CONGRATULATIONS PARKER! In a sold-out concert at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on October 2, 2021, Parker McCollum set a record for the most tickets sold by a country artist in The Pavilion’s 31-year history. The show marked a true homecoming for Parker, as he grew up in The Woodlands and graduated from high school on the very stage where he played for his record-breaking performance. Parker was gracious enough to be the cover story for our premiere issue back in November 2020. So much has happened in a year, and The Woodlands Lifestyle recently caught up with the country music sensation to find out what it means to him to experience a sold-out performance in his own hometown: “You know, every single night I played to an empty bar, or I would sit in silence and just swear to myself that everything I was doing would be worth it and would pay off one day–it all paid off on Saturday night! It was absolutely worth it. Every high, every low, was sooooo worth it… to come home, to set the record at that venue, and have my family there meant the absolute world to me. I could not have drawn it up any better. That’s exactly what I thought I would do one day when I left town. I graduated high school in 2011, and 10 days later moved to Austin to chase this dream. It took me 10 years to come back to do something like that. Every single little “everything” that I was blessed to do, and went through–and had to do–was one hundred percent worth it.!”

Check out Parker’s website for current tour dates, newest release and his latest merchandise.

HAVING AN IMPROMPTU GATHERING? Setting a stylish table is still doable, even on short notice. Entertaining is all about conveying warmth and conviviality in a way that’s all your own, said Allison Dale, owner of Laurie’s Home Furnishings, known for its beautiful vignettes that make it easy to visualize how a piece will look in your home. Dale said incorporating unique designs and home décor pieces will impress guests and reflect your personal style. Since most holiday events center around a special meal, careful consideration of your table will help set the tone and make guests feel relaxed and comfortable. + Be sure to plan every item that will be needed during the meal. The table should include all the things you will need to serve your guests, from glassware to serveware, from plates to candlesticks. + Layer your design to create depth and special appeal. Using rich, warmer hues and luxurious textures will help reflect the festive vibe inherent in the season. + Conversations flow during a meal, so be sure to have a few unique pieces on the table that will inspire that interaction.

Tables are a place for gathering, for serving and for sharing. With a little planning, your table will welcome guests to relax and stay awhile.

THE PROS BRING OUT THEIR BEST TIPS FOR AUTUMN TABLETOP DECOR

Ornate serveware, fine linens, and tapered candles create a warm intimacy at the table.

If you find yourself looking for the perfect utensil, a hard-to-find specialty tool, or a unique seasonal item to add flair to your table this holiday season, Sur La Tab can meet all of your gastronomic needs. “We pride ourselves on being experts when it comes to everything in the world of cooking and entertaining, and we want to reduce holiday stress,” said Market Street store manager Anjanette Langford. Colorful 100% linen napkins offer greater durability and wrinkle-resistance. Fortessa Ashton gold flatware is available in 5- or 20-piece place settings.

Whatever your celebration style, Sur La Tab offers these easy tips to set the perfect tablescape to impress: + Incorporate lighting such as candles or a strand of wireless mini-lights to add instant ambience and sparkle. + Mix and match the table linens. Different textures and colors create more interest. + Accessorize with a centerpiece and decorations, but don't overdo it. You don't want the table to feel cluttered. + Invest in a traditional, classic place setting that you can count on year after year. Sur la Tab suggests its original, turkey-themed earthenware, which is durable and dishwasher safe. Pair with the store’s signature Pearl collection of vintage-inspired stoneware that's carried throughout the year,” said Langford.

Set a gracious autumn table with wood-grain chargers, chip and cloud-resistant Schott Zweisel stemware, and a festive Staub pumpkin cocotte.

Woman Behind The Wheel Dealership Owner Elizabeth Samuels is a Driving Force in the Family Auto Business A visit to Joe Myers Kia means more than simply finding your next vehicle. Step inside Elizabeth Samuel’s dealership, and you’ll experience a genuinely familyrun business, where each day Elizabeth works alongside her husband Ralph, sharing the roles of managing partner and general manager. The couple’s three sons have been a part of the dealership for many years, and many employees have been working there for decades—something that’s unusual in the automobile business. It’s a place that runs on a knowledge, experience and a commitment to unparalleled service. The husband-and-wife team have made many trips to South Korea in order to immerse themselves in the Kia production process, even sitting in during the initial design phase of several new models—all in order to understand, top to bottom, the quality and precision that go into creating the vehicles they sell and service back home on their showroom floor. Where else can you buy a car from someone who was there when the concept for it was created? Elizabeth grew up in the Houston area, and as a young girl, she developed her love and knowledge of automobiles, a passion that was instilled in her by her father. Her fond memories of working with cars ultimately turned into a career, and she’s never looked back. “I went to work at Joe Myers in 1985--a 36-year association and a continuing, rewarding and unique experience with all of the ongoing challenges facing us all today,” Elizabeth said.

