Soaking Up the Summer Sun It's finally here—summer. The soaking rains of spring left us with a profusion of green lawns and gardens and now with the heat of a warm summer sun, it's time to let nature do its thing. Summer means a change in fashion, so we have a variety of looks available here for both guys and gals, compliments of Threads Boutique (Wauconda), DIBI Menswear (Lake Barrington) and EVEREVE in the Deer Park Town Center. Need a refresher on one of the favorite summer getaway spots? Door County, the thumb of Wisconsin, has emerged from the worst of the pandemic with a variety of new places, venues and experiences. If you'll be traveling this summer with young children, regular contributor Kimberly Blaker has advice on how a family can de-stress the miles getting to their summer vacation. No matter where you are this month the sounds of birdsong are a sure sign of the season. Contributing Writer Christina Sikorski presents a terrific story about the remarkable Phoebe Snetsinger, who became one of the greatest birdwatchers ever on a global scale. A collaboration of local folks are working with the Village of Hawthorn Woods to create a bird garden to help keep Phoebe's legacy alive. DOOR COUNTY ESCAPE For some of us, Door County is a near-mythical place north of the tension line that evokes memories of rocky beaches and refreshingly cold waters; the fiery drama of a fish boil and cherry pies bought at road-side stands; families racing go-karts and miniature golf competition; goats on a grassy roof at Al Johnson’s and ice cream treats from Wilson’s; and taking stairs two-steps-at-a-time to the top of Cana Island Lighthouse or Eagle Tower for sweeping views of green and blue waters of Lake Michigan or the Bay of Green Bay, respectively. All that and much more awaits visitors to the thumb-like peninsula that juts into the lake in the northeastern corner of Wisconsin, a smooth-rolling drive less than four hours from Lake County. “We have some great new stuff, definitely fun things for families looking to make some great new memories,” says Jon Jarosh, Chief Communications Officer for Destination Door County. “We saw a down year in 2020 due to the pandemic, but last year things started to come around and this year is certainly shaping up to be a good season for us which is fantastic.” As principal cheerleader for the county, Jarosh shares lots about what’s new for visitors this summer. In Peninsula State Park between Fish Creek and Ephraim on the bay side, Eagle
Tower is now wheelchair (and baby stroller) accessible due to the 850-foot long Canopy Ramp. The view from atop the tower (on a 200foot bluff) is of the bay, islands and across the water to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In Sturgeon Bay, a city that serves as the gateway to Door County, the Maritime Museum offers local historical perspectives, as well as a new replica lighthouse that offers visitors a climb up an interior staircase (or quick elevator ride) for views of a busy working waterfront. For a real lighthouse experience, there’s the Cana Island Lighthouse in Bailey’s Harbor. A climb up 97 steps to a steel deck circling the top of the 153-year-old structure offers views of Lake Michigan and the peninsula. On the lighthouse grounds, newly accessible by riding in a tractor-drawn hay wagon over a now-submerged causeway (due to high water levels), visitors can learn what it was like for lighthouse keepers and their families living on the small island. In the realm of lodging updates, Jarosh reports that the venerable Alpine Resort, on the Egg Harbor shoreline, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this season. The family of the original resort owner sold to an out-ofstate investor that spent last year refreshing Alpine’s collection of cozy cottages with fully updated baths, climate control, and Wi-Fi.

