In August We Feature Kids and Pets As summer begins its wind down and the start of school commences, it signals the end of carefree days, slower morning routines and time spent adventuring. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of the summer season never get old. Although for our children the return to school is often a welcome friend, by the time August rolls around the end of summer can still be for us a touch bittersweet. This issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community—kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. We asked Laura Lambertson to investigate the “Shark Tank” competition held annually at Lake Zurich High School. She learned that the community is filled with plenty of clever, hard-working young entrepreneurs whose efforts earned the investment of praise, advice, and seed funding from the local benevolent benefactors (aka, "Sharks") in the District 95 Education Committee. As the “Sharkies” prepare for their college careers we also present Kimberly Blaker’s article on how parents can prepare for their new lives with kids out of the house, headed off to campuses across the country. This issue also has a story from an unlikely pair of pets who despite their obvious differences have become the best of furry friends. No doubt: pets are family members, so we also recommend a couple of natural-ingredient DIY pet shampoos to freshen up your pup (or kitty, if you’re brave). Looking for a quick getaway? ANNUAL ENTREPRENEUR CONTEST AT LAKE ZURICH HIGH SCHOOL IS MODELED AFTER POPULAR TV SHOW “SHARK TANK”, INCLUDING TOP-PERFORMER FUNDING.
The rumor is confirmed: there are sharks (of the “benevolent benefactor” breed) in Lake Zurich! Thanks to the collaboration between Lake Zurich Community School District 95 and INCubatoredu, teams of student entrepreneurs had the opportunity to pitch their innovative business ideas to local investors “shark tank” style. It began as a year-long entrepreneurship course with community business leaders serving as mentors and coaches. Students worked together in teams to design and develop a product or service which would hopefully win them seed money to help turn their dreams into reality. “The students in the program really absorbed what we discussed in class and had great questions on how the subject matter I taught would affect their products or service,” said Vasili Russis, a Partner at Buckley Fine Law who serves as an INCubator Mentor.

The Board of Advisors panel asks the student teams questions to determine if startup funding will be provided
After months of hard work, the students took center stage with the long-awaited and exhilarating INCubator Final Pitch Night in the Lake Zurich High School Performing Arts Center. The student teams pitched their ideas to the sharks (judges) and the sharks took the bait, awarding the top three teams seed money ranging from $3000 to $7000. First place was awarded to Venato, a company whose mission is to provide alternatives to the currently bulky and costly virtual reality full-body tracking systems. Second place was awarded to Knock Knock, a company whose vision is to provide products which transform any home into a smart home. Third place was awarded to On My Time, a web-based service company which matches students with jobs that fit their busy lifestyles. Although funding was only provided to three groups, the remaining finalists proved that there are still many fish in the sea with their own promising business ideas. Multi-taskers would love Brushease, a hands-free toothbrush. On-the-go people will appreciate Releaved, a mobile app which helps locate clean, safe, and convenient public restrooms. Athletes can benefit from Rumble Athletic Network, a social network to help athletes improve their skills and enjoy their sport to the fullest. INCubator Board of Advisors member and CFO of A.M. Woodland Outdoor Design Dan Migacz stated that the INCubator program was a great experience: “The teachers and support staff did an outstanding job, and the students exceeded my expectations.” Now that the stage lights have faded from the Final Pitch Night contest, the winning teams have been busy taking the next steps needed to launch their businesses. Under the guidance of mentors, the students are opening business bank accounts, filing paperwork with the State to create LLCs, and are learning the requirements necessary to access their seed money, granted by the District 95 Educational Foundation. From this point these businesses can continue to grow and develop. Emma
Emma (a Heeler mix dog): The first year of my life was rough. I was born in northern Kentucky and found by an animal shelter after wandering on my own. After just a few days I was packed up with other dogs for a long ride in a truck to an adoption agency in Lake County (Save-A-Pet in Grayslake). Shortly after my arrival—and just after my first birthday—I gave birth to a litter of puppies. After my puppies were weaned, I was spayed and put up for adoption. Even though I was exhausted and still had my stitches from surgery an empty nester couple brought me to my forever home. Ellie (a mostly Maine Coon cat): My story is like Emma’s, except I came from a farm in Iowa. I was living in the family’s kitchen with my siblings, and we had so much fun. After eight weeks with our mother, she was let back outside and suddenly lots of students from the University of Iowa started visiting us. We got to play with them and caused a lot of trouble. One day a new family appeared and the next thing I knew I was in a car for the first time on the way to my forever home. Emma: By the time I moved in Ellie had already been part of our family for four years. I don’t think she liked me very much. Ellie: You were the new kid and needed to learn the ropes, puppo. Emma: My first few days all I wanted to do was run. My life up to that point had been so confusing. The new house has a big back yard in a nice neighborhood, and I could tell there were dogs everywhere. So, I ran away to find them. Ellie: Seriously, you caused so much trouble when you got here. Even I was worried. Emma: Yeah, I kept running away. Eventually, my parents got a trainer to help me out. I was given a new collar which I really hated. It made a funny sound whenever I strayed too close to the edge of the yard. The trainer was nice, though. She smelled like she spent time with a bunch of dogs. Let me tell you, she had the most delicious treats, too. Just by staying in the yard I got so much love (and treats). Let’s just say I learned my lesson.

