Heart-Centered Care

The idea for The Owen Academy began at the intersection of professional experience and the realities of raising a child with autism in an underserved region.

Before opening T.O.A., I was the mother of a nonverbal child traveling to the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex five days a week for more than three years to access ABA therapy because no services were available closer to home. To make this possible, I stepped away from my professional career, making significant personal and financial sacrifices so my child could receive essential care.

During that time, I advocated for therapy centers closer to where we lived in Sherman, Texas, believing families should not have to leave their communities or livelihoods to access appropriate services. Years later, drawing on my experience supporting medical practices, I felt called to create a center grounded in both clinical excellence and a parent’s perspective.

As the parent of a nonverbal child, I often considered whether long therapy days felt safe, respectful, and supportive from my son’s point of view. That concern became the guiding principle behind The Owen Academy.

Durant, Oklahoma was a purposeful choice. It is an underserved area for autism services and the region where I attended college and grew up, making the decision to open The Owen Academy there both professional and deeply personal.

Prior to opening The Owen Academy, I founded The Owen Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Texoma autism families since 2021 through education, awareness, and inclusive community programs, including an annual 5K and free sports camps.

Today, The Owen Academy is led by a highly qualified team of Board Certified Behavior Analysts and Registered Behavior Technicians providing evidence-based care with integrity and heart. We measure success not by the length of a waitlist, but by our commitment to responsible growth—so no child in our community goes without the respectful, science-driven therapy they deserve.

At its heart, The Owen Academy is rooted in compassion shaped by lived experience. As both a mother and a lifelong member of the Texoma community, I understand the trust families place in those who care for their children, and we honor that trust by serving every child with dignity, respect, and genuine care.

ROMANCE READS

Your Cozy February Escape

February is the month that invites us to slow down, lean into a bit of indulgence, and celebrate stories that stir the heart. As winter lingers and days remain shorter, romance novels offer a cozy escape, wrapping readers in stories filled with connection, hope, and possibility. Whether it’s a charming small-town love story, a slow-burning friends-to-lovers arc, or a sweeping, emotional saga, romance has a unique way of meeting readers exactly where they are and giving them something to believe in. Often misunderstood or dismissed, romance is far more than predictable plots and happily-ever-afters.  These stories reflect real emotions while offering the comfort of knowing love ultimately finds a way forward. For many readers, romance isn’t just entertainment; it’s a form of self-care.

February, with its heart-shaped everything and emphasis on love, is the perfect time to embrace the genre without apology. Reading romance allows us to pause, escape the noise of daily life, and immerse ourselves in narratives that celebrate connection in all its forms. Whether you’re a lifelong romance reader or just beginning to explore the genre, these books invite you to curl up, turn the page, and remember that love stories are always worth the time.

Great

Big Beautiful Life

“These stories reflect real emotions while offering the comfort of knowing love ultimately finds a way forward.”

Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry is a tender, life-affirming novel about love, ambition, and the stories we tell ourselves. When journalist Alice Scott competes with her charming rival to interview a famously reclusive woman, she’s drawn into a week of secrets, storytelling, and unexpected connection. Blending sharp wit with emotional depth, Henry explores heartbreak, hope, and the courage it takes to choose joy.

The Favorites

The Favorites by Layne Fargo is a dark, addictive dive into ambition, obsession, and the high-stakes world of competitive figure skating. Following electrifying ice-dance duo Katarina Shaw and Heath Rocha, the novel peels back the glitter to reveal toxic loyalty, power struggles, and the cost of chasing perfection. Told through sharp, propulsive perspectives, this is a gripping story about fame, control, and how far people will go to win— even if it means destroying each other.

We All Live Here by

We All Live Here by Jojo Moyes is a warm, witty, and emotionally honest novel about family, forgiveness, and second chances. When a house full of very different people is forced to coexist, old wounds resurface, and unexpected bonds begin to form. With her signature humor and heart, Moyes explores love in all its forms, reminding readers that sometimes the families we build are just as important as the ones we’re born into.

The Night We Met by Abby

You can hardly talk about modern love stories without including powerhouse romance author Abby Jimenez. Set to release in late March, The Night We Met chronicles Larissa’s deeply layered relationship with her close friend Chris, and the lingering question of what if. Will she leap, following her heart and potentially breaking someone else’s, or will she stay where it’s safe and familiar, even if it means breaking her own?

A CHAT WITH THE MAYORS

A MEETING OF THE MINDS IN TEXOMA

PHOTOGRAPHY BY COURTNEY MITCHELL

MAYOR SHAWN TEAMANN

SHERMAN

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO RUN FOR MAYOR?

