As we step into a brand-new year, January arrives with a certain clarity—a fresh page, a deep breath, and the promise of renewal. It’s a month that naturally invites reflection and intention, and a chance to nurture our well-being from the inside out. This year, rather than chasing perfection or piling on rigid resolutions, we’re choosing something different: gentle, sustainable wellness. In this issue, we explore health that feels good rather than forced. We catch up with Adam Turner of Red Mountain Dermatology, where patient-centered expertise meets real results and a simple goal—to be the community’s trusted dermatology home. Dr. Jason Heavens brings a deeply personal approach to longevity and wellness, empowering patients to thrive at every stage of life. And Scott and AnnMarie of Our Hearts Enter guide clients in transforming their lives through clarity, purpose, and unshakable inner strength. You’ll also find guidance on building habits that support your energy instead of draining it, simple rituals that brighten daily life, and expert insights on caring for both mind and body with compassion. From nourishing recipes and mindful movement to the joy of slowing down, we invite you to discover wellness that feels personal, meaningful, and rooted in balance. January doesn’t have to be about reinventing yourself—it can be about returning to yourself. Reconnecting with what truly supports your well-being. Giving yourself permission to grow at your own pace. Here’s to a year of strength, softness, and intentional wellness. We’re honored to walk this journey with you.

Tempe residents now have a dedicated neighborhood dermatology resource with the arrival of Red Mountain Dermatology, a clinic committed to personalized care and real, visible results. The practice opened its Tempe location near McClintock Drive and Warner Road in December 2023 and joins additional offices in Goodyear and Mesa. Red Mountain Dermatology is part of the family-owned Bingham Dermatology Group, established in 2013. The clinic provides comprehensive care for patients of all ages, treating concerns such as acne, skin cancers, rashes, cysts, and more. Their goal is simple: to be the community’s trusted dermatology home. At the Tempe office, Physician Assistant Adam Turner leads patient care. Adam says building relationships is a core part of their mission. “We want to be close with the people here… We want to be part of the community.” Adam has worked in dermatology for six years and says the specialty offers the perfect balance of medical treatment and hands-on procedures. While diagnosing and treating skin conditions can be challenging, seeing physical improvements in patients is what drives him. “When I have a kid who’s struggled with acne for a year and we’re able to clear their skin, you can physically see the difference— and you see them smiling when they weren’t before,” Adam says. “Being able to see those results reminds you why you do this. It keeps you motivated.” Living in the desert adds unique challenges to skin health, and Adam emphasizes the importance of limiting sun exposure. “Barriers are best—hats, clothing, anything that keeps the skin from getting hit by the sun,” he explains. “While the sun can be good, it causes many of the issues we deal with later in life.” Arizona has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, including melanoma. Because of this, Adam recommends that adults over 30 schedule yearly skin checks, which can lead to early detection and timely treatment. Red Mountain Dermatology continues to expand its reach while staying dedicated to its mission: offering attentive, community-centered care to help every patient feel confident in their skin.

Tempe's vibrant, health-conscious community has a new advocate in its corner. Meet Dr. Heavens, a physician with 25 years of experience in family and acute care medicine, who recently opened a practice dedicated to helping patients live longer, healthier, and more vital lives. His mission is clear: to shift health care from a reactive system that treats illness to a proactive model that prevents it, empowering patients to thrive at every stage of life. Born and trained in Canada, Dr. Heavens has practiced medicine in both Canada and the United States, giving him a seasoned perspective on the human condition and the many stages of life. Over the years, he has treated thousands of patients, gaining insight into the ways environment, lifestyle, and culture shape health outcomes. When he relocated to the Southwest, he began focusing more deeply on geriatrics. Living and working in Arizona, with its large population of older adults, gave him the opportunity to observe aging in real time. “I have seen people aging,” he reflects, “and I have seen people aging well. My goal is to help patients enjoy those years, live fully, and embrace longevity.” This passion for vitality in later life informs the structure of his new practice, which is designed to give patients the tools, attention, and strategies they
need to extend not only lifespan but also health span. At the heart of Dr. Heavens’ philosophy are three simple yet powerful pillars: diet, sleep, and exercise. While all three are essential, he is quick to emphasize one above the rest. “Exercise is the most important practice,” he insists. “I tell all my patients it will be part of every prescription I write.” For him, exercise is not just a recommendation; it is medicine. Regular movement improves cardiovascular health, supports cognitive function, strengthens immunity, and enhances overall quality of life. Combined with good nutrition and restorative sleep, it forms the foundation for long-term vitality. Rather than waiting for illness to appear, Dr. Heavens takes a preventive approach. He identifies risk factors early and intervenes before they lead to chronic disease or acute health crises. “Prevention is powerful,” he says. “When we take steps today, we can avoid years of suffering later.” To bring this preventive model to life, Dr. Heavens partnered with MDVIP, a network that equips physicians with advanced tools and the time necessary to deliver truly personalized care. One standout resource available to his patients is Cleveland Heart Labs testing, a non-invasive and detailed screening for cardiovascular health. These tests can detect risk factors for heart disease and stroke long before symptoms develop, giving patients the opportunity to take action and potentially prevent life-threatening events like heart attacks. His practice also incorporates fitness testing, body composition analysis, gait assessment, and strength testing. These measures are not simply data points; they are indicators of resilience and predictors of future health outcomes. By tracking these metrics over time, Dr. Heavens helps

patients create tailored plans that address their unique needs and goals. What sets Dr. Heavens apart is not only his expertise but also his accessibility. Unlike many traditional practices where patients may wait weeks for an appointment, his new model offers same- or next-day visits and even 24/7 physician availability. “This practice allows me to give the time and personalized attention each patient deserves,” he explains. “I want to look deeply into their health, mitigate risks, and help them build lifestyles that support vitality at every age.” Patients benefit from extended appointment times, direct communication, and a care plan that evolves with them. This combination of advanced diagnostics and individualized attention creates a partnership between doctor and patient—one rooted in prevention, empowerment, and long-term wellness. CONTINUED >

