Heads up local connoisseurs of any type. This month’s issue is about the love of making, collecting & experiencing the better things in life. Do you have a special talent for jewelry making, pottery, painting, baking, woodworking or something else? Maybe this month you take the leap and start your own business. Or maybe you already have a side gig in the works. We’d love to see what it is you do. Tag us in your posts so we can support you and share more about the incredible makers in our community. When it comes to making memories, the love of the mountains inspired writer Kendall Houlton who shares with us insights on her family's winter vacation to lovely Aspen/Snowmass in Colorado. Local music maker Pat McKillen spent part of last year creating songs that are uniquely his own. One of his newest songs, “Nowhere Illinois,” reveals his appreciation for hometown life in SW Lake County; Pat grew up in Tower Lakes. We hope you enjoy this story by new writer Kendall Sharp (who grew up in Hawthorn Woods). Art in a frosty glass may be one way to describe the variety of beers crafted in Lake Zurich at Phase Three Brewing. Owen Morris and the husband-and-wife team of Shaun and Brittany Berns concoct delicious tastes to be enjoyed in their remodeled taproom or in your own home. Since 1972 the artisans at Volle’s Bridal Boutique have dressed thousands of local brides. Wait until you see the high fashion route they are taking now under the ownership of Susanne and Chad Dershaw of North Barrington. Guys, including the publisher of this humble magazine, aren’t left out because their companion business—Mr. Tux—offers smart fashions for grooms, too. As you flip through the pages of this month’s SW Lake we hope you are inspired by our stories and perhaps find some more local businesses worthy of your support.

Dunn Museum’s Ansel Adams Exhibition in Full Swing Ansel Adams, often called the father of landscape photography, didn’t start by taking photos of the magnificent El Capitan in California’s Yosemite National Park. An exhibit of his work currently at the Bess Bower Dunn Museum, 1899 W. Winchester Road, Libertyville, examines his early days capturing images of an unspoiled Western landscape. Adams was a poet of light, both in the field and darkroom. See his photography soon before the exhibit closes March 27.

“This is a passion project for everyone involved. We take our quality and beer seriously and strive to constantly improve. We can’t express how thankful we are to be in an industry like this and have the tremendous support of our fans.” — Brittany, Evan, and Shaun In Phase One, Shaun and Brittany Berns and Evan Morris worked with each other at a Schaumburg restaurant. Shaun is the guy who made a name for himself by making some pretty exciting beers. Brittany’s graphic design skills meant a whole series of one-off beer labels were made for Shaun’s creations. Evan’s background in hospitality management meant beer releases were big deals, and the trio started gaining traction. For Phase Two Shaun moved on to a brewery in Villa Park to build up a roster of beers with Brittany continuing to do label design. As things progressed, Shaun came aboard as general manager. After three years, it was time to see if they could do it on their own. For Phase Three the team started using space where they are now from the previous owners, LZ Brewing (the second owner after taking over from the old Blackbelt Brewing). In a span of nine short months, Shaun, Brittany and Evan assembled a whole team helping brew, package and distribute their beer. Phase Three Brewing Co. was officially licensed in 2021, and has experienced rapid growth. Sampling is available in a remodeled and comfy taproom. Their beer is served in bars and restaurants in Illinois and Wisconsin; it’s also sold by a number of retailers, including Binny’s and Garfields. The owners admit that at times “the ride has been scary and stressful, and extremely fun and satisfying.” Phase Three Brewing is at 932 Donata Court. The taproom is open seven days a week; visit PhaseThreeBrewing.com for specific hours. FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / S W L A KE

