Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life—especially my mother, wife, two daughters, daughter-in-law and mother-in-law—I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made on me. Each of them share not just a wonderful sense of self-confidence, but also see and call out the beauty and talent in others, and I am much the richer for it. In this month’s issue we have a few items of particular interest for the women we serve in Lake County. First off, we are happy to share a story about Bonnie Conte, a local business owner with exciting news to share about the start of a new business (VIBE) AND the move of her flagship salon/spa (Avalon) to Lake Zurich. Renee Clark, a Realtor with @Properties, shares with us beautiful photos and insights about a home in Long Grove. The local real estate market continues to provide remarkable opportunities for families deciding to settle in the communities we call home. Dr. Alma Lombardo (Diamond Dental Service) has a story—and cautionary tale—about the importance of self-care for women. Chamber Offices Relocate to Downtown Lake Zurich
Fashion Apparel Retailer Expands Deer Park Footprint
A much anticipated move of the offices for the Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce happened in March. The new location (33 E. Main Street) gives the chamber staff more space for offices, meetings and storage, plus the organization now has more visibility and accessibility to members and the community at large. A cohort of members helped with the move, giving the staff a "thumbs up" for their new digs.
National fashion retailer EVEREVE has moved to a new larger space with a fresh new design at Deer Park Town Center. It's a Midwest brand at heart that caters to women with contemporary looks, brands and an in-house label. Founder Megan Tamte is a NW suburban native and has opened 11 stores in the Chicagoland area making Illinois the first state to expand her concept since its inception in Minnesota in 2004. Celebrating Women’s Health Month Learn How to Become a Better You: a Women Who’s Fit, Eats Healthy, Recharges Her Batteries and Manages Stress. ARTICLE BY KRISTEN TODOROFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JULIE SNYDER Feeling healthy and happy is determined by much more than what’s on your plate. Every facet of your life contributes to your physical, emotional, and mental health. Toxic relationships or a stressful job can be just as harmful to your health as pesticides on your produce.
PHYSICAL HEALTH Staying physically active is so important for your body to function properly. Regular exercise (even just walking every day) is key to maintain your strength, flexibility, and endurance for daily activities. Even
better, exercise increases the “feel-good hormone” dopamine. Physical activity is also critical to prevent osteoporosis, a common condition that affects women. We’ve all heard “you are what you eat”—and for good reason! What we consume is literally fuel that all the cells in our body need to function. If you eat and drink quality ingredients, your cells get the nutrients and vitamins that they need to work properly. Drink plenty of water, and know that eating organic whole foods and reducing fried and processed foods is critical to feeling your best. CONTINUED >

EMOTIONAL HEALTH Self-care is a must to maintain emotional well-being. It’s all too common for women to put others first—whether family, friends, or children. Do something just for YOU every day—it can be as simple as taking 15 minutes to read a book, go outside for some fresh air, or treat yourself to a manicure. When I’m feeling discouraged or down, I call or text a friend—and right away my mood lifts. Anything that recharges your batteries will work wonders in how you feel, which in turn improves how you care for others. Do you have a demanding boss? Maybe an over-bearing relative or a friend who always complains? Look at your relationships with friends, family, and colleagues. If negativity is a common theme with some folks you know, it may be a good idea to set some boundaries on the time you spend with them. If this isn’t possible, try ways to remain positive by focusing on something you CAN control; look for things that you admire in that person, however minor they may seem.

MENTAL HEALTH Stress is the root of all disease. It weakens the immune system, interferes with sleep, and increases your chance of heart disease, dementia, diabetes, depression, asthma, and many more health problems. Finding ways to regularly manage stress is essential: exercise, getting involved in activities you enjoy, or just spending time outdoors can help drastically improve your mental health. There are so many things in life that are out of our control; looking inward through meditation or prayer helps ground you and connect to

something beyond ourselves. I love yoga, and often refer to it as my church, gym, and therapy session. Last week a new patient of mine said something that reminded me of the announcement that flight attendants always make before a plane takes off: “In the event of an emergency, put on your own oxygen mask before helping others.” When a plane loses cabin pressure, there is limited time to put on a mask before suffering from oxygen deprivation. If you pass out, you can’t help anyone else, such as a child or older passenger. We put on our own mask first, so we can help others. Even though she was a new patient, I’ve known her for the last five years because she brings her kids to see me like clockwork every six months. She also schedules her husband’s appointments and recently started bringing her mother-inlaw. It’s obvious that she cares about her family’s health by taking the time to ensure they are well cared for. So, when she finally got herself into my dental chair, I was surprised to learn that she had not seen a dentist since her first child was born eight years ago. When I asked her why she always made sure her family saw the dentist regularly, but not herself, she replied, “Who has the time?” And that is why I thought of the safety drill we hear whenever we fly. My new patient and countless women just like her constantly put others ahead of themselves. Whether it’s their children, spouse, aging parents, or their busy careers, there is unspoken societal pressure on women to ignore their own needs and to take care of others. But just like putting on someone else’s oxygen mask first, this is risky behavior. The CDC reports that 47.2% of Americans over 30 have some form of periodontal disease, and that figure rises to a staggering 70.1% by age 65. As a dentist, these figures are very troubling because gum disease has been linked to a myriad of health problems such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, stroke and even heart disease, the number one killer of women in America. In fact, people with gum disease are three times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.