“PREVENTION IS powerful. WHEN WE TAKE STEPS TODAY, WE can avoid YEARS OF SUFFERING LATER.” A VISION FOR TEMPE’S HEALTH-CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY Tempe has long been known as a hub for active, wellness-minded residents—from students and young professionals to retirees seeking a lifestyle that balances activity and relaxation. Dr. Heavens’ arrival adds to this culture, providing a medical anchor for individuals and families committed to healthy living. His practice is not about quick fixes or temporary solutions; it is about building health resilience for the long run. By weaving exercise into treatment, emphasizing nutrition, and encouraging restorative sleep, he equips patients with tools that extend beyond the clinic into everyday life. The impact of this approach is profound. A patient who once felt overwhelmed by the complexity of health advice may now leave with a clear, actionable plan tailored to their goals.

A retiree concerned about losing independence may gain confidence knowing their physician is helping preserve mobility and strength. Younger patients also benefit from strategies that protect their future selves, reducing the risk of chronic disease decades down the line. For Dr. Heavens, longevity is not simply about adding years to life; it is about adding life to years. His work is part of a broader movement within medicine to reimagine health care as a proactive partnership—one that empowers individuals to take charge of their well-being with expert guidance and support. In his words: “I want my patients to feel vibrant, capable, and supported in their pursuit of health. With the right strategies, aging can be a time of growth, energy, and fulfillment.” Visit: https://heavensmedical.com

“Our hearts are not separate from our work—they’re at the center of everything we do.”
When Scott and AnnMarie first crossed paths, neither could have predicted how their shared vision would blossom into Our Hearts Enter; a space where individuals, couples, businesses, and even athletes find the tools to live with clarity, purpose, and unshakable strength. Scott’s journey began in academia, teaching Sustainability and Happiness at Arizona State University. His classes extended far beyond the lecture hall, where he encouraged students not only to expand their minds but also to lead with their hearts. Through initiatives like the Happy Lab, Scott helped young leaders collaborate with local communities, building gardens and food exchanges, and cultivating a deeper sense of responsibility for the world around them. AnnMarie’s path unfolded through decades of service in nonprofit and community-based settings. From counseling youth and families to creating healing spaces for elders, she poured herself into supporting those who often had nowhere else to turn. Whether leading groups, organizing outings, or simply showing up in moments of need, her work was grounded in compassion, resilience, and the belief that every person deserves a safe space to grow. Together, Scott and AnnMarie quickly recognized the power of their combined gifts. What began as parallel work soon evolved into a shared calling. They pursued advanced certifications, deepened their training, and began to hold space together for individuals and groups. Workshops, ceremonies, and CONTINUED >

immersive gatherings emerged. Each designed to help people move beyond limitation and reconnect with their innate power. Today, Our Hearts Enter stands as the natural culmination of their journey. Their offerings range from one-on-one coaching to group workshops, corporate wellness programs, and transformative ceremonies. Every experience is designed to integrate shamanic coaching, purpose alignment, and intuitive development; guiding clients into clarity, embodiment, and soul-aligned strategies for peak performance. “Whether someone comes to us as an individual, a couple, a business leader, or an athlete, the common thread is this: they’re ready to move beyond surface-level success and step into a deeper kind of power,” AnnMarie explains. “That’s where real transformation happens.”

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS
For Scott and AnnMarie, success is not defined by titles, numbers, or achievements alone. It is measured in rootedness- in the ability to navigate life’s challenges with resilience, purpose, and an unwavering sense of self. Their work is not just about transformation: it’s about creating sustainable change that ripples through families, organizations, and communities. “Our hearts are not separate from our work,” Scott adds. “They’re at the center of everything we do. That’s why we chose the name Our Hearts Enter. Because the journey starts and ends in the heart.” With over two decades of combined transformational experience, Scott and AnnMarie are extending an invitation to those who feel the call. “You have built success,” AnnMarie says, “now it is time to root into power that is unshakable.”

Values
Health
Is the most important key to living a full and healthy life hiding from you? There are many factors to consider when thinking about what constitutes health. The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system. Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure. Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment, and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends

to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue. However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful. Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:

5. Speak your values out loud
1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.
2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.
3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.
4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.

There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant. Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking. Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit! When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way. From there, our vibrancy shines to our loved ones, our neighbors and even strangers we see out and about. It becomes not only the best gift you can give yourself, but that of our community. So cheers to 2026, let’s make this the best year yet!

It’s been said that “life is just a bowl of cherries,” and it just so happens that cherries might improve your life. This nutrient-dense, heart-healthy fruit may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, combat inflammation, help the body manage stress, speed recovery after exercise, balance your mood and help you sleep. To say it is a superfood may be an understatement. So it’s only fitting that we include a mocktail recipe with cherries as the star ingredient this month. Let’s drink to health, wellness and a wonderful year ahead! Cheers!
