LIFESTYLE LETTER

Fresh New Beginnings As we step into 2026, I’m reminded of something uniquely Texoma: our community’s remarkable ability to embrace both resilience and renewal. Each new year brings with it the promise of a fresh start, but here, that promise feels especially grounded - rooted in the strength, spirit, and sincerity of the people who call this region home. This issue, dedicated to Health & Wellness, is our invitation to begin the year with intention. Not the rigid, all-or-nothing resolutions that fade by February, but meaningful, sustainable practices that help us thrive - physically, mentally, and emotionally. In these pages, you’ll meet local experts who are reshaping how we think about wellness and preventive care. You’ll find success stories of neighbors and business owners who lived this past year with intention. And you’ll discover fresh ways to support your well-being, whether that means reconnecting with nature, exploring new modalities of self-care, or strengthening the relationships that give our days purpose. Texoma has always been a place where community and personal wellness intersect. From sunrise walks along the water to farmers markets overflowing with local goodness to the small-town kindness that lifts us up on hard days, wellness here is more than a trend. It’s a shared way of life. As we turn the page to a new year, my hope is that this issue inspires you to nurture your body, challenge your limits, and give yourself grace along the journey. Here’s to a vibrant, healthy, and wholehearted 2026. Warmly,

WELLNESS BOOKS TO READ IN 2026 ARTICLE BY JENNIFER HAVEMAN

Nurture Your Mind, Strengthen Your Habits, Protect Your Peace

In today’s fast-paced world, taking care of your health means so much more than scheduling workouts or eating balanced meals. True, lasting wellness comes from nurturing your mind, strengthening your habits, protecting your peace, and helps you grow into the healthiest version of yourself. Many people find themselves overwhelmed by stress, struggling with boundaries, or unsure how to break old patterns that keep them stuck. Others want to improve their emotional resilience, find clarity in a noisy world, or simply build a lifestyle that supports their physical, mental, and relational well-being. Self-health books have become an invaluable tool in this journey. They offer research-backed strategies, relatable stories, and practical guidance that empower readers to make meaningful change. Atomic Habits by James Clear

Atomic Habits teaches how tiny, consistent improvements compound into life-altering transformations. Clear breaks down the psychology of habit formation into four steps—cue, craving, response, and reward—and shows how to redesign your environment, mindset, and systems for success. Instead of relying on motivation, you build habits that run automatically in the background of your life. Whether you’re seeking better health, stronger routines, or positive daily structure, this book is a blueprint for lasting change.

The Let Them Theory

The Anxious Generation

Hidden Potential

Mel Robbins’ version of The Let Them Theory centers on one powerful mindset shift: you cannot control other people, so let them be who they are, and focus on who you want to be. Instead of overanalyzing others’ choices, trying to convince people to act differently, or taking their behavior personally, Robbins encourages readers to simply let them. Let them judge. Let them be late. Let them leave you out. Let them misunderstand you. Let them choose differently than you would. This approach isn’t about apathy. It’s about freedom.

Jonathan Haidt examines the rise of anxiety, depression, and social struggles in younger generations and how technology, smartphones, and declining real-world engagement contribute to it. While centered on youth, this book offers eye-opening insight for adults as well, prompting readers to reconsider digital habits, screen exposure, and the importance of human connection. It’s a must-read for anyone wanting to improve emotional health and create a more grounded, less anxious lifestyle at home.

In Hidden Potential, organizational psychologist Adam Grant challenges the belief that success is determined solely by talent. Instead, he reveals how persistence, practice, and a supportive environment help people achieve excellence even when they don’t start out ahead. Grant explores how character, curiosity, and willingness to learn open doors to unexpected heights. This book is especially powerful for those looking to grow in career, leadership, mindset, or personal well-being.

ADVANCED EYECARE TECHNOLOGY MEETS SMALLTOWN HEART

“THE EYES ARE A WINDOW TO THE SOUL,” THE SAYING GOES, BUT IN DR. NEWBERRY’S PRACTICE, THEY ARE ALSO A WINDOW TO OVERALL HEALTH.

E

very morning at 6:00 a.m. in Pottsboro, Dr. Eric Newberry and his wife, Jennifer, sit down over coffee to discuss the day ahead and share updates on their latest projects. This ritual, which has continued for over 20 years, allows them to collaborate while setting healthy boundaries between work and personal life. For this husband-and-wife team, starting the day together in this way defines the balance between their professional responsibilities and their life outside the office. In 2024, after selling their previous practice in McKinney, the Newberrys purchased Nietling Optical from Dr. Dennis Nietling in Denison. A Main Street fixture for more than 40 years, the practice had long-standing patients, some families returning for generations. The Newberrys saw an exciting opportunity: to honor the community’s trust in a beloved local business while introducing modern tools, techniques, and treatments.