I Said “Yes” to the Dress AFTER 50 YEARS, VOLLE’S IS THE ONLY FULL-SERVICE SALON IN CHICAGOLAND SERVING BRIDES, GROOMS AND WEDDING PARTIES.
ARTICLE BY CHRISTINA SIKORSKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY LACOUR IMAGES AND GEORGE STRAVOLEMOS
When I was ready to say “yes” to the dress, there was just one choice. My mom and I had visited several shops in the city and suburbs, but only one visit brought us to happy tears. When I found “the dress,” I became part of a 50-year history of Lake Zurich’s Volle’s Bridal & Boutique and Mr. Tux helping brides, grooms, and their families look their best on the big day. Chad and Susanne Dershaw took over Volle’s in 2018 after careers in consulting and advertising, respectively. Friends since they were 10 years old, they migrated to Chicago separately from East Coast jobs; their friendship grew to love, and eventually marriage. “Chad has always had an entrepreneurial spirit, and I have always enjoyed a new adventure,” Susanne says. “Once we knew that Volle’s and Mr. Tux were available, we jumped at the opportunity. It fit us perfectly: we were celebrating our new marriage and were so excited to help newly engaged couples celebrate as well.” CONTINUED >

“[Newly engaged couples should] shop early. Start looking for your wedding dress nine to 12 months before your wedding date for your own benefit. We love making our customers feel happy and appreciated. Making all our customers happy is part of our DNA.” — Susanne Dershaw
At Volle’s, a bridal appointment is 90 minutes of fun. The staff gets to know brides through calls and emails before meeting in person. As the only full-service bridal salon in Chicagoland, Volle’s can dress and prepare the whole party: from wedding dresses to evening gowns, to mother-of-the-bride/groom dresses and bridesmaids’ dresses down to flower girls. Alterations are done on-site by seamstresses with a combined 100 years of experience. Volle’s brides are excited to feel and look their best but are also smart spenders, choosing from an enormous selection of dresses beginning at $1,500. For the full atelier experience (the private workshop of a professional artist), brides can work directly with wedding dress designer Victoria Sdoukos who’s been in business for 20 years. “Victoria will help design your dress from scratch and walk you through the whole process, so you have a one-of-a-kind wedding dress,” Susanne says. For men, Mr. Tux rents tuxedos and suits and offers bespoke tuxedos and suits for purchase. Since taking over, the Dershaws utilize more technology during styling sessions to provide instant answers. The focus is always on customer service for anyone seeking an approachable luxury wedding dress shopping experience.

Over the years, Volle’s has dressed many brides including WGN meteorologist Morgan Kolkmeyer. Proud supporters of the Brides Across America Organization, each year Volle’s gives away wedding dresses to brides who are in the military or are first responders (or are marrying active military or first responders). Volle’s is currently working with a bride who just moved to Belgium. “We’re so excited for her and have made arrangements for her alterations to be done while she’s in town,” Susanne says. The Dershaws recently won the Newcomer of the Year Award from the Lake Zurich Chamber of Commerce and have survived and thrived despite the pandemic. “We are grateful for our dedicated staff and our customers,” Susanne says. They plan to expand the business, adding to the current building to continue exceptional customer service. What is the message to new brides-to-be? “Come to Volle’s and let us take care of you,” Susanne says. “Not all stores know how to do this. Shop early. Start looking for your wedding dress nine to 12 months before your wedding. Chad and I love making our customers feel happy and appreciated. Making all our customers happy is part of our DNA.” Volle’s is at 53 S. Old Rand Road in Lake Zurich. Learn more at VollesBridal.com.

