In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us who have helped in our journey can leave us missing out on what truly matters. Family-Owned Wine and Spirits Shop Opens in Lake Zurich Lake Liquors, a new family-owned business, opened recently in Lake Zurich at 103 S. Rand Road. The shop is making a name for itself with customized personal service. Co-owner Anil Nayi (4th from left in photo) says the shop features top sellers and hard-to-find brands with limited distribution. In just a few weeks after opening, they are drawing customers from as far away as Wisconsin since its inventory is available online.

When Dinosaurs Roamed Dinosaurs are coming to the Bess Bower Dunn Museum in a special exhibit, October 7 — January 15; see bones and fossils, and even touch full skeletal molds for a Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus rex and Velociraptor. “People’s imaginations work overtime when it comes to developing their understanding of dinosaurs,” said Dunn Museum's Nan Buckardt. Area Food Pantries Address a Pressing Concern for Too Many Families Living With Food Insecurity.

For most readers of SW Lake, our corner of the world looks like one of abundance. Whether it’s great schools, the semi-rural setting, a plethora of parks and sporting activities, or adjacency to big city amenities and career opportunities, life here is pretty good. This month with Thanksgiving around the corner it feels like we are living in a land of plenty with much to be thankful for. If that were just the case for all residents. In fact, across Lake County, the reality is very different for some of our neighbors, such as the nearly 26,000 estimated to be living with food insecurity. That’s 11.2% of the county’s population, which equates to about 1 in 9 residents. In a report from the Northern Illinois Food Bank network (which serves 13 counties, including Lake) there has been a 30% increase in the total number of people served this year, compared to 375,000 in 2022. The number served has increased by 70% from the 285,000 helped in 2019. Before the pandemic, national food insecurity levels were at a 20-year low, according to Feeding America, one of the largest hunger relief organizations in the United States. Coming out of the pandemic, the ugly reality of inflation, while affecting everybody, poses a particular hardship for our poorer neighbors. The escalation in

food prices, while stabilizing recently, still means that more money from every paycheck is needed to put food on a family’s table. Pre-inflation, 30% of Lake County households struggled to afford basic needs, according to Feed Lake County, an initiative of the United Way of Lake County. This includes the working poor (23% of county residents) and those living in poverty (7%). Many households that experience food insecurity do not qualify for federal nutrition programs, especially among the working poor. The large price hikes in food and other basic needs have hit the working poor and middle class the hardest. According to a report by CBSNews.com, more people are turning to food banks to eat. To combat food insecurity there are resources nearby. These are all charitable operations that depend on volunteers, as well as donations of cash to stay in operation. Please consider making a donation to any of the local food pantries tackling this issue head-on. It could be as easy as dropping groceries off at a local food pantry or digging a little deeper and making a cash donation. And once you start, see if you can make it a sustainable act of kindness.

Food Pantries Making a Difference St. Vincent de Paul St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry (135 S. Buesching Rd., Lake Zurich), open every Thursday from 5:15 p.m. to 7 p.m., provides about 10 meals to each of the approximately 500 people who visit weekly. Learn more at svdplz.org.

Hope Center Food Pantry Open Saturdays 8 a.m.; shopping starts at 9 a.m. at 23153 West Miller Road, Lake Zurich. Food selection changes from week-to-week but generally includes meat, dairy, bread, produce, snacks, canned goods, pet food, and cereal. Visit TheHopeCenter.com/Pantry.

Cuba Township Food Pantry Provides non-perishable foods, paper products, cleaning supplies, and toiletries to a list of qualified recipients. Call 847.381.1924 to learn about qualifications. Food donations are accepted Monday – Friday between 9 a.m and 4 p.m. at 28000 W. Cuba Road, Barrington.

Crystal Lake Food Pantry Open six days a week at 42 East Street. Needed grocery items are always listed on its website (CLFoodPantry.org). Originally launched as an effort of eight churches, it is now supported by 20 local churches.

Tucked between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Santa Barbara (CA) stands out from other coastal cities with its iconic Spanish-influenced architecture, sparkling seas, palm-lined paths, walkable downtown and waterfront, vibrant culinary scene, and easily-navigable Urban Wine Trail. Santa Barbara is known for its lively events and festivals throughout the year, and Thanksgiving is no exception. The city comes alive with special holiday events that add a festive touch to a visit. One highlight is the annual Santa Barbara Turkey Trot, a family-friendly 5k run/walk that takes place on Thanksgiving morning. Wine, beer, and architecture tours will be taking place throughout the month (reservations recommended). Restaurants will be offering multi-course meals from brunch through supper. Additionally, the city’s cultural venues, such as the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and Lotusland, often host special Thanksgiving-themed events, including art exhibits, garden tours, and workshops providing insight into the cultural heritage of the region. Santa Barbara offers a delightful blend of natural beauty and beaches,

outdoor activities, a vibrant culinary scene, shopping, and holiday traditions that make it a fantastic destination for Thanksgiving. After a long weekend in Santa Barbara, visitors typically leave refreshed and thankful.

