We List & Sell Exceptional Homes in SW Lake County
Planning To Sell This Fall?
ENHANCE YOUR CHANCE WITH THESE 3 EXTERIOR PROJECTS:
1. Curb Appeal: Enhance the curb appeal of your home by tidying up the exterior. Rake and remove fallen leaves, trim overgrown bushes, and mow the lawn to present a neat and well-maintained appearance. Add some autumnal charm with potted plants or seasonal flowers, such as chrysanthemums, to add a pop of color and warmth.
2. Gutter and Roof Maintenance: As the fall season brings more rain and potential storms, make sure to clean out the gutters and inspect the roof for any damages or leaks. Proper gutter maintenance prevents water buildup and potential damage to the home's foundation. A well-maintained roof adds to the overall appeal and reassures potential buyers that the property is in good condition.
3. Outdoor Lighting: Days get shorter in the fall, and potential buyers may visit your property during darker hours. Invest in outdoor lighting to showcase the exterior of your home during evenings. Install lights along the entryway and pathways, as well as in the backyard to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Adequate lighting not only improves safety but also highlights the best features of your home even after the sun sets.
By focusing on these key elements, you can significantly boost the beauty of your home in the fall season and impress potential buyers looking for their next cozy abode.

Here’s to Being Uniquely You
Let’s take a moment to celebrate the fascinating world of style.
Style is not limited to the clothes we wear; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our lives. It is one of the threads in the tapestry of our lives.
Style is deeply personal, and it evolves as we age, celebrate our quirks, passions and desires. Style is also a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.
As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps further explore familiar ones. Every month the team at SW Lake presents fresh content that we hope uplifts your spirits, boosts your productivity and ignites your creativity.
What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

ROOTED. INVOLVED. DEDICATED.
Since 1971, my family has called this area home. As a real estate agent, I’ve been fortunate to witness the warmth and togetherness that make our area special. From the joyful Wine Walk to the spirited LeCompte/Kalaway Cup, our local events celebrate the heart of our community. I enjoy playing on the pickleball courts of Lake Zurich and attending the nearby farmer’s market. I am honored to be involved as a member of the Barrington Chamber of Commerce for 12 years, and I look forward to continuing to serve this remarkable place that holds a special place in my heart.
If someone you know is considering making the northwest suburbs their home, I’d be delighted to help them find the perfect place to be part of this vibrant and welcoming community.

“An Evening of Enlightenment,” the Sixth Annual Event for the GPF Foundation, is the organization’s principal fundraising event to be held October 12 at Northmoor Country Club (Highland Park).
The keynote speaker is Don Winslow, noted author of 24 books, including a ground-breaking trilogy on the Central and South American drug cartels (The Power of the Dog, The Cartel and The Border ).
Winslow has received numerous writing honors, including the Raymond Chandler Award (2012), Maltese Falcon Award (1994, 2010 and 2011), and Shamus Award (2010). His books have been adapted for both film and television. In 2022, Winslow announced his retirement from writing, to focus on political video-making and activism.
A special video interview will feature Duke University Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Jon Scheyer. A graduate of Glenbrook North High School, Scheyer led his team to a state championship in 2005. A year later he was named Illinois’ Mr. Basketball. While a player at Duke, Scheyer captained the team that won the 2010 NCAA Men’s Championship. In 2013 Scheyer joined Duke’s coaching staff; in 2021 he replaced the legendary Mike Krzyzewski as head coach.

GPF Foundation.
The GPF Foundation (GPFF) was established in 2018 through an outpouring of love by close friends and the Friedman family in honor of Gregory Paul Friedman. The GPFF is committed to saving lives by supporting education, appropriate treatment, and overall awareness of the dangers of “modern day Russian roulette” related to recreational drug use, utilizing a harm reduction approach.
RECENT GPFF-FUNDED INITIATIVES INCLUDE:
• A medical simulation tool that helps physicians, emergency room personnel and medical/health profession students diagnose and treat patients suspected to have overdosed on street drugs. To date, the tool has been used more than 90,000 times by medical personnel globally.
• Creation of a first-responder training session to help public safety officers best identify and obtain help for people experiencing substance-related emergencies. The program launched recently with the Glencoe Public Safety Department.
• Publication of an article in the medical journal, Pediatric Annals, that gives pediatric and adolescent health care providers practical knowledge to effectively perform substance use screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment to help reduce drug-related morbidity and mortality among adolescents.
“Our focus on harm reduction education is very different from the ‘Just Say No’ culture of the past,” according to Ross Friedman, President of the GPF Foundation. “We’re realistic and teach young people how to keep themselves and others safe. The GPF Foundation was created to give people the knowledge to protect themselves and assist the medical community in developing appropriate related treatment.”

