LIFESTYLE LETTER

This One’s for the Guys

June 2022 PUBLISHER

Michael Beightol | michael.beightol@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Stephen Neilson | stephen.neilson@citylifestyle.com

Welcome to the time of the year when we lean more than usual into some topics of interest to men. Take fatherhood: no child comes with an owner’s manual. The role that a dad plays in the development of a child is massive, yet many of us essentially adopt a trial-by-error approach to shaping a child. In the long run, most dads do a pretty good job. June 19 is Father’s Day, so we asked a few local dads to share their thoughts on parenting. Their observations were from the heart—and as you might expect—occasionally humorous. If you are just starting your role as a father, take heed (and don’t forget to bring along a diaper bag). Some guys like road trips. We’ve got a story about one to Detroit that includes fast and powerful cars—not for getting you to where you’re going, but to see on display when you get there. Some fellas like golf. There’s a new INDOOR golfing experience in Kildeer—X Golf—offering a simulated round on a collection of the world’s top courses. Every man should look sharp. Now a visit to Mr. Tux in Lake Zurich will get you fitted for bespoke suits, dress shirts or casual wear that is a class above off-the-rack ordinary. This issue also examines how two gentlemen found that faith, resiliency, and a community helped them move on after tremendous difficulty. We also present a story about how students at Lake County’s own medical college are helping in a big way to combat the risks from recreational drugs. An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people around him to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. And it’s not just fathers: it’s also coaches, uncles, brothers, coworkers and more who are role models, leading by example. Think for a moment about a man in your life who has had a big impact on you at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing you to be a better version of yourself, someone who sees the best in you, someone you look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone you only know from afar who inspires you. To the men who are making a difference in someone’s life—big or small— we applaud you.

Deer Park Town Center Welcomes New Tenant

High School Students Earn Scholarship Awards

“Deer Park Town Center is an ideal location” for us, said Randelle Lenoir, Vice President Branch Leader at Fidelity Investments. “We have designed our new space as a welcoming environment where clients can feel comfortable when seeking advice about their finances.” Fidelity Investments helps families with financial planning, advice, and educational resources for new and experienced investors. Fidelity occupies the space that was a Panera Bread (closed during the pandemic).

Nine graduating high schoolers are recipients of scholarship awards from the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce. Alejandra Vega, Jack Hayden, Tyler Groom, Maiya Foster, Kaelyn Deacon and Lily Dale (pictured) were honored recently at Biltmore Country Club. “The BACC Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarship awards outstanding local youth in our communities,” said Suzanne Corr, chamber president and CEO. (Not pictured are other honorees, including Kaleb Koch, Annika Llerena and Josh Wickstrom.)

I have four kids and love them all dearly. Katie is the first to transition from being my baby, to my student, a friend, a peer, and now a mentor. I love how she has mirrored the best of me and made it better. The most wonderful part about being a dad is watching your kids evolve into something amazing.

Fatherhood to me is about being a leader, mentor, coach, and role model. I embrace my responsibility as a father for being a guiding light for my children. I am here to nurture them; to know them; to shape and guide them; to teach them the fundamentals of being a good person: respect, manners, empathy, and work ethic. And most importantly for loving them for who they are unconditionally.

When they were young: The joy of no more diapers; the shock of having my back to my 9-month old, then finding him gone (his first crawl); and having my mindset jolted from the ‘weight’ of a child needing me 100% to the ‘dismay’ of them no longer being so. Now that they are adults, I am not afraid to learn from them; being a model by living as a Grace note to others; and praying for the world to be fair & inclusive, and for our children playing their part.

Being a father has been one of the greatest things to happen to me. Over the years, watching my children grow has taught me they are full of curiosity, love and are teachers themselves. Fatherhood completes who I am as a person.

I really had no idea what I was doing when I first became a father. A defining moment was when I took my infant son, Andrew, to a coffee shop to meet some guy friends on the upper west side of New York without the baby blue diaper bag (I felt it was a little too feminine). You can imagine what happened, so I took things more seriously after that. My own dad was brilliant, a pioneer in the computer science field, but I think I picked up a little more from my wife Kerry’s father, observing his relationship with his children. I’m just glad both my kids survived me!