Tower Lakes Native Pat McKillen Is Pushing the Boundaries of Being a Local Singer/Songwriter.
22
B ACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE
ARTICLE BY KENDALL SHARP PHOTOGRAPHY BY NORA LOGUE
The past two years have been challenging for the music industry. Tower Lakes native Pat McKillen, a singer-songwriter, turned to virtual performances during the pandemic. “Pat Plays” was an online series featuring covers of bands McKillen says embody a communal spirit, such as Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay and Fleetwood Mac. McKillen’s favorite local venue, SPACE in Evanston, “...was impacted [by the pandemic] just like the rest of the industry, but they’re always thinking on their feet,” he said. “I worked with [SPACE] a lot to bring small and private concerts to people’s front yards during the pandemic. They’ve always provided a great space for artists, making the best of what we’re dealt,” he says. For a rising star in the music game, it’s all about playing for the right people, not the most people. McKillen’s favorite performances are in front of crowds with 25 to 100 people tops — an audience that can truly connect with the lyrics and emotion of his original songs. “I’m never, from a songwriter standpoint, going to be your dance artist,” McKillen says, laughing. “My songs are about unpacking questions that I have in my head, and I hope that people can relate to the songs, relate to the questions.” Of all venues McKillen has played, RockWood Music Hall in New York City is the place he loves most. Home to three stages, hosting several artists on a given night, the smallest stage is set in the basement and has a maximum capacity of 55 patrons. “The energy when I play in that room is always amazing,” McKillen says. “That’s something I want on a nightly basis… that would be making it for me.” McKillen has noticed a shift in the way people consume music. Six weeks into global lockdown, Spotify streams of the world’s top hits were down by 11%. Streaming drops of this magnitude are typically seen the week after Christmas. The “new normal” made it seemingly impossible to generate listeners’ interest, especially since bars that would typically play recorded music had shut down. CONTINUED >

“My songs are about unpacking questions that I have in my head, and I hope that people can relate to the songs, relate to the questions.”
Perhaps influenced by the pandemic, the video-streaming app TikTok became the hub for millions of short clips backed by music. Several entertainers have earned their claimto-fame through TikTok, but the follower count doesn’t always equate to authentic connections. Most emerging artists find social media efforts troubling. McKillen says, “[Social media] has always just felt superficial to me. The only things that really stick are legitimately genuine. Social media drives expectations of what format [of music] someone will stick with,” McKillen says. “First people would listen to full albums, then it was singles, and now it’s asking can we get them to listen to 15-second clips.” Eventually, he wants to tour and explore different cities. Chicago is homebase but McKillen still visits the suburbs once a week to clear his head: “I’ll always have a home here,” he says. Prior to the pandemic, McKillen took any opportunity to perform and play music.
24
B ACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE
He spent seven years in a wedding band, Gold Coast Allstars, and played three events every weekend, with solo gigs during the week. When the pandemic hit in 2020 and shut down all live music, the primary source of income for the majority of working musicians dried up. Many performing artists around Chicago often play in wedding/event bands to make a living, just as emerging musicians based in places like Nashville often play in bars for the income and exposure. “It’s not for lack of talent … [Chicago] hasn’t found that cultural shift to make [music] a part of our ecosystem,” McKillen says. “Whereas in New York, people will stroll in for a show and a drink. [Live music] is a big part of their nightlife and culture — I love that feeling.” Following a year in which he released 15 songs, in 2021 McKillen felt he needed a change. This time, he collaborated with Gold Coast Allstars member and Fort Knox
Studios owner Dan Mahoney to produce a three-track EP titled “Nowhere, Illinois.” “I took myself out of the comfort zone of literally my bedroom, where I’ve recorded everything else,” McKillen says. “I love having my hands all up in that pot to experiment. I know the sounds I want in my head, and I don’t always know how to make them, but eventually I’ll find them.” On the standout title track “Nowhere, Illinois,” McKillen paints a nostalgic picture, searching for anything comfortable in a world that has been anything but normal. The song explores relatable experiences of growing up in the suburbs and wanting to make it outside of your hometown. “Sometimes, the thing you thought you wanted to get away from the most is where you needed to [go] back to,” he says. Rocky Mountain Love MAKING MEMORIES WITH A WINTER FAMILY VACATION IN COLORADO’S ASPEN/SNOWMASS.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KENDALL HOULTON
Traveling overseas was not feasible last year so my family opted for a ski vacation in Aspen, Colorado as an ideal way to spend a winter holiday. As home to the world’s first world ski championships held outside of Europe, Aspen is renowned for its incredibly dreamy winter experiences and celebrity sightings. This year is even more special because Aspen/Snowmass is celebrating 75 years of skiing, offering guests four world-class mountains to choose from: Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk. These mountains offer a wide variety of terrain perfect for everyone from beginner to expert and lots of celebratory events.