SAILING AND SEASIDE SERENITY Santa Barbara’s winter season is known for stunning clear skies, mild temperatures, and dramatic coastal sunsets. The region’s unique south-facing coastline makes for a sailing paradise, with a palm-lined shore and gorgeous mountains backdropping the sea. Visitors can rent sailboats of all sizes at the Santa Barbara Harbor, join an intimate coastal charter with SunSwept Sailing, or hop on a cocktail sunset cruise with Santa Barbara Sailing Center. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a novice, local charters and sailing tours cater to all levels, making it an excellent way to bond with family and friends.

SCENIC HIKING TRAILS November and December are great months for those who prefer to explore on foot along an impressive network of hiking trails. Trailheads are all within a 5-to-15-minute drive from downtown, making them easily accessible compared

The Santa Ynez Mountains provide a stunning backdrop to the city, and hiking through the Los Padres National Forest offers a perfect opportunity to connect with nature. Whether it’s along the coastal bluffs at Douglas Family Preserve, up into the hillier Rattlesnake Canyon region, or the iconic Inspiration Point with panoramic views, hiking is one of the most satisfying things to do in Santa Barbara.

MEMORABLE DINING Sailing and hiking build up an appetite. With a year-round growing season and sustainable seafood caught fresh every day in the Santa Barbara Channel, Santa Barbara County offers up the raw ingredients for an unforgettable taste vacation. Experience the area’s agricultural and culinary scene by visiting local farmers markets, meeting purveyors and savoring regional delicacies. When cooking pioneer Julia Child retired to Montecito, the Saturday downtown farmers market was her regular stop. Visitors may enjoy taking a guided tasting tour with Eat This, Shoot That!, Santa Barbara Tasting Tours, or Bouchon restaurant’s Foodie Stroll. The State Street Promenade—a pandemic silver lining—has revitalized the downtown corridor, with its mile-long street closure allowing restaurants, bars and pedestrians to expand into the streets. The promenade has lent a festive, European atmosphere to the city, and selecting a restaurant here is an excellent choice. Other neighborhoods worthy of checking out the food scene include the Presidio Neighborhood, the waterfront and Funk Zone, and nearby Goleta and Montecito. When you’re ready to step it up to fine dining, there are 14 Michelin Guide-listed restaurants, a notable feat for the small city. Many local eateries are offering specialty menus during the Thanksgiving season.

WINE TIME Santa Barbara County is one of the most diverse wine-growing regions in the world with more than 275 wineries. The unique east-west orientation of the region’s mountain helps create a wide variety of microclimates ideal for growing more than 80 varietals of grapes. Primarily produced by smaller, family-owned boutique wineries, its wines are highly acclaimed by connoisseurs. One of the easiest ways to get to know regional wines is through the tasting rooms of the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, most of which are located in walkable downtown Santa Barbara. Comprised of nearly 30 member wineries, many within walking distance of hotels and downtown beaches, the trail has some new tasting rooms, including Longoria Wines, La Lieff Wines and Frequency Wine Co.

SHOPPING Santa Barbara’s shopping scene is another reason to visit during Thanksgiving. Stroll along State Street and explore the charming boutiques, art galleries, and specialty shops lining the iconic shopping promenade. Every Sunday from 10 a.m. until dusk, the long-running Santa Barbara Arts & Crafts Show features original works for sale from 200 Santa Barbara County artists on Cabrillo Boulevard, bordering East Beach. Mujeres Makers Markets pop up at different locations on the first Sundays of the month to showcase artisanal goods made by creative women of color. In downtown Santa Barbara, La Arcada and El Paseo (California’s first) date back to the 1920s and are home to a mix of wine-tasting rooms and eclectic boutiques. Arlington Court, adjacent to the Arlington Theater, boasts local contemporary retailer, Diani, and its sister boutiques. Further afield, Montecito Country Mart is a curated collection of one-of-a-kind boutiques offering homewares and fashion from the latest designers. Additionally, Summerland (a few miles south of Santa Barbara) is a mecca for the interior design set that has been cemented after a flurry of chic home decor and antique store openings in recent years, including Field + Fort, The Well, Porch, Garde and more. Whether you’re seeking unique holiday gifts or treating yourself to some retail therapy, you’ll find a wide array of options in Santa Barbara. In the heart of every dreamer, visionary, and small business owner, I’ve discovered a shared love for work. Many struggle, however, in finding what’s needed for success. I’ve spent a big portion of my career working with typical Mom & Pop businesses which has given me insights into the difficulties of entrepreneurism. Here’s a quick story about the owner of a distribution company that sold products to small companies. He was a selfless man who went out of his way to help customers (mostly family-owned businesses). If a shop was failing, he was the first to extend them credit, lend a hand, and see if there was a way to ride out the storm. That inspired me and is one reason why I am following in his footsteps. In my early days, I was on the trade show circuit, representing a company I worked for, but also leading workshops on marketing, sales and employee retention. And in many respects, I learned as much from the business owners as they perhaps learned from me. I still do a fair amount of teaching and coaching, but for a while, I’ve been thinking about how to reach a broader audience of more businesses. It dawned on me that maybe it was time for me to write a book to get what I’ve learned out to potentially more people. To be fair (full disclosure here), my book — “What’s Your Bacon?” — is more like a workbook of tried and tested ideas that have helped others find success. Don’t expect a rigid narrative structure; depending on what the reader might need at any given time, they can jump to any chapter and find something that benefits them at the moment.