16484 Northwest Freeway

|

That deep commitment to lasting relationships came to the forefront during the height of the pandemic last year, when team members at the dealership were assured by the Samuels that their jobs were secure. “I always feel that if you treat people the right way, things will always work out just fine,” said Elizabeth. Taking care of their KIA family is part of who she and Robert are, she said. “It’s very rewarding to work with and have fun with our team members, the majority having been with us for many years.” Outside of the dealership setting, Elizabeth is a leader in the community, putting her boundless energy and good will to work for organizations such as Boys and Girls Country and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The dealership also supports several community sports teams. She and Robert fund The Greg Samuel Everyday Hero Foundation, which facilitates local giving and initiatives throughout the year, including a jacket and blanket drive each winter. When Joe Myers KIA recently received a 25-Year Dealer Service Award from KIA, Elizabeth could not have been more excited. For her, the award is emblematic of her love for the industry and the people who work side-byside with her every day. It takes a family to make you feel like family when you’re buying a car, and that’s the commitment that she, Robert and the rest of the team at Joe Myers KIA have made to their customers.

his friend Kevin Black are the creators of the book, and it’s been a long journey to get to this stretch of road. Clements and Black met in the early 2000’s, when Clements photographed Black performing with his two brothers at Minute Maid Park. Not long after, Clements retired from his career at Exxon Mobil and began to pursue his love of photography. He also reconnected with Black, who was looking for someone to manage his music career. Then, in 2003, Black’s daughter Cortney died at the age of 16. Cortney had been born with Rett syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects approximately one in 10,000 girls each year, with cases rarer among male children. Symptoms of Rett usually become apparent at around 12 to 24 months

thought Clements, a book filled with photos of musical artists, taken by Clements and Black. They envisioned a sort “music festival between two covers,” recalled Black, a book that people would want for the book itself, instead of as a trinket in return for a donation. “Here is something for you. Something you can value and keep. Something people can hold onto,” Clements said of the concept. “Dave recognized that all artists had something in common. They’re really animated with their hands and arms when they perform,” recalled Black. Clements said that when he was growing up, raising a hand meant helping someone. GIVING VOICE TO SILENT ANGELS (CONTINUED)

“Dave was the impetus. He’s relentless. If he gets a no, he wants to know why,” said Black. A turning point came when

The original "Raising a Hand" hardback, left, sold nearly 10,000 copies. Volume two, with 238 photos, was released in August and can be purchased online.

Clements went for broke and contacted a liaison for Paul McCartney. When the music icon’s people came back with an affirmative reply, the door leading to other artists swung open wide. Black said that now they could feel the momentum. “Now, when I would send a request letter to a management company or an artist, in the subject line, I would put the names of five artists who’d already said yes.” Musical artists knew that something important was going on, said Black, and they wanted to be a part. Black and Clements published the book themselves, and when the proofs for “Raising a Hand: The Book,” finally came in, Black remembers staring down at the finished pages. “I just got so emotional, I was leaning over it, and my tears dropped on the book. I had to leave the room, it was

so overwhelming,” said Black. They handled the marketing of the book themselves too, said Black. “We were ‘Bible-thumpers,’ in our cars! We sold them out of my truck, took them to events, talked about them on Facebook, in emails, and to anyone that would listen.” Their efforts resulted in the sale of almost 10,000 copies and led to a second volume, which was released in August--a beautiful book with a white cover, filled with concert images from 238 artists, including Alan Jackson, Lionel Richey, Garth Brooks, Gene Simmons, Wynonna Judd, and so many others--the book that Coffey held up--and raised a hand for--on that evening at Dosey Doe. “You start to think of all that transpired during those three years when we hit brick walls, didn’t know how far around, didn’t know if we could climb it. May be we were dreaming, maybe we can’t get this done. Then something would happen in a way that we thought was divine intervention,” said Black. Black said it’s amazing how many times he’s introduced someone to the book, who then discovers their own connection to Rett through a family member or friend. One of those people is rock artist Jeff Coffey, whose wife has a friend raising a granddaughter with Rett. “We need to find out what’s going on with this disease,” Coffey told the Dosey Doe audience that night. After his performance, he graciously stayed and autographed copies of the book for his fans. “Jeff is a world class performer,“ said Clements. He said Coffey (whose photo appears in Volume 2), “is an example of the active support of the music community. There he is on stage, touting our book. It’s a great feeling.” This is the kind of moment that Clements and Black have worked for—the tying together of a love of music with the importance of putting Rett front and center—to raise awareness, to fund research, to end Rett. 28