MAKING A LIFE TOGETHER

18

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

GENTLEMEN OF DISTINCTION With Stutz the golden lab we make our way down to the lower level of the neatly kept home that sits perched on a slight rise above a street in North Barrington. It’s a bright space with bedroom, den, bathroom and a combo laundry/workout room. Steve Alton, 61, moved in four years ago a few months before his wife, Julie, died after battling breast cancer. Several years prior, Steve had a major health crisis of his own; a fist-sized tumor was discovered on his brain. Surgery removed the tumor but left him blind and struggling to speak. Also, the once college scholarship gymnast who loved the aggression, strength and agility required to master the high bar, found that his body was curled up in a position like a sleeping child. After years of therapy, rehabilitation, and a year of residency training for a sightless life, Steve today is full of life with a great sense of humor. They say it takes a community to raise a child; so, too, does it take a community to help a man recover from serious surgery and adapt to a life without sight. Whether it’s Steve’s faith family at the Presbyterian Church of Barrington, doctors, therapists, neighbors, family or friends, all have helped him on his journey. One man in particular stands out. A few years before Julie died, while he still grieved the loss of his own wife of 45 years (Marcia), Don Bouseman, now a 94-years-young retired insurance executive, sought counsel from a

local clergy member. The minister suggested that Don could channel his grief by helping a church member who conveniently also lived in North Barrington. A plan was hatched for Don to meet Steve. “As soon as I got back home from the meeting, my phone rings,” Don recalls. “It was Julie who said that Steve had an appointment at Good Shepherd Hospital. So, the next day this stranger—me— shows up at his door.” So began a 16-year relationship that’s still going strong. When it was clear that Julie’s cancer was terminal, she was determined to find a place for Steve to live without her. The search narrowed to one place, but it was in Gurnee, far away from his church, family and friends. In his heart, Steve knew where he wanted to be. “I just felt because of how our relationship had grown that it would be good for both of us if I moved in with Don,” Steve says. “But it was never anything I could ask him to do… I just prayed on it for a solid month.” Don continues: “One day I was thinking about what Julie and Steve were going through and it just hit me—‘Steve should live here’.” Prayers answered. “I’ll say this—we have a 50/50 relationship,” Steve says. “Don has given me a new life and in return he’s gotten companionship and involvement with my family and four kids.” The life that these gentlemen of distinction share is full. Whether it’s Don’s exercise classes at the Barrington Park District, Steve’s bible group or judo classes (he has a

They are a pair of foodies and enjoy having coffee at Stompin’ Grounds, Pepper Park and Cook Street Coffee, as well as dining out at Ambrosia, Clarke’s Bakery & Deli, Tacos El Norte, Brunch Café, First Watch, Taste of Paris, and many other local restaurants. “We have this neat relationship,” Steve says. “We’re great friends. We’ve only argued like two times in four years. We get along really, really well.” “I tell people that there’s nobody I’d rather have living here than Steve and Stutz,” Don adds. It’s inspiring to see how they have moved on from the losses of their spouses and health challenges. It’s all about faith, resiliency and how a community rises up to help with life’s toughest challenges.

BUILDING A BESPOKE SUIT ARTICLE BY LAURA LAMBERTSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN NEILSON & PROVIDED

Now’s the Time To Feel Like a Celebrity with Hand-Crafted Suits, Dress Shirts & Casual Wear.