Ellie: I’m a lot different than Emma. Emma: I’ll say… Ellie: I’m a climber. I like to stay inside and climb up to get the best look around. I jump up on the couch, tables, chairs, but my favorite place is the kitchen counter. I like to sit on one side of the sink until one of our people turn on the faucet so I can drink water. Emma: I’m not allowed to do anything like that. Ellie: Tell the truth now… Emma: Well, I guess I do get to climb up on the bed. Ellie: Me, too. It’s just so comfortable when all of us are together. Emma: Yep, I hear you about that. I also like it when our parents are in the family room. Mom likes to grab a blanket to lay down on the carpet with me to watch TV. Ellie: And I jump up on the couch and snuggle with dad. It’s very peaceful. I don’t really watch much TV because after a while I get very sleepy. Emma: I love TV, especially when there are animals. Whenever I hear animal noises I really perk up and pay attention. Ellie: One of the things I love about Emma is she always knows what’s going on both inside and outside our house. It makes me feel safe knowing that she is always on the watch. Emma also amazingly knows whenever one of our people comes home. She always goes straight to the door to wait for one of them to walk inside. Emma: Ellie comes, too. She just tries to play it cool. Ellie: That’s just me being me! Emma: I love how Ellie likes to play with me. Sometimes I’ll walk by her and all of a sudden—WHAP— she reaches out to give me a playful slap. Then we’ll start chasing each other a little bit, but not so much that we get in trouble. Ellie: You really are my best friend. Emma: You’re my best friend, too. It’s crazy to think about how we are so very different, come from different places and still here we are—best friends. Ellie: You know, the things that make us different aren’t as important as the things where we are alike. I really love that dog. Emma: Living here has taught me that despite our obvious differences, on the most important things we have a lot in common. I really love that cat.

Kids headed off to college? How to survive and embrace it. MANY PARENTS LOOK FORWARD TO EXPERIENCING FREEDOM THEY HAVEN’T ENJOYED IN NEARLY TWO DECADES. ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKER PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL BEIGHTOL, STEPHEN NEILSON + DAN PATTEN
If you are preparing this month to see a child off to college, you may flashback to all your child’s milestones, special moments, and fun times you’ve shared together. It feels like only yesterday, your toddler said his or her first word. Soon after, you dropped your child off for the first day of kindergarten, prepared your preteen for puberty, and took your teen shopping for the high school prom. But now, seemingly in an instant, your child is headed out into the world, more or less on their own. This is a turning point at which you no longer have much oversight or say in your child’s life. It can be both scary and exhilarating for parents and kids alike. Of course, you’ll worry about your teen’s safety and well-being. But you’ll also revel in your young adult’s enthusiasm, excitement, and dreams for the future. Parents’ feelings about their own life without their child’s daily presence and primary parenting responsibilities are often met with a mix of emotions as well. Many parents look forward to this point in their lives and the freedom they haven’t enjoyed in nearly two decades. Some
parents may even feel conflicted or guilty for looking forward to ‘me’ time. At the same time, many parents (even those same parents) feel a sense of loss. After all, they’ve devoted 18 years to caregiving and raising their child. Many parents lose their sense of self while raising a family. In fact, being a parent can become one’s identity. As a result, parents may feel an even more significant loss when their kid heads away to college. So how do you survive this transition? Start by embracing it.
A HEART-TO-HEART. Write a letter to your child when you see them off to college. A letter is best because your kid can save it and reread it to absorb and ponder what you have to say. You’ve already taught your child the importance of manners and doing their schoolwork. So, skip that stuff. Instead, offer wisdom about life and your appreciation for your child’s admirable characteristics. Also, avoid dumping on your teen. It’s okay to say you’re going to miss your kid, but don’t overdo it and leave your child feeling guilty or responsible for your pain or loss. CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . CONNECTION AND SPACE. Decide how to maintain communication with your college student. Phone calls, texting, email, video chat, and visiting them on campus offer ample opportunities to preserve your relationship. But don’t overdo it. Your young adult needs time and space to experience their newfound independence and blossom.
EXPLORE. You now have a lot more free time. Don’t let that downtime become an avenue to needlessly worry or mope. Instead, be proactive and set out on a mission of self-discovery. Have you thought about going back to school, work, or changing your career? Now’s a good time to explore your options. How about a new hobby, volunteer work, or focusing on your fitness and health? You can also broaden your horizons. Try out different music genres, visit art and history museums, go to plays and sporting events, or explore cultural restaurants or cooking.
TRAVEL. Plan something exciting. Consider a trip to someplace you’ve always dreamed of going. Or perhaps plan a long road trip or multiple weekend road trips throughout the year. Whatever you choose will help busy your time with the planning, give you something to look forward to, and remind you of the upside of an empty nest or one less child to raise.
IT GETS EASIER. Remember, whatever grief, loneliness, worries, or self-doubts you experience, they’re a natural part of this transition. With each week and month that passes, it’ll get easier. One day, you’ll wake up and discover you’ve fully embraced your new life—and feel real joy for your child’s newfound independence.
