LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Moment to Reflect

As the year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on what truly matters—family, community, and the quiet ways we show up for one another. December has a way of reminding us that giving isn’t limited to gifts wrapped in ribbon; it’s the time, care, and heart we pour into the people and places around us.

In this issue, we celebrate that spirit of generosity woven through our city. The Royce family’s story reminds us that service can begin in loss and grow into legacy. By the Yard shows how creativity can transform a house into a home. And our Local Gift Guide highlights small businesses whose thoughtful creations capture the meaning of intentional giving.

As you gather with loved ones this season, may you find joy in simple moments, gratitude in connection, and inspiration in the many ways Tempe continues to give—through heart, through service, and through one another. May this time of reflection remind us to slow down, hold our families close, and carry light, love, and community into the year ahead.

With love and gratitude,

JETT

HELENA HILL

For me, design is about giving each client their own individual sense of home. People often ask what’s trending, but trends come and go—and they don’t always create spaces that feel personal or lasting. What matters most is crafting environments that feel deeply connected to the people who live in them.

My clients inspire me the most. Each one, with their own story, gives my work meaning. Getting to know them—seeing their inspiration photos and the fabrics, patterns, and textures they’re drawn to—helps me create spaces that truly bring them joy.

I’ve always loved the light, airy, and colorful aesthetic of Santa Barbara. It captures a balance of ease and vibrancy that I aim to bring into every project. My hope is that when clients step into their finished space, they feel happiness, warmth, and a genuine sense of belonging.

Being part of a business that’s been rooted in Tempe for 38 years feels incredibly special. There’s a deep sense of pride that comes with belonging to a community built on family, tradition, and shared passion. The connection among local, family-run businesses is what makes Tempe truly extraordinary—there’s genuine support and encouragement in every interaction. I love exploring the smaller cafés and restaurants around town, each one filled with character and heart. Still, my favorite place to find inspiration and peace will always be my own backyard—a reminder that home is the greatest gift we can give ourselves.

COLLEEN SIMON

My design style blends classic and transitional elements to create spaces that feel timeless. I focus on clean lines, balanced proportions, and refined details— an elegant aesthetic that feels both sophisticated and inviting. Every element serves a purpose, coming together to create harmony and balance within a space. What truly inspires me are the people I design for. Every project is an opportunity to give something meaningful back—to create spaces that reflect each client as an individual. I aim for designs that are not only visually striking but also thoughtfully tailored to the way they live and work.

I’ve always had a soft spot for patterned fabrics and warm color palettes—especially teals and terracottas—because they bring a sense of life and joy into a room. My goal is always to design spaces that feel like an embrace—welcoming, comfortable, and full of heart.

I’m endlessly grateful for the Tempe business community and the way we all lift each other up. There’s such a genuine spirit of collaboration here—people truly want to see one another succeed. That sense of connection fuels both creativity and purpose in my work. Tempe has this incredible mix of energy and warmth, where ideas flow as easily as friendships form. When I need to recharge, you’ll often find me on Postino’s patio or walking the lakes at ASU Research Park—simple moments that remind me that giving back begins with gratitude, connection, and appreciation for where we are.

ANNETTE BOSTON HALE

I would describe my design style as eclectic and bold—clean lines with a touch of flair. I love creating spaces that feel sophisticated and balanced, where every detail adds something meaningful to the whole and reflects a sense of confidence and individuality.

Collaboration is truly the best part of what I do. I’m constantly inspired by the opportunity to merge a client’s personal style with my own design vision. Together, we create something that feels authentic— something that reflects who they are while still feeling fresh, refined, and elevated.

I’m drawn to a sophisticated, monochromatic aesthetic where black and white form the foundation and warm neutrals add depth and elegance. The result is a space that feels both high-end and livable. My hope is that when people experience my designs, they feel excited, energized, and accomplished—but also grounded and safe.

Being part of the Tempe business community has truly been a gift. There’s a unique energy here—a blend of talent, culture, and creativity that inspires growth and collaboration every day. It’s a place where small businesses lift each other up, creating a sense of connection that goes far beyond design. I’m constantly reminded how fortunate I am to do what I love in a community that values both artistry and heart. When I need a moment to reset, I head to Tempe Town Lake, where the open horizon clears my mind and sparks fresh inspiration.

A Beautiful Smile

ROYCE FAMILY AND THE SPIRIT OF GIVING IN TEMPE

There’s a certain magic in South Tempe—a blend of long-time residents, lush green neighborhoods, and a community spirit that feels both timeless and familiar. For Carol Royce, that magic has been home since 1972. Over the decades, she has become more than a real estate professional; she is a steward of community, connection, and giving back.

“I’ve always had a servant’s heart,” Carol says with a smile that reveals both grit and grace. “Helping people find a home isn’t just business—it’s a calling.”

That calling began from an unexpected place. In 1985, after losing her husband and facing the realities of raising a family without life insurance, Carol leaned on her faith and community to rebuild her life. A friend suggested real estate—a career she had never considered. “It sounded interesting,” she recalls. “So I dove in, and I never looked back.”

