The holidays are also a time for reflection. In that spirit we are pleased to present Christina Sikorski’s story about the remarkable Steen Metz, a Barrington resident who as a child survived a Nazi prison camp. Now Mr. Metz is on a mission to share his story so that we never forget the holocaust. The holidays bring people together. Marty Jalove (Master Happiness, LLC) talked to three local business owners to delve into the topic of teamwork. The lesson here is that success follows when we work together in common cause. Citizens for Conservation, a local not-for-profit dedicated to acquiring and maintaining open spaces across three counties, recently added to its already impressive land holdings by acquiring a large portion of the Duchossois Family horse farm in Barrington Hills. We applaud the efforts of the volunteer-led CFC to save open spaces for future generations. While this month can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. Our hope for you this month is that you find peace surrounded by family and friends and that we all remember to take care of each other by extending grace, empathy and love.

Night Hiking Trails Open in the Lake County Forest Preserves
Fireside Chat Was Raw and Real for Women Business Leaders
Two trails in Lake County are now open for night hiking in the Old School Forest Preserve (Libertyville) and at Lakewood Forest Preserve (Wauconda). Solar lights serve as a guide along the trails. It is recommended hikers bring a flashlight or headlamp for additional illumination. Trails are open until 9 p.m. through March 12. Bicycles and horses are not permitted; dogs are okay but must be leashed.

Hyenas are scavengers. Their motivation is strictly survival. They will hunt if necessary but are happy with someone else’s leftovers. Horses are motivated by a carrot dangling in front of them or a stinging stick behind them. Similarly, reward and punishment is a motivational strategy still used today by many unenlightened employers. Survival is our most basic motivation. When I look back at the jobs that my father held, they were all about doing whatever needed to be done to get a paycheck. When I entered the workforce, the idea of a promotion or more pay was juxtaposed with the potential threat of termination. But the times are different now. There are many more jobs, occupations, and careers from which we can chose. We are human and demand more than just a paycheck. We want to find purpose in our work. We want to feel that our existence and contributions have meaning. Smart employers know this and offer opportunities for growth; they listen, and they help their team find internal motivation through a sense of purpose. Joe Janicki, Brightway Insurance in Lake Zurich, is an enthusiastic leader who strives to help his team do their absolute best. He goes out of his way to find like-minded individuals to work with. Steen Metz has frequently shared his story at area schools and beyond
Survivor’s Story Enduring the Holocaust Drives Barrington Resident to Write a Book So That Others Never Forget ARTICLE BY CHRISTINA SIKORSKI
Barrington resident Steen Metz was eight years old when Nazi soldiers knocked on his door to arrest his family, giving less than an hour to gather their things. It was October 2, 1943. Over the next 72 hours, he was on a train in a cattle car without food, light or toilets en route to a work camp 40 miles north of Prague, in what is now the Czech Republic. It was 18 brutal months in captivity before freedom came. Metz was born and raised in Odense, Denmark, famous as the birthplace of Hans Christian Anderson.

He was a happy child, biking to and from school and playing with friends. There was no happiness at the Nazi camp. Families were grouped by gender and age: men (16+), women, children, and seniors. Metz was fortunate that he was able to still bunk with his mother rather than in the children’s barracks: “I will never understand how somehow, she convinced them. Most children were separated.” He believes that staying together was key to their survival.

Metz suffered many losses during the early days of camp, including the death of his father, who was physically abused and starved. He died at the age of 40, just six months after entering the camp. Stripped of his overcoat and proper winter clothes and forced to do heavy manual labor, at the time of his death Metz’s father had lost roughly half of his body weight. There was very little food in camp. Metz often went to bed hungry. Half a loaf of bread had to last a week. “Potato soup,” potato skins boiled in water, was a typical midday meal. After six months, families began to receive mail, often packages with vitamins, clothing, and food. He recounted a day when his mother opened a box that seemed oddly heavy. Rather than desperately-needed bread and blankets, the box was filled with bricks; the Nazis had stolen its original contents. As Metz retells this story, he speaks slowly and deliberately: “It is hard to imagine how one human being can treat another human being that way.” While there was no formal schooling, he had some private lessons. Metz would also play modified soccer with other children his age on a gravel pitch, sending a ball of tied-up clothes to an imaginary goal. One day his friends never arrived to play. When he asked his mother what happened, she protected him from the truth. Metz’s mother worked 10-12 hour days. As a young widow, she was determined to care for her child in days filled with uncertainty: if they would have enough to eat; if they could get proper medical treatment if one or both of them became ill; and most worrisome, if they would be transported to a death camp. After a grueling 18 months, Metz talks of the miracle of April 15, 1945,

when they were liberated. The Red Cross had successfully negotiated to move the camp inhabitants safely to a neutral Sweden. When the war ended, Metz returned with his mother to Denmark. When he finished school he wanted to see more of the world. It was in the United Kingdom where he met a woman, Eileen; they later married, immigrated to the states to settle, and raised a family in the Chicago suburbs. He worked in corporate America, retiring in 1999. During retirement, he started writing a book for his family on his life’s journey. The chapters about his life during WWII would eventually become a standalone book, A Danish Boy in Theresienstadt: Reflections of a Holocaust Survivor.

