LIFESTYLE LETTER

What Makes a Home? Seems like a simple question. A home is a place for rest, love and safety from the outside world. It’s where you can kick back, let your guard down, be part of a family and take shelter from the storms that rage beyond. Some homes feel just like that, while others can be filled with conflict and strife. This is our annual Home issue, when we take stock in this incredibly special place where we spend the most of our time and interact with those who mean the most to us. We are thrilled to present the work of Kerry & John Briggs, North Barrington residents and owners of Briggs Design. Sprawling across several pages are beautiful photos by Editor Stephen Neilson of a remodeling project the Briggs team built for a young couple with a small child—a family on the precipice of creating their perfect home. Frequent contributor Kimberly Blaker provides timely tips for convenience products that help us get organized and keep the chaos of a cluttered home at bay. This issue is about more than just the structures we call home; it’s also about the memories that people make in them. Marty Jalove of Master of Happiness LLC shares with us a revealing story of his early home life. Most significantly, he tells how a special person in his childhood made difficult times a little easier. The yearning for home was never more apparent than when I interviewed local Olympian Kevin Bickner, a Lake County native who represented the United States in the just-completed Beijing Winter Olympics. Earlier this year, Kevin was in Slovenia training as a world-class ski jumper, competing in major events across the world. We exchanged a series of text messages to prepare his story for this issue. When I asked what he most looked forward to after the ski jumping season was over, his answer was succinct and sweet: “Coming home.” In an uncertain world, home should be the place we eagerly return to, where we build each other up. After all, aren’t the memories made within the walls of our own home what’s most important?

LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT HOME? WE FOUND IT!

“Working with Renee and her team has been an absolute dream. Renee was able to find our family the perfect home by having a keen awareness of what we were looking for and making sure we could see each home the moment it became available. She was patient and knowledgeable throughout the whole process and we can’t thank her and her team enough!” -A.S.

“Tom worked diligently making this transaction happen dealing with the constant changes the sellers required. He kept me informed with everything that was going on throughout the transaction from the initial showing up to the closing. I will definitely work with them again and would recommend them.” -T.M.

“Oh you were so great! We loved that you took time to explain certain things and processes. Also that you didn’t pressure us into putting offers on house that weren’t good fits and you helped us find our dream home. And you were very friendly while being professional.” - B.M.

business monthly A round-up of exciting news from local businesses. How to Learn About Trends in Closet Design The pandemic has emphasized the desire to treat our homes as sanctuaries. Jamie Trewartha, owner of Closets by Design—Chicago North, advises that taming clutter is one of the best ways to restore order. Families are moving away from utilitarian plastic bins and toward natural-material baskets to store items without taking away from a home’s décor. There’s also demand for hidden storage, including built-in storage units with drawers and cabinets. Learn more at ChicagoNorth.ClosetsByDesign.com.

Ample pantry-room shelves (through doorway at left) are just feet away from the open kitchen design

The home was having a “mid-life crisis.” That’s how best to describe this 120-year-old Victorian that long ago had been converted into a two flat. New owners Jon and Christine Barry are a professional couple with a new baby. Jon is a software engineer who found himself (like many others) working from home during the pandemic. Kerry and John Briggs (Briggs Design Associates) were called upon to assess the house and manage the design and build of a series of upgrades for the owners, as the house had to accommodate a variety of needs. After digging into the home’s history the owners shared a few interesting discoveries about how previous families used the home (including that the previous owner had lambs stabled in the basement on the day of final inspection). The Briggs team listened, and incorporated the home’s unique experiences and challenges into designing the best solutions for their renovation plan. A primary goal was to maintain its Victorian feel, while adding updates and more modern features throughout the house. A formal dining room was transformed into a new kitchen, while the adjoining former kitchen space became a wonderful walk-in pantry. As to be expected, the home had settled a bit over the years; that meant the floors and ceilings in some places needed to be leveled properly. And, with a home of this vintage, there were a

few surprises along the way. After deciding the existing family room fireplace was impractical, renovations revealed that not only was it inoperable, but apparently was originally built as a “faux fireplace” (i.e., “all show and no glow”). On the flip side of surprises, while removing a wall to accommodate a more practical open floor plan, a warm brick wall was revealed that had been covered over by sheet rock (likely decades ago); this serendipitous find is now gloriously restored. The lighting system was converted to LED lighting products, controlled by a multi-zone, multi-scene “smart” system. This allows the owners to easily access an unlimited number of preset scenes throughout the day, each with lights brightened or dimmed to predetermined levels to perfectly match the current function of the space and the time of day. While refinishing the hardwood flooring, care was taken to keep to the original stain. Any new flooring was stained to match. The built-in cabinetry and millwork were painted a beautiful soft gray/green.

In the pantry, a deep farmer’s sink matches the one in the kitchen.

The owners love to entertain, so the new open plan is perfect for gathering lots of people; it’s now a go-to place for family and friends events. “The plans [that Briggs Design created] were more than we could have imagined,” said the owners recently. “Kerry is very helpful in the decision-making process, explaining each detail and creating a step-by-step process without making it an overwhelming experience. She was very receptive to our style and needs while maintaining the character of our turn-of-the-century home (and also giving it a muchneeded modernization). We are now using her for our second level designs. All told, our project will involve the kitchen relocation and renovation, mudroom, living room, dining room, family room, closet space, stairwell, and the relocation of an exterior door.” Briggs Design Associates (North Barrington) specializes in renovating and remodeling spaces carefully designed to meet the requirements and routines of every client. Kerry and John Briggs focus on all things residential, specializing in remodeling and interior architectural design. Learn more at Briggs.design.