When I first ran for City Council in 2016, my wife and I had just learned we were expecting our first child. I had owned a local business for more than a decade and wanted to bring that experience to public service to help make thoughtful, efficient decisions for our community.

As my family grew, so did my desire to help shape a city my kids and future generations could enjoy and be proud of. After eight years on City Council, I ran for Mayor because Sherman was at a critical crossroads. I knew the challenges and opportunities ahead and wanted to ensure that as we grow, we stay focused on the issues that matter most to families here.

AS WE CELEBRATE LOVE LOCAL THIS MONTH, WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SERVING THIS COMMUNITY?

What I love most is the people and their pride in Sherman. This is a community that supports local businesses, shows up for events, and looks out for neighbors. There’s a strong sense of ownership, and people genuinely care

about where they live. Being able to serve a community invested in itself is something I truly appreciate.

WHAT IS ONE SURPRISING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW?

I genuinely enjoy working with numbers. Math feels like a puzzle to me, and I love when numbers are part of the conversation. I enjoy building large Excel spreadsheets, digging into budgets, and reconciling bank statements—sometimes spending hours tracking down a single cent. And I never pass up a good Sudoku puzzle.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES FOR THE CITY OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

My priority is focusing on the community’s basic needs and taking care of what we already have before moving on to new projects. That includes investing in infrastructure, running an efficient government, and continuing quality-of-life initiatives.

I want downtown to flourish as a gathering place for residents and visitors. I’ll continue to advocate for the community and believe maintaining Sherman’s identity is critical. We’re growing faster than in decades, and now more than ever, it’s important to keep Sherman, Sherman.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE HEART OF THIS COMMUNITY?

The heart of Sherman is its people. Once you’ve lived here, it’s hard to be happy anywhere else. Connections are never far away - if you don’t know someone, one call usually gets you there.

We value relationships. You can go out to dinner and run into a room full of familiar faces. Sherman is a big town that truly feels like a small city, and that sense of connection is what makes it special.

MAYOR TOM CECI

POTTSBORO

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO RUN FOR MAYOR?

After our late Mayor Frank Budra passed away, the council was looking to appoint a temporary mayor. Several citizens asked me to consider the role. There were 10 candidates, and each of us made a brief presentation to the council. I was selected and served as temporary mayor until the May elections, where I ran unopposed and became Pottsboro’s mayor.

AS WE CELEBRATE LOVE LOCAL THIS MONTH, WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SERVING THIS COMMUNITY?

Pottsboro is a beautiful place to call home, filled with great citizens who make it special. Pride in our town runs deep, and our dedicated city employees work every day to keep Pottsboro thriving. Our library is recognized as one of the best in the nation, and programs supporting youth and seniors reflect the community’s commitment to service. Events like the Boot Scootin’ Ball showcase the camaraderie surrounding our Fire and EMS teams, while the Chamber of Commerce supports local businesses and

guides responsible growth. Serving as mayor allows me to listen, advocate, and help turn community ideas into real progress.

WHAT IS ONE SURPRISING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW?

Being mayor isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about listening. I prioritize hearing concerns, ideas, and perspectives from residents, business owners, and staff. These conversations shape the best decisions and remind me that leadership in a small town like Pottsboro is about being accessible and learning from the community.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES FOR THE CITY OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

My focus is on thoughtful growth, strong infrastructure, and preserving the character that makes our town special. Maintaining and improving roads, water, and sewer systems ensures we meet current needs while preparing for growth. I am also focused on smart, well-planned development that brings quality housing and business opportunities without losing our small-town feel. Supporting local businesses and attracting new ones that align with our community values is key to a strong local economy.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE HEART OF THIS COMMUNITY?

The heart of Pottsboro is its people. Neighbors look out for one another, volunteers give their time, small businesses invest locally, and families take pride in calling Pottsboro home. It’s found in our schools, churches, civic groups, and everyday moments where people come together. Residents’ love for this community, rooted in tradition and involvement, keeps Pottsboro welcoming and connected for generations.

MAYOR ROBERT CRAWLEY

DENISON

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO RUN FOR MAYOR?

A deep love for the City of Denison and a strong belief that local leadership can improve everyday quality of life by strengthening neighborhoods, supporting families and businesses, and planning responsibly for the future. Being mayor is about listening, leading, and helping shape a community people are proud to call home.

AS WE CELEBRATE LOVE LOCAL THIS MONTH, WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SERVING THIS COMMUNITY?