His family encouraged him to speak out and share his story with groups about being a Holocaust survivor. His first official speaking engagement was at his oldest grandson’s elementary class. Metz began nervously, only to be happily surprised when he finished. “They [the students] were amazing, very quiet, and asked great questions. One came up to my grandson afterward and said, ‘Your grandpa was awesome.’” Since then he has dedicated himself to a second career: educating others about his Holocaust experience. He ultimately returned to the work camp in 2009 as a free person to conduct more research for the book. His goal is to keep the story of the Holocaust alive, especially with fewer remaining survivors. Indeed, today’s students are the last generation to have the opportunity to listen to first-hand accounts from Holocaust survivors. Metz says, “I want to contribute toward peace and education. There is too much hate in the world.” At the end of each speaking engagement, he asks his listeners to spread the message and talk to at least four additional people about the Holocaust. Metz achieved his goal of reaching 100,000 people through his speaking engagements in the summer of 2022. Though his family encourages him to slow down, he continues. “I know from research that more and more people forget or do not realize what happened,” he says. “I think that such a terrible time, the worst case in human history, can never be forgotten. I am especially concerned about the increase in anti-Semitism and deniers.” After speaking to an audience at The Garlands of Barrington, attendees remarked that it is humbling to see how kind, generous, and even humorous Metz can be, given everything he endured as

a young child. Friends and neighbors who know him spoke up during a question-and-answer period to say how fortunate they are to know him and his family, and that his work now is so important. At The Garlands Metz even found time to interject levity, including being so happy to have chocolate when he arrived in Sweden after missing his favorite foods for more than a year. What can we learn from the Holocaust? Metz says, “Not to lose hope. Mother was very tenacious and resilient. She said, ‘I couldn’t afford to give up hope with my boy.’ I inherited that, and to treat other people the way you want to be treated: {just} the exact opposite of how Hitler treated the Jews and millions of others.” Learn more at SteenMetzNeverForget.com.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

Newest Acquisition by Citizens for Conservation Adds Largest Parcel of Saved Open Space HILL ‘N DALE PRESERVE WILL PROTECT AND RESTORE CRITICAL PROPERTY IN THE SPRING CREEK WATERSHED. ARTICLE BY MICHAEL BEIGHTOL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF CHEMELEWSKI AND BOB LEE Citizens for Conservation (CFC) and The Duchossois Group teamed together to provide long-term conservation protection for the 246.5-acre Hill ‘N Dale Farm South property in Barrington Hills—bounded by Spring Creek Road (north), Ridge Road (east), Lake-Cook/County Line Road (south), and residents along Meadow Hill Road (west). Spring Creek watershed corridor is one of the most desirable conservation-worthy properties in Northern Illinois. The purchase increases CFC’s owned-and-protected land to 777 acres in Lake/Cook/McHenry counties and is its 14th (and largest) preserve. Hill ‘N Dale Preserve encompasses 4,060 linear feet of high-quality Spring Creek, a Fox River tributary. It honors the current name of the Duchossois property, reflecting the protection of the surrounding upland bluffs (Hill) and Spring Creek valley (Dale). The purchase permanently protects the land as open space, and improves and protects a sensitive watershed highly significant to area aquifer recharge. It's also a critical wildlife corridor connected to the 4,000-acre Spring Creek Forest Preserve.
Restoring the natural ecosystem will provide important habitat for native plant and aquatic communities, grassland birds (such as Bobolink, Bittern, and Henslow’s sparrows), and wildlife that originally occupied this land, including endangered species such as monarch butterflies and rustypatched bumblebees. “This property’s high conservation value, coupled with CFC’s strong history of delivering quality restoration results, will have far-reaching impacts for the entire Barrington-area community, and the entire Northern Illinois region,” said Kathleen Leitner, CFC’s Board President. Kim Duchossois said, “My family and I could not be more thrilled to have worked so closely with CFC over the past year to facilitate their purchase of the south part of Hill ‘N Dale Farm. We know how important this land is… and it was absolutely critical for our entire family to make certain the property would be protected and maintained as open space.” Citizens for Conservation (CFC) is a volunteer-based organization with a 50-year history in the Barrington area.
