I must confess: much of my personal exploring during winter’s variously-blustery months took place via 77 diagonal inches of Organic LightEmitting Diodes cranking out their crispest High Dynamic Range while their 8,294,400 pixels each flashed-and-danced up to 120 times per second. (That’s tech-spec-speak for, “I been watchin’ too much TV.”) It’s interesting to see some of TV’s longest-lived franchises continue cranking out new spinoffs, sidebars, sequels and prequels (some for the better, many for the worse). One that’s done it best IMHO is the Star Trek universe; so many Captains, so little time! From Kirk to Picard (my fave), Sisko, Janeway, Archer, Lorka, Pike, Saru, and Burnham (with more to come), they’ve each flashed plenty of swash in their buckle while seeking out new life and new civilizations. While each new series adds its own style and spin, I believe the whole enterprise (pun intended) benefits from its sturdy-backbone-of-a-motto driving its many missions: “To boldly go where no one has gone before.” As spring continues springing forth, we in and around SW Lake Co. have so many opportunities to explore; several where you may not have gone before are highlighted right here in this issue. One of the most fun and truly unique spots around just up the road is the Volo Museum, whose campus is an ever-expanding wonder of vintage cars (to view or to buy), antique shops, entertainment, a dinosaur park, and more. They recently partnered with American Garage Floor Systems on a complete renovation of their showroom floors; see the sheen in our article “Fresh Look." Frequent contributor Kimberly Blaker shares helpful advice on how to safely launch your kids on great local summer camp experiences in her article “Child Adventure,” walking through the steps to successful selections and booking the right camp for your own family. ADVENTURE Whether you're looking for enrichment for your child, a way to keep your kids supervised while you work, or just a short reprieve from daytime parenting, there's sure to be a summer camp that's the right fit for your family.
SUMMER CAMP BENEFITS Summer camp offers kids plenty of benefits, and many kids thrill at the idea of going away to summer camp. For some kids not ready for a sleepover camp, particularly those who are shy, introverted or homebodies, the thought of separation from the family can cause considerable anxiety. For any child willing to give it a shot, attending a summertime day camp offers opportunities kids may not have elsewhere. A summer day camp provides kids with benefits that help them: • Foster independence • Develop new friendships • Learn new skills • Discover new interests • Express creativity • Unplug from devices or being online • Get more exercise • Improve self-esteem • Minimize summer learning loss Parents will appreciate the support provided from a summer day camp to build these kinds of skills for their children. Now, let’s look at how to choose the best camp for your kids.

START A SEARCH Before you begin looking into summer camps, create a list of the criteria you're looking for, such as budget, purpose of camp, duration, proximity and your child’s interests. Once you've narrowed down your criteria, start looking. Local media (such as SW Lake), parenting blogs, asking friends, or searching online can all help. The American Camp Association (ACA) accredits summer camps that comply with health, safety, and programming criteria. Once your list is narrowed to a manageable selection, you'll want to investigate the camps further to learn about the following: Health Issues: If you feel your child is at risk healthwise, consider a camp that offers virtual programs so kids can benefit from summer camp without the risk of contracting and spreading ailments like strep throat, COVID-19 or RSV. Virtual summer camps range from a couple of hours a day to all-day camps offering a broad range of virtual activities led by counselors. Staff Qualifications: Many camps use teens as staff. Teens make excellent mentors and can bring liveliness to summer camp programs. The programs themselves, however, should be developed by professionals who have the knowledge to ensure kids are getting the most from the experience. Safety Protocols: Find out what kind of safety training the camp provides its staffers, and whether there is always staff on hand who know basic first aid and CPR. What are the camp's procedures in the event your child becomes ill, has an accident, or there’s an emergency? Daily Schedule: Ask for a daily itinerary, including meal and snack offerings, so you know your child will be getting everything you anticipate from the program. Figure Out Commuting: Time spent driving to and from camp can be a drain on both parents and children. Summer day camps that offer busing options are a great feature to look for.
