSPIRED ART ARTICLE BY ANNETTE PALMER PHOTOGRAPHY BY PRESLEY DANIEL
Winter is upon us, and during the longest nights and coldest months, we aim to relax in comfort and warmth. Bonfires and blankets bring a cozy contentment that only comes with the crisp chill of winter. The Scandinavian term “hygge” is used to describe such a lifestyle of “comfortable conviviality.” The organic elements of stone, clay, wax, and wood are abundant and ancient. I visited four environmentally responsive artists in Montgomery County to learn about how they work with these materials in the present day.
SHAUNA MARTIN Wax is one of the more unusual materials used in today’s art scene, yet a very natural element. Encaustic artist Shauna Martin uses beeswax and damar resin to create dreamy, ethereal works upon which we embark into a journey of sepias and vintage monochromes, reminiscent of early photography practices. One form of art is sublimely influenced by another. Shauna is also an educator in photography, and other inspirations include deep thoughts of epistemology and epigenetics, the belief that we are a product of our environments and can change ourselves by changing our surroundings. The encaustic technique has many stages and begins with a base of pure birchwood, Shauna uses heat to fuse

and melt layers of wax, resin, oil paint, and coconut oil, and then pours, stains, paints, and seals with heat and fire. Using textured components such as fabric and tissue paper results in unplanned details. Fragments of thread and paper gone awry are left where they settle, as Shauna likes to “embrace the happenings.” Shauna is a member artist of Da Vinci Gallery in Tomball and is involved in gallery representation in Colorado.
MICHELE VOTANO After collecting and selecting rocks and stones locally and from further afield, Michele Votano hand chisels and crafts them into components for her unique sculptural pieces. A desire for a large stone cross above her mantle led to a passion shared with many churches and clients who appreciate the beauty of her work.
A wall piece, featuring an amethyst center
Michele Votano with one of her artworks
The process is a difficult journey. Adhesives and glazes have to be hand mixed in order to work well with the differing porous and polished surfaces. Limestone, sandstone, and river rocks are coordinated with semi-precious amethysts and quartzes, which radiate from the center in a kaleidoscopic “burst of faith.” These crosses are inspired by the stories and lives of people Michele meets, family members, and her own spirituality. Showing her work in The Woodlands at Market Street Art Shows, she finds that people immediately connect with certain pieces which inspire them. She explains, “The crosses find their own homes with people who see the same beauty I see.” This work is truly born of hope, love, gratitude, faith, and remembrance and is made from one of the most ancient elements Earth has to offer. In addition to crosses, Michele has recently added flowers and angels to her unique collectibles. You can keep up with her @michelevotano on Instagram.

LARRY ZARRA Artisan woodturner Larry Zarra seeks out fallen trees and logs to form into unique sculptural vases and vessels. Embracing the naturally formed splits, cracks, and holes results in creations with an honesty that only comes from such an organic approach. Working with “green” wood, he seeks to tell the story, the life of the tree. The rings and rays emanating from the central pith add interest and intrigue. The challenge of working with “spalting” wood, where bacteria and fungi have discolored, but not rotted, the wood, adds an element of excitement. There are many surprises in this practice, with turned pieces having a marble-like finish, of which every piece is different. Influenced by the style of southwestern pottery, Larry recreates their forms and shapes. Every piece is hand-turned on a lathe, varnished, waxed and hand-buffed for an exquisite finish. Recent experimentation with different stains and finishes includes using black stain on carved wood or working with the Japanese technique of shou sugi ban. The wood is burned to char the veneer, another way of achieving a black finish, and gives Larry’s latest pieces a modern, contemporary edge. Larry has been a master of his art for 27 years and is a member artist of Da Vinci Gallery in Tomball.

CAROL BERGER Sourcing clay along Montgomery County’s riverbanks is all part of the artistic process for ceramic artist Carol Berger. After digging and then cleaning the raw or wild clay, she works with it as is or mixes it with other clays for different properties. Carol also enjoys working with porcelain, a more refined material but very unforgiving to use. An avid eco-responsible artist, she uses naturally discarded elements in her work, such as horse hair, feathers, banana peels, cow manure, and seaweed. All contribute to creating surface colors and patterns, using a barrel or pit firing method where the work is packed with sawdust, and set alight for a lengthy smolder before revealing the alchemy that has occurred. Carol is currently working toward an upcoming solo exhibition at Archway Gallery in Houston, inspired by the sounds of water, another natural

element ever present in the clay and also used in the construction process. These works emanate water’s meditative sounds using hand-built rain sticks, chimes, and other functional and sculptural pieces. A recent exhibition explored purity with a contemporary feel in her germination series. “The porcelain had no glazing, was sanded smooth and was perfectly white,” Carol stated. Her love of clay and enthusiasm is shared by teaching private classes from her studio as well as showing work at Archway Gallery, The Conroe Art League, and directly from her website. Bringing these naturally sourced artworks into our living spaces creates an environment with a fundamental component, a feeling of contentment, satisfaction, and being at one with our place in nature. Think of it as snug, or a hibernation, or a relaxing fulfillment for the transition of the year, where we can acknowledge the old and welcome the new.

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

Working for You
Carol Knott Tefft was phenomenal to work with! My house was only on the market for 6 days. She went out of her way to help me close f rom a distance. I’ve also worked with Carol on a few other sales, and a few rentals. Carol’s honesty has led me to some great real estate decisions. Most Realtors have become complacent and lazy in the internet age, but Carol still provides the great level of hometown service everyone loves. She always answers the phone and greets you with a smile. Keep up the good work Carol!”