Fitness is Stylish
The Greatest Fashion Statement Is Personal Fitness That Radiates Confidence and Strength
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEAN LEEThere’s no trend hotter or accessory more coveted than a finely sculpted physique. A fit body radiates confidence, strength, and self-respect. It isn’t just about the clothes you wear, but the body that they sit on, and the ideal body is NOT necessarily a skinny one, but a fit one.
Fitness is not simply a lack of illness and disease, but a holistic state of well-being, where your mental, physical and emotional health are all in sync.
When what you see (your body) and how you feel (your mind) are aligned, you live in an emotional state of harmony. Your insecurities step aside, and you give the world a clear and consistent message: I feel good about “me”.
I find many people think of exercise in the context of cardio, crunches, sweat-dripping high intensity workouts, and flawless fitness models on the cover of a magazine. I used to
think that’s what exercise was too. Society tells us it is. But moving your body is about so much more! Like improved thinking. Stronger relationships. Expressing confidence in all things you do. Happiness and strength in all aspects of life.
Exercise releases endorphins (your body’s natural “happy drug”), cleanses your mind and delivers a sense of self-accomplishment and gratification. The mood-enhancing benefits of exercise for just 20 minutes a day can last up to 12 hours, or longer. Exercise gives your body tone, shape and a body you can be proud of. People of all shapes and sizes say they have a better quality of life, with fewer physical limitations, when they are physically active.
You see, fitness and fashion share a common thread. They both can make you feel transformed and allow you to exude the best possible version of yourself.

STAGING WITH STYLE
CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE POTENTIAL BUYERS EASILY IMAGINE BRINGING THEIR OWN STYLE TO A HOME.
“Home staging is the preparation of a private residence for sale in the real estate marketplace. The goal of staging is to make a home appealing to the highest number of potential buyers, thereby selling the property more swiftly and for more money.” (Source: Wikipedia)
Renee Clark, a prominent local Realtor — and owner of Renee Clark Homes — has worked with hundreds of families on her way to becoming a top producer for At Properties. She understands what buyers are looking for in a home, and just as importantly, what they don’t want to see.
SW Lake talked to Renee about a higher way to stage a home to meet the twin objectives of a timely sale for the right price.
SW LAKE (SWL): LET’S START WITH WHY HOMEOWNERS SHOULD STAGE A HOME THAT IS FOR SALE?
Renee Clark (RC): The process of staging a home is somewhat counterintuitive, as we “undecorate” a home to make it easier for a buyer to imagine their own furniture and accessories in it. This involves not only choosing neutral colors but knowing where to put pops of color — artwork, green plants and accessories — to create a feeling of peace and serenity.
SWL: WHAT’S THE GOAL WITH STAGING?
RC: First and foremost is to set the stage for the best possible photographs. Especially in this market, where prospective buyers may only get one look at the property in person, the photographs are considered the first showing, and have become more important than ever.
ROW 1
LEFT: In this bedroom, everything was set up for living, not for showing.
RIGHT: The lovely bedroom set was kept, repositioned and clutter swept away. Window treatments were changed to flood the space with more natural light.
ROW 2
LEFT: Too many personal touches. Heavy drapery, tablecloth and smallish photos detract from the stately décor.
RIGHT: Light floods in, and the furniture really shows the room. A statement art piece and pop of color on the table make the space much more inviting.
ROW 3
LEFT: In this family room there are items stored under the pool table and a general sense of tiredness.
RIGHT: Now the space seems larger with the clutter gone and a “temporary” area rug adding a bit of flair.
ROW 4
LEFT: This entry is chock full of personal objects that detract from the appealing nature of the flooring and staircase.
RIGHT: Now the same entry has a certain “wow” factor enhanced by a big statement mirror.
homes sell 73
faster
SWL: DOES STAGING LEAD TO QUICKER, HIGHER-PRICED SALES?
RC: According to the Home Staging Institute, staged homes sell 73 percent faster than homes that are not staged. More than 65 percent of 900 Realtors surveyed believe that home staging helps sell a house for more money. In fact, most real estate agents believe that home staging increases a property’s selling price as much as 10 percent.
SWL: HOW DOES STAGING WORK?
RC: I bring the stager to the home to see everything there for a consultation, to meet with and make recommendations to the seller. The staging company comes back for “hands on staging” to make final tweaks with furniture placement, adding artwork and pillows, arranging shelving, and more. By the way, Renee Clark Homes covers all costs for staging which, depending on the home, can be significant.
SWL: CAN YOU SHARE DETAILS ABOUT ANY ESPECIALLY CHALLENGING STAGINGS YOU’VE DONE OVER THE YEARS?
RC: Staging is something most people don’t understand until they experience it. Recently, we worked with a couple who initially felt that the staging was inconsistent with their home’s stature. We explained that the staging was designed to put their home in the best possible light so that it appealed to younger buyers. As it turned out our extra effort paid off and the sellers were delighted to accept an offer that exceeded their expectations.
SWL: THINKING ABOUT SOMEBODY WHO’S NOT QUITE READY TO SELL, DOES STAGING STILL PROVIDE VALUE FOR ANYBODY STAYING IN THEIR HOME?
RC: If someone is planning to sell within 6-12 months, it may be worthwhile to have a stager come in for a consultation sooner rather than later. That gives sellers the time to “pre-pack” items that are no longer needed on a regular basis. And if someone is considering selling during the winter months, or even in the early spring, we suggest reaching out to us now. We can schedule the outdoor photos while everything is beautiful, and we can take interior photos with summer/fall foliage showing through the windows instead of the typically stark views of winter.