High fashion has made its way to the quaint town of Lake Zurich. For decades, Mr. Tux’s Formal Wear has been known for offering outstanding styling and impeccable service to clients renting a suit or tuxedo for a special occasion. Now, Mr. Tux’s Formal Wear is offering a highly sought-after service which will make anyone feel like a celebrity. In 2018, proprietor Chad Dershaw and his wife Susanne decided to pull on their fancy shoes and make Mr. Tux’s Formal Wear and the adjoining Volle’s Bridal shop their own personalized runway. “We wanted to get away from our corporate desk jobs and work in a business that focused on a fun and happy time in people’s lives.” Since then, the pair has revamped Volle’s inventory to not only include high-end designer gowns, but to also include custom gowns created by luxury bridal designer Victoria Sdoukos. However, if a client wanted to order a custom suit, their only options were to either order the suit online or travel to a specialized tailor in Chicago. Understanding that these options were not ideal for their fashion-forward clientele, Chad and Susanne decided to incorporate custom and bespoke shirt and suit offerings for men, women, and children at their Mr. Tux’s Formal Wear location. Custom shirts and suits are created from an existing pattern which is then adjusted to fit a client’s measurements. When clients visit Mr. Tux’s Formal Wear for a custom shirt or suit, they are able to try on up to 99 different sizes of shirts and up to 30 different sizes of

24

FASH ION F OR WA R D | SHOPPI NG

suits based on their measurements. Bespoke shirts and suits are a step-up from custom; they are created from scratch. The garments are cut and sewn by hand and are designed to fit only the client and not anyone else who wants to “borrow a suit.” Once Chad completes a client’s measurements, the real fun begins: clients can select from a vast array of incredible fabrics, collar styles, and colorful buttons, all which will help make their dream shirt or suit become a reality. Fabrics are sourced from around the world, and include European luxury brands like Holland & Sherry and Loro Piana. On a less-formal note: considering some custom shorts for golf, or bespoke jeans for that upcoming vacation? Don’t worry—Mr. Tux’s Formal Wear can soon have you (literally) covered. In the coming months Mr. Tux’s Formal Wear is expanding their custom and bespoke lines to include casual wear, dress pants, tuxes, sports coats, dress shoes, and golf shorts (complete with special pockets for golf tees). Just when the post-pandemic sartorial sense seems awash with pullovers and sweatpants, Mr. Tux’s Formal Wear is a beacon of light guiding their clients to fashion that’s a perfect fit. If you are ready to feel like a celebrity in your own custom or bespoke garments, contact Chad at Mr. Tux’s Formal Wear: 53 South Old Rand Road in Lake Zurich, phone (847) 438-7602, MrTuxFW.com.

CAR SHOW CELEBRATES DESIGN AND SPEED

Summer is the perfect time to hit the road. This month point your car eastward to Detroit for what USA Today calls one of America’s top five car shows, and Car & Driver considers “one of the best outdoor car events worldwide.” The 35th annual EyesOn Design is on Father’s Day (June 19) at Ford House, overlooking Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Shores, MI. Originally, the idea was to have a car show in a small office parking lot as a fundraiser for an eye institute in suburban Detroit. Then the design vice-presidents at Chrysler, Ford and General Motors got involved. Spread across a large lawn in front of a 60-room National Historic Landmark mansion, the event, sponsored by the nonprofit Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology (part of the Henry Ford Health System), this year’s event showcases more than 150 of the best-looking vehicles of their respective eras.

The theme for this year’s show is “Designed for Speed,” celebrating the beauty and design of race cars through the decades. These include early racers of the 1920s, Indianapolis 500 roadsters, classic NASCAR sedans, sports cars, and drag and street racers. One category features the evolution of the Ford GT, from its debut in 1963 through the 2017 production edition. The Ford GT is famous for winning the 24-hour Le Mans race in France four years in a row in the 1960s. Several Chevrolet Corvettes that competed at Le Mans will also be shown, along with a one-of-a-kind Corvette, the first to sport a V8 engine in 1955. The theme for the show is captured in this year’s poster, an impressionistic rendering of a sleek blue 1964 Shelby Daytona Coupe. The car was designed by the legendary Peter Brock, this year’s Lifetime Design Achievement honoree. The show will display a group of Brock-designed cars, such as a replica of the poster car, a 1959 Corvette Stingray, and a spectacular Triumph TR250KR racer, among others. The car show is the final event of the weekend’s activities, which include a Friday driving tour for enthusiasts on a winding route in southeastern Michigan and the Vision Honored event honoring Brock that evening at the M1 Concourse, a private test track and garage complex in Pontiac. Saturday, June 18 brings a design symposium at the GM Design Dome in Warren and an evening “meet-andgreet” with Brock and Corvette designers at the GM Heritage Center. Sunday also features an elegant Private Eyes brunch for designers, car owners and enthusiasts. The show honors its unique mission in another aspect—having a category of cars rated by visually-impaired judges wearing white gloves who select a winner by touch. The car show is 10 a.m.—4 p.m. on Father’s Day. Show tickets are $35. Admission is free to active-duty military and kids under 12 with an adult. All other events are limited capacity and by reservation only. About the Author: Rob Musial is a freelance journalist who says to learn more please visit EyesOnDesign.com.

