In today’s modern, wired world, finding time to connect with family, friends, and oneself is increasingly complex and challenging. Prior generations embraced the outdoors to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and experience a small slice of adventure. Time in nature has been shown to reduce anxiety and boost mental health. Studies show that camping and other outdoor activities increase bonding, improve self-esteem and confidence, build resilience, and improve overall mood, sleep, and creativity for kids and families. The problem with traditional camping and outdoor living is the hassle. Between the need for expensive gear like tents, sleeping bags, or cots and the hassle of setting up and teardown, not to mention exposure to the elements and the risk posed by inclement weather, especially the heat, camping “old school” has fallen out of favor with most families in North Texas. Tiny Home Vacations Resort in Denison, Texas, offers a unique lodging experience with individually decorated tiny homes featuring private firepits and outdoor space. Located at 315 Hanna Dr, Denison, TX 75020, the Resort is nestled near Lake Texoma and Eisenhower State Park, providing guests with easy access to outdoor activities like boating, fishing, and hiking. With easy access to all of the benefits of traditional camping without the hassle, expense, and inconvenience, the Resort is a perfect solution for families looking to recharge or reconnect. The Resort's tiny homes include well-appointed kitchenettes with fridges, microwaves, coffee pots, and cooking options; the forest huts offer bunk-style accommodations with a community Washhouse. Guests can enjoy an outdoor pool, hot tub, fire pits, barbecue grills, and a dog park so the entire family, including Fido, can enjoy the tranquil environment and well-maintained grounds. The outdoor spaces are carefully designed to facilitate exploration and relaxation for the child in all of us. It all began when Tyson Mathews discovered tiny homes through his Aunt Vicki and Uncle Ralph, who had built one on their property in Idaho. Something about

“He fell in love with creating a space where people could escape the noise of everyday life, reconnect with nature, and—most importantly—feel free to be kids again.” the simplicity, charm, and creativity of tiny living captured his spirit… even with Tyson being a man with a soul larger than life. He fell in love with creating a space where people could escape the noise of everyday life, reconnect with nature, and—most importantly—feel free to be kids again. In 2020, Tyson brought that vision to life, opening Tiny Home Vacations on the peaceful shores of Lake Texoma. With the concrete jungle of the Dallas Metro in mind, he built a retreat where families, friends, and solo travelers could come together under the stars, roast marshmallows around a fire, and breathe deeply for the first time in a long time without the hassle typically associated with outdoor adventure.

Tyson poured his heart into every detail. This wasn’t just a business to him — it was a dream grounded in joy, playfulness, and the belief that everyone deserves a place to feel light, free, and at peace. In late 2022, Tyson’s unexpected passing left a deep void, and the Resort temporarily closed its doors. But his spirit never left this place. In March 2024, under the direction of Aunt Vicki and a new management team, Tiny Home Resorts was lovingly revived — not just to honor Tyson’s legacy, but to carry it forward. Today, the beat of this place is more beautiful than ever. Guests will find new and expanded offerings, including the Hilltop Mercantile, guest laundry, pickleball court, human foosball, horseshoes, tent platforms, RV pads, the Forest Pavilion, Community Huts, and a warm, welcoming Event Room — each one created to bring people together and build new memories. Tiny Home Resorts remains what Tyson always intended: a haven for connection, laughter, adventure, and stillness. It is a place where strangers become friends and the simple joys of life are celebrated every day. TinyHomeResorts.com (430) 277-4500

SHERMAN SENIOR CENTER A Destination For Seniors As Texoma’s population ages, our seniors seek new opportunities to socialize, stay busy, and have fun. Fortunately, the Sherman Senior Center is available to help seniors meet those needs. The Sherman Senior Center offers meals, activities, a comfortable environment to visit with friends, and volunteer opportunities. Senior Center Coordinator, Deena Lowry, is happy to assist residents in getting started and involved. “We are growing. This year, we had over 170 new members. It is insane how many new people are coming into the Texoma area, and we fill an important need in the community. We offer various classes, holiday events, fishing tournaments, bingo, volleyball, and a great facility. We have a game room with billiards, exercise equipment, including treadmills for walking indoors, a computer center where members can use computers, a television room to watch shows, and a great event room with a kitchen where we host fun events and activities. We offer a wide range of engaging and fun activities for seniors, as well as programs designed to keep them busy and healthy. We partner with Meals On Wheels, and we deliver over 270 meals a month in Sherman.”