Denison has a strong sense of community, connection, and pride. Its rich and impactful history is paired with a bright future. This is a city where residents genuinely care about one another and about the future of their hometown. Serving Denison as mayor means being part of a close-knit community that values hard work, integrity, and teamwork, while preserving its character and supporting thoughtful, meaningful growth.

WHAT IS ONE SURPRISING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW?

I play the drums in a rock and roll band, and I love all music genres.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES FOR THE CITY OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

Responsibly managing growth while preserving Denison’s historic charm will remain a top priority. The city will continue investing in critical infrastructure, public safety, and quality-of-life amenities that support families, businesses, and visitors. Strengthening economic development, supporting local businesses, expanding recreational opportunities, and maintaining transparent, responsive city services will help keep residents engaged and proud of the City of Denison.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE HEART OF THIS COMMUNITY?

The heart of Denison is its people and their strong sense of community. Residents work together to make the city great, taking pride in their neighborhoods, schools, and local businesses. That heart also lives in Denison’s rich history and hometown spirit, where community connections truly matter.

A HISTORIC LANDMARK FOR THE FUTURE

Any drive through downtown Denison will likely take you past what has quickly become one of the city’s newest landmarks, the Denison Yellowjacket Silo. While the silo has stood for generations, its once nondescript appearance has long stood as a familiar landmark. With a fresh, eye-catching design, the silos now command attention from anyone passing through. Nationally recognized artist, ARCY, was commissioned to create a vibrant and meaningful art piece, executed in true Texas style on one of the city’s largest canvases.

Local community volunteer DC Ramsey chaired the committee that launched the project. According to DC, the Denison Development Foundation created a task force that included Ramsey, Brian Hander, Stanley Morrison, Dr. Michael Courtright, Rayce Guess, Zac Duce, Donna Dow, Tiffany Barney-Harolds, Tony Kaai, and Bill Retz.

“Everyone brought something to the table, but retired Rear Admiral Bill Retz took on the role of master planner,” Mrs. Ramsey explained. “He coordinated each step, was on-site daily, worked closely with the artist and contractors, and oversaw every detail of the installation.” She also noted the project was entirely privately funded, with no public money used. Thanks to generous contributions from local art supporters, businesses, and volunteers, the mural was completed on schedule in time for the 2025 football season.

“THIS WAS THE PERFECT CHANCE TO CREATE MEANINGFUL ART FOR OUR RESIDENTS.”

Ramsey shared her excitement about being part of the project. As a senior leader whose work spans international sports and entertainment, she felt a strong connection to the work, which combined her passions for sports, public art, and history. “I believe public art and economic development should go hand in hand. This was a rare opportunity, one of those structures you drive past every day. We asked ourselves how we could add more to our city, and this was the perfect chance to create meaningful art for our residents. It feels good to invest time in the community, and this canvas allowed us to honor Denison’s history. Hopefully, projects like this inspire creativity and remind people that they can contribute to their community, spark pride, and engage in conversation.”

The mural depicts a Denison Yellowjacket football player passing the Ax, the trophy from the historic annual Battle of the Ax between the Denison Yellowjackets and the Sherman Bearcats, to a member of the Killer Bees, Denison’s youth sports program. Dating back to 1901, the Denison vs. Sherman high school football game is the longest-running series in Texas and one of the state’s most well-known rivalries. The mural is clearly visible from the home stands at Munson Stadium during games. “Anyone driving through will see the mural and hopefully feel pride and appreciation for our history and art,” DC Ramsey said. “Pride runs deep.”

BECAUSE.

CHOCOLATE.

When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served “dinner” early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!

The Spiked Jones

• 1/2 cup milk

• 1 cup heavy cream

• 1/4 cup whole coffee beans

• 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped

• 2 tablespoons Kahlua

• 1 teaspoon confectioners’ sugar

• 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

Date Night

AT HOME

THREE CREATIVE IDEAS TO CELEBRATE LOVE

Not every date night needs to involve reservations or an elaborate itinerary. With a little creativity, you can create magical moments right at home. Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or just want to reconnect, here are three ideas for unforgettable at-home date nights.

ROMANTIC PICNIC UNDER THE STARS

Transform your backyard or balcony into a dreamy picnic spot! Spread out a cozy blanket, add a few fluffy pillows, and hang string lights or fairy lights for ambiance. A small fire pit or lanterns can also add a romantic glow.

Pack a picnic basket with finger foods and a bottle of wine or sparkling water. Don’t forget a decadent dessert like chocolate-dipped strawberries. Lay back and stargaze, identifying constellations or making wishes on shooting stars. To make it extra romantic, bring a bluetooth speaker and play soft music.