After completing the purchase in March 2024, the Newberrys immediately launched a yearlong renovation. Every detail of the office, from paint and flooring to furniture and fixtures, was refreshed to create a welcoming, modern environment. “Patients have appreciated the modern look and feel of the office and the changes we have made,” Jennifer says. With these updates, EyeCare Texoma combines the warmth of a small-town practice with cutting-edge technology, giving patients confidence in their care. Currently, Phase 2 of the Downtown Denison project is taking place on Main Street in front of the office, but the front door remains easily accessible due to new sidewalks and they can’t wait to see the finished project in mid 2026. EyeCare Texoma’s mission is to educate patients about their eyes and the possibilities offered by new technology, medications, and therapies. Dr. Newberry strives to offer a clear, concise, easy-to-understand description of any ocular issues and to answer any and all questions thoroughly. Being residency trained in the diagnosis and management of ocular disease allows Dr. Newberry to utilize his specialized skill set to diagnose and treat everything from glaucoma and macular degeneration to diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, dry eye, and ocular allergies. Jennifer, as the practice administrator, is constantly working with our team to enhance customer service and the patient experience. Residency-trained in the diagnosis and management of medical eye conditions, Dr. Newberry treats everything from glaucoma and macular degeneration to diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, dry eye, allergic eyes, and red eyes. With advanced equipment and expertise, the practice can manage virtually any eye disease. “The eyes are a window to the soul,” the saying goes, but in Dr. Newberry’s practice, they are also a window to overall health. Because the eye is the only place in the body where the vascular system can be observed without an incision, routine exams, enhanced by pupil dilation and Optomap retinal imaging, allow Dr. Newberry to assess a patient’s general health alongside their eye health. “THEIR COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY DRIVES THEM TO PROVIDE EXCEPTIONAL EYE CARE FOR GENERATIONS, ENSURING THAT NEIGHBORS, YOUNG AND OLD, HAVE ACCESS TO THE LATEST IN VISION CARE AND TREATMENT.”

Dr. Newberry and Jennifer Newberry

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is one of the most common conditions seen at EyeCare Texoma. Whether caused by insufficient tear production or rapid tear evaporation, the team can diagnose the specific type and recommend treatments to relieve symptoms. Glaucoma is another area of Dr. Newberry’s specialty, and he brings over 25 years of experience to the care of these patients. Every patient is screened for glaucoma, with Dr. Newberry reviewing test results personally and explaining treatment options in an easy-to-understand way. EyeCare Texoma also offers urgent care for sudden or concerning eye symptoms. Red, itchy, or uncomfortable eyes; foreign bodies or possible corneal abrasions; flashes and floaters - these can all signal conditions needing prompt attention. A dilated exam allows Dr. Newberry to accurately diagnose and manage urgent cases, including signs of retinal detachment or even systemic health issues like high blood pressure or stroke. For the Newberrys, North Texas isn’t just a practice location, it’s home. Jennifer grew up in Pottsboro, where her family was very involved in the community. Their commitment to the community drives them to provide exceptional eye care for generations, ensuring that neighbors, young and old, have access to the latest in vision care and treatment. At EyeCare Texoma, advanced technology meets small-town heart, giving every patient clarity, confidence, and care for the eyes that connect them to the world. 417 W Main Street, Denison EyeCareTexoma.com

OLDEST PRIVATE COLLEGE IN TEXAS BRINGS STUDENTS INTO THE FUTURE

New residents may be surprised to learn that a significant piece of Texas education history sits right in the heart of Sherman. Austin College is the oldest institution of higher eduction in Texas still operating under its original name and charter. Founded in 1849, the college first opened its doors in Huntsville. After weathering three epidemics, the Civil War, and years of financial strain, the school sought a fresh start in a region poised for growth. Sherman and Denison were booming at the time, making the area a promising new home. The college has thrived here ever since. Austin College’s mission remains central to its identity. “Our mission statement is our North Star,” the College affirms. “Austin College is a private, primarily residential, undergraduate liberal arts college committed to academic excellence and devoted to preparing students for rewarding careers and full, engaged, and meaningful lives. Along with a core foundation in the liberal arts and sciences, the College also offers pre-professional, professional, and graduate programs.” That mission comes alive through people like Heidi Rushing, the College’s Vice President for Marketing and Communications, a proud Austin College alumna, Rushing speaks with genuine warmth about the school’s impact. After graduating, she began working at the college as a secretary and steadily advanced to her current leadership role.

