MULTIGENERATIONAL HOMES ARE GETTING HOMEBUILDERS ATTENTION
MULTIPLE FAMILY GENERATIONS LIVING UNDER THE SAME ROOF CAN BE EASIER THAN IT SEEMS WITH A NEW HOMEBUILDING TREND DESIGNED TO KEEP FAMILIES TOGETHER IN ALL STAGES OF LIFE. It’s what’s called a multigenerational homeand Village Builders were the first to offer a Next Gen design in Houston, but more are catching on. “It’s becoming more popular as the cost of skilled care and independent living is on the rise,” says Realtor Carol Knott Tefft. “It is a fairly new

grandparents who live far away. This concept keeps families seamlessly connected. “It seems to strike a balance between convenience and assistance,” Carol says. In recent years, a record 64 million people— roughly 20 percent of the country’s population— reported living in a multigenerational home. Buyers choose multigenerational homes for different reasons. Some want to keep a close watch on their aging parents’ health or safety. Some young families might need a grandparent around to help with small children. Still others might want a living space for working-aged children who might be in a transition between college and career. The extra space can even come in handy when extended family members decide to visit. “In a lot of cases you design it to fit your lifestyle,” Carol says. Designs can be simple or complex. chance at life and in return receive companionship, comfort and love. “I think most people believe that cats are sneaky, loners, uncaring and self-centered,” Patricia says. “Well, yes, all of that is true, but they also have a sense of humor and built-in curiosity.” Patricia writes about SugarBear, a stray brown manx, who one day sashayed her way into Patricia’s home and claimed a spot in her sunroom. SugarBear was also known to lounge on the roof and play peek-a-boo. She was a sassy, but tough street cat who once survived a fierce storm that took down trees and knocked out Patricia’s electricity. After Patricia learned about the book, she got in touch with Kelly. The two friends met at their Creekside-neighborhood book club and shared cat-rescue stories. In the book, Kelly writes about her cat Loki who she rescued after finding him with a damaged tooth, missing patches of fur and a BB-gun bullet lodged in his ear. Kelly took Loki for medical treatment, bathed him daily to heal a horrible skin condition and slowly nursed him back to health. “He went from this scrappy little disgusting-looking thing, to this plump, loving affectionate cat,” Kelly says. Loki would cuddle and comfort Kelly, who at the time was struggling emotionally as her youngest daughter prepared to leave for college. Caring for poor Loki provided a welcome distraction, Kelly says. Both writers hope their stories and the book as a whole can help others realize the value cats bring to our everyday lives. They help their owners cope with illnesses or provide solace during trying times. “The whole theme of the book,” Kelly says. “Is how cats really rescue the humans. Not really humans rescuing the cats.” “Second Chance Cats” is available for purchase online and at bookstores.

IN THE WOODLANDS, BRIDGELAND AND THE WOODLANDS HILLS FOR NATIONAL TRAILS MONTH THE HOWARD HUGHES CORPORATION IS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING ACCESS TO NATURE FOR RESIDENTS WITHIN ITS AWARD-WINNING MASTER PLANNED COMMUNITIES OF THE WOODLANDS, BRIDGELAND AND THE WOODLANDS HILLS, HAVING CONSTRUCTED OVER 300 MILES OF TRAILS. During the month of June when the nation celebrated National Trails and Great Outdoors Month, the Howard Hughes team set a goal to walk, jog and bike the 300+ miles of trails in its communities. The end result – the team achieved the goal six fold, covering 1,769 miles. “We are devoted to promoting an active lifestyle in our communities, and this is evident in our hike-and-bike trails. To understand the extent of our nature trails, walking the full length of the nature trails we offer residents within our communities is the equivalent of traveling from The Woodlands, Texas to Baton Rouge, Louisiana,” said Jim Carman, President – Houston Region for Howard Hughes. “Our employees and their families enjoy these amenities as well, and trekked 1,769 miles during the month of June, an equivalent of a trip to New York City!” The Woodlands, a leader in environmental preservation, offers 28% of dedicated green space through its 220 miles of trails, 148 parks, seven championship golf courses and greenbelts. Nature trails link neighborhoods to local village centers, parks, schools, places of worship, employment and more. Also located in The Woodlands is the award-winning George Mitchell Nature Preserve that connects and protects up to 12,000 acres of forest on both sides of Spring Creek with miles of linear trails for hiking, bicycling, as well as canoeing. Located in Cypress, Bridgeland currently features 70 miles of trails and will have over 250 miles upon completion, connecting pedestrians and bicyclists to various places of interest which include schools, village retail centers, and activity centers. Still three years young, The Woodlands Hills, a forested master planned community north of The Woodlands in Conroe and Willis, will eventually feature 112 acres of open space and currently includes miles of hike-and-bike trails. The Woodlands Hills is the first master planned community in Montgomery County to offer dedicated bicycle lanes along major thoroughfares to assist in the community’s connectivity. With an abundance of open space and 300+ miles of nature trails, The Woodlands, Bridgeland and The Woodlands Hills invite all to take advantage of the great outdoors. 30

BALANCED NUTRITION LEADS TO HEALTHY KIDS Feeding your child a variety of foods is the key to getting them many different types of nutrients. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can help your child fight off illnesses. HEALTHY EATING AS CHILDREN EQUALS HEALTHY EATING AS ADULTS When little kids learn to eat fruits and vegetables at an early age, they are more likely to continue eating healthy foods as adults. Kids, especially kids who may be picky or selective, often like a little bit of novelty.
MAKE SNACKS AND MEALTIME FUN We all know that kids like to play and have fun, so why not make food fun? Whether you’re turning broccoli into a microphone at dinner, or playing tic-tac-toe with edible carrot sticks, kids get into it. DON’T GIVE UP Parents often assume that if a child doesn’t eat a food the first or second time it’s served, the child doesn’t like the food. Many children may need to see or taste a food 10 or 20 times before they are willing to eat it. FORCING HEALTHY FOODS ON KIDS OFTEN BACKFIRES Often, making a child eat food or eat a certain amount of food backfires. It may backfire in the short run by making a child more selective and less likely to eat the foods you want them to eat.

Lola’s Lucky Day is completely volunteer-led, runs entirely on donations and these days is busier than ever. Daily, overcrowded animal shelters email Larissa begging her to accept dogs slated for euthanasia. Other times, residents ask her to take in strays. Those wanting to help Lola’s Lucky Day can

their heads, and drove them to her boss’s house. Her boss and his family were looking for a new puppy to adopt, and Larissa hoped she could help at least one pup find a forever home. She did. The family chose a puppy from the litter and named her Lola. Larissa likes to say it was Lola’s lucky break in life going from living under a house to a loving family with children. Since then, Larissa and her team have rescued more than 7,500 dogs from desperate situations. Her group, now the non-profit Lola’s Lucky Day, focuses on preparing homeless dogs for adoption and transporting them to new owners halfway across the country . While most animal adoption efforts are focused on re-homing pets locally, Larissa, a Wisconsin native, helps place dogs in Wisconsin cities where animal overpopulation is not as severe. Wisconsin shelters approve adoptions while Larissa’s team focuses on rehabilitating the dogs. “We just kind of say ‘it’s your lucky day’ when the dogs come into the program,” she says. The lucky dogs get much-needed vaccinations, spaying or neutering, microchipping and medical treatments before their journey to placement shelters. Then, a team of volunteers shuttles the dogs halfway to Wisconsin. They stop in Pocahontas, Arkansas where a team