Aspen night
Aspen is in the Roaring Fork Valley, southwest of Vail, with airport proximity that few mountain resorts enjoy. Located just 5 minutes from Buttermilk (and 10 minutes from Snowmass and Aspen Mountain), the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport accommodates flights from major U.S. airports on United, Delta, and American Airlines. As a group of ten, we opted to stay in an Airbnb just outside of Carbondale between Glenwood Springs and Aspen. We chose this location as home base because within 35 minutes we were either on the slopes at Aspen Snowmass or Sunlight Ski Resort, outside Glenwood Springs. With nearly 730 skiable acres and a 2,000-foot vertical drop, Sunlight offers big skiing at an affordable price. And you can enjoy some of the best après-ski fun
at the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool, Glenwood Hot Springs Resort. Because of our large group, we rented a Cadillac Escalade but some of us found that riding the local Roaring Fork Transit buses was very convenient when we wanted to get on the slopes earlier than the rest of our group. These buses run the entirety of the Roaring Fork Valley and can get you around easily; many (but not all) routes are free, including all City of Aspen routes and all Aspen to/from Snowmass Village routes. Seniors 65 and older and children 5 and under always ride free. The Village Shuttle within Snowmass Village is also free. RFTA’s real time bus information is available in an easy-to-use mobile app called Transit. CONTINUED >

When you’re looking for the perfect place to rest your head after a day on the slopes, look no further than Airbnb or VRBO for your accommodations — you’ll find an amazing selection of great places to stay in the Roaring Fork Valley, but an Airbnb called “Aspenwood” was our choice. Located on the banks of the Roaring Fork River, this 4-bedroom, 3½ bath home is 35 minutes to Aspen/Snowmass Ski Resort and Sunlight Ski Resort in Glenwood Springs. The beautiful river compound was like our own tiny resort without the crowds. With unsurpassed views of the Roaring Fork River, two fireplaces in the Great Room including radiant heating, a gourmet kitchen with amenities fit for a professional chef, and an 8-person Sundance Optima hot tub overlooking the river, we wished we could have stayed longer. The Roaring Fork Valley offers some of the most productive and consistent winter fly fishing anywhere in the Rockies. A guided winter fly fishing trip is the perfect way to experience the beauty of this area and is a great break from the slopes. Check out AspenFlyFishing.com for more details. For planning, you’ll want to check out how easy it is to drive to your accommodation because some rental homes are difficult to reach in wintertime if your rental car does not have 4-wheel drive. Luckily, our Airbnb was located down a regularly snow-plowed road and the rental property had “driveway snowmelt” making the home easily accessible during snowstorms. A bus stop was two minutes away, and we could simply stow skis on the bus ski racks, leaving the driving to someone else. And our Airbnb host offered to drive us if we didn’t feel like walking to the bus stop.

The ski season runs to mid-April, depending on the mountain. All four of Aspen’s mountains are open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, and one lift ticket gets you on all four mountains. Be sure to book seven days in advance to save between 13—45%. In addition to single-day and multi-day lift tickets, Aspen Snowmass offers a variety of season passes and participates in some of the industry’s best multi-destination ski passes including the Ikon Pass, Mountain Collective Pass, and Colorado Ski Country’s Gold Pass. If you need to rent skis or snowboards, Stapleton Ski Shop and Up Snowboard Rentals and Miller Sports are in the heart of Aspen. Or better yet, reserve your skis/snowboards with
Ski Butlers who deliver your equipment rentals directly to your accommodations. Luckily for us, we discovered Ragged Mountain Sports, an outdoor gear store located in Carbondale that offered a plethora of unused (and used) gear that residents donate from all over Aspen region. This was a great shop for friendly customer service vibes in the gear-head affluent ski world if you quickly need to grab a thermal base layer or a helmet. Kendall Houlton, an Idaho-based writer, says according to the Aspen Chamber Resort Association, Illinois is ranked fifth for the largest share of Aspen’s visitors over the last few years.

Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial disciplines, including comprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, KS, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm in America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions.

“Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.