Letter From Home to My Younger Self ARTICLE BY MARTY JALOVE

When Uncle Buddy visited, the sun seemed a little brighter. His spirit was contagious and kept me grinning for days.

26

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | L I F E + CULTURE

Lil' Marty

“Look Mom, it’s a bird,” I used to say. “I can make a dog, too, but I can’t make a cat.” My Mother would sigh, adding: “Stop making those silly finger shadows. I want you to sit silently in the corner. You are being punished.” As a kid that corner was an all-too familiar place. It seemed like I was always being told to sit still, be quiet and grow up. The kitchen light would cast my shadow on the wall. My shadow didn’t make any noise, never whined, and wouldn’t complain. He just did as he was told and when the timeout was over, he’d follow me quietly to my room. A lot of my childhood was spent in the shadows of older siblings and parents who kept reminding me about how difficult life was. No matter how much my troubles haunted me, they were nothing compared to grown-up problems. In the dark of night, I would sometimes hear my parents arguing about bills, big brothers grumbling about high school, and older sisters complaining about work. Eventually my younger self put aside childhood games. I spent more time in my room shielded from the world behind closed curtains. At school, I was content to be in the back of the classroom. I stopped trying because I believed it didn’t matter. Life was tough and it was only going to get worse. As I spent time in the principal’s office, nodding at his incoherent ramblings, I saw more shadows, including how those cast by his vertical blinds draped over me like prison bars. I thought I was trapped in a life that promised me nothing but more burden as I grew up.

But occasionally, my father’s older brother, Uncle Buddy, would come by to visit. He was carefree. He would tell me stories about how he traveled the world and met the most amazing people. Most of it was exaggerated, but his tales were always incredible. It felt like the sun was a little brighter when he was around. Uncle Buddy taught me about card houses, magic, origami, telling jokes, and much more. He even encouraged me to keep doing finger shadows. His spirit was contagious, leaving me grinning for days after he left. My mother didn’t like him. She said he was childish. He was a troublemaker and never took life seriously, but I loved him all the same. If I had the opportunity to write to my younger self now, what would I say? “Problems are relative. Losing a ball as a boy can be as traumatic as losing a promotion as an adult. Parents complaining about taxes are like babies screaming for their bottles. Life changes as you get older, and I promise that it gets better. The problems that adults face are different. They are not bigger or tougher; they are just different. The secret you’ll learn as you grow older is that you’ll have the skills to cope better. “Please try to understand this. Enjoy life. Play games, laugh, learn, and share. I know that you will eventually emerge into the light. And when you do, I hope that you keep making finger shadows.” Marty Jalove is an International Personal and Professional Life and Business Coach. KEVIN BICKNER OLYMPIC SKI JUMPER

I was 9 years old when I saw Norge Ski Club in Fox River Grove the first time. I thought it was cool, and a few weeks later I went on my first jump. Norge was great. The program is excellent with experienced coaching at every level. I had lots of fun jumping and making new friends. As I progressed in my jumping the thought about competing in the Olympics became more realistic. Making the National team at age 16 was a big step. Now I had a path to follow and more opportunities to compete. My first Olympics was in 2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea. Walking into the stadium for opening ceremonies was surreal, and it makes you really appreciate what you’ve accomplished. For me that’s when I knew I was an Olympian. Closing ceremonies are a bit different and more of a celebration. Whether or not athletes have accomplished their individual

goals, everyone was happy to be a part of the experience. Meeting athletes from other sports is rare for us so we got to be very social and make memories inside and outside of our sports. There’s a strong sense of community that’s totally unique. Ski jumping has taken me all over the world. Some of the places where I compete do get me more excited than others. Going to Scandinavia is always exciting, but my favorite place is Japan. It’s different from what I’m used to; the culture is great, the food is delicious, and it’s just a nice change from my normal routine. In season when I’m not competing, I’m usually at our European base in Slovenia. Ski jumping takes up most of my time but when I get the chance I love to explore. When I’m back in America I’m just trying to spend as much time with family and friends as possible. I also really enjoy downhill skiing so any chance I get I’m out on the slopes. TAKING FLIGHT IN PYEONGCHANG Training is how you would imagine. It’s my full-time job so it takes up most of my day. I wake up at 7, go to the jumps for several hours, head home for lunch, rest for an hour or so, then head off to the gym. After training all day we might have some free time, or we might have some ski-jumping-related errands to run. We are always working on things like equipment to make sure our jumping stays at a high level. Diet is important. Because weight is such a huge factor in our sport, it’s important to stay thin and as light as possible. As a result, we must watch how much food we eat. It’s a delicate balance of feeling strong and energized versus keeping weight off. After Beijing there’s still a full month of competition. I have not yet decided what lies beyond this season for me. There are so many things I want to do and some tough decisions to make. When the season ends, I’ll head back home to Park City, rest for a couple weeks, reflect on the season and decide what’s next. Publisher’s Note: Kevin Bickner qualified in first place in the January U.S. Olympic Trials and was one of three Norge athletes competing at the Beijing games last month, along with Casey Larson (Barrington) and Patrick Gasienica (Chicago). Ski jumping had yet to be held when this issue went to press. To see how they did, go to USANordic.org.