“We really do offer so much here,” she says. “We have a strong reputation for our pre-med and pre-law programs, and acceptance rates into medical and law schools are very high. In fact, 94 percent of our graduates are employed or enrolled in graduate or professional programs within one year. Our students earn prestigious fellowships, and we are the top producer of Fulbright recipients per capita in Texas.” Rushing explains that Austin College continually evaluates regional and statewide needs to ensure its programs equip students for the future. The college also encourages academic exploration and multidisciplinary interests. “Students might pursue dual majors like law and the arts or medical science and teaching. There are so many avenues to discover the career path that’s right for you.” Small class sizes are another hallmark of the Austin College experience. With an average of just 16 students per class, faculty and students build meaningful one-on-one relationships that enrich both learning and personal growth. Rushing also highlights the college’s vibrant, inclusive campus community. “Diversity is incredibly important to us. People often have a misconception of who our students are, but our student body is wonderfully diverse in backgrounds and experiences. Access matters too, 100 percent of our students receive some form of financial aid, grants, or gifts.” Although the college competes in NCAA Division III and cannot offer athletic scholarships, participation remains strong. “Between thirty and forty percent of our students are involved in our fourteen sports programs,” Rushing notes. Beyond athletics, students can choose from more than 75 organizations, all offering leadership opportunities. Students, faculty, and staff collectively contribute over 16,000 volunteer hours to the community each year. Creative expression also thrives through three annual student art galleries, and a variety of performance arts enrich campus life. The campus itself is a gem with a peaceful, park-like stretch of more than 100 acres filled with mature live oaks and serene green spaces. Rushing hopes Texoma residents will take advantage of the many public events the college offers. “These aren’t just opportunities for our students, they’re a way for the community to engage with and support them,” she says. “We invite our neighbors to visit campus for sporting events, art exhibits, music performances, and theater productions. Our weekly Wind Down Wednesdays are hour-long presentations covering a wide variety of topics, offering great conversation and fellowship.” With a rich history, a dynamic academic environment, and a strong commitment to community, Austin College continues to be one of Texoma’s most enduring and inspiring institutions.

RED RIVER ER & HO S PI TA L OUR HEALTH IS THEIR BUSINESS

ARTICLE BY MIKE ZAPATA

FAM ILY CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

As the Texoma region continues to grow, many residents are finding their needs for emergency medical care growing as well. Fortunately for Texoma residents, a brand new 18,500 square foot emergency medical facility is opening its doors for those in need of immediate medical care. Red River ER & Hospital opened in November 2025 and provides patients with the very best in emergency care. Taylor Poteet, Business Development Manager at Red River ER & Hospital, explains that although it will be primarily an emergency room and hospital, they will offer outpatient services with the latest technologies and equipment for patients requiring laboratory and imaging services, including MRI, CT, ultrasound, and X-rays. Poteet says, “We can provide overnight inpatient care, pediatric care, and will have two triage rooms, seven emergency rooms, and four inpatient rooms. We are an advanced care, 24 hour, and 365 days a year facility. We are even open on all holidays." Red River ER & Hospital thinks you will be pleased to discover shorter wait times and board-certified emergency room physicians. Poteet adds, "We are unique in that we are a physician-owned and operated emergency care facility. And yes, that means that you will see the physician owners actually on the floor providing emergency care. Our doctors work 24-hour shifts and will do whatever they can to provide the best care available." The administrative team all have clinical experience as well. In fact, Taylor Poteet has a background as a 14-year CT and X-ray professional.

“I was looking for something new and challenging, but in the world of medicine. I also wanted to be very involved in the community. Personally, that is very important to me, and I know it is important to all of our staff. Our experience gives us a different perspective than most typical medical facilities. We offer a patient care-forward perspective. I have been so encouraged to see residents get excited about our facility opening. We want them to know we are available for them day or night. Here, they are going to find out that they will have a lot of face time with their care providers. We offer concierge care. You will not be just a number here. You will be well taken care of.” The hospital is already making an impact in the community. Poteet shares, "We recently partnered with the City of Sherman Health and Insurance Fair, and we immediately joined the Sherman Chamber of Commerce. CHEERS cherries TO CELEBRATE HEALTH, WELLNESS & DRY JANUARY WITH THIS SUPERFOOD MOCKTAIL It’s been said that “life is just a bowl of cherries,” and it just so happens that cherries might improve your life. This nutrient-dense, heart-healthy fruit may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, combat inflammation, help the body manage stress, speed recovery after exercise, balance your mood and help you sleep. To say it is a superfood may be an understatement. So it’s only fitting that we include a mocktail recipe with cherries as the star ingredient this month. Let’s drink to health, wellness and a wonderful year ahead! Cheers!

The New Frontier of Health U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED

AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

M UST SE E | W EL L NES S

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive selfcriticism to continuously raise the standard of care.” To hear the extended conversation with Dr. Kyle Gillett, scan the QR code for an exclusive podcast episode.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS OUR TEXOMA CITY LIFESTYLE TEAM SHARES THEIR 2026 GOALS

LUCAS R I DL EY So c i al Me di a C oordi n ator MIK E ZA PATA Write r & Photographe r

My resolution is to take the next step in a vision I’ve been shaping quietly, expanding the experiences I offer the community. I believe the right spaces can bring people together, and 2026 feels like the year to lean into that purpose with intention and a little bit of courage.

This New Year, my goal is to continue being the best husband and father I can be and to fully appreciate whatever time I’m blessed with. I’m wishing for good health, new adventures, great concerts and movies, and plenty of laughter with family and friends.

COURT NEY MITCHELL Ph otog raphe r My 2026 resolution is simple: spend less time glued to technology and more time caring for my body and mind. More movement, more mental reset moments, and a healthier balance so I can feel good and create with intention.

DANIELLE PO CHÉ Managing Editor

I resolve to be more intentional with my time by focusing on meaningful connections, purposeful work, and personal well-being. And, as with every year, I vow to read more books and eat healthier than the year before.

In 2026, I’m choosing more family adventures and meaningful connections. I want to be more intentional with my gratitude and celebrate the small joys—because there is so much in life to be thankful for.