The Sherman Senior Center is often a busy hub of activity. According to Ms. Lowry, they average 100 member visits a day, and that number continues to increase. The City of Sherman covers the cost of memberships, allowing residents to join for free. Ms. Lowry, who has had a career working with seniors, still hopes that more seniors will take advantage of the programs and services offered at the Sherman Senior Center. When asked what some of the favorite activities the seniors enjoy are, she was quick to point out a few of the programs and events offered. “We have a big dance in August that many seniors enjoy. We have big Mother’s Day and Father’s Day and holiday events with great food and fellowship. We partner with the City of Denison to have an annual fishing derby at Waterloo Park. We have been doing this for over twenty years. In fact, you don’t have to be a resident of Sherman to join us. There is no residency restriction. You can live anywhere and join. The minimum age of membership is fifty years old.”

Deena Lowry, Center Coordinator

As the population of Texoma ages, she hopes that even more people will join the Sherman Senior Center. “There is a stigma sometimes of admitting that you are a senior. I think that keeps some people from joining us. I think that some people feel like once they join, they are admitting they are old. But that is just not true.” Carrie Tyler, the Sherman Senior Center activities specialist, agrees. “I think that staying busy and active really helps you as you get older. We do our best to provide healthy and fun activities for every single person

who walks through that front door. No matter what their needs are, we want to provide a safe and enjoyable space for our seniors. My goal as an activities specialist is to keep everyone active and meet their needs as seniors. I hope that our members get the word out to others so that more people can have a healthier and fulfilling life. I do try to stress that it is not just about numbers. We want our seniors to have a happier and healthier life. Quality of life is so important to our well-being, and I really do feel we help our members find that here at the Sherman Senior Center. 903.892.7316 1500 N. MAKE SUMMER GLOW OF OMNI PGA FRISCO RESORT & SPA

Stay, Golf, Shop, Dine At Omni PGA Frisco Resort & Spa

M UST SE E | ENTERTAI NME N T

Sensational summer staycations are brimming at Omni PGA Frisco Resort & Spa in Frisco from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Monica Smiley, CHDM, Omni PGA Frisco Resort & Spa director of marketing, says guests can experience the SUMMER OF GLOW, an enchanting mix of rejuvenating activities, kids' crafts, happy hours and varied entertainment. Overall, weekend glow parties allow guests to play 9 holes of mini golf on a course lit up with neon colors or gather around the glow of firepits to roast perfect s'mores. Every Saturday night, the resort hosts synchronized, mesmerizing drone shows in the sky. “However, for Fourth of July festivities, the drone show will be on Friday, July 4, rather than Saturday, July 5,” she states. This year, Glow parties are being hosted each Friday and Saturday evening, she adds. These include glow golf on the 10th Fairway Terrace, pool games, drone shows lighting up the skies and complimentary s'mores. “While staying at Omni PGA, guests can also enjoy playing two 18-hole championship golf courses (Fields Ranch East and Fields Ranch West). Additionally, golfers can delight in The Swing, a lighted 10-hole, par-3 short course,” she says. For more levity, Monica reminds that The Dance Floor provides a 2-acre putting course and entertainment area. Furthermore, this active Frisco location offers four on-site pools, including an adults-only rooftop infinity pool. “The resort’s on-site Mokara Spa can be booked for revitalizing, full-service treatments,” Monica adds. Experiencing different food cravings for the summer season? The site offers vast dining destinations for various hankerings, including TRICK RIDER (signature steaks, seafood, shellfish dishes); THE APRON + BAR (creative Texas and California fare); THE LOOKOUT LOUNGE & BAR (inspired small plates, tapas, bar bites); TOAST & TEE COFFEE COLLECTIVE (breakfast and all-day, grab-and-go items); GREEN CACTUS CAFÈ (wellness-driven foods including light bites, healthy juices, elixirs, sweet treats); BLUESTEM BAR (vibrant cocktails and bold bites via a rooftop experience); LEISURE POOL BAR (pool-friendly handhelds, big salads, chilled sweet treats, vibrant pool mixology); RYDER CUP GRILLE (robust menu of classic American culinary favorites and cocktails); ICE HOUSE (beer, wine, cocktails); LOUNGE BY TOPGOLF (indoor sports bar with craft cocktails, chef-driven fare and fun, immersive atmosphere for golfers and non-golfers alike); MARGARET'S CONES & CUPS (gourmet coffee, ice cream, sweet treats); FIELDS OVERLOOK (savory bites, grab-and-go golf foods, ready-to-drink cocktails); THE BUNKER (grab-and-go handhelds); THE SWING BAR (walk-up beverage truck serving margaritas, cold beer on tap, bottled cocktails, easy-to-grab snacks). The 660-acre PGA Frisco campus is recognized as one of the world's premier meeting and conference destinations, as well as a leisure escape featuring two championship golf courses at Fields Ranch, designed by Gil Hanse and Beau Welling. The resort's amenities include a full-service salon and spa, as well as boutique retail shops. Featuring subtle nods to Texas culture, each of the resort's 500 guest rooms and suites, as well as 10 exclusive four-bedroom modern Texas ranch houses offer sweeping views of the lush surroundings. The resort features more than 127,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space for meetings and events, including two ballrooms, 19 meeting rooms, nine outdoor event venues, and Panther Creek Pavilion, the ideal venue for weddings. 469.305.4500 OmniPGAFrisco.com JULY 2 0 2 5

