LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome to 2022

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Michael Beightol | michael.beightol@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Stephen Neilson | stephen.neilson@citylifestyle.com

It’s a new year, and that means a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it’s nice to reflect for a moment on where we’ve been, what we’ve learned from 2021, what we want to build upon, and where we want to go. The practice of establishing new goals or resolutions for the coming year helps to focus on what is truly a priority (or should be). Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier. Other goals may be more community focused, revolving around intentionality or finding ways to help people in need. Whatever your goals are this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. Only then can we move from simply thinking about doing those things to taking regular actions to create a new reality. Two of our regular contributors – Russ Riendeau and Kristen Todoroff (Be Well 360) share ideas on goals, manifestations and tips for starting the year off on the right foot. Kristen and Sean Lee (Restoration Fitness) also offer thoughts on how to make sure breakfast fuels us for a productive day. When it’s time to get outside and embrace winter, skiing and snowboarding are great healthy lifestyle activities. And no matter how you heat up your muscles our story about a cold plunge reveals a restorative practice that’s truly invigorating. One of our annual resolutions here at SW Lake is to be continually relevant to the community we serve. That’s why we are introducing a fresh new look on these pages. While a lot of forethought, planning and effort goes into every issue, we’re eager to hear your thoughts and suggestions about our new look. Our hope is that your 2022 is filled with personal wellness, improving health habits, and continuous improvement in all the goals most meaningful to you.

Journaling captures gratitude and helps set goals.

WINTER WELLNESS COMMIT TO LEADING A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE STARTING THIS MONTH.

14

G IV IN G BAC K | FITNESS

What three things would you like to start, stop or continue that will improve your wellness every day? Which aspects of your daily habits and living environment are you most grateful for? Winter is often experienced as a season of introspection: a time for renewal and reflection; a time for exploring our options and decisions in life. Our thoughts focus on the new year as the days get shorter and the air grows cold and clear. In our Covid world, it can mean challenges, including possibly being isolated again from friends and family. We need to dig deeper into our personal resilience to stay positive and healthy.

HE ALTHIER LIFEST YLE

Here enters the perfect opportunity to formulate your own wellness vision. As a Mayo Clinic trained Wellness Coach and Doctor of Psychology, I’m fortunate to have access to some of the best medical, psychological and health/wellness research in America through the Mayo Clinic. And also as a fellow business owner, I appreciate the many challenges to dedicating time, energy and commitment to our own wellness, as pandemic-generated and other daily surprises continually pop up. Here are some simple, pragmatic tips (and fun experiments) for helping you reset and restore your overall wellness for this upcoming winter season. All of these ideas have scientific evidence behind their effectiveness. Although they’re simple, be prepared: even simple changes require effort. Watch what happens when you commit to a few of these ideas even for 10 days! You’ll feel better, and these positive emotions will carry you to the next 10 days, and on to the next. With items in no particular order, here’s a list worth putting on the fridge or the coffee table for the next 30 days to jumpstart your momentum. • Write down 4 things you’re grateful for in the past week. • Drink 2 more glasses of cool water every day. This will reduce hunger and inflammation, and help overall digestion and concentration. • List 5 things you can do instead of heading to the fridge for a snack. Keep busy to keep from overeating. • Buy yourself a new pillow and give yourself a good night’s sleep. Your brain and body heal your cells as you sleep. • Head out into nature every day, even if just for 10 minutes. Stress is proven to drop when in nature. • Keep alcohol consumption to a minimum to help reduce weight and hunger pangs, as well as to avoid dehydration. • Start that book you’ve been wanting to read CONTINUED > or listen to.

Walking is perfect for mind and body. JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / S W L A KE

15

• If you want to lose a few pounds, do nothing else except eat 400 less calories a day and burn 200 more calories a day. Walking for 40 minutes can burn 300. Do this for one week and see what happens. • Change your furnace filter tomorrow and breathe some fresher air. • This weekend, start planning your next vacation. Where do you want to go? • Call that friend you have been putting off calling. • Jump into (and come out of) the closet with 10 pieces of clothing you don’t/won’t wear, and donate or toss them (Yes, that shirt must go!). • Start a countdown list of healthy achievements, and work toward them... for example: 10 pounds lost, 9 walks this week, 8 pushups, 7 flights of stairs, etc. Remember: Exercise is anything with movement. You can move more! • Limit watching the news to 1 hour a day... and fill that spare time by visiting your local library (my favorite: the great Barrington Area Library). Creating your own winter wellness vision and dedicating time to self-care is the best gift you can give yourself and your family: to remain fit, strong, and alert in our challenging world. Russ Riendeau, PhD, is one of only 1000 Mayo Clinic trained Wellness Coaches in the world. NEW YEAR’S M A N I F E S TAT I O N S

USING SMART GOALS TO MAKE 2022 A YEAR OF POSITIVE CHANGE ARTICLE BY KRISTEN TODOROFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN NEILSON

Most of us have set New Year’s resolutions at some point in our lives. As we turn the page on the calendar, it makes sense that we’d desire to make positive changes in a new year. Many people, however, set goals that are drastic, unrealistic and difficult to accomplish. What can follow are stress and self-judgement if the goals are not achieved. In this case, ‘resolutions’ tend to evoke negative connotations and create unnecessary pressure on ourselves. Instead, I like to make a list of “New Year’s Manifestations” – areas of self-improvement that I want to focus on, with measurable steps to accomplish, and realistic expectations to achieve. This is a more positive spin on resolutions, and a much more mindful approach to starting a new year on the right foot. With this kind of approach the motivation to accomplish goals starts with inspiration rather than desperation.

