How does brain science fit into the career picture? It’s helpful to use the analogy of a tree. The primary cells of the brain, neurons, are constantly sending signals—how we think, talk, and move—like a tree’s branches. Self explains that as we experience new things, the connections between these neurons are constantly changing. As we age, older AUGUST: IT’S WHEN FAMILIES ANTICIPATE THE RETURN

gist. With a nod to the Beatles, the class was called “When I’m 64.” Based on U.S. Census Bureau data, life expectancy today is about 10 years longer than in 1960. Many people now live well into their 80s; WU wanted to explore the consequences of aging, including lifestyle changes, later retirements and community design. What do these demographic changes mean for young people today? With longer life expectancies, today’s youth need to plan for perhaps 50 years of work during their lifetime, as well as understand that “work” may mean something entirely different down the road than it does today. “We often get tempted to think about instant gratification,” Self says. “People need to change that point of view and think of career in terms of a longer arc, especially as our society changes and advances.”

So what does all this mean for today’s high school students? Carl Krause is a professional school counselor at Lake Zurich High School. Krause advocates for and supports students in becoming strong, capable young adults. “Be super pointy instead of well-rounded,” he says. “Do what you love and embrace who you are. Don’t do things you dislike because you think a college may want you to have it [on your resume].” Krause says, “Most kids don’t have the entire pie of options to choose from. With almost 50% of students starting college ‘undecided’, that’s not abnormal. For students more on the career path: do they mind getting dirty? Do they want to work with people, or