The original lodge is still undergoing renovation, but a new restaurant, Burton’s on the Bay, was due to open in May featuring wood-fired pizza, sandwiches, fresh seafood, steak and pork entrees, nightly specials, and Fish Fry on Fridays. With the abundance of world-famous cherry orchards (apple, too!), Door County has offered sweet fruit wines for decades. Now a collection of wineries growing area-appropriate grapes has emerged providing more sophisticated palates an interesting array of wines. Jarosh says the newest set to open this summer is Anchored Roots Vineyard & Winery in Egg Harbor. Founded by a couple with a combined 12 years in the Washington State wine industry, the 38-acre property includes a production facility, tasting room, and vineyard on-site. Currently the vineyard is growing a variety of grapes, including Marquette (think Pinot Noir), Frontenac Gris, Adalmiina, and more. SEVEN HACKS FOR FUN, STRESS-FREE TRAVELING
Is this the month for the vacation your family has been anxiously anticipating? If so, as a parent how prepared are you for a road trip with youngsters, and being asked a hundred times or more, “Are we there yet?” With a little pre-planning, you can drastically reduce the hassles and turn your time on the road into a fun, family experience for all.
RESTROOM BREAKS
DRIVE THROUGH THE NIGHT Kids typically sleep through the night on the road. So, it’ll seem like to them that you’ve reached your destination in the blink-of-an-eye, which will reduce everybody’s stress. Parents can switch off driving while one another rests.
SNACKS AND DRINKS
Immediately before heading out, have everyone go to the bathroom, whether they need to or not. Just before and while on the road, limit beverages, particularly caffeinated ones, to reduce the frequency of restroom stops. When you do have to stop for something, have everyone use the restroom again, and don’t accept anyone’s claim, “I don’t need to go.”
Bring along a cooler and a variety of drinks and snacks to reduce pit stops. Breaking up the time with small meals and snacks will also help keep kids pacified. When packing snacks, include some nutritious ones like carrot sticks and apples. Also, keep in mind the messiness of particular types of foods. To reduce messes, avoid foods that melt, smear, and squish, such as chocolate, cupcakes, and yogurt.
REDUCE STOPS
PLAN FUN OR SCENIC STOPS
Strategize where you choose to stop so you can cover all the bases at once. Fuel up, grab food and beverages, use the restroom, and go for a walk or play a game of tag so everyone can stretch and exercise.
Do some advance research to find a fun stop along the way and build it into your vacation. Look for a state or national park, national monument, beach, kiddie fun-land, river walk, or water park.

CAR ENTERTAINMENT Before your trip, visit the library to pick out books, especially audiobooks. Create music playlists, and search for suitable podcasts. But don’t let the kids have the items until you’re on the road. That way, the kids will have fresh entertainment. Also, take along some car games, notepads and pencils, and print a list of games that don’t require pieces to play. Some ideas to get you started include: • The license plate game. Have everyone write down the states of the license plates as they spot them. The person with the most states wins. • Try “Would you rather?” Take turns asking everyone what their choice would be between two gross or unpleasant situations. For example, would you rather be trapped in a closet that’s crawling with hundreds of centipedes or eat a worm?
Driving at night can speed travel while kids sleep.
SCREEN TIME While limiting kids’ daily screen time is a best practice, consider making an exception for your road trip. Depending on the length of your drive, it can be a challenge to keep kids amused for the duration despite all the other entertainment you bring along. Haw thorn Woods Builds Garden Honoring World-Record-Setting Local Birder

A charming 2016 Google Doodle honored a world-record-setting ornithologist on what would have been her 85th birthday, celebrating her as the first person to document 8,000+ birds in the wild. This world-famous birder was a local high school valedictorian (then called Ela Vernon High School) who would shatter records that no woman, and few men, had even approached.

You should know of Phoebe Snetsinger, whose life’s passion was birding. To reach her milestone to be first to locate and identify 8,000 birds, Snetsinger traveled to every continent, sometimes risking her own life. (For perspective, there are just 900 species of birds in North America.) Living in Lake County and attending school in Lake Zurich, Phoebe was the daughter of librarian Naomi Burnett and advertising giant Leo Burnett, whose namesake company created branding icons like the Jolly Green Giant, the Pillsbury Doughboy, and Tony the Tiger. Phoebe married Dave Snetsinger and went on to have four children. Snetsinger’s interest in birds began in her mid-30s when a neighbor introduced her to birding. In her memoir, Birding on Borrowed Time, she writes that the beauty of a Blackburn Warbler “nearly knocked me over with astonishment and quite simply hooked me forever… perhaps all the more powerful because of its belated entry into my life.” Snetsinger was an enthusiastic birder who took meticulous notes, color-coded and geographically referenced on 3x5 index cards. Soon her hobby started taking more and more of her time. Shortly before her 50th birthday, Snetsinger received news that would change her life: she was diagnosed with terminal melanoma and given one year to live. At the time, there was no effective and proven treatment, so Snetsinger moved forward with a planned trip to Alaska to find and observe new birds for her “life list.” When she returned home, her cancer was in remission. Snetsinger would go on to live another 18 years and travel the world in her urgent quest to document as many birds as possible. It was a race to the top. In her book, she wrote about the internal fire kindled by her diagnosis: “Occasionally I thought about all these incredible experiences I’d have missed if my melanoma had behaved according to prediction— which of course motivated me all the more to keep moving. I think I began about this time to feel that I was maybe out-running the disease. Somehow I developed a feeling of virtual invincibility once I was on a plane heading toward new places and new birds; I was leaving the threat behind.” From her diagnosis in 1981 until her death in 1999, she faced her mortality head-on and smashed record after record; her tireless preparation and research proved critical to the birding world in a time well before

