40 YEARS OF LANDSCAPE DESIGN & HORTICULTURE AND STILL GOING

FORTY YEARS AGO, SHAWN MICHAEL KELLY STEPPED OUT OF HIS EL CAMINO DRESSED IN GYM SHORTS AND A TANK TOP. He’d just graduated with two degrees and started his own landscaping company. As a one-man-band, Shawn did everything from designing structures to shoveling dirt, but when he showed up to clients’ homes he was often met with shock. They’d say, “where’s your crew?” And I’d say, “unless you grab a shovel, you’re looking at it, I’m your crew.” Since then, Shawn has picked up a highly skilled crew, completed countless jobs, and established an award-winning landscape-design firm called Mirror Lake Designs. The company specializes in creating livable, outdoor spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and practical. Standing at 6-foot-4 with thick silvery hair, he tours his show gardens on a balmy afternoon and tells stories about how it all started. Shawn – who has dual Texas A&M degrees in horticulture and landscape architecture – fuses his architectural mind and understanding of plant life to create masterful gardens, eye-catching pools, and lavish outdoor kitchens.

LOCALLY OWNED (CONTINUED)

“Most horticulturalists are not really great at design and most landscape architects don’t really know plants,” Shawn says. “I ended up with both.” This spring, Shawn and his wife, Belinda, celebrate Mirror Lake’s fortieth year in business. Through economic downturns, big jobs and small jobs – and most recently a reduction of business due to COVID-19 – passion keeps them going. That and a crew of loyal craftsmen, some of whom have worked with Shawn for more than 25 years. “It’s not just a vocation, it’s an advocation,” Shawn says. “We love it. When I’m on vacation, I’m looking at fountains. I’m looking at pools thinking ‘that’s interesting. How do they do that?’ It never goes away, but I love doing it.” Shawn’s headquarters is a six-acre property of intricate show gardens, gurgling streams, and soothing ponds. Clients can stroll the pathways and choose structures or plants they enjoy. Shawn gets to know his client’s wants and helps them create a space where they can talk, cook and appreciate human connections. With more people quarantining at home, Shawn believes many have changed their perspective. “A lot of people are prioritizing what’s important to them,” he says. “They miss the

face-to-face,

real

conversations

where you’re talking or hugging...You can’t replace that. They want to build places that will help enhance the experience and allow that to happen.” Shawn is an equal part builder and artist. His office is adorned with abstract paintings and plant books. He drafts up landscaping designs often accompanied by libations and Jimmy Buffet tunes. And when it comes to Mirror Lake’s future, he’s nowhere near done building. MirrorLakeDesigns.com

“I AM A BIG BELIEVER THAT YOU SHOULD LOVE ALL THE ITEMS IN YOUR HOME.”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN INTERIOR DESIGN? HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START? 2006, I was hired by an interior designer here in The Woodlands and began as her assistant and salesperson for her store which was located in Market Street. I learned so much from her in this position and I was also introduced to many people with whom I still do business today. From that point, my role changed within the industry working for an art gallery, a design showroom, and

SPECIAL SPACES (CONTINUED)

WHAT KINDS OF CLIENTS DO YOU ENJOY WORKING WITH? I love the opportunity to build relationships with each of my clients. It is this rapport that helps me provide each homeowner with recommendations and products that make sense for their home. The process of a designer home is very fluid. There are a lot of decisions that must be made, and one choice always affects another. My job is to guide each client towards the right decisions for them without the process becoming overwhelming. HOW DO YOU WORK WITH A CLIENT TO DEFINE THEIR NEEDS? WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU ASK TO DETERMINE THE FINAL LOOK AND FEEL OF A SPACE? For many of my clients, this is a once in a lifetime project to create their dream home. I try to make it as enjoyable as possible. How I differentiate myself from other designers is the truly custom experience through the design process. Rarely are selections repeated from one house to another. Each family is unique and deserves its own design. I have designed homes for young families, for families upsizing, for families “right-sizing” (our positive spin on downsizing) for growing families, as well as empty nesters and retirees. Each stage of life has its own obstacles, and the functionality of the house is usually where the bulk of the change lies. When there is more than one decision-maker, I like to ask each of them to write down separately what they each want for their home. From specific requests to an overall feeling of the home. I also ask for what they know they don’t want or like. Many people don’t always know what they want, but

UNCOMMON ARCHITECTURE IN THE WOODLANDS

OFF THE BEATEN PATH, HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT ARE A FEW SAMPLES OF UNUSUAL ARCHITECTURE RIGHT HERE IN THE WOODLANDS! One such property we were recently made aware of is the old Peace Palace tucked away in Grogan’s Mill by Timberloch Lake. Dedicated to the art of Transcendental Meditation this intricately crafted building is right across from Glade Gallery and is designed in a style known as Maharishi Vedic Architecture. The structure is a modern interpretation of the ancient system of Vedic Architecture devised to bring peace, harmony, and success to life by aligning the living environment with nature utilizing natural building materials, great precision, and proportionality. The all-masonry exterior façade is constructed with only two materials - natural clay brick and white marble-based cast stone. Closer observation reveals a symphony of detail with elaborate motifs in the cast stone, ornamentation of multiple level columns, each with decorative bases including lotus flowers, keystones, and Vedic patterns. The layout of the building interestingly follows the sun through the sky. The Peace Palace was sold in 2016 to Boxer Properties and is now an office space consisting of co-working areas with dedicated desk spaces, and a variety of uniquely configured executive suites. The next time you are in the area, take a moment to visit this unique building and appreciate the architecture we have in our little community in the woods! CityLifestyle.com/TheWoodlands