To commemorate World Peace Day on September 21, the team behind the Ela Peace Project (EPP) presented Illinois’ tallest peace pole as a gift to Ela Township. It was a project three years in the making. The idea of a peace pole started in Japan following World War II. Peace poles have since spread all over the world. Ela’s stainless-steel structure is 15 feet tall with laser inscriptions of the word “Peace” in each of the 60 languages spoken in SW Lake County. The peace pole is secured to a concrete pad, lighted from within, and looks stunning at night. It is meant to celebrate the diversity of our community and welcome members with love and acceptance. The rain held off on the warm fall evening of its official dedication that included handmade peace flags and a large crowd of community members of all ages, including Lake Zurich Mayor Tom Poynton and Illinois State Representative Nabeela Syed. Before the official presentation, community members were encouraged to write down their hopes for the future to be sealed in a time capsule not to be opened until World Peace Day in 2073. EPP Co-founder Shari Gullo explained what the peace pole means to her. “Our community benefits from a visual reminder that we are a diverse community and that everyone belongs here regardless of the language they speak, the color of their skin, or any other quality they embody.” Gullo continued, “For me, and I’m sure our entire team would agree, the peace pole is not only about peace, but ultimately about love.” Gullo worked closely with co-founder Pamela Self, Cathy McCauley, and Alicia Timm. During the presentation, several members of the team offered their perspectives on the peace pole.

Self, a landscape architect, designed the pole. She shared a quote from Robert Louis Stevenson, author of “Treasure Island,” who as a boy, saw lamp lighters illuminating streetlights and by doing so “punching a hole in the darkness.” She hoped the Ela Peace Pole would do the same here. McCauley added: “Every community needs reminders of peace. Every community needs people who are willing to work together to accomplish something good. Every community needs a peace pole. It was a labor of love.” In accepting the gift on behalf of Ela Township, Supervisor Gloria Palmblad echoed the engraving on the pole itself saying, “May peace prevail on earth.” The evening ended with a festive rendition of the Hokey Pokey. According to WorldPeace.org, the founders of the original Peace Pole Project, there are an estimated 250,000 peace poles in 180 countries around the world.

Each November brings the opportunity for special moments with family and friends as we sprint headlong into the holidays. A newer tradition gaining tremendous traction is incorporating a “Turkey Trot” into Thanksgiving Day; it’s a great fit, blending in a family-friendly, healthy run-or-walk event to help absolve all guilt from the full-on feast that frequently follows at home amidst the scrum of football games, the AKC National Dog Show and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The largest Turkey Trot in the area fires its starting cannon at 9 a.m. November 23 at Main Street Center in Wauconda, sponsored by STAR Charities in support of the Wauconda/ Island Lake Food Pantry. STAR was founded by Progressive Components, a global supplier to the tooling and molding industry based in Wauconda’s Business Park, owned by Don and Glenn Starkey. This year marks STAR’s 20th anniversary as a certified 501(c)(3) organization. Over that span more than one million dollars has been raised to support local charities, including over $150,000 for the Wauconda/Island Lake Food Pantry focused on feeding local families in need. Trista Iodice, Director of STAR Charities, describes the organization’s goal concisely and with conviction. “STAR stands for ‘Sharing Time and Resources’, which is exactly what we do. We’re an entirely volunteer-run organization that helps other volunteer organizations fulfill their purpose and their mission.” In the last year alone, STAR has supported causes including the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Nicasa Behavioral Health Services, Amina Grace Memorial Fund promoting acceptance of people with Down syndrome, the 4North Project, Keeping Families Covered, Lake County Haven, Alec Harju Brain Tumor & Stroke Survivor Fund, Cotton Creek School Supply drive, Jeeps on the Run, and more. Special fundraising events beyond the Turkey Trot this year include the 11th Annual Wauconda Coat Drive and the Easter-week Bunny Hop race, among others.

Registered participants receive T-shirts, finisher’s medals and snacks after the race, with trophies awarded to the fastest 4-mile runners in each age category, as well as awards for “Most Turkey Trot Spirit” and “Best Costume”.