Finding Answers LOCAL NOT-FOR-PROFIT FOUNDATION RECRUITS LAKE COUNTY MED SCHOOL STUDENTS TO REDUCE THE HARM CAUSED BY RECREATIONAL DRUG USE

ARTICLE BY KAITY MUELLER

Here in Lake County there is a not-for-profit organization, the GPF Foundation, that is committed to support education, treatment and awareness of the risks associated with recreational drugs through partnerships with the academic and medical community. To achieve its goals the Foundation recruits a new group of students every year to participate in the GPF Foundation's Fellowship Initiative. Since 2019 the Fellowship Initiative has created educational programs for young adults (high school and college age) on the dangers of recreational drug use, especially MDMA (ecstasy). Its student members ("fellows") are drawn from the student body of Lake County’s own medical college, the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science (RFUMS). Hamad Hussain and Alex Woods were two of the earliest to join the GPF Foundation through the Fellowship Initiative. Hussain, who grew up in the

suburbs, was drawn to participate because he wanted to help educate his community. Woods, a native Michigander, applied for a fellowship due in part to having witnessed friends struggle with MDMA use. Together with another founding fellow and M.D. candidate, Lexie Kessler, the trio produced a peerled multimedia presentation that the foundation’s interns and partners give to universities and other organizations illustrating the risks associated with ecstasy and other recreational drugs, as well as what treatments are provided when users experience a negative reaction. Wood says it’s important to know that the fellows worked in partnership with other researchers and doctors, including Dr. Joseph Palamar of New York University’s Department of Population Health, to ensure that the education program was backed by research from experts in the field.

Woods notes that the uniqueness of the GPF Foundation’s education approach is its focus on harm reduction. He says that “the impact of the foundation's message is to educate young adults in a non-judgmental way that helps protect people, prevent harm, and where there is harm, prevent further harm.” The harm reduction curriculum is shared across Lake County and the Chicago region through presentations by GPF Foundation interns and partnerships that include Lake Forest College, the Highwood Public Library, Highland Park High School, and more. This collaboration helps grow the Foundation’s reach and recognition in the broader community. Hussain adds that another strength of the Fellows is their ability to connect with young adults on a personal level because they are in the same age group as the target audience.

Although Hussain and Woods have since moved on from their fellowships as their academic careers progressed, they both agree that the experience has helped shape the way they will interact with patients in the future. Kessler, while continuing her RFUMS medical studies, has joined the Foundation’s Board of Directors. The first group of fellows have been succeeded by another two cohorts that include Jeremy Foreman, a Lake County native and current RFUMS student. He says he was inspired to seek a fellowship after witnessing a friend’s MDMA overdose. “I wanted to see if I could combine my studies in chronic pain and opioid research, as well as my experience witnessing an overdose, to really get involved with advocating harm reduction.” In Foreman’s work with the GPF Foundation, he reviews research and articles about harm reduction

and treatments to improve or update educational content. Foreman also notes that the curriculum has evolved with feedback from other organizations. For instance, after presenting to both high school and college age students, the fellows have since tailored the curriculum to better fit the needs of each of the two different groups. Foreman says that the fellows help enable the GPF Foundation to adapt their content as quickly as necessary. The work by doctoral students such as Alex Woods, Hamad Hussain, Lexie Kessler and Jeremy Foreman benefits not only the Foundation, but its partners and the surrounding community.