UNSUNG DONORS IMPACT OUR COMMUNITIES, LEAVING A LIFE-CHANGING IMPRINT

CREDIT FOR THE PRACTICE OF MODERN PHILANTHROPY OFTEN GOES TO THE ULTRA-RICH. From the Gilded Age of Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller to the Tech Age of Bill and Melinda Gates, donating millions through foundations is an American tradition with visible, far-reaching impacts most private citizens could never affect on their own. Like many of your neighbors, Brent has a young family. His three-year-old son and five-month-old daughter provide relateable daily fire drills. He isn't famous, but he has worked with the federal government since operation "Warp Speed" to oversee its distribution of Covid-19 vaccines across the nation and beyond. He has opened his wallet but is not comfortable being called a philanthropist. "I feel I'm pretty generous with my time, but philanthropist? Nah," Wunderlich says. The numbers put up by unsung individual benefactors like Wunderlich may, on their own, seem modest or a bit humdrum. Six out of ten U.S. households donate to charity an average amount of between two and three

thousand dollars in any given year. (Philanthropy Roundtable) That is not enough to get their name put on a building or professional sports field, but often it is just enough to cover everyday essentials for a charity in need. Their generosity's sheer density and intimacy can leave a deep, lasting, and even life-changing imprint on the community. You may not realize what they support, but you'd likely miss it if the support were gone. President and CEO of the Montgomery County Community Foundation (MCCF), Julie Martineau, says that many of the nonprofit requests her organization receives are for funds to empower their dayto-day operations. Last year the Christian Legal Aid Society asked for money to access legal software and DocuSign to help it facilitate adoptions. At the same time, the Montgomery County Woman's Center sought funds for new cameras to improve

Small gifts accumulate in powerful ways. Offerings from individuals, groups of community donors, or local foundations culminate to make daily existence a little bit better. The more shoulders that share it, the less it feels like a burden. "You don't have to have a zillion dollars. You just have to have the willingness to say, where am I going to put my dollars," Wunderlich says. "I'm not 70 years old, I'm not at the end of my career, I'm not retired, and there is a way to be involved even from that standpoint." However, knowing how to go about it can be daunting whether you want to be charitable, philanthropic, or both. Established in 1983, MCCF is a public, nonprofit fund that helps people maximize their charitable giving using various donating methods. "Our whole mission is uniting donors' passions with their legacy," Martineau says. Whether your passion is large or small, a onetime contribution or continuous engagement, the MCCF seeks to find the right fit for all. Its offerings include Field of Interest Funds, Designated Agency Funds, Unrestricted Funds, and Donor-Advised Funds. You can contribute to existing funds at any time in any amount, or if you're able to meet the higher threshold of $15,000 over five years, you can set up a fund of your own. Wunderlich's Designated Agency Fund is just one of over 55 endowment funds worth $10 million that MCCF manages. Thus far, the income from these funds has allowed MCCF to make impactful grants and scholarships of almost $2.5 million in support of numerous nonprofits, local students, and long-term disaster recovery grants for area residents. "There is always need and folks who can use the extra hand," Wunderlich says. A very modest donation can be game-changing to a nonprofit or a program they are trying to administer. And as Montgomery County continues to grow, the need for neighborhood philanthropists is sure to grow with it.

Canopy is a charity that is very close to the heart of Laurie’s Home Furnishings. Laurie and I were the best of friends and during our friendship I was by her side as she fought her battle against ovarian cancer. Laurie saw a need and visualized a place such as Canopy. Years later that dream became a reality and the doors to Canopy, a cancer survivorship were opened. It is a true testament to the impact that spacial setting can have on ones emotional state. The instant you cross the threshold of Canopy you step into a place of comfort and security. A safe haven that provides care for cancer patients, cancer survivors, and their loved ones too. Laurie’s vision has become a reality.

The Highway Men Tribute is the tribute to Willie, Waylon, Johnny, and Kris!