BUILDING A LEGACY OF FAMILY AND SERVICE

From those early days of open houses and handshakes, Carol’s business grew into one of the most respected teams in Arizona—The Carol Royce Team. But her story isn’t just about success in sales; it’s about family, heart, and an enduring commitment to serve.

Her daughter, Vikki, graduated from Corona del Sol High School and attended ASU before joining her mother in real estate at just 18. “I loved working with my mom,” Vikki says. “She taught me that what we do is deeply personal—it’s about people’s dreams.”

Soon after, Vikki’s husband, Eric, joined the team, followed by Carol’s son, Tim, and later her grandchildren—Derrick, Katie, and Josh—as well as Carol’s husband, Tom. Today, eight family members and a total of 25 professionals make up the powerhouse Carol Royce Team.

Vikki now leads the luxury division, specializing in Tempe’s premier neighborhoods from Wingfoot to Warner Estates, while Carol serves as the matriarch and mentor. “We’re three generations helping three generations of Tempe

families,” Vikki explains. “Many of our clients’ kids are now buying homes with us. That’s what community looks like—it comes full circle.”

THE BUSINESS OF HEART

It’s not unusual to find Carol or Vikki at an open house that feels more like a neighborhood gathering. “We do things differently,” Carol says. “We don’t just put a sign in the yard and wait. We bring energy, systems, and service. Every step of the process is intentional.”

Their strategy is as much about people as it is about property. “If we can’t find the right home, we find the right lender,” Vikki adds. “We pour everything we can into helping families reach their goals.”

That philosophy has fueled their success—selling hundreds of homes each year—but it’s also built something more lasting: trust. “When you live and work in a community as long as we have,” Carol says, “people know us, and we know them. That’s what makes Tempe so special.”

ROOTED IN TEMPE

Carol laughs remembering a client once asking if she’d sold any homes in a gated Tempe neighborhood. “I told them I’ve sold 18—and a few more than once,” she says. “That’s the beauty of being invested in a place. When you live in the community, you’re not just selling homes—you’re helping shape it.”

That connection keeps people coming back. “South Tempe is special,” she says. “People move away, but they always find their way home.”

As the holiday lights twinkle across Tempe, Carol reflects on nearly four decades of service to her clients, her city, and her family. “We love what we do,” she says simply. “If we didn’t, we wouldn’t have done it this long.”

Her story is one of resilience, faith, and the power of giving—a reminder that service can begin in loss and grow into legacy.

For Carol Royce, the higher calling isn’t just in selling homes; it’s in helping others find theirs.

Giving Back, Season After Season

Carol’s impact reaches far beyond real estate. Her community leadership helped shape Tempe itself—from being instrumental in merging the Tempe Boys & Girls Club, the first in the nation to integrate girls, to serving countless civic and nonprofit organizations. Each year, The Carol Royce Team donates between $35,000 and $50,000 to Save the Family, supporting homeless families. They also provide full Thanksgiving meals for 25 families, participate in back-to-school drives, and adopt families during the holidays. “Giving isn’t seasonal for us,” Carol says. “It’s woven into everything we do.” The team extends discounts to veterans and first responders—a reflection of their gratitude for those who serve—and through their network of trusted trades and service providers, they continue supporting clients long after closing day.

Millions of twinkling lights. Beautifully lit trails filled with dazzling displays. Festive music to help put you in the holiday spirit. These are just a few of the many reasons why ZooLights at the Phoenix Zoo is one of Arizona’s most beloved holiday traditions. As Linda Hardwick, Vice President of Marketing, Communications & Events at the Phoenix Zoo notes, for

“ZooLights features more than 4 million lights and hundreds of lighted armatures from sparkling flamingos to glowing giraffes.”

over three decades, nearly 300,000 guests make their way to the Zoo each season to experience one of the largest holiday attractions in the Southwest.

“ZooLights features more than 4 million lights and hundreds of lighted armatures from sparkling flamingos to glowing giraffes,” Hardwick says, adding that it takes a dedicated team of six staff nearly 10 months to design, build and install the displays each year.

“The result is pure holiday magic!”

A number of new displays will be featured this year, Hardwick says, including more than 50 brand-new

wildlife lanterns glowing throughout the Zoo—each one bringing the night to life in brilliant color.

“Also, the whimsical Storybook Nook will feature Mabel’s Fables, a talking tree who delights guests nightly with magical tales and charming fables,” she says.

Jengo the Talking Giraffe will also make his longawaited return, ready to share laughs and holiday cheer.

And for those eager to explore something truly wild, Hardwick says the Zoo is introducing an all-new virtual reality adventure that immerses guests in stunning 360° animal encounters like never before.

People can take their time as they stroll through the beautifully lit trails, admiring the larger-than-life animal lanterns—all while taking in the magic of the season, surrounded by one of the most unique settings in the Valley.

ZooLights shines bright every night from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. through Friday, January 16.

For those who prefer to enjoy the magic from the comfort of their own car, the Zoo will host a night of Cruise ZooLights on Sunday, January 18.

“Guests can make their night even brighter with glow souvenirs, commemorative photos and warm up with hot chocolate, kettle corn and other seasonal treats available along the drive-thru pathway,” Hardwick says.

“ZooLights is a joyful, family-friendly experience that brings people of all ages together to celebrate the holidays in a truly ‘wild’ way.”