BREAKFAST IN BED

Start the day with love by turning breakfast into an indulgent experience. Prepare a tray with a DIY breakfast charcuterie board. Include mini pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, bacon, and pastries. Add small bowls of toppings like syrup, Nutella, or whipped cream.

Mix up mimosas or serve coffee with flavored syrups and whipped cream for a café vibe. Then, snuggle up in bed and watch a favorite movie or TV series.

PAINT AND CREATE TOGETHER

Unleash your inner artists with one of these three fun and interactive dates. Grab some inexpensive canvases, brushes, and acrylic paints from the craft store. Don’t forget aprons or old clothes to protect against spills!

• Paint each other’s portraits for a mix of laughter and creativity.

• Work on a collaborative painting - each person adds their own touch to a single canvas.

• Try a themed painting challenge, like recreating your favorite memory together.

Pair this date with a cheese platter and wine and don’t worry about being “good’ at paintingit’s all about enjoying the process together.

MIRROR WORK FOR SELF-LOVE AND ACCEPTANCE

Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? Everyone knows this line from Snow White. The Queen wanted to be the fairest. When she wasn’t, she poisoned beautiful Snow White. Most of us do not believe ourselves to be the fairest, but quite the opposite.

As February is widely known as the month of love, let’s focus on self-love. Often people, especially parents, tend to give a lot to their partners and their children and less to themselves. Sometimes it is challenging for us to silence the inner critic that speaks harshly to ourselves in a way we would never speak to a loved friend or family member. This is where mirror work can help.

Many people have a complicated relationship with the mirror. We don’t always like to look at our reflections. We may find it confronting. Taylor Swift even sings about it in her song Anti-hero: “I’ll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror.” Why is it so difficult for some of us to gaze with love–or affection–into the mirror?

Mirror work, a term coined by transformational teacher and selflove expert Louise Hay, founder of Hay House Publishing, and the author of You Can Heal Your Life and Mirror Work: 21 Days to Heal Your Life, is the practice of looking at yourself in the mirror and saying nice things to yourself. You can start with something simple. “I like myself. I am doing the best I can today.” Or even, “Hey sweetie! You look great!” One of my favorites is, “I love, accept, and forgive myself fully and completely.” Mirror work combines well with affirmations, which are positive phrases said in the present tense as if they are already true. The practice of saying affirmations combined with mirror work can increase the benefits of both practices.

The objective of mirror work is to help people silence their inner critic and believe the positive words they are telling themselves while looking at themselves in the mirror.

Mirror work can help with self-esteem issues and can achieve results such as changing a negative body image to a more positive one. Hay developed the practice to increase self-compassion and self-love as part of the daily activities detailed in her 1984 book You Can Heal Your Life

Although it can be confronting and challenging, it is important to practice mirror work regularly to reap the benefits. Set a daily goal of saying affirmations while looking at your reflection in the mirror and seeing how it makes you feel. Start with two minutes a day and work up to five.

As a yoga teacher, I have included mirror work in my classes with clients. Often the first experience with the exercise is somewhat uncomfortable, but with practice, it becomes more natural. When resistance comes up, ask yourself what you are feeling, allow the emotion to be present, and then release it. It may be rooted in a past experience and just needs to be acknowledged and felt before you can let it go.

HERE ARE SOME SIMPLE GUIDELINES FOR HOW TO CREATE A MIRROR WORK PRACTICE:

• Make sure you will be alone and uninterrupted so you can let your guard down and allow emotions to surface

• Try to do it for a set amount of time, such as five minutes every day

• Allow yourself to feel and process whatever emotions show up

• Keep a journal to record your feelings, reactions, and experiences

• Start with less confronting or difficult phrases, and as you become comfortable increase the intensity

Mirror work can be used in tandem with inner-child work because many of the negative limiting beliefs that play in our minds are the result of something we were told as a child that is not true about us or our life. If something negative comes up during mirror work, we can challenge it and write about the feelings in the journal, thus freeing us from that limiting belief.

Inner child work is an approach to recognizing and healing childhood trauma. We all experience traumas as children which affect the way we experience the world. As adults, we can reconnect with the child we once were, in order to heal. Mirror work is one way to help facilitate that process, in addition to talk therapy, meditation exercises, and setting healthy boundaries.

Here are some ideas for affirmations to use with your mirror work. I am strong. I am capable. I can do this. I believe in myself. I know my worth. I can do hard things. My life is abundant. I am happy and healthy in mind, body, and spirit. I believe in myself. I am kind and compassionate. I deserve love and abundance. I am doing my best. I am smart. I am brave. I am powerful.

In the words of Hay, “Doing mirror work is one of the most loving gifts you can give yourself.”

I AM STRONG.