SHERMAN SHADOWCATS HOST FAMILY-FRIENDLY BASEBALL GAMES FOR THE CROWDS ALL SUMMER ARTICLE BY MIKE ZAPATA | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SHERMAN SHADOWCATS

The Sherman Shadowcats bring one of the newest opportunities for residents to experience excitement and family fun. Sherman Sports and Entertainment was started by Tim and Andrea Woodland, who bring their lifelong passion and love of baseball to the Texoma area. The Sherman Shadowcats are the newest baseball team in the area, and they invite you to experience the excitement of local summer baseball. According to co-owner and Vice President of Sales Andrea Woodland, the Shadowcats held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in November 2023. Tim Woodland, co-owner of the Sherman Shadowcats, says, “We are committed to bringing an inexpensive family-friendly entertainment venue to Sherman, Texas, and what better way than to do it through the game of baseball.” According to Andrea Woodland, baseball has always been a part of their lives. Originally from the Houston area, the Woodlands had an opportunity to move to the Texoma area and start a summer collegiate baseball team. “We are so excited to be a part of this community. Everyone

in Sherman has been incredibly supportive, and we want to showcase what the organization has accomplished while providing quality baseball and wholesome, fun entertainment to Sherman and the Texoma area. Even my teenage son noticed how different it is to live in Sherman compared to when we lived in the Houston area. He told me it is refreshing that everyone here is so nice.” Andrea was also eager to point out what the Shadowcats bring to the community. “I think one of the things fans will see is that there are so many fan experiences available. You get to see college players before they gain recognition, and they are incredibly approachable. We have lots of meet-and-greets. Being a fan of the Shadowcats is a very intimate and personal experience. There are numerous opportunities to get to know the players. Because our ballpark is smaller than traditional professional ballparks, you are very close to the action. You can hear and see everything close up." She continues, "One thing that I think is different is that players live with host families. As you can see, much of our organization CONTINUED >

is centered around family. We are a very family-friendly and affordable establishment. It is such a great feeling to be a part of something so wholesome and family-oriented." The Woodlands share that they have a great staff, knowledgeable coaches, and outstanding players. They are excited to show the community the improvements made at the field, providing fans with an even more comfortable and enjoyable experience. Ann hopes that "everyone will come out to experience the excitement of local baseball and support the black and Vegas gold.” Tim Woodland adds, “Sports bring people together, and that is exactly what we intend to do. We are Sherman proud!” The Sherman Shadowcats play at Veterans Field in Fairview Park, Sherman, TX. The baseball season starts in May and continues to the beginning of August. Ticket sales and information can be found at the team's website at ShadowcatsBaseball.com or call 281-764-5599.

LIGHT UP THE SKY THIS FOURTH OF JULY ARTICLE BY SHARLA DAVENPORT

LOCA L’S CH OICE | ENTERTAIN ME N T

July signifies one major event– Independence Day. Although the Fourth of July has been a national holiday since 1870, the actual celebrations, including fireworks, started during the Revolutionary War in 1776. After adopting the Declaration of Independence, minor events occurred in 1776, but The History Channel notes the first official fireworks event took place a year later, marking the Declaration’s anniversary. Naval ships gathered at the Philadelphia river on July 4, 1777, and fired a 13-gun salute for the original colonies, from its cannons, making it a national tradition ever since. Almost 250 years later, the festivities continue. The Texoma Region is home to many fireworks celebrations of note. The City of Sherman will host its 16th Annual “Lights on the Lake” on Thursday, July 3rd at Pecan Grove West Park. It will include a free concert by 90’s Rock Band, Stone Temple Pilots, followed by a fireworks show. Sara McRae, Tourism/Main Street Manager for the City of Sherman, says this is

“Texoma’s biggest and best Independence Day celebration!” For more information, refer to CityofSherman.com or via the city’s social media. On July 4th, visit Denison’s 38th Annual “Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration” at Munson Stadium, promising to be even bigger and better than previous years. Fireworks can be seen throughout downtown Denison and the surrounding area. It is recommended to park nearby and bring lawn chairs (note that they are not allowed in the stadium). By integrating the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with faith, encouragement, and a unified, compassionate team, The Owen Academy builds an atmosphere where children gain critical life skills while finding joy, confidence, and a true sense of belonging.

theowenacademy.com At The Owen Academy, play is valued as an essential foundation for learning. Therapists thoughtfully follow each child’s lead, harnessing their natural curiosity and interests to create purposeful opportunities for growth.