computerized databases or even updated field guides and manuals existed. As she wrote of her experience, “It was a season of true magic, perhaps of all the more powerful because of its belated entry into my life.” During her travels, Snetsinger endured recurrences of her cancer, broken bones, a shipwreck, a kidnapping, and a brutal physical attack. She ultimately died in an auto accident in Madagascar while pursuing another amazing bird. In the epilogue to her memoir, her son Thomas wrote, “She went out, as she had always hoped, at the very top of her game, in the middle of doing what she most loved to do.” Where others would have stopped or course-corrected, Snetsinger never gave up. Remarkably, Snetsinger accomplished this in a time when competitive drive was not seen favorably in women; all the other birders marching toward those important milestones were men. She wrote, “The birding game was indeed beginning to become intensely competitive for me. ... Both Satchel Paige, the baseball player, and my extraordinarily successful father warned: ‘Never look back— someone might be gaining on you!’” Snetsinger is back in the news locally because a memorial garden is being built in Hawthorn Woods Community Park to honor her legacy. The idea started when Shari Gullo was researching township history for the Ela Peace Project. The more Gullo learned about Snetsinger, the more fascinated she became. “I’m just in awe of her,” Gullo said. “It is so appropriate to have a garden in Phoebe’s memory to attract birds. No other woman had reached the 8,000bird milestone, and she did this before the Internet and with all these things happening to her. She still persevered and survived.” Gullo partnered with Pam Newton, Chief Operating Officer for the Village of Hawthorn Woods, and landscape architect Pamela Self to carve out a bucolic area and design a garden filled with native plants to attract birds. After learning the history from Gullo, Self was eager to help. “When you hear Phoebe’s whole history and know the story, it makes sense to bring it to people’s attention.” Barrington High School student Kyle Wanca made the garden his Eagle Scout project and has been working closely with Self, the Village of Hawthorn Woods, and other community leaders to prepare the site. “I hope the community will have the opportunity to go see the garden and enjoy it,” he said.

Self explained that Hawthorn Woods has already made great strides in their conservation efforts; this project moves that vision forward. “The spot we picked is a natural setting. People can see it from the path. With mature trees already established, especially the Hawthorn trees, the pollinator plants we are choosing will provide a food source for the birds,” she said. The hope is to nurture and watch the garden bloom, with pollinators and birds returning year after year. Ready to start your own life list of birds? One example: the call of a blue jay sounds like its name—”jay-jay-jay!” You may not get to 8,000 birds, but you can enjoy the beautiful Hawthorn Woods setting while imagining the garden’s namesake in her floppy hat and sturdy shoes, binoculars in hand, ready for learning and adventure. Thomas Snetsinger closed his mother’s memoir with her motto: “Carpe diem!”

THE GOODS + Ice
+ 4 ounces cucumber-basil infused gin + 1 cup fresh pink grapefruit juice + 1 cup ginger beer + 3 tablespoons basil cut into ribbons + Fresh grapefruit wedges + Fresh cucumber slices
HOW TO
01 Add a half cup of cucumber slices and 2 tablespoons of basil ribbons to 1 cup of gin.
02 Refrigerate overnight. 03 Strain the gin and reserve 4 ounces. 04 Divide ice between two tall glasses. 05 Add gin and divide the grapefruit juice between glasses. 06 Top with ginger beer and garnish with grapefruit wedges, cucumber slices and thinly sliced basil ribbons. 07 Enjoy. Cheers!