SET SMART GOALS SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely. They’ll help you in making a commitment while setting you up for success. When establishing SMART goals, ask yourself the following questions: • Is this goal Specific? Be as detailed as possible – the more specific you are, the more likely you are to reach the goal. • Is this goal Measurable? Establish criteria to measure progress. Create a checklist of steps and check off each item as it’s completed. • Is this goal Attainable? When you clearly identify your goal, you can embody the attitudes, abilities, and skills to reach it successfully. Make sure your goals align with your future vision and authentic self. • Is this goal Realistic? You must be committed, willing and able to work toward your goal. Be honest with yourself about your available time and energy and plan accordingly. Make sure your goal is challenging enough to inspire and motivate you. • Is this goal Timely? Set a deadline to anchor your goal and create a calendar leading up to this deadline including having all the steps you need to reach your goal mapped out. CONTINUED >

SETTING “SMART” GOALS A common goal many people have when entering a new year is to improve their physical health, especially if they indulged over the holidays. I am guilty of this, too, but starting a crash diet or extreme workout regimen may not be a sustainable solution and could add more self-imposed stress which can be counterproductive. For example, instead of focusing on exercising more as a way to lose weight (“I want to exercise more”), say instead, “I want to work out four times a week.” Think about all the positive, measurable goals you can set to lose weight. One could be to reduce sugar and processed foods; another could be to cook more meals at home; and a third could be to incorporate stress-management practices daily. Start a food diary to track your meals and make a plan to cut down on one or two types of food each week. Write down your workouts so you can monitor your progress and improvements from week-to-week. Chronic stress levels also contribute to weight gain. Try journaling or meditation to focus on things that you’re grateful for; practicing gratitude is a proven stress reducer. Maintaining healthy relationships is also very important to your overall physical and mental health. Take an honest look at your relationships with friends and family and see where there needs to be more boundaries established, or what relationships you want to strengthen even more. Create a vision board including words and images that represent how you’ll feel when you complete your weight loss goal. Having visual reminders will help motivate you to stick to your healthy habits and help manifest success. Other ways to help you achieve your goals are to schedule time on your calendar for workouts, find a support system (maybe it’s a workout buddy), and celebrate each successful milestone. Remember, no one is perfect; we all may face stumbling blocks along the way to our goals. It’s ok! Each day is a new opportunity to get back on track. Take some time to really think about what areas of your life you’d like to make improvements in this year. Maybe you’ve always wanted to take a drawing class, or learn to play the trumpet... or maybe there’s a dream vacation you’d like to save up for. Any goal that aligns with your dreams and desires can be more easily attained by outlining its accompanying SMART goal. Happy manifesting!

SNOW RIDING ADVENTURE GOING DOWNHILL, FAST: GET OUTSIDE TO ENJOY WINTER’S SLIPPERY SIDE.

Nothing promotes health and wellness quite like ripping a run down a steep ski hill on a sunny wintery day. Here’s a quick rundown of ski, snowboard and tubing options as close as the Illinois/Wisconsin state line and as exciting as a weekend getaway to Galena, Michigan or “Up North.”

1. mountain top at grand geneva Offering 21 runs, a six-acre terrain park, plus trails and experiences for all skill levels, Grand Geneva is a nearby snow sport destination (with spa and indoor waterpark, too). Season passes and lift tickets available for purchase on their website. (GrandGeneva.com; Lake Geneva, IL.)

2. chestnut mountain resort Illinois’ biggest ski getaway, Chestnut Mountain Resort, caters to snow sports enthusiasts with 19 ski slopes, a terrain park, and lots of lessons. There are three restaurants, a gift shop, and lodging overlooking the Mississippi River. (ChestnutMTN.com; Galena, IL.)

3. wilmot mountain ski & tube Wilmot Mountain is Lake County’s ski resort. (A love of snow sports knows no boundaries; Wilmot straddles the Illinois/Wisconsin border.) Wilmot’s welcoming atmosphere has created memories for countless guests spanning more than 80 years. (WilmotMountain.com; Wilmot, WI.) CONTINUED >

Breakfast Recipes from Two Local Wellness Experts ARTICLE BY SEAN LEE & KRISTEN TODOROFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN NEILSON

It’s been said breakfast is the most important meal of the day. To find out why we asked two local experts to share their thoughts and recommend options. “Breakfast means breaking the fast,” says Sean Lee, owner of Restoration Fitness in Lake Zurich. “At some point in our day, all of us do that, whether it’s at 7 a.m. or noon. A balanced breakfast can provide an abundance of nutrients. As with all meals, you should pair high-fiber carbs with protein and fat. This macronutrient trio will boost your energy, stabilize blood sugar, and help prevent cravings and overeating later in the day.”

In a similar vein, Kristen Todoroff, a wellness coach and owner of Be Well 360 (Wauconda), says: “Starting your day with a healthy breakfast can fuel your body and help manage the number of calories consumed throughout the day. However, sugary cereals, carb-heavy breads and pastries, and packaged fruit juices can be counter-productive. Their high-sugar content causes blood sugar levels to spike (and later crash). Choose whole grains, whole fruits, healthy fats and protein to limit sugar first thing in the morning.” CONTINUED >

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition

The Cold Plunge

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

Ansel Adams (1902–1984) was a giant in the field of landscape photography. His images of the unspoiled Western landscape were informed by his belief in the transcendental concept of the sublime—a complex combination of overwhelming awe and fear. Adams was a poet of light, both in the field and in the darkroom. Many viewers are familiar with Adams’ heroic, high-contrast prints from the 1970s. Ansel Adams: Early Works focuses on the artist’s masterful, less well-known small prints from the 1920s through 1950s. By capturing the power of nature, Adams changed our understanding of landscape photography, solidifying it as a legitimate form of modern art. Sponsored by This exhibition is organized by art2art Circulating Exhibitions, LLC. All works are from the private collection of Michael Mattis and Judith Hochberg.