DON'T SWEAT IT Keep in mind that, although there are many great camps, no one camp is likely to offer everything precisely the way you want it. Choose the one that best fits your child and satisfies your most important criteria. Four generations of the Grams Family have welcomed visitors to the Volo Auto Museum. The expansive tourist attraction draws enthusiasts from across the country to walk down row-after-row of classic, antique, oneof-a-kind and souped-up vehicles of every make, model, and era. Millions of footsteps annually mark the floors of the museum that sprawls across several acres just west of Highway 12 in Volo. Since many of the vehicles in the collection are for sale, they are continually being driven in, around and out of the showrooms. Over the years, the floors take quite a beating. Grams started investigating options for upgrading the floors. Originally, the plan was to first complete a small-scale project, in effect a trial, before a much larger upgrade. Grams reached out to a nearby Wauconda business – American Garage Floor Systems (AGS) – run by family patriarch Tim Meade. For several years now AGS has been the go-to contractor for flooring updates; typically, the company upgrades garages and basement floors for family homes, but has tackled more complex commercial properties from airplane hangars to even the private club at NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates. Jon Pierce managed the project from start-to-finish for AGS. The trial project was a kitchen floor at the Grams Central Station restaurant. AGS removed tiling, made any needed repairs and leveled the concrete base floor before applying a polyaspartic coating that is 4-times stronger than epoxy with no-fade colors that can be walked on a day after installation. Grams liked the result and committed to re-doing all the auto showrooms, as well as the Party Barn, a space with private
rooms in a refurbished barn. For the showrooms, it was a coordinated effort with the museum staff moving all vehicles out for the demolition and rebuilding of floors. When one showroom was completed, the cars moved back in and it was on to the next showroom. In all, more than 35,000 square feet of new flooring was installed by American Garage Floor Systems. The floors have a color scheme that delineates between display areas and visitor walking lanes. The Contractor’s Journey Owning & Managing Your Own Business ARTICLE BY STEVEN SINGLETON PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL BEIGHTOL I’ve had three phases to my career: U.S. Navy, financial services, and the owner of 360 Painting of Lake County. A few years ago, I was ready for a change. When I left Corporate America after 15 years I wanted to build a sustainable business based on high standards, integrity, and sound management. I looked at many different businesses when considering what to do next. One thing I kept noticing about my neighborhood was the number of painters at work. Becoming a painting contractor was appealing because I could work locally by helping families maintain and protect the investment in their homes. The 360 Painting corporate team is a big plus. I get support for marketing, IT, training and a call center that sets my appointments. There’s also a business coach and hands-on support. Early on I bet I called them at least once a day. Working with homeowners is about finding the right solution. First, I go to their home to learn about their lifestyle, wants and needs, budget and color choices. I also take lots of photos and precise measurements. After every new customer visit, I email a proposal within four hours. A follow-up call is held the very next day to review the plan, tweak the budget and schedule the job. On the first day working on-site, my crew chief and I completely review the plan with the homeowner, walk the property, make any adjustments and finalize everything. Then the crew goes to work. Day One is the most critical time for any job. Our preparation is so thorough that the actual painting is significantly more efficient. Painting – whether exterior or interior – is highly technical. That’s why all my painters must have a minimum of 10 years prior experience before we even interview them. Once hired, they're all subject to regular assessments and training. Steven Singleton My wife, Maia, and I live in Hawthorn Woods with our 11-year-old son, Evan, who plays on a travel basketball team. Between his schoolwork, practices and tournaments we keep very busy. Last summer we had six crews, including one dedicated to homes at Wynstone Country Club. Word got around about our work, and one job led to another. A typical day for me is filled with meeting prospective customers, developing proposals, and visiting every job site to assess the work done by the crews. I’m known as tough, but fair. We take pride in our work, and it shows. Now, with eight crews (typically 3-4 painters each), we are ready for the outdoor painting season. In 2023 we will double our business in just four years. So yeah, owning my own business has worked out beautifully.