The Magic Dragon
Make a Statement With This Stylish Cocktail
INSTRUCTIONS
Infused Gin: Infuse 1 whole peeled and cut cucumber in gin for a week. Strain the cucumbers out. Add 1 tablespoon of organic dragonfruit powder and mix very well with a whisk. To make the syrup, toast 1/2 cup of black sesame at 350 for 10 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. In a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted black sesame, but not too fine. Add the sesame into one bottle of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum. Let that set for about 2 to 3 days and use cheese cloth to strain out the fine bits of sesame. Juice one fresh lime and strain to remove the pulp.
Cocktail: Paint a strip of simple syrup down a Collins glass. Take a spoon full of Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with black sesame and layer that down where the painted simple syrup was placed. In a shaker tin combine: 1 1/2oz cucumber dragon fruit gin, 3/4oz toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum, and 1/2oz lime juice and shake that up! Fill the painted glass with ice (I use crushed ice) and strain over the ice. Top with your favorite ginger beer (my choice is fever tree ginger beer).

THE little BLACK DRESS
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES STYLIST: AMANI SKALACKIMost of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straightlined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.
THE POPULARITY OF THE BLACK DRESS SKYROCKETED and IT BECAME ONE
OF THE MOST influential PIECES OF CLOTHING.
“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says. “I selected this collection of dresses to show the versatility of the black dress and to give women some new ideas of how to wear the evening gown with a train on a night out with her girlfriends or the traditional summer strappy maxi dress while running errands in cooler temperatures.”
Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.
“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”
We know that compassionate care must include both mind and body, so we have created a different kind of clinic—warm, relaxing and comfortable. We provide one-on-one care each session exclusively with your physical therapist to help you meet your pelvic health and orthopedic treatment goals.
Our Mission
The
appropriate treatment and overall awareness of the dangers related to recreational drug use.
ALTHOUGH BLACK IS A timeless, classic LOOK, THAT DOESN’T MEAN IT GOES WITHOUT personality . YOU CAN MAKE IT YOUR OWN STYLE BY accessorizing TO INFUSE NEW LIFE INTO A DRESS THAT YOU ALREADY OWN.
Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type? Amani provided this simple guide:
HOURGLASS FIGURE:
• V-necklines
• Cinched-in waistlines
• Tailored/fitted dresses
PEAR OR TRIANGLE FIGURE:
